RESUMEN

Industrial quantities of tight gas from the Carboniferous Benxi Formation have been found in the southern Ordos Basin. The source and contributions from mudstone and coal in the Benxi Formation to the tight gas are still unclear, and the hydrocarbon generation potential and kinetics of the Benxi Formation mudstone have rarely been reported, which has halted resource evaluation of tight gas. Confined pyrolysis experiments were performed to determine the yields and kinetic parameters for gaseous hydrocarbon formation for a representative sample of a Benxi Formation mudstone from the Ordos Basin, with a hydrogen index (HI) of 137 mg/g TOC and T max of 434 °C. The maximum yield of C1-C5 hydrocarbons is 143 mg/g TOC. For samples with similar HI, Upper Paleozoic mudstone samples might have a higher total gas generation potential than Upper Paleozoic coal samples because of the more reducing environment during mudstone deposition, which is beneficial for the preservation of sedimentary lipids. Even though the HI of Upper Paleozoic coals is apparently higher than that of Upper Paleozoic mudstones, they have a similar late gas generation potential. Basin modeling shows that the amount of natural gas generated from Benxi Formation mudstone increases southward. Coaly source rocks from the Ordos Basin with a lower oil generation potential have more negative δ13C1 values when the vitrinite reflectance is lower than 1.4-1.7%. This phenomenon might be related to the more negative δ13C of wet gas or the small hydrocarbon molecules incorporated into the kerogen compared with the components generating primary cracking gases. This study deepens the understanding of gaseous hydrocarbons generated from mudstone and coal in transitional depositional environments and provides the key parameters for tight gas resources in this area.

Zn anodes suffer from poor reversibility and stability owing to nonuniform dendrite growth and self-corrosion. Here, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMImAc) is introduced to reconstruct interfacial electrical double layer with simultaneously manipulating the solvation environment and the adsorption situation on Zn anode. The acetate anions with high nucleophilicity can effectively alter the solvation shell around Zn2+ ions and immobilize the H2O molecules, thus weakening water activity and alleviating water-related parasitic reactions. Concomitantly, both the imidazolium cation and acetate anion are inclined to gather on Zn anode surface for constructing an electrostatic shielding layer, and meanwhile the chemisorbed acetate anions also contribute to accelerate the Zn(H2O)62+ desolvation process. Such a synergistic effect enables uniform electric field distribution and facilitates Zn ion flux, which mitigates the random diffusion of Zn2+ and finally promotes the dendrite-free deposition. As a result, the Zn/Zn symmetric cells with EMImAc-integrated aqueous electrolyte realize an excellent cycling lifespan of 7000 h (0.5 mA cm-2/0.25 mAh cm-2) and high Zn utilization of 61.3 % (15 mA cm-2/20 mAh cm-2). Furthermore, the effective of EMImAc additive is demonstrated in Zn/V2O5 cells. This work offers insights into the ionic liquid-integrated aqueous electrolytes to enhance the interface stability of Zn anode for rechargeable zinc batteries.

Background: Correctional officers face widespread workplace violence and the resulting overwork that can profoundly damage their physical and mental health. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the mediating role of overwork in the relationship between workplace violence and the manifestation of physical and mental health issues among correctional officers. Methods: This study enlisted 472 eligible participants. Cross-sectional data were obtained using the Chinese version of the Workplace Violence Scale (WVS), while the physical and mental health of correctional officers was evaluated through relevant scales. Analysis involved descriptive statistics, correlation analyses, and tests for mediation models. Results: The study found significant correlations between workplace violence, overwork, and various mental health variables (depression, anxiety, stress, suicidal ideation, and insomnia), with correlations ranging from 0.135 to 0.822 (p < 0.01). Mediation analysis revealed that workplace violence directly impacts correctional officers' physical and mental health (p < 0.001) and also has an indirect effect through overwork (p < 0.023). These findings underscore the substantial impact of workplace violence on the health of correctional officers, both directly and indirectly. Conclusion: Workplace violence and overwork significantly contribute to the physical and mental health challenges faced by correctional officers. Overwork acts as a mediator in the relationship between workplace violence and these health issues. The study suggests addressing workplace violence and mental health issues among correctional officers by increasing their numbers, improving the work environment, and implementing enhanced welfare policies.

BACKGROUND: Body-color polymorphisms in insects are often explained by environmental selective advantages. Differential fitness related to body coloration has been demonstrated in Myzus persicae (Sulzer): performance of the red morph is in general better than that of the green morph on tobacco plants. However, the molecular mechanism involved is largely unclear. RESULTS: Here we showed that the red morph of M. persicae had higher expression of a carotenoid desaturase CarD763 in the whole body, salivary gland and saliva relative to the green morph. Also, 18% individuals displayed faded red body color 5 days post dsCarD763 treatment. Furthermore, knockdown of CarD763 in the red morph significantly prolonged the time needed to locate phloem and shortened the duration of phloem feeding. Honeydew production and survival rate decreased as well. In contrast, overexpression of CarD763 in tobacco leaves facilitated aphid feeding, enhanced honeydew production and improved the survival rate of aphids. Compared with those fed by dsGFP aphids, plants infested by dsCarD763-treated aphids had higher ROS accumulation, lower lycopene content and photosynthetic rate, and maximum photon quantum yield. The reverse was true when plants overexpressed CarD763. CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrated that CarD763, a red morph-specific salivary protein, could enhance aphid feeding and early colonization by promoting plant photosynthesis. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Fungi constitute the Earth's second most diverse kingdom, however only a small percentage of these have been thoroughly examined and categorized for their secondary metabolites, which still limits our understanding of the ecological chemical and pharmacological potential of fungi. In this study, we explored members of the co-evolved termite-associated fungal genus Xylaria and identified a family of highly oxygenated polyketide-terpene hybrid natural products using an MS/MS molecular networking-based dereplication approach. Overall, we isolated six no yet reported xylasporin derivatives, of which xylasporin A (1) features a rare cyclic-carbonate moiety. Extensive comparative spectrometric (HRMS2) and spectroscopic (1D and 2D NMR) studies allowed to determine the relative configuration across the xylasporin family, which was supported by chemical shift calculations of more than 50 stereoisomers and DP4+ probability analyses. The absolute configuration of xylasporin A (1) was also proposed based on TDDFT-ECD calculations. Additionally, we were able to revise the relative and absolute configurations of co-secreted xylacremolide B produced by single x-ray crystallography. Comparative genomic and transcriptomic analysis allowed us to deduce the putative biosynthetic assembly line of xylasporins in the producer strain X802, and could guide future engineering efforts of the biosynthetic pathway.

Violent offending committed by people with schizophrenia has been a public concern. The present study aims to examine the incidence of violent offending among people with schizophrenia and its correlations with mental health resources and economic factors. In this study, an examination of violent offending by people with schizophrenia and those identified as not criminally responsible on account of mental disorder (NCRMD) between 2010 and 2019 in China's Hunan province was undertaken. Principal component analysis (PCA) and regression analyses were used to explore the association of violent offending in people with schizophrenia and those identified as NCRMD with violent offending in the general population, mental health medical resources, and provincial GDP. Between 2010 and 2019, a total of 2,093 people with schizophrenia committed violent offending in Hunan province, including 1,374 (65.6%) cases identified as NCRMD. Over the period, the incidence of violent offending in people with schizophrenia and those identified as NCRMD has been decreasing. The incidences were positively correlated with the incidence of violent offending in the general population and negatively associated with mental health resources and provincial GDP. These findings may be valuable in helping to develop strategies for violence prevention and risk management for people with schizophrenia.

The excavation and utilization of dormancy loci in breeding are effective endeavors for enhancing the resistance to pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) of wheat varieties. CH1539 is a wheat breeding line with high-level seed dormancy. To clarify the dormant loci carried by CH1539 and obtain linked molecular markers, in this study, a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population derived from the cross of weak dormant SY95-71 and strong dormant CH1539 was genotyped using the Wheat17K single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array, and a high-density genetic map covering 21 chromosomes and consisting of 2437 SNP markers was constructed. Then, the germination percentage (GP) and germination index (GI) of the seeds from each RIL were estimated. Two QTLs for GP on chromosomes 5A and 6B, and four QTLs for GI on chromosomes 5A, 6B, 6D and 7A were identified. Among them, the QTL on chromosomes 6B controlling both GP and GI, temporarily named QGp/Gi.sxau-6B, is a major QTL for seed dormancy with the maximum phenotypic variance explained of 17.66~34.11%. One PCR-based diagnostic marker Ger6B-3 for QGp/Gi.sxau-6B was developed, and the genetic effect of QGp/Gi.sxau-6B on the RIL population and a set of wheat germplasm comprising 97 accessions was successfully confirmed. QGp/Gi.sxau-6B located in the 28.7~30.9 Mbp physical position is different from all the known dormancy loci on chromosomes 6B, and within the interval, there are 30 high-confidence annotated genes. Our results revealed a novel QTL QGp/Gi.sxau-6B whose CH1539 allele had a strong and broad effect on seed dormancy, which will be useful in further PHS-resistant wheat breeding.

BACKGROUND: Violence in schizophrenia (SCZ) is a phenomenon associated with neurobiological factors. However, the neural mechanisms of violence in patients with SCZ are not yet sufficiently understood. Thus, this study aimed to explore the structural changes associated with the high risk of violence and its association with impulsiveness in patients with SCZ to reveal the possible neurobiological basis. METHOD: The voxel-based morphometry approach and whole-brain analyses were used to measure the alteration of gray matter volume (GMV) for 45 schizophrenia patients with violence (VSC), 45 schizophrenia patients without violence (NSC), and 53 healthy controls (HC). Correlation analyses were used to examine the association of impulsiveness and brain regions associated with violence. RESULTS: The results demonstrated reduced GMV in the right insula within the VSC group compared with the NSC group, and decreased GMV in the right temporal pole and left orbital part of superior frontal gyrus only in the VSC group compared to the HC group. Spearman correlation analyses further revealed a positive correlation between impulsiveness and GMV of the left superior temporal gyrus, bilateral insula and left medial orbital part of the superior frontal gyrus in the VSC group. CONCLUSION: Our findings have provided further evidence for structural alterations in patients with SCZ who had engaged in severe violence, as well as the relationship between the specific brain alterations and impulsiveness. This work provides neural biomarkers and improves our insight into the neural underpinnings of violence in patients with SCZ.

Zn anodes suffer from the formation of uncontrolled dendrites aggravated by the uneven electric field and the insulating by-product accumulation in aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Here, an effective strategy implemented by 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate (BMIHSO4) additive is proposed to synergistically tune the crystallographic orientation of zinc deposition and suppress the formation of zinc hydroxide sulfate for enhancing the reversibility on Zn anode surface. As a competing cation, BMI+ is proved to preferably adsorb on Zn-electrode compared with H2O molecules, which shields the "tip effect" and inhibits the Zn-deposition agglomerations to inducing the horizontal growth along Zn (002) crystallographic texture. Simultaneously, the protonated BMIHSO4 additives could remove the detrimental OH- in real-time to fundamentally eliminate the accumulation of 6Zn(OH)2·ZnSO4·4H2O and Zn4SO4(OH)6·H2O on Zn anode surface. Consequently, Zn anode exhibits an ultra-long cycling stability of one year (8762 h) at 0.2 mA cm-2/0.2 mAh cm-2, 3600 h at 2 mA cm-2/2 mAh cm-2 with a high plating cumulative capacity of 3.6 Ah cm-2, and a high average Coulombic efficiency of 99.6 % throughout 1000 cycles. This work of regulating Zn deposition texture combined with eliminating notorious by-products could offer a desirable way for stabilizing the Zn-anode/electrolyte interface in AZIBs.

Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been a global pandemic since it broke out, and integrated Chinese and Western medicine (ICWM) has played an important role in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. We aimed to analyze the published literature on ICWM for COVID-19 at home and abroad, and compare their differences on hotspots and research fronts. Methods: Publications before Oct 31, 2022 were retrieved from the Web of Science core database (WOS), PubMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure database (CNKI), Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform (Wanfang), China Science and Technology Journal Database (VIP), China Biology Medicine disc (CBM), CiteSpace and VOSviewer to summarize the basic characteristics of publications, countries, institutions, keywords, and citations. Results: We included 580 English papers and 1727 Chinese papers in this study. The development trends in China and other countries are relatively asynchronous and show a smooth growth trend for the future. The most productive countries were China, India, and the United States, while the most productive domestic research institution was the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. The clustering analysis of high-frequency keywords showed that Chinese literature focused on clinical studies of ICWM for COVID-19, such as retrospective studies, clinical features, and traditional Chinese medicine syndrome analysis, while English literature focused on therapeutic mechanism studies and evidence-based medicine studies, such as systematic reviews and meta-analysis, and both of them paid attention to network pharmacological research and Qingfei Paidu Decoction. Sorting out the top 10 highly cited articles, Huang CL's article published in Lancet in 2020 was regarded as a cornerstone in the field. Conclusion: The treatment of COVID-19 by ICWM has become a worldwide research hotspot. Although there are differences in the specific contents among countries, the development trend of research types to the mechanism of action, and the development trend of research contents to the recovery period treatment and the prevention of COVID-19 by ICWM are consistent.

BACKGROUND: The risk of workplace violence and job burnout among Chinese correctional officers is high. Stress and insomnia may influence the relationship between workplace violence and job burnout; however, this influence has been rarely studied. This study aimed to explore the effect of workplace violence on job burnout among Chinese correctional officers and to assess the contribution of stress and insomnia to this effect. METHODS: In this study, the workplace violence scale, the Assens insomnia scale, the 21-item Depression Anxiety Stress Scale, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey scale were used to assess the workplace violence, insomnia, stress, and job burnout experienced by the 472 correctional officers, respectively. RESULTS: The results showed that (1) workplace violence was significantly and positively predictive of job burnout, (2) workplace violence affected job burnout through the mediation of stress, (3) workplace violence affected job burnout through the mediation of insomnia, and (4) stress and insomnia played fully interlocking mediating roles in the effect of workplace violence on job burnout. CONCLUSION: Stress and insomnia may play a full mediating role in the relationship between workplace violence and job burnout. This suggested that correctional officers may take measures to reduce stress and improve insomnia, thereby reducing their job burnout. Further research may focus on the development of effective interventions to reduce stress and improve insomnia among correctional officers.

BACKGROUND: Correctional officers tend to have high levels of work-family conflict (WFC). WFC has been found associated with various forms of psychological distress and to affect the overall well-being of correctional officers. Burnout and resilience may affect the relationship between WFC and psychological distress, however, this association still remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of burnout on the relationship between WFC and anxiety/depression and the moderating role of resilience, within the context of correctional officers. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in China from October 2021 to January 2022. WFC, burnout, resilience, anxiety, and depression were evaluated using the Work-Family Conflict Scale (WFCS), Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS), 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10), and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS). Mediation and moderation models were then tested using the PROCESS macro in SPSS, with burnout being a mediator and resilience playing a moderating role in the relationship between WFC and anxiety/depression. RESULTS: A total of 472 correctional officers were included. Burnout was found to mediate the relationship between WFC and anxiety (b = 0.14, 95%CI [0.10, 0.19]) and the relationship between WFC and depression (b = 0.23, 95%CI [0.18, 0.28]). Additionally, resilience played a moderating role in the direct effect of WFC on anxiety (b = - 0.02, p < 0.01) and the first half of the indirect effect of WFC on anxiety (b = - 0.007, p < 0.05). Furthermore, resilience was also found to moderate the first half of the indirect effect of WFC on depression (b = - 0.02, p < 0.01), but not the direct effect of WFC on depression (b = - 0.005, p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The findings of the present study may improve our understanding by elucidating the fundamental mechanisms of the connection between WFC and psychological distress among correctional officers. The results have significant implications for policymakers and individuals, as they suggest that diverse interventions may help promote the mental well-being of correctional officers.

Accumulating evidence has suggested that the gut microbiome plays an important role in depression. Akkermansia muciniphila (AKK), a next-generation probiotic, shows a beneficial effect on immune and metabolic homeostasis. The relative abundance of AKK was found negatively correlated with depressive symptoms in both clinical and pre-clinical studies. To evaluate the potential antidepressant effect of AKK and explore the possible mechanism, we used chronic alcohol exposure and chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) to induce depressive-like behaviors in mice. We found that oral AKK administration significantly reduced the immobility time in the force swimming test (FST) and tail suspension test (TST) in the mice with chronic alcohol exposure and the CUMS mice. The sucrose preference in the mice receiving AKK was significantly increased in the sucrose preference test (SPT). More importantly, AKK implantation significantly increased the level of 5-HT in the gut and PFC of both the alcohol exposure mice and the CUMS mice. Furthermore, AKK had inhibited the expression of SERT in the gut but not in the brain for both NIAAA and the CUMS model mice. Interestingly, the expression of cFos in enteric nerves in the gut significantly decreased after AKK administration. In conclusion, our study demonstrated the antidepressant effect of AKK in mice exposed to alcohol exposure and CUMS, with the potential mechanism that AKK implantation might lead to an increased level of 5-HT and inhibited SERT expression in the gut, and might alter the gut-to-brain signal through suppression of enteric nerves activation.

The interfacial bonding of the four cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) in vacuum and solution conditions was analyzed by molecular dynamics simulation. The binding energies were calculated, and the sources of interface strength were analyzed by the formation and lifetime of hydrogen bonds. The adsorption between CNC/C-S-H was characterized by the movement of interfacial atoms and CNC's adsorption conformation. The types of the functional group determine the bonding of the CNC/C-S-H, and the interface adsorption in two simulation conditions both followed: CNC-C (carboxyl) > CNC-O (hydroxyl) > CNC-N (amino) > CNC-S (sulfonic). The bonding of the interface affects the load transferred between the matrix and CNC, which can be reflected in the overall mechanical properties of the mortar. The mechanical strength of the mortar is in line with the simulation results. CNC-C has the strongest reinforcement effect, while CNC-S has the weakness effect. In the solution simulation, there is almost no chemical adsorption between C-S-H and CNC-S; instead, CNC-S decreased the bonding between the matrix and reduced the strength of the sample. Scanning electron microscopy found that CNC was interspersed in the matrix, riveting the matrix and enhanced the stability of the mortar structure. The influence of CNC on the mortar structure was analyzed by the calcium to silicon ratio (C/S) and it was showed that CNC-C, CNC-O, and CNC-N have an enhancement effect, while CNC-S decreased the coherence of the cement matrix. Durability and nuclear magnetic resonance tests further verified the effect of the four CNCs on the structure of mortar, and results indicated that CNC-C, CNC-O, and CNC-N can control the growth of hydration crystals, fill the cracks, and reduced porosity of samples, while CNC-S reduces the compactness of hydration products and ultimately decreased the mechanical and durability properties of the mortar.

High-capacity O3-type layered sodium oxides are considered one of the most promising cathode materials for the next generation of Na-ion batteries (NIBs). However, these cathodes usually suffer from low high-rate capacity and poor cycling stability due to structure deformation, native air sensitivity, and interfacial side reactions. Herein, a multi-site substituted strategy is employed to enhance the stability of O3-type NaNi0.5 Mn0.5 O2 . Simulations indicate that the Ti substitution decreases the charge density of Ni ions and improves the antioxidative capability of the material. In addition, the synergistic effect of K+ and Ti4+ significantly reduces the formation energy of Na+ vacancy and delivers an ultra-low lattice strain during the repeated Na+ extraction/insertion. In situ characterizations verify that the complicated phase transformation is mitigated during the charge/discharge process, resulting in greatly improved structure stability. The co-substituted cathode delivers a high-rate capacity of 97 mAh g-1 at 5 C and excellent capacity retention of 81% after 400 cycles at 0.5 C. The full cell paired with commercial hard carbon anode also exhibits high capacity and long cycling life. This dual-ion substitution strategy will provide a universal approach for the new rational design of high-capacity cathode materials for NIBs.

BACKGROUND: Sodium channel genes, especially SCN1A, were reported to play an important role in the treatment outcomes of antiseizure medications. The aim of this study was to explore the association of SCN1A polymorphisms with efficacy and adverse drug reactions (ADRs) related to valproic acid (VPA) among Chinese children with epilepsy. METHODS: A total of 126 children with epilepsy treated with VPA for at least 12 months were enrolled in this study. Three single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of SCN1A including rs2298771, rs10167228, and rs3812718 were genotyped using Sequenom MassArray system. Bioinformatics tools were used to explore the potential targets and pathways of SCN1A in VPA-related ADRs. RESULTS: The three SNPs in this study were found to be closely associated with treatment outcomes for VPA. Carriers of SCN1A rs3812718 TT genotype tended to be seizure-free with VPA treatment (P = 0.007). AA genotype of rs10167228 and TT genotype of rs2298771 might be protective factors for weight gain induced by VPA, whereas TA genotype of rs10167228 and CT genotype of rs2298771 increased the risk. TAT haplotype carriers were found to respond better to VPA treatment (P = 0.017), whereas CTC haplotype might be a risk factor for VPA-induced weight gain (P = 0.035). Bioinformatics analysis suggested that SCN1A might play a role in VPA-induced weight gain by regulating gated channel activity and GABAergic synapse pathway. CONCLUSION: This study revealed that SCN1A rs2298771, rs10167228, and rs3812718 polymorphisms and haplotypes might affect the treatment outcomes of VPA in Chinese children with epilepsy.
