RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Persons on the autism spectrum exhibit poorer body awareness than neurotypical persons. Since movement quality may be regarded as an expression of body awareness, assessment of movement quality is important. Sound assessments of measurement properties are essential if reliable decisions about body awareness interventions for persons on the autism spectrum are to be made, but there is insufficient research. OBJECTIVE: To assess measurement properties of the Body Awareness Scale Movement Quality (BAS MQ) in an autism and a neurotypical reference group. METHODS: Persons on the autism spectrum (n=108) and neurotypical references (n=32) were included. All were assessed with BAS MQ. Data were analyzed according to the Rasch model. RESULTS: BAS MQ was found to have acceptable unidimensionality, supported by the fit statistics. The hierarchical ordering showed that coordination ability was the most difficult, followed by stability and relating. Response category functioning worked as intended for 19 out of 23 items. There were few difficult items, which decreased targeting. Reliability measures were good. BAS MQ discriminated between the autism and the reference groups, with the autism group exhibiting poorer movement quality, reflecting clinical observations and previous research. CONCLUSIONS: BAS MQ was found to have acceptable measurement properties, though suffering from problems with targeting item difficulty to person ability for persons on the autism spectrum. The BAS MQ may, along with experienced movement quality, contribute to clinically relevant information of persons on the autism spectrum, although we encourage refinements and further analyses to improve its measurement properties.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Limitations in everyday movements, physical activities are/or pain are the main reasons for seeking help from a physiotherapist. The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the Body Awareness Scale Movement Quality (BAS MQ) focusing on factor structure, validity and reliability and to explore whether BAS MQ could discriminate between healthy individuals and patients. BAS MQ assesses both limitations and resources concerning functional ability and quality of movements. METHODS: The total sample in the study (n = 172) consisted of individuals with hip osteoarthritis (OA) (n = 132), individuals with psychiatric disorders (n = 33) and healthy individuals (n = 7). A factor analysis of the BAS MQ was performed for the total group. Inter-rater reliability was tested in a group of individuals with hip OA (n = 24). Concurrent validity was tested in a group of individuals with hip OA (n = 89). The Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36), the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) and the Hip Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (HOOS) were chosen in the validation process. RESULTS: The factor analysis revealed three factors that together explained 60.8% of the total variance of BAS MQ. The inter-rater reliability was considered good or very good with a kappa value of 0.61. Significant correlations between BAS MQ and SF-36, HOOS and 6MWT in the subjects with hip OA confirmed the validity. The BAS MQ was able to discriminate between healthy individuals and individuals with physical and psychiatric limitations. CONCLUSION: Results of the study revealed that BAS MQ has a satisfactory factor structure. The inter-rater reliability and validity were acceptable in a group of individuals with hip OA. BAS MQ could be a useful assessment tool for physiotherapists when evaluating the quality of everyday movements in different patient groups. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The interaction between patient and physiotherapist (PT) is central in physiotherapeutic treatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate expert physiotherapists' perception of important factors influencing the quality of the interaction in physiotherapeutic treatment. METHOD: Ten experienced PTs working in primary healthcare were interviewed twice, triangulating a sort of important events, an exemplar and a key informant interview. The data were transcribed, coded and analysed for main themes and categories according to the qualitative technique described by Shepard et al. (1993) and Merriam (1988). RESULTS: Important factors in interaction could be divided into the 'Prerequisites dimension' and the 'Interaction dimension'. In the former, the most dominant theme was 'Internal prerequisites of the PT'. The most-cited category in this theme was 'Practical professional skills and patient experience'. In the latter, the themes 'Establishing contact', 'Ways of contact', 'Frames' and the 'Therapeutic process' emerged. Here, the most-cited categories were 'Establishing contact and confidence', having a 'Therapeutic role', 'Being sensitive and intuitive', 'Encountering', 'Listening' and 'Identification of patient resources'. These factors were seen as essential for promoting a positive patient outcome. Interaction skills were reinforced by reflection on patients' experiences. CONCLUSIONS: Interaction skills of the expert PT were thought to enhance the resources of the patient and lead to a positive patient outcome. Within professional development more emphasis ought to be put on reinforcing the reflective process of the PT, for instance by the use of supervision by an experienced colleague.

RESUMEN

Quality of movement assessment using the Body Awareness Scale-Health (BAS-H) was validated against the following self-rating tests: Nottingham Health Profile (NHP); Arthritis Self-Efficacy Scale (ASES); Psychological General Well-Being (PGWB); Sense of Coherence (SoC); Sivic Psychosomatism test (SPS); Symptom Check List 90-R (SCL 90-R); and Visual Analogue Scale for pain intensity (VAS-pain). In total, 75 persons were included, divided into three groups: psychiatric outpatients (n = 25), chronic pain patients (n = 25) and healthy controls (n = 25). The highest significant correlations were obtained between the BAS-H total index and the sub-indices of grounding/stability to the centre line, centering/breathing and flow on the one hand, and the NHP, the ASES, and the PGWB on the other, with r ranging from 0.36 to 0.73. Multiple regression analysis revealed the NHP to explain 50% and ASES a further 5% of the variance in the BAS-H total index. Significant differences for both the BAS-H total index and the sub-indices were obtained between the two patient groups and the healthy controls. It is concluded that the construct validity of the BAS-H was found to be in accordance with theoretical expectations.
