With the ability to maximize the exposure of nearly all active sites to reactions, two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) has become a fascinating new class of materials for electrocatalysis. Recently, electrochemical microcells have been developed, and their unique spatial-confined capability enables understanding of catalytic behaviors at a single material level, significantly promoting this field. This Review provides an overview of the recent progress in microcell-based TMD electrocatalyst studies. We first introduced the structural characteristics of TMD materials and discussed their site engineering strategies for electrocatalysis. Later, we comprehensively described two distinct types of microcells: the window-confined on-chip electrochemical microcell (OCEM) and the droplet-confined scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM). Their setups, working principles, and instrumentation were elucidated in detail, respectively. Furthermore, we summarized recent advances of OCEM and SECCM obtained in TMD catalysts, such as active site identification and imaging, site monitoring, modulation of charge injection and transport, and electrostatic field gating. Finally, we discussed the current challenges and provided personal perspectives on electrochemical microcell research.

Seed vigour, including rapid, uniform germination and robust seedling establishment under various field conditions, is becoming an increasingly essential agronomic trait for achieving high yield in crops. However, little is known about this important seed quality trait. In this study, we performed a genome-wide association study to identify a key transcription factor ZmRap2.7, which regulates seed vigour through transcriptionally repressing expressions of three ABA signalling genes ZmPYL3, ZmPP2C and ZmABI5 and two phosphatidylethanolamine-binding genes ZCN9 and ZCN10. In addition, ZCN9 and ZCN10 proteins could interact with ZmPYL3, ZmPP2C and ZmABI5 proteins, and loss-of-function of ZmRap2.7 and overexpression of ZCN9 and ZCN10 reduced ABA sensitivity and seed vigour, suggesting a complex regulatory network for regulation of ABA signalling mediated seed vigour. Finally, we showed that four SNPs in ZmRap2.7 coding region influenced its transcriptionally binding activity to the downstream gene promoters. Together with previously identified functional variants within and surrounding ZmRap2.7, we concluded that the distinct allelic variations of ZmRap2.7 were obtained independently during maize domestication and improvement, and responded separately for the diversities of seed vigour, flowering time and brace root development. These results provide novel genes, a new regulatory network and an evolutional mechanism for understanding the molecular mechanism of seed vigour.

Asthma, a chronic airway inflammatory disease, has a complicated pathogenesis and limited therapeutic treatment. Evidence shows that the intestinal microbiota exhibits crucial functional interaction with asthma syndrome. Liubao tea (LBT), a type of postfermented tea in China, positively modulates gut microbiota. However, the potential benefits of LBT extract (LBTE) for allergic asthma are still not understood. Herein, the anti-inflammatory effects of LBTE and its modulation of the gut microbiota of asthmatic mice induced by ovalbumin were explored. The results demonstrate that LBTE significantly inhibited airway hyper-responsiveness and restrained the proliferation of proinflammatory cytokines and inflammatory cells associated with allergic asthma. Additionally, LBTE suppressed inflammatory infiltration, mucus secretion, and excessive goblet cell production by downregulating the gene expression of inflammatory indicators. Interestingly, fecal microbiota transplantation results further implied that the modulation of LBTE on gut microbiota played an essential role in alleviating airway inflammatory symptoms of allergic asthma.

An uncommon benign condition in neonates, known as congenital epiglottic cyst, can lead to symptoms such as neonatal dyspnea, laryngeal stridor, and, in severe cases, even pose a potential threat of asphyxia-related mortality. A congenital epiglottic cyst is one of the neonatal emergencies. Fibrolaryngoscopy is the predominant method of diagnosis, and early identification, diagnosis, as well as treatment are the key points. Successful endoscopic ablation of congenital epiglottic cysts in 3 newborns was achieved through the utilization of a low-temperature plasma radiofrequency ablation system. Consequently, the purpose of this case report is to assist pediatric emergency physicians in the timely identification of congenital epiglottic cysts with the potential risk of mortality and to provide additional experience in clinical management.

To enhance the efficiency of catalysis, it is crucial to comprehend the behavior of individual nanowires/nanosheets. A developed on-chip microcell facilitates this study by creating a reaction window that exposes the catalyst region of interest. However, this technology's potential application is limited due to frequently-observed variations in data between different cells. In this study, we identify a conductance problem in the reaction windows of non-metallic catalysts as the cause of this issue. We investigate this problem using in-situ electronic/electrochemical measurements and atom-thin nanosheets as model catalysts. Our findings show that a full-open window, which exposes the entire catalyst channel, allows for efficient modulation of conductance, which is ten times higher than a half-open window. This often-overlooked factor has the potential to significantly improve the conductivity of non-metallic catalysts during the reaction process. After examining tens of cells, we develop a vertical microcell strategy to eliminate the conductance issue and enhance measurement reproducibility. Our study offers guidelines for conducting reliable microcell measurements on non-metallic single nanowire/nanosheet catalysts.

BACKGROUND: We did this network meta-analysis to comprehensively compare the efficacy of different segments [intermediate segment (IS), short segment (SS) and long segment (LS)] in the fixation of thoracolumbar fractures. METHODS: We searched studies from inception until January 20, 2023 through PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library. All studies comparing different segments in the fixation of thoracolumbar fractures were included in this meta-analysis. Outcomes were anterior vertebral height ratio (AVHR), sagittal Cobb angle (SCA), visual analogue scale score, and implant failure rate. This network meta-analysis was performed by R software with gemtc package. RESULTS: Finally, a total of 22 studies were finally included in this network meta-analysis. IS (WMD 2.43, 95% CrI 2.04-2.91) was more effective than SS in terms of the AVHR, and the difference was statistically significant. IS was more effective than LS in reducing SCA (WMD -2.87, 95% CrI -3.79 to -1.96) with statistically significant. Compared with SS, IS significantly reduced the SCA with statistically significant (WMD -2.52, 95% CrI -3.31 to -1.72). IS (WMD -2.87, 95% CrI -3.78 to -1.96) was more effective than LS, and the difference was statistically significant. Moreover, IS (WMD -2.52, 95% CrI -3.31 to -1.72) was more effective than SS, and the difference was statistically significant. CONCLUSION: IS was associated with a significant reduction in SCA, implant failure rate, and visual analogue scale compared to SS and LS, while having the most favorable impact on AVHR among all the treatments assessed.

Twin boundaries (TBs) in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) constitute distinctive one-dimensional electronic systems, exhibiting intriguing physical and chemical properties that have garnered significant attention in the fields of quantum physics and electrocatalysis. However, the controlled manipulation of TBs in terms of density and specific atomic configurations remains a formidable challenge. In this study, we present a non-epitaxial growth approach that enables the controlled and large-scale fabrication of homogeneous catalytically active TBs in monolayer TMDs on arbitrary substrates. Notably, the density achieved using this strategy is six times higher than that observed in convention chemical vapor deposition (CVD)-grown samples. Through rigorous experimental analysis and multigrain Wulff construction simulations, we elucidate the role of regulating the metal source diffusion process, which serves as the key factor for inducing the self-oriented growth of TMD grains and the formation of unified TBs. Furthermore, we demonstrate that this novel growth mode can be readily incorporated into the conventional CVD growth method by making a simple modification of the growth temperature profile, thereby offering a universal approach for engineering of grain boundaries in two-dimensional materials.

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a rare and complicated clinical disease entity newly identified in recent years. It is a chronic inflammatory disease mediated by the immune system that can affect various organs throughout the body, such as the pancreas, salivary gland (submandibular gland, parotid gland, and sublingual gland), lacrimal gland, and thyroid gland. In rare cases, it involves sinuses and orbits. We describe a 44-year-old patient who was hospitalized with distension and pain in her right eye. The lesions included the nasal sinus and orbit. IgG4-RD was diagnosed after surgery and the patient was treated without complications. This case report helps to provide clinicians with additional information to assist in the diagnosis of the disease.

Non-equilibrium multiphase systems are formed by mixing two immiscible nanoparticle dispersions, leading to bicontinuous emulsions that template cryogels with interconnected, tortuous channels. Herein, a renewable, rod-like biocolloid (chitin nanocrystals, ChNC) is used to kinetically arrest bicontinuous morphologies. Specifically, it is found that ChNC stabilizes intra-phase jammed bicontinuous systems at an ultra-low particle concentration (as low as 0.6 wt.%), leading to tailorable morphologies. The synergistic effects of ChNC high aspect ratio, intrinsic stiffness, and interparticle interactions produce hydrogelation and, upon drying, lead to open channels bearing dual characteristic sizes, suitably integrated into robust bicontinuous ultra-lightweight solids. Overall, it demonstrates the successful formation of ChNC-jammed bicontinuous emulsions and a facile emulsion templating route to synthesize chitin cryogels that form unique super-macroporous networks.

Pickering emulsions are stabilized using complexes of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and nanochitin (NCh). The colloidal behavior and heteroaggregation in aqueous media are studied in relation to complex formation and net charge. The complexes are remarkably effective in stabilizing oil-in-water Pickering emulsions under conditions of slightly net positive or negative charges, as determined by the CNC/NCh mass ratio. Close to charge neutrality (CNC/NCh ~5), large heteroaggregates form, resulting in unstable emulsions. By contrast, under net cationic conditions, interfacial arrest of the complexes leads to non-deformable emulsion droplets with high stability (no creaming for 9 months). At given CNC/NCh concentrations, emulsions with up to 50% oil fraction are produced. This study shows how to control emulsion properties beyond consideration of the typical formulation variables, for instance, through adjusting CNC/NCh ratio or charge stoichiometry. We highlight the possibilities that are available for emulsion stabilization by using a combination of polysaccharide nanoparticles.

Stress can suppress reproduction capacity in either wild or domestic animals, but the exact mechanism behind it, especially in terms of steroidogenesis, remains under-investigated so far. Considering the important roles of progesterone in avian breeding, we investigated the modulation of corticosterone on progesterone production in cultured granulosa cells of chicken follicles at different developmental stages. Using enzyme immunoassays, our study showed that corticosterone could only inhibit progesterone synthesis in granulosa cells from F5-6, F4, and F3 follicles, but not F2 and F1 follicles. Coincidentally, both quantitative real-time PCR and western blotting revealed that corticosterone could downregulate steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) expression, suggesting the importance of StAR in corticosterone-related actions. Using the dual-luciferase reporter system, we found that corticosterone can potentially enhance, rather than inhibit, the activity of StAR promoter. Of note, combining high-throughput transcriptomic analysis and quantitative real-time PCR, phosphodiesterase 10A (PDE10A), protein kinase cAMP-dependent type II regulatory subunit alpha (PRKAR2A) and cAMP responsive element modulator (CREM) were identified to exhibit the differential expression patterns consistent with cAMP blocking in granulosa cells from F5-6, F4, and F3, but not F2 and F1 follicles. Afterward, the expression profiles of these genes in granulosa cells of distinct developmental-stage follicles were examined by quantitative real-time PCR, in which all of them expressed correspondingly with progesterone levels of granulosa cells during development. Collectively, these findings indicate that corticosterone can stage-dependently inhibit progesterone production in granulosa cells of chicken preovulatory follicles, through impeding cAMP-induced StAR activity presumptively.

Here, we describe the all-aqueous bicontinuous emulsions with cholesteric liquid crystal domains through hierarchical colloidal self-assembly of nanoparticles. This is achieved by homogenization of a rod-like cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) with two immiscible, phase separating polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextran polymer solutions. The dispersed CNCs exhibit unequal affinity for the binary polymer mixtures that depends on the balance of osmotic and chemical potential between the two phases. Once at the critical concentration, CNC particles are constrained within one component of the polymer phases and self-assemble into a cholesteric organization. The obtained liquid crystal emulsion demonstrates a confined three-dimensional percolating bicontinuous network with cholesteric self-assembly of CNC within the PEG phase; meanwhile, the nanoparticles in the dextran phase remain isotropic instead. Our results provide an alternative way to arrest bicontinuous structures through intraphase trapping and assembling of nanoparticles, which is a viable and flexible route to extend for a wide range of colloidal systems.

Dynamic Vision Sensor (DVS) event camera output includes uninformative background activity (BA) noise events that increase dramatically under dim lighting. Existing denoising algorithms are not effective under these high noise conditions. Furthermore, it is difficult to quantitatively compare algorithm accuracy. This paper proposes a novel framework to better quantify BA denoising algorithms by measuring receiver operating characteristics with known mixtures of signal and noise DVS events. New datasets for stationary and moving camera applications of DVS in surveillance and driving are used to compare 3 new low-cost algorithms: Algorithm 1 checks distance to past events using a tiny fixed size window and removes most of the BA while preserving most of the signal for stationary camera scenarios. Algorithm 2 uses a memory proportional to the number of pixels for improved correlation checking. Compared with existing methods, it removes more noise while preserving more signal. Algorithm 3 uses a lightweight multilayer perceptron classifier driven by local event time surfaces to achieve the best accuracy over all datasets. The code and data are shared with the paper as DND21.

OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to determine the effects of montelukast sodium combined with budesonide on pulmonary function, serum immunoglobulin (Ig)E levels, and eosinophil (EOS) percentage in children comorbid with allergic rhinitis (AR) and asthma. METHODS: The medical records of 114 children comorbid with AR and asthma treated in the Guizhou Provincial People's Hospital from February 2020 to September 2022 were collected and analyzed retrospectively. Among them, 54 children treated with budesonide were assigned to a control group, and the remaining 60 children treated with montelukast sodium combined with budesonide were assigned to an observation group. The efficacy was compared between the two groups. Additionally, the changes in pulmonary function, serum IgE levels, and EOS percentage were compared between the two groups before and after treatment (one month). The adverse reactions during the treatment and the recurrence of AR within 3 months were recorded. Logistics regression was conducted to analyze the risk factors affecting the efficacy in children. RESULTS: The observation group showed a significantly higher overall response rate than the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the observation group showed significantly higher levels of forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1)%, FEV1/forced vital capacity (FVC), and peak expiratory flow (PEF) than the control group (P<0.05), and significantly lower IgE levels and EOS percentage than the control group (P<0.05). No significant difference was found between the two groups in terms of the total incidence of adverse reactions (P>0.05). According to the follow-up results of prognosis, the observation group presented a greatly lower recurrence rate of AR within 3 months than the control group (P<0.05). Multivariate logistics regression analysis showed that therapeutic regimen, IgE, and EOS were independent risk factors affecting the efficacy in the patients (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Montelukast sodium combined with budesonide can substantially improve the pulmonary function in children with comorbid AR and asthma, alleviate their symptoms of asthma and rhinitis, and lower the IgE level and EOS percentage. In addition, therapeutic regimen, IgE and EOS are independent risk factors affecting the efficacy in patients.

Accurate location-based big data has a high resolution and a direct interaction with human activities, allowing for fine-scale population spatial data to be realized. We take the average of Tencent user location big data as a measure of ambient population. The county-level statistical population data in 2018 was used as the assigned input data. The log linear spatially weighted regression model was used to establish the relationship between location data and statistical data to allocate the latter to a 0.01° grid, and the ambient population data of mainland China was obtained. Extracting street-level (lower than county-level) statistics for accuracy testing, we found that POP2018 has the best fit with the actual permanent population (R2 = 0.91), and the error is the smallest (MSEPOP2018 = 22.48

Objectives: More and more countries have decided to cancel most or even all COVD-19 restrictions. However, it is unclear how ending of restrictions will affect primary care providers' job satisfaction and organizational commitment. Our objectives are to explore the current status and possible change in primary care providers' job satisfaction and organizational commitment after massive restriction policies ended in China. Methods: This was a mixed-method study that utilized structured questionnaires and semi-structured qualitative individual interviews. The 20-item Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) and 25-item organizational commitment survey were adopted to assess job satisfaction and organization commitment. Descriptive statistics and mediation models, as well as inductive thematic analysis, were used to analyze quantitative and qualitative data. Results: A total of 18 interviews and 435 valid survey responses were included in our analysis. The average scores for job satisfaction and organizational commitment were 80.6 and 90.8. The thematic analysis revealed one major theme: ethical and moral responsibility to provide care as primary care providers, on which we established a mediation model. The mediation analysis revealed that normative commitment could positively affect the other four dimensions of organizational commitment and job satisfaction. The direct effect of affective commitment on job satisfaction was significant (LLCI = 0.11, ULCI = 0.31), and the mediators were identified to have a partial mediating effect instead of a total mediating effect. Conclusion: After COVID-19 restrictions end, the job satisfaction and organizational commitment of primary care providers will return to levels before the pandemic and during this estimated process, a brief rise in resignation is predictable. The normative commitment positively affects the other four dimensions of organizational commitment and job satisfaction for primary care providers, which suggests a possible way to motivate primary care providers when restrictions end.
