Females typically live longer than males but, paradoxically, spend a greater number of later years in poorer health. The neuromuscular system is a critical component of the progression to frailty, and motor unit (MU) characteristics differ by sex in healthy young individuals and may adapt to ageing in a sex-specific manner due to divergent hormonal profiles. The purpose of this study was to investigate sex differences in vastus lateralis (VL) MU structure and function in early to late elderly humans. Intramuscular electromyography signals from 50 healthy older adults (M/F: 26/24) were collected from VL during standardized submaximal contractions and decomposed to quantify MU characteristics. Muscle size and neuromuscular performance were also measured. Females had higher MU firing rate (FR) than males (P = 0.025), with no difference in MU structure or neuromuscular junction transmission (NMJ) instability. All MU characteristics increased from low- to mid-level contractions (P < 0.05) without sex × level interactions. Females had smaller cross-sectional area of VL, lower strength and poorer force steadiness (P < 0.05). From early to late elderly, both sexes showed decreased neuromuscular function (P < 0.05) without sex-specific patterns. Higher VL MUFRs at normalized contraction levels previously observed in young are also apparent in old individuals, with no sex-based difference of estimates of MU structure or NMJ transmission instability. From early to late elderly, the deterioration of neuromuscular function and MU characteristics did not differ between sexes, yet function was consistently greater in males. These parallel trajectories underscore the lower initial level for older females and may offer insights into identifying critical intervention periods. KEY POINTS: Females generally exhibit an extended lifespan when compared to males, yet this is accompanied by a poorer healthspan and higher rates of frailty. In healthy young people, motor unit firing rate (MUFR) at normalized contraction intensities is widely reported to be higher in females than in age-matched males. Here we show in 50 people that older females have higher MUFR than older males with little difference in other MU parameters. The trajectory of decline from early to late elderly does not differ between sexes, yet function is consistently lower in females. These findings highlight distinguishable sex disparities in some MU characteristics and neuromuscular function, and suggest early interventions are needed for females to prevent functional deterioration to reduce the ageing health-sex paradox.

Although muscle atrophy may partially account for age-related strength decline, it is further influenced by alterations of neural input to muscle. Persistent inward currents (PIC) and the level of common synaptic inputs to motoneurons influence neuromuscular function. However, these have not yet been described in the aged human quadriceps. High-density surface electromyography (HDsEMG) signals were collected from the vastus lateralis of 15 young (mean ± SD, 23 ± 5 y) and 15 older (67 ± 9 y) men during submaximal sustained and 20-s ramped contractions. HDsEMG signals were decomposed to identify individual motor unit discharges, from which PIC amplitude and intramuscular coherence were estimated. Older participants produced significantly lower knee extensor torque (p < 0.001) and poorer force tracking ability (p < 0.001) than young. Older participants also had lower PIC amplitude (p = 0.001) and coherence estimates in the alpha frequency band (p < 0.001) during ramp contractions when compared to young. Persistent inward currents and common synaptic inputs are lower in the vastus lateralis of older males when compared to young. These data highlight altered neural input to the clinically and functionally important quadriceps, further underpinning age-related loss of function which may occur independently of the loss of muscle mass.

BACKGROUND: Estrogen and progesterone are the primary female sex hormones and have net excitatory and inhibitory effects, respectively, on neuronal function. Fluctuating concentrations across the menstrual cycle has led to several lines of research in relation to neuromuscular function and performance; however evidence from animal and cell culture models has yet to be demonstrated in human motor units coupled with quantification of circulating hormones. Intramuscular electromyography was used to record motor unit potentials and corresponding motor unit potential trains from the vastus lateralis of nine eumenorrheic females during the early follicular, ovulation and mid luteal phases of the menstrual cycle, alongside assessments of neuromuscular performance. Multi-level regression models were applied to explore effects of time and of contraction level. Statistical significance was accepted as p < 0.05. RESULTS: Knee extensor maximum voluntary contraction, jump power, force steadiness, and balance did not differ across the menstrual phases (all p > 0.4). Firing rate of low threshold motor units (10% maximum voluntary contraction) was lower during the ovulation and mid luteal phases (ß = - 0.82 Hz, p < 0.001), with no difference in motor unit potentials analysed from 25% maximum voluntary contraction contractions. Motor unit potentials were more complex during ovulation and mid luteal phase (p < 0.03), with no change in neuromuscular junction transmission instability (p > 0.3). CONCLUSIONS: Assessments of neuromuscular performance did not differ across the menstrual cycle. The suppression of low threshold motor unit firing rate during periods of increased progesterone may suggest a potential inhibitory effect and an alteration of recruitment strategy; however this had no discernible effect on performance. These findings highlight contraction level-dependent modulation of vastus lateralis motor unit function over the eumenorrheic cycle, occurring independently of measures of performance.

In this paper, a photonic-assisted system for simultaneous and unambiguous measurement of the Doppler frequency shift (DFS) and angle-of-arrival (AOA) using a dual-parallel dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DP-DDMZM) is proposed and investigated. The echo signals received by two receiving antennas are applied to the radio frequency ports of one sub-DDMZM of the DP-DDMZM. The bias port of the sub-DDMZM is fed by a binary electrical signal that is used to construct two different mapping curves on the relationship between the phase difference and the power of the output intermediate frequency (IF) signal. Therefore, unambiguous AOA measurement with extended range can be realized. The transmitted signal is input into the other sub-DDMZM to implement single-sideband modulation, which is then frequency shifted based on serrodyne modulation. Both the value and direction of DFS can be derived intuitively from the frequency of the output IF signal. Simulation results show that the measurement error of unambiguous DFS measurement is no more than ±0.008H z in the range of -100k H z to 100 kHz, and the measurement error of unambiguous AOA is less than ±0.2∘ in the range of -70.8∘ to 70.8°. Moreover, since the scheme does not involve the construction of multi-channels or use of any filter or polarization dependent device, the system has concise structure, high accuracy, large operating bandwidth, and strong robustness, and can be considered as a very promising solution for actual applications.

A novel photonic method for multi-format chirped signal generation with a high switching rate based on a dual-polarization binary phase shift keying (DP-BPSK) modulator is proposed and demonstrated. An up-chirp signal and a binary code signal are used to drive one of the sub-dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulators (sub-DDMZMs) integrated in the DP-BPSK modulator. Another integrated sub-DDMZM is driven by a down-chirp signal and another binary code signal. By carefully tuning the DC biases of the DP-BPSK modulator, the format of the output chirped signal is controlled by the binary code signals. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed and multi-format chirped signals with a high switching rate are generated. Due to the high switching rate, simple structure, and high adjustability, the proposed multi-format chirped signal generator may find potential applications in multifunctional radar systems, wireless communication systems, and dual-function radar-communication systems.

Investigation of the fundamental coordination chemistry between U(VI) and simple organic ligands is important to understand the chemical behavior of U(VI) in the natural environment and separation processes. In this work, the complexation of U(VI) with a common carboxylic acid, benzoic acid, has been systematically investigated through potentiometry, spectrometry and DFT calculations. Three successive complexes (UO2L+, UO2L2 and UO2L3-, L = benzoate ion) between U(VI) and benzoic acid are successfully identified in aqueous solution and their corresponding thermodynamic parameters (stability constant, enthalpy and entropy) are determined. Notably, this is the first time that the previously missing 1 : 2 and 1 : 3 (U to L) complexes in aqueous solution and their complexation thermodynamics have been reported, which would aid in more accurate prediction of the chemical behavior of U(VI) in the presence of benzoic acid. Moreover, the structures of the complexes are elucidated using DFT calculations, which show that benzoic acid coordinates to U(VI) in a bidentate form in all the complexes.

Catalytic oxidation technology is currently considered as a feasible approach to degrade and mineralize volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, it is still challenging to realize efficient removal of VOCs through catalytic oxidation at room temperature. In our study, a novel flow-through electrocatalytic reactor was designed, composed of porous solid-electrolyte, gas-permeable titanium sub-oxides/titanium-foam (TiSO/Ti-foam) as anode and platinum coated titanium foam (Pt/Ti-foam) as cathode. This device could oxidize nearly 100% of benzene (10 ppm) to carbon dioxide at a current density of 1.2 mA/cm2 under room temperature. More importantly, the device maintained excellent stability over 1000 h. Mechanism of benzene mineralization was discussed. Hydroxyl radicals generated on the TiSO/Ti-foam anode played a crucial role in the oxidation of benzene. This study provides a promising prototype of the electrochemical air purifier, and may find its application in domestic and industrial air pollution control.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Conflicting evidence exists on motor unit (MU) firing rate in response to exercise-induced fatigue, possibly due to the contraction modality used: Do MU properties adapt similarly following concentric and eccentric loading? What is the main finding and its importance? MU firing rate increased following eccentric loading only despite a decline in absolute force. Force steadiness deteriorated following both loading methods. Central and peripheral MU features are altered in a contraction type-dependant manner, which is an important consideration for training interventions. ABSTRACT: Force output of muscle is partly mediated by the adjustment of motor unit (MU) firing rate (FR). Disparities in MU features in response to fatigue may be influenced by contraction type, as concentric (CON) and eccentric (ECC) contractions demand variable amounts of neural input, which alters the response to fatigue. This study aimed to determine the effects of fatigue following CON and ECC loading on MU features of the vastus lateralis (VL). High-density surface (HD-sEMG) and intramuscular (iEMG) electromyography were used to record MU potentials (MUPs) from bilateral VLs of 12 young volunteers (six females) during sustained isometric contractions at 25% and 40% of the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC), before and after completing CON and ECC weighted stepping exercise. Multi-level mixed effects linear regression models were performed with significance assumed as P < 0.05. MVC decreased in both CON and ECC legs post-exercise (P < 0.0001), as did force steadiness at both 25% and 40% MVC (P < 0.004). MU FR increased in ECC at both contraction levels (P < 0.001) but did not change in CON. FR variability increased in both legs at 25% and 40% MVC following fatigue (P < 0.01). From iEMG measures at 25% MVC, MUP shape did not change (P > 0.1) but neuromuscular junction transmission instability increased in both legs (P < 0.04), and markers of fibre membrane excitability increased following CON only (P = 0.018). These data demonstrate that central and peripheral MU features are altered following exercise-induced fatigue and differ according to exercise modality. This is important when considering interventional strategies targeting MU function.

An approach for simultaneous modulation format identification (MFI) and optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) monitoring in digital coherent optical communications is proposed based on optoelectronic reservoir computing (RC) and the signal's amplitude histograms (AHs) obtained after the adaptive post-equalization. The optoelectronic RC is implemented using a Mach-Zehnder modulator and optoelectronic delay feedback loop. We investigate the performance of the proposed model with the number of symbols, bins of AHs and the hyperparameters of optoelectronic RC. The results show that 100% MFI accuracy can be achieved simultaneously with accurate OSNR estimation for different modulation formats under study. The lowest achievable OSNR estimation mean absolute errors for the dual-polarization (DP)-quadrature phase-shift keying signal, the DP-16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) signal, and the DP-64QAM signal are 0.2 dB, 0.32 dB and 0.53 dB, respectively. The robustness of the proposed scheme is also evaluated when the optoelectronic RC is in presence of additive white Gaussian noises. Then, a proof of concept experiment is demonstrated to further verify our proposed method. The proposed approach offers a potential solution for next-generation intelligent optical performance monitoring in the physical layer.

Due to their low cost, tunable band gap and excellent thermostability, all-inorganic halide perovskites CsPbX3 (X = Br, I) have become a kind of promising photovoltaic material. However, compared to the organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells, the performance of CsPbX3 solar cells still needs to be improved. In this work, for the first time, we applied the sol-gel derived amorphous InGaZnO4 film as electron transport layers (ETLs) in CsPbX3-based devices. In these devices, the carbon electrode deposited by screen printing replaced the unstable hole transport layer and the expensive metal electrode to obtain hole transport free carbon-based devices, which significantly simplifies the preparation process and reduces the production cost. With the application of amorphous InGaZnO4 films, devices show a relatively high power conversion efficiency (9.07%) and excellent thermal stability. Compared with the reported CsPbX3 devices using SnO2 or TiO2 ETLs, the performance of amorphous InGaZnO4 based devices has been significantly improved. This work provides a promising route to prepare highly thermally stable all-inorganic perovskite solar cells using a-IGZO films.

Microbial antagonists are effective and environmentally friendly in controlling postharvest diseases of fruit. The present study investigated the influence of D. nepalensis on epiphytic microbiome and postharvest decay of jujube. Results showed that D. nepalensis notably reduced fungal decay, maintained the fruit firmness and delayed discoloration. The epiphytic microbiome revealed that D. nepalensis changed the fungal communities, but few influence on bacterial communities were observed. D. nepalensis, as the dominant population in the treatment group, decreased the abundance of pathogenic fungi of Alternaria, Penicillium, Fusarium and Botrytis, while increased the beneficial bacteria of Pantoea. The canonical correspondence analysis revealed that Debaryomyces was negatively correlated with the decay rate, whereas Penicillium, Acremonium, Rhodosporidiobolus and Hansfordia were positively correlated. In conclusion, D. nepalensis altered the successional process of fungal and bacterial communities to reduce the decay rate of jujube during storage.

AIM: Despite males typically exhibiting greater muscle strength and fatigability than females, it remains unclear if there are sex-based differences in neuromuscular recruitment strategies e.g. recruitment and modulation of motor unit firing rate (MU FR) at normalized forces and during progressive increases in force. METHODS: The study includes 29 healthy male and 31 healthy female participants (18-35 years). Intramuscular electromyography (iEMG) was used to record individual motor unit potentials (MUPs) and near-fibre MUPs from the vastus lateralis (VL) during 10% and 25% maximum isometric voluntary contractions (MVC), and spike-triggered averaging was used to obtain motor unit number estimates (MUNE) of the VL. RESULTS: Males exhibited greater muscle strength (P < .001) and size (P < .001) than females, with no difference in force steadiness at 10% or 25% MVC. Females had 8.4% and 6.5% higher FR at 10% and 25% MVC, respectively (both P < .03), while the MUP area was 33% smaller in females at 10% MVC (P < .02) and 26% smaller at 25% MVC (P = .062). However, both sexes showed similar increases in MU size and FR when moving from low- to mid-level contractions. There were no sex differences in any near-fibre MUP parameters or in MUNE. CONCLUSION: In the vastus lateralis, females produce muscle force via different neuromuscular recruitment strategies to males which is characterized by smaller MUs discharging at higher rates. However, similar strategies are employed to increase force production from low- to mid-level contractions. These findings of similar proportional increases between sexes support the use of mixed sex cohorts in studies of this nature.

Long-term exercise training has been considered as an effective strategy to counteract age-related hormonal declines and minimise muscle atrophy. However, human data relating circulating hormone levels with motor nerve function are scant. The aims of the study were to explore associations between circulating sex hormone levels and motor unit (MU) characteristics in older men, including masters athletes competing in endurance and power events. Forty-three older men (mean ± SD age: 69.9 ± 4.6 years) were studied based on competitive status. The serum concentrations of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), total testosterone (T) and estradiol were quantified using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. Intramuscular electromyographic signals were recorded from vastus lateralis (VL) during 25% of maximum voluntary isometric contractions and processed to extract MU firing rate (FR), and motor unit potential (MUP) features. After adjusting for athletic status, MU FR was positively associated with DHEA levels (p = 0.019). Higher testosterone and estradiol were associated with lower MUP complexity; these relationships remained significant after adjusting for athletic status (p = 0.006 and p = 0.019, respectively). Circulating DHEA was positively associated with MU firing rate in these older men. Higher testosterone levels were associated with reduced MUP complexity, indicating reduced electrophysiological temporal dispersion, which is related to decreased differences in conduction times along axonal branches and/or MU fibres. Although evident in males only, this work highlights the potential of hormone administration as a therapeutic interventional strategy specifically targeting human motor units in older age.

In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a novel, to the best of knowledge, filter-free photonics-assisted microwave frequency translator with a tunable phase shift and amplitude. The pivotal component of the proposed scheme is an integrated dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK) modulator, which is applied to generate a polarization orthogonal carrier-suppressed single sideband modulation signal and frequency shifted optical carrier signal. The polarization-multiplexed optical signal outputs from the DP-QPSK modulator is then sent to a photodetector (PD) via a polarization controller (PC) and a polarizer to implement photoelectric conversion. The electrical signal output from the PD is the desired frequency translated microwave signal, and the amount of frequency shift is determined by the frequency of the sawtooth wave applied to the DP-QPSK modulator. In addition, since the PC can be used to adjust the polarization angle and introduce a phase difference between the two orthogonally polarized optical signals, the phase shift and amplitude of the obtained translated signal can also be easily tuned. A theoretical analysis and simulation experiment are carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme. The simulation results show that the novel scheme can realize frequency translation with a 360° continuously tunable phase shift and adjustable amplitude for both a single-tone signal and linearly frequency modulated signal with a 50 MHz bandwidth. The spurious suppression ratios of the single-tone signal and LFM signal after frequency translation are larger than 48 and 30 dB, respectively.

The process of phloem unloading and post-unloading transport of photoassimilate is critical to crop output. Xanthoceras sorbifolia is a woody oil species with great biomass energy prospects in China; however, underproduction of seeds seriously restricts its development. Here, our cytological studies by ultrastructural observation revealed that the sieve element-companion cell complex in carpellary bundle was symplasmically interconnected with surrounding parenchyma cells at the early and late fruit developmental stages, whereas it was symplasmically isolated at middle stage. Consistently, real-time imaging showed that fluorescent tracer 6(5)carboxyfluorescein was confined to phloem strands at middle stage but released into surrounding parenchymal cells at early and late stages. Enzymatic assay showed that sucrose synthase act as the key enzyme catalyzing the progress of Suc degradation post-unloading pathway whether in pericarp or in seed, while vacuolar acid invertase and neutral invertase play compensation roles in sucrose decomposition. Sugar transporter XsSWEET10 had a high expression profile in fruit, especially at middle stage. XsSWEET10 is a plasma membrane-localized protein and heterologous expression in SUC2-deficient yeast strain SUSY7/ura3 confirmed its ability to uptake sucrose. These findings approved the transition from symplasmic to apoplasmic phloem unloading in Xanthoceras sorbifolia fruit and XsSWEET10 as a key candidate in sugar transport.

OBJECTIVES: This study explored and analyzed the healing effect of Qinglong tail-wagging acupuncture method in therapy of knee osteoarthritis and its influence on inflammatory factors. METHODS: 93 elderly patients with acute onset of knee osteoarthritis that hospitalized from March 2017 to June 2019 were admitted and randomly separated into observation group (n=48) and control group (n=45) in line with the method of random data form. The control group was given conventional electro-acupuncture, and the observation group was treated with the qinglong tail-waving acupuncture method. The clinical efficacy, pre- and post-VAS score, Lequesne and WOMAC indexes, and changes in serum inflammatory factor levels pre-and-post treatment were compared between the two sets of subjects. RESULTS: The overall response rate of clinical treatment in observation group was remarkably higher than that of the control group (P < 0.05). Besides, the VAS, Lequesne as well as WOMAC scores of two groups after treatment were significantly reduced than those in pre-treatment (P < 0.05), and the indexes in observation group were remarkably lower than those in control group (P < 0.05). In addition, the serum IL-6, NO and TNF-α concentration of the two sets of subjects in post-treatment reduced significantly than that in pre-treatment (P < 0.05), and the serum IL-6, NO and TNF-α concentration in observation group were remarkably decreased than those in control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The acupuncture method of Qinglong tail-wagging has good healing effect on remedy of elderly knee osteoarthritis. The curative method is able to improve the patients' function of knee joint and reduce the concentration of serum inflammatory factor in patients with knew osteoarthritis.

Radiomics has potential advantages in the noninvasive histopathological and molecular diagnosis of gliomas. We aimed to develop a novel image signature (IS)-based radiomics model to achieve multilayered preoperative diagnosis and prognostic stratification of gliomas. Herein, we established three separate case cohorts, consisting of 655 glioma patients, and carried out a retrospective study. Image and clinical data of three cohorts were used for training (N = 188), cross-validation (N = 411), and independent testing (N = 56) of the IS model. All tumors were segmented from magnetic resonance (MR) images by the 3D U-net, followed by extraction of high-throughput network features, which were referred to as IS. IS was then used to perform noninvasive histopathological diagnosis and molecular subtyping. Moreover, a new IS-based clustering method was applied for prognostic stratification in IDH-wild-type lower-grade glioma (IDHwt LGG) and triple-negative glioblastoma (1p19q retain/IDH wild-type/TERTp-wild-type GBM). The average accuracies of histological diagnosis and molecular subtyping were 89.8 and 86.1% in the cross-validation cohort, while these numbers reached 83.9 and 80.4% in the independent testing cohort. IS-based clustering method was demonstrated to successfully divide IDHwt LGG into two subgroups with distinct median overall survival time (48.63 vs 38.27 months respectively, P = 0.023), and two subgroups in triple-negative GBM with different median OS time (36.8 vs 18.2 months respectively, P = 0.013). Our findings demonstrate that our novel IS-based radiomics model is an effective tool to achieve noninvasive histo-molecular pathological diagnosis and prognostic stratification of gliomas. This IS model shows potential for future routine use in clinical practice.

Low temperature derived carbon electrodes are employed to fabricate low cost hole transport layer free perovskite solar cells, in which perovskite films annealed in glovebox and ambient air are used as the absorbers, respectively. Results suggest that the air annealed sample has bigger crystal grains and higher crystallinity, and the existence of a small amount of lead iodide which passivates grain boundaries contributes to a lower trap density. As a result, a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 13.07% was obtained on the air annealed device, which is higher than those of devices annealed in glovebox (11.25%). Furthermore, the stability of unencapsulated devices stored in wet (with humidity around 90% ± 5%) air atmosphere are investigated and the results prove that our devices exhibit good stability. In addition to rigid devices, flexible perovskite solar cells are also fabricated using the same procedure. The highest PCE of 11.53% is demonstrated on the champion flexible device, and 69% of its initial PCE can be maintained even after 2000 bending cycles with a bending radius of 2 mm. Our work provides a promising and simple rout for low-cost, air-stable, high-efficiency carbon perovskite solar cells for both large area production and flexible electronic devices industry.

One of the most notable effects of ageing is an accelerated decline of skeletal muscle mass and function, resulting in various undesirable outcomes such as falls, frailty, and all-cause mortality. The loss of muscle mass directly leads to functional deficits and can be explained by the combined effects of individual fibre atrophy and fibre loss. The gradual degradation of fibre atrophy is attributed to impaired muscle protein homeostasis, while muscle fibre loss is a result of denervation and motor unit (MU) remodelling. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES), a substitute for voluntary contractions, has been applied to reduce muscle mass and functional declines. However, the measurement of the effectiveness of NMES in terms of its mechanism of action on the peripheral motor nervous system and neuromuscular junction, and multiple molecular adaptations at the single fibre level is not well described. NMES mediates neuroplasticity and upregulates a number of neurotropic factors, manifested by increased axonal sprouting and newly formed neuromuscular junctions. Repeated involuntary contractions increase the activity levels of oxidative enzymes, increase fibre capillarisation and can influence fibre type conversion. Additionally, following NMES muscle protein synthesis is increased as well as functional capacity. This review will detail the neural, molecular, metabolic and functional adaptations to NMES in human and animal studies.

The photoinduced phase segregation (PIPS) of mixed-halide perovskites (MHPs), due to halogen migration, has reaped considerable attention for its retroaction on film photostability and photovoltaic output. Nevertheless, the original mechanism is still unclear. Herein, taking the representative CsPbIBr2 material as an example, a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) technique was adopted to track the PIPS and dark recovery procedures. Besides the aggregation of iodide-rich (I-rich) domains at grain boundaries (GBs), some sporadic iodide "islands" with a swifter light response also appear throughout the polycrystalline films. It illustrates again that GBs are not essential for iodide aggregation. Furthermore, the iodide "islands" have substantial influence on a device's open-circuit voltage (Voc), resulting in an obvious plunge in the first tens of seconds. Results reveal the internal reason for the failure to reach the larger Voc outputs expected from wide-bandgap perovskites. Importantly, this finding can help promote the exploration of an efficient means to stabilize MHPs.
