Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is an important, substantial global oil crop with robust resilience to drought and salt stresses. The TGA (TGACG motif-binding factor) transcription factors, belonging to the basic region leucine zipper (bZIP) family, have been implicated in orchestrating multiple biological processes. Despite their functional significance, a comprehensive investigation of the TGA family's abiotic stress tolerance in sunflowers remains elusive. In the present study, we identified 14 TGA proteins in the sunflower genome, which were unequally distributed across 17 chromosomes. Employing phylogenetic analysis encompassing 149 TGA members among 13 distinct species, we revealed the evolutionary conservation of TGA proteins across the plant kingdom. Collinearity analysis suggested that both HaTGA01 and HaTGA03 were generated due to HaTGA08 gene duplication. Notably, qRT-PCR analysis demonstrated that HaTGA04, HaTGA05, and HaTGA14 genes were remarkably upregulated under ABA, MeJA, and salt treatments, whereas HaTGA03, HaTGA06, and HaTGA07 were significantly repressed. This study contributes valuable perspectives on the potential roles of the HaTGA gene family under various stress conditions in sunflowers, thereby enhancing our understanding of TGA gene family dynamics and function within this agriculturally significant species.

In the context of the rapid growth of corporate green investment and the rapid dissemination of information brought about by Internet technology, it is important to explore the relationship between investor attention and corporate environmental responsibility. Unfortunately, an in-depth research on the relationship between investor attention and firms' environment, society, and governance (ESG) performance remains unexplored. The results show a mutual inhibition between investor attention and firms' ESG performance. Each 1% increase in investor attention decreases ESG performance by 0.252%, while each 1% increase in ESG performance decreases investor attention by 2.296%. Thus, ESG performance dominates this mutual influence. Moreover, ESG performance positively affects ESG performance and investor attention of neighboring firms. Each 1% increase in ESG performance increases ESG performance and investor attention of neighboring firms by 0.371% and 0.983%, respectively. Investor attention negatively affects investor attention and ESG performance of neighboring firms. Each 1% increase in investor attention decreases ESG performance and investor attention of neighboring firms by 0.04% and 0.104%, respectively. Further research reveals significant regional and organizational heterogeneity in the relationship between investor attention and ESG performance. The findings provide theoretical and empirical insights for further improvement of the ESG system and continued strengthening of investor guidance by regulators.

Persistent green innovation helps enterprises save energy, reduce pollution, and continue to gain economic benefits. However, existing studies explored the economic and organizational factors influencing firms' persistent green innovation while neglecting peer influence in the digital economy. This study examines the impact of digital economy and peer influence on persistent green innovation using data of Chinese-listed companies from 2011 to 2019. The results show that digital economy and peer influence positively affect persistent green innovation. Moreover, digital economy plays a competitive mediating role between peer influence and persistent green innovation. The results of further research show that both the time lag term of peer influence and spatial lag term of digital economy affect persistent green innovation. This study incorporates the three-level elements of enterprise, peer, and city into a unified framework, providing theoretical reference and practical guidance for green innovation to enhance the competitive advantage of enterprises.

Hydraulic structures are typically subjected to long-term hydraulic loading, and concrete-the main material of structures-may suffer from cracking damage and seepage failure, which can threaten the safety of hydraulic structures. In order to assess the safety of hydraulic concrete structures and realize the accurate analysis of the whole failure process of hydraulic concrete structures under the coupling effect of seepage and stress, it is vital to comprehend the variation law of concrete permeability coefficients under complex stress states. In this paper, several concrete samples were prepared, designed for loading conditions of confining pressures and seepage pressures in the first stage, and axial pressures in the later stage, to carry out the permeability experiment of concrete materials under multi-axial loading, followed by the relationships between the permeability coefficients and axial strain, and the confining and seepage pressures were revealed accordingly. In addition, during the application of axial pressure, the whole process of seepage-stress coupling was divided into four stages, describing the permeability variation law of each stage and analyzing the causes of its formation. The exponential relationship between the permeability coefficient and volume strain was established, which can serve as a scientific basis for the determination of permeability coefficients in the analysis of the whole failure process of concrete seepage-stress coupling. Finally, this relationship formula was applied to numerical simulation to verify the applicability of the above experimental results in the numerical simulation analysis of concrete seepage-stress coupling.

Despite growing attention to Internet activity as a social determinant of depression in adolescents, few studies have focused on its diverse effects on depressive symptoms. Using data from the 2020 China Family Panel Study, this study employed logistic regression analysis to examine how Internet activity affects depressive symptoms in adolescents in China. The results indicated that adolescents with longer online duration using mobile phones tended to have higher levels of depression. Adolescents who engaged in online activities related to games, shopping, and entertainment had more severe depressive symptoms, but their time spent on online learning was not significantly associated with their level of depression. These findings suggest a dynamic link between Internet activity and adolescent depression and offer policy implications for addressing depressive symptoms in adolescents. Specifically, Internet and youth development policies and public health programs during the COVID-19 pandemic should be designed based on a comprehensive account of all aspects of Internet activity.

The commercialization of academic patents is a basic means for universities to promote economic growth and upgrade the industrial innovation of enterprises. However, among developing countries, the commercialization rate of university patents is generally low. This study utilizes data from 65 universities which are directly under the Ministry of Education of China to analyze the influencing factors and mechanisms of academic patent commercialization. The findings show that the proportion of associate professors, the size of service staff transforming research and development achievement, and the proportion of basic research funding in universities are positively correlated with the commercialization rate of university patents. In addition, these factors indirectly affect the commercialization of university patents by affecting neighboring universities; that is, there are spatial spillover effects in the commercialization of university patents between neighboring universities. These empirical results indicate that universities can promote the commercialization of university patents by optimizing the structure of faculty, developing the R&D achievement transformation service staff team, and strengthening investment in basic research.

Depression in adolescents is a major public health disorder. The relationship between physical activity and risk of depression in adolescents was examined using three waves of data from the China Family Panel Studies in 2020. The risk of depression was significantly higher among adolescents who reported lower frequency and shorter duration of physical exercise than those who reported physical exercise more frequently and for a longer duration. The risk of depression was significantly higher among adolescents who reported intense physical exercise than those who reported little or no intense physical exercise. The amount of time spent on housework by adolescents is inversely associated with depression. These results provide somewhat stronger evidence for an activity−depression link than previous studies and suggest a differential role for different types of physical activity, such as exercise and housework. The overall model predicting depression in adolescents (LR chi-squared = 95.974, p < 0.001, Nagelkerke R-square = 0.183) was statistically significant. To effectively control depression in adolescents, the government, schools and parents need to act together to guide adolescents towards participation in appropriate physical activities. The appropriate level of physical activity is for adolescents to experience breathing, rapid heartbeat, and slight perspiration.

Despite growing attention to job satisfaction as a social determinant of alcohol-related behaviors, few studies focus on its diverse impacts on alcohol consumption. Using data from the China Family Panel Study in 2018, this study uses logistic regression analysis to examine how job satisfaction affects alcohol consumption in China, finding that people who were satisfied with their jobs were more likely to be regularly drinking. Employed people who were satisfied with their working environment and working hours were more likely to regularly drink, but those who were satisfied with their wages and working security were less likely to be regularly drinking. Findings suggest that the link between job satisfaction and alcohol consumption is dynamic. Employment policies, working wellbeing improvement programs, and alcohol policy improvement should, therefore, be designed on the basis of a comprehensive account of entire job-related attitudes.

Despite growing attention to living conditions as a social determinant of health, few studies have focused on its diverse impacts on self-rated health. Using data from the China Family Panel Study in 2018, this study used logistic regression analysis to examine how living conditions affect self-rated health in China, finding that people cooking with sanitary water and clean fuel were more likely to report good health, and that homeownership was associated with higher self-rated health. The self-rated health of people living in high-quality housing was lower than that of people living in ordinary housing, and people living in tidy homes were more likely to report good health. The findings suggest that the link between multiple living conditions and self-rated health is dynamic. Public health policies and housing subsidy programs should therefore be designed based on a comprehensive account of not only housing grade or income status, but also whole dwelling conditions.

The spatiotemporal context affects corporate behavior because any corporate activity is carried out in a specific time and space. Based on an examination on the research and development (R&D) expenditures of 284 listed biopharmaceutical companies in China, this study finds that the innovation space of the biopharmaceutical industry presents a spatial "North-South" pattern. The spatial gravity center of the biopharmaceutical industry's R&D investment has been shifting to the eastern coastal region. This spatiotemporal context will impact the R&D investment of biopharmaceutical companies. Research shows that the distance between biopharmaceutical companies and the gravity center has a direct impact on the R&D expenditures of biopharmaceutical companies. This study supports the context-sensitive thesis and shows how the spatiotemporal context affects the R&D investment of biopharmaceutical companies while controlling firm-level factors.

The purpose of this study was to examine the daily social pressure and socioeconomic factors related to women's alcohol consumption in China. Cross-sectional data were obtained from the 2012 China Family Panel Studies. A multivariate logistic regression analysis of a sample of 16 339 female adults with the mean age of 45.3 years was used to examine the relationships between dependent and independent variables. According to the results, first, the greater the daily social pressure, the more likely women were to engage in general alcohol consumption (odds ratio = 1.061) and risk drinking (odds ratio = 1.057). Second, while there is a positive relationship between the general level of social pressure and women's alcohol consumption, the relationship between the severe level of social pressure and women's alcohol consumption was not significant. Finally, women in the Central region were less likely to engage in risk drinking than women in the Western region; women with secondary school education were more likely to engage in risk drinking than women with primary school education or below; and age was significantly positively associated with both general and risk drinking. In conclusion, increasing alcohol consumption among women may be due to increased social pressure.

Bike sharing, as an innovative travel mode featured by mobile internet and sharing, offers a new transport mode for short trips and has a huge positive impact on urban transportation and environmental protection. However, bike-sharing operators face some operational challenges, especially in sustainable development and profitability. Studies show that the customers' willingness to pay is a key factor affecting bike-sharing companies' operating conditions. Based on the theories of perceived value, this study conducts an empirical analysis of factors that affect bike-sharing users' willingness to pay for bike-sharing through measurement scales, user surveys, and structural equation models. We designed a five-point Likert-type scale containing 11 latent variables affecting willingness to pay and a total of 34 measurement items. We investigate bike-sharing users in China's first and second-tier cities, with a total of 502 participants. The results show that perceived value, payment awareness, trust, and environmental awareness constitute key factors that directly affect bike-sharing users' willingness to pay. And perceived usefulness, perceived ease-of-use, perceived cost, and perceived risk indirectly affect bike-sharing users' willingness to pay. However, we found no significant effects of perceived entertainment on perceived value or word of mouth on willingness to pay. Our results are expected to provide theoretical and practical implications for bike-sharing programs.

This study assesses the relationship between social capital and self-reported health (SRH) by comparing different genders and ages. It utilizes data from the 2016 China Family Panel Study data with a sample of 30,657 adult individuals from 25 provincial-level administrative regions in China. This was a cross-sectional study conducted with computer-assisted face-to-face interviews to assess social capital and self-rated health among Chinese adults. A multi-level Poisson regression model is employed to model social capital-related dependent variables using the independent variable of fair/poor health status. In terms of social relations, mobile phone use can improve men's health. However, this effect is insignificant for women. Moreover, gender and age interact with the relationship between social capital and individual health. The relationship between trust and self-rated health is not significantly different between men and women. The frequency of feeling lonely and the lack of feelings for the community in which they live have a negative impact on self-rated health, but there are no obvious differences in terms of gender. The number of meals per week with family members is negatively correlated with men's SRH, but there is no correlation with adult women 41 and above. Lack of help from neighbors is negatively correlated with men's health, but not with that of adult women 40 and below. Being a member of the Chinese Communist Party or a member of the Chinese Communist Youth League is positively correlated with SRH for women 60 and above.

Perceived social discrimination in China has significant effects on drinking behavior. This finding was reached through multivariate logistic regression analysis of a sample of 22,566 adults in the 2016 China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). This was a cross-sectional study conducted with computer-assisted face-to-face interviews to assess alcohol drinking problems and associated factors among Chinese adults. The proportion of adults prone to alcoholism tends to be higher in eastern than central China, and higher in central than western China. Furthermore, gender discrimination and delays in government interactions as a result of unfair treatment have a positive and significant effect on individuals' drinking. The alcohol consumption rate among Chinese men is about 13 times that of Chinese women. Additionally, older people have a stronger tendency to drink alcohol. In terms of education, those with lower education levels are more prone to alcoholism than those with higher education levels. Regarding marital status, those who are married are more prone to alcoholism than those who are not. Further, those who have been diagnosed with a chronic disease within the past six months are less prone to alcoholism than those without such diagnosis. People with an annual income between 50,000 and 150,000 yuan are more prone to alcoholism than those with an income under 50,000 yuan. Groups that have experienced unequal treatment in public services are also more prone to alcoholism than those who do not suffer such unequal treatment.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this retrospective case-control study was to compare the treatment effectiveness and efficiency of the Invisalign system with conventional fixed appliances in treating orthodontic patients with mild to moderate malocclusion in a graduate orthodontic clinic. METHODS: Using the peer assessment rating (PAR) index, we evaluated pretreatment and posttreatment records of 48 Invisalign patients and 48 fixed appliances patients. The 2 groups of patients were controlled for general characteristics and initial severity of malocclusion. We analyzed treatment outcome, duration, and improvement between the Invisalign and fixed appliances groups. RESULTS: The average pretreatment PAR scores (United Kingdom weighting) were 20.81 for Invisalign and 22.79 for fixed appliances (P = 1.0000). Posttreatment weighted PAR scores between Invisalign and fixed appliances were not statistically different (P = 0.7420). On average, the Invisalign patients finished 5.7 months faster than did those with fixed appliances (P = 0.0040). The weighted PAR score reduction with treatment was not statistically different between the Invisalign and fixed appliances groups (P = 0.4573). All patients in both groups had more than a 30% reduction in the PAR scores. Logistic regression analysis indicated that the odds of achieving "great improvement" in the Invisalign group were 0.329 times the odds of achieving "great improvement" in the fixed appliances group after controlling for age (P = 0.0150). CONCLUSIONS: Our data showed that both Invisalign and fixed appliances were able to improve the malocclusion. Invisalign patients finished treatment faster than did those with fixed appliances. However, it appears that Invisalign may not be as effective as fixed appliances in achieving "great improvement" in a malocclusion. This study might help clinicians to determine appropriate patients for Invisalign treatment.

Human nuclease Artemis belongs to the metallo-beta-lactamase protein family. It acquires double-stranded DNA endonuclease activity in the presence of DNA-PKcs. This double-stranded DNA endonuclease activity is critical for opening DNA hairpins in V(D)J recombination and is thought to be important for processing overhangs during the nonhomologous DNA end joining (NHEJ) process. Here we show that purified human Artemis exhibits single-stranded DNA endonuclease activity. This activity is proportional to the amount of highly purified Artemis from a gel filtration column. The activity is stimulated by DNA-PKcs and modulated by purified antibodies raised against Artemis. Moreover, the divalent cation-dependence and sequence-dependence of this single-stranded endonuclease activity is the same as the double-stranded DNA endonuclease activity of Artemis:DNA-PKcs. These findings further expand the range of DNA substrates upon which Artemis and Artemis:DNA-PKcs can act. The findings are discussed in the context of NHEJ.

Double-strand breaks (DSBs) arise in dividing cells about ten times per cell per day. Causes include replication across a nick, free radicals of oxidative metabolism, ionizing radiation, and inadvertent action by enzymes of DNA metabolism (such as failures of type II topoisomerases or cleavage by recombinases at off-target sites). There are two major double-strand break repair pathways. Homologous recombination (HR) can repair double-strand breaks, but only during S phase and typically only if there are hundreds of base pairs of homology. The more commonly used pathway is nonhomologous DNA end joining, abbreviated NHEJ. NHEJ can repair a DSB at any time during the cell cycle and does not require any homology, although a few nucleotides of terminal microhomology are often utilized by the NHEJ enzymes, if present. The proteins and enzymes of NHEJ include Ku, DNA-PKcs, Artemis, DNA polymerase mu (Pol micro), DNA polymerase lambda (Pol lambda), XLF (also called Cernunnos), XRCC4, and DNA ligase IV. These enzymes constitute what some call the classical NHEJ pathway, and in wild type cells, the vast majority of joining events appear to proceed using these components. NHEJ is present in many prokaryotes, as well as all eukaryotes, and very similar mechanistic flexibility evolved both convergently and divergently. When two double-strand breaks occur on different chromosomes, then the rejoining is almost always done by NHEJ. The causes of DSBs in lymphomas most often involve the RAG or AID enzymes that function in the specialized processes of antigen receptor gene rearrangement.

V(D)J recombination is one of the most complex DNA transactions in biology. The RAG complex makes double-stranded breaks adjacent to signal sequences and creates hairpin coding ends. Here, we find that the kinase activity of the Artemis:DNA-PKcs complex can be activated by hairpin DNA ends in cis, thereby allowing the hairpins to be nicked and then to undergo processing and joining by nonhomologous DNA end joining. Based on these insights, we have reconstituted many aspects of the antigen receptor diversification of V(D)J recombination by using 13 highly purified polypeptides, thereby permitting variable domain exon assembly by using this fully defined system in accord with the 12/23 rule for this process. The features of the recombination sites created by this system include all of the features observed in vivo (nucleolytic resection, P nucleotides, and N nucleotide addition), indicating that most, if not all, of the end modification enzymes have been identified.

The phosphorylation of histone variant H2AX at DNA double-strand breaks is believed to be critical for recognition and repair of DNA damage. However, little is known about the molecular mechanism regulating the exchange of variant H2AX with conventional H2A in the context of the nucleosome. Here, we isolate the H2AX-associated factors, which include FACT (Spt16/SSRP1), DNA-PK, and PARP1 from a human cell line. Our analyses demonstrate that the H2AX-associated factors efficiently promote both integration and dissociation of H2AX and this exchange reaction is mainly catalyzed by FACT among the purified factors. The phosphorylation of H2AX by DNA-PK facilitates the exchange of nucleosomal H2AX by inducing conformational changes of the nucleosome. In contrast, poly-ADP-ribosylation of Spt16 by PARP1 significantly inhibits FACT activities for H2AX exchange. Thus, these data establish FACT as the major regulator involved in H2AX exchange process that is modulated by H2AX phosphorylation and Spt16 ADP-ribosylation.
