RESUMEN

The photolytic or oxidative liberation of a cyclic (amino)(alkyl)carbene (CAAC)-stabilized arylborylene in the presence of organoazides yielded borylene-organoazide complexes (4a,b) has been achieved in a manner akin to the first step of the Staudinger reaction. Similarly, a CAAC-stabilized aminoborylene also afforded borylene-organoazide complexes (6a-c), which further undergo rearrangement to produce aminoborane triazene species (7a,b).

RESUMEN

The addition of chlorotrimethylsilane to a boron-mediated, transition-metal-free N2 activation reaction leads to the isolation of multiple potassium boryl(silyl)hydrazido species, likely trapping products of a terminal dinitrogen complex of boron. One of these silylated N2 species can be protonated or methylated, providing access to mono- to tetrafunctionalized hydrazines in two steps from N2 and in the absence of transition metals.

RESUMEN

The 2,3,4,5,6-pentaphenyl-1,2-azaborinin-1-yl (PPAB) potassium complex 1 undergoes facile salt metathesis with 9,10-dibromo-9,10-dihydroboraanthracene (DBABr2), 5-bromodibenzo[b,d]borole (DBBBr), 1-chlorotetraphenylborole (TPBCl) and dibromo(phenyl)borane (BBr2Ph) to yield the corresponding N-borylated azaborinines N-DBABr-PPAB (2, which hydrolyses and dimerises to the oxo-bridged N,N'-O(DBA)2-(PPAB)2, 3), N,N'-DBA-(PPAB)2 (4), N-DBB-PPAB (5), N-PPB-PPAB (7) and N-BBrPh-PPBA (9). Stepwise reduction of 4 yields the corresponding stable radical anion 4˙- and dianion 42-. One-electron reduction of 5 with KC8 yields the purple radical anion 5˙-, which forms a highly insoluble coordination polymer. 5˙- undergoes very slow radical intramolecular ortho-C-H activation at the C4-phenyl substituent of the PPAB moiety, yielding a BN-analogue of the 5,5'-spiro-bi[dibenzoborole] anion, [6]K. Compound 7 cannot be isolated and undergoes spontaneous and diastereoselective 2,5-anti-addition of the ortho-C-H bond of the PPAB C4-phenyl substituent to yield a novel BNB-analogue of the triply fused dihydrocyclopenta[l]phenanthrene cation, compound 8. Finally the one-electron reduction of 9 results in the ortho-C-H activation of the PPAB C4-phenyl substituent at an in situ-generated dicoordinate boryl anion (10), resulting in the formation of a BNB-analogue of 9H-fluorene, the borate 11-. DFT calculations provide a rationale for the diverse C-H activations observed in these reactions.

RESUMEN

Carbene-stabilized symmetrical and unsymmetrical dicationic tetraboranes, featuring an electron-precise tetraborane chain, were synthesized and fully characterized. Reactions of these tetraboranes with reductants/bases give rise to different outcomes according to the conditions employed, including: 1) reduction and rearrangement of the tetraborane chain to give a zwitterionic alkylidene borate-borenium species; 2) cleavage of the tetraborane chain to afford a 1,3-azaborinine; and 3) reduction of the supporting ligands to provide a diamino dipotassium salt. The zwitterionic alkylidene borate-borenium species can be viewed as an analogue of the base-stabilized diborenes. NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations reveal a highly polarized B-B bond in the zwitterionic alkylidene borate-borenium, in which the formal oxidation states of the boron atoms can be considered as -1 and +2. These results suggest the considerable potential of tetraboranes as synthons for low-valent boron species.

RESUMEN

The Fischer carbene synthesis, involving the conversion of a transition metal (TM)-bound CO ligand to a carbene ligand of the form [=C(OR')R] (R, R' = organyl groups), is one of the seminal reactions in the history of organometallic chemistry. Carbonyl complexes of p-block elements, of the form [E(CO)n] (E = main-group fragment), are much less abundant than their TM cousins; this scarcity and the general instability of low-valent p-block species means that replicating the historical reactions of TM carbonyls is often very difficult. Here we present a step-for-step replica of the Fischer carbene synthesis at a borylene carbonyl involving nucleophilic attack at the carbonyl carbon followed by electrophilic quenching at the resultant acylate oxygen atom. These reactions provide borylene acylates and alkoxy-/silyloxy-substituted alkylideneboranes, main-group analogues of the archetypal transition metal acylate and Fischer carbene families, respectively. When either the incoming electrophile or the boron center has a modest steric profile, the electrophile instead attacks at the boron atom, leading to carbene-stabilized acylboranes - boron analogues of the well-known transition metal acyl complexes. These results constitute faithful main-group replicas of a number of historical organometallic processes and pave the way to further advances in the field of main-group metallomimetics.

RESUMEN

Singly and doubly cyclic alkyl(amino)iminate (CAAI)-substituted boranes and diboranes(4) were synthesised by halosilane elimination between a silylimine and halo(di)borane precursors. 11B NMR-spectroscopic studies show that the CAAI ligand is a much stronger electron donor than amino ligands. X-ray crystallographic analyses reveal that the degree of B-NCAAI double bonding increases with the electron-withdrawing capacity of the other substituents at boron. The C-N-B bond angle displays a great flexibility, ranging from 131° to near-linear 176°, the narrowest angles being observed for NMe2-substituted derivatives and the widest angles for highly sterically demanding substituents. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the electronic structures of the anionic CAAI ligand compared to unsaturated and saturated N-heterocyclic iminate (NHI) ligands show that the former is the best σ donor of the three but less π-donating than the unsaturated NHI. Nevertheless, the linear (CAAI)BH2 complex displays somewhat stronger C-N and N-B π bonding than the corresponding ((S)NHI)BH2 complexes.

RESUMEN

The reduction of a carbene-coordinated, sterically encumbered terphenyl-substituted aluminium diiodide, (LRAlI2 ), yielded a "masked" dialumene (LRAl=AlRL), self-stabilised through [2+2] cycloaddition with a peripheral aromatic group. During the course of the reaction, a carbene-stabilised arylalumylene (LRAl:) was generated in situ, which was trapped using an alkyne, generating an aluminacyclopropene or a C-H activated product thereof, depending on the steric bulk of the alkyne. The masked dialumene also underwent intramolecular cycloreversion and dissociation into alumylene fragments, which reacted with various organic azides to yield monomeric or dimeric iminoalanes depending on the sterics of the azide substituent. The thermodynamics of monomeric and dimeric iminoalane formation were probed by theoretical calculations.

RESUMEN

Heterocycles containing group 13 and 15 elements such as borazines are an integral part of organic, biomedical and materials chemistry. Surprisingly, heterocycles containing P and Al are rare. We have now utilized phosphaalumenes in reactions with alkynes, alkenes and conjugated double bond systems. With sterically demanding alkynes 1,2-phosphaalumetes were afforded, whereas the reaction with HCCH or HCCSiMe3 gave 1,4-phosphaaluminabarrelenes. Using styrene saturated 1,2-phosphaalumates were formed, which reacted further with additional styrene to give different regio-isomers of 1,4-aluminaphosphorinanes. Using ethylene, a 1,4-aluminaphosphorinane is obtained, while with 1,3-butadiene a bicyclic system containing an aluminacyclopentane and a phosphirane unit was synthesized. The experimental work is supported by theoretical studies to shed light on the mechanism governing the formation of these heterocycles.

RESUMEN

We report the reduction of bulky ferrocenyl-based NHC-stabilised aluminium(iii) diiodide [Fc*(NHC)AlI2] (Fc* = 2,5-bis(3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)-1-ferrocenyl) in different hydrocarbon solvents (hexane, benzene, toluene, and p-xylene), which results in different outcomes. Reduction in hexane with an equivalent amount of KC8 generates the diiododialane [(Fc*(NHC)AlI)2], whereas complete reduction in hexane leads to an unusual C-H activation at an N-Me group of one NHC unit. In contrast, reaction in aromatic solvents result in hitherto unknown Birch-type reductions of the corresponding solvent molecules by transient aluminium radicals of the type [LAlR2]˙, which is ultimately bound to two aluminium centers.

RESUMEN

While a stable base-free arylalumylene bearing a sterically encumbered terphenyl substituent has been reported previously, we herein report that our attempts to form a base-stabilised arylalumylene bearing a relatively small terphenyl substituent and an N-heterocyclic carbene base led instead to a "masked" dialumene (LRAl[double bond, length as m-dash]AlRL), self-stabilised by one peripheral aromatic group. Intriguingly, examining the behavior of this species or its transient dialumene formed from reducing the diiodoarylalane in aromatic solvents under different conditions reveals that they both decouple into the desired base-stabilised arylalumylene. This transient acyclic, dicoordinate alumylene is highly reactive, deconstructing benzene and toluene to furnish dialuminium derivatives of pentalene, providing the first example of a neutral AlI compound able to deconstruct these less reactive arenes. Computational insights were also gained on the dialumene dissociation and on the mechanism of arene deconstruction by alumylene.

RESUMEN

Doubly N-heterocyclic-carbene-stabilized diborenes undergo facile reactions with CO2, initially providing dibora-ß-lactones. These lactones convert over time to their 2,4-diboraoxetan-3-one isomers through a presumed dissociative pathway and hypovalent boron species borylene carbonyls (LHB═C═O) and base-stabilized oxoboranes (LHB═O). Repeating these reactions with doubly cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene-stabilized diborenes allowed the isolation of a borylene carbonyl intermediate, whereas a base-stabilized oxoborane could be inferred by the isolation of a boroxine from the reaction mixture. These results, supported by calculations, confirm the presumed mechanism of the diboralactone-to-diboraoxetanone isomerization while also establishing a surprising level of stability for three unknown or very rare hypovalent boron species: base-stabilized derivatives of the parent borylene carbonyl (LHB═C═O) and parent oxoborane (LHB═O) as well as base-free oxoboranes (RB≡O).

RESUMEN

A one-pot synthesis of a CAAC-stabilized, unsymmetrical, cyclic diborene was achieved via consecutive two-electron reduction steps from an adduct of CAAC and B2 Br4 (SMe2 )2 . Theoretical studies revealed that this diborene has a considerably smaller HOMO-LUMO gap than those of reported NHC- and phosphine-supported diborenes. Complexation of the diborene with [AuCl(PCy3 )] afforded two diborene-AuI π complexes, while reaction with DurBH2 , P4 and a terminal acetylene led to the cleavage of B-H, P-P, and C-C π bonds, respectively. Thermal rearrangement of the diborene gave an electron-rich cyclic alkylideneborane, which readily coordinated to AgI via its B=C double bond.

RESUMEN

The ruthenium-catalyzed cross-metathesis of alkenes and alkynes, which splits the alkene C═C double bond and couples one-half to each carbon of the alkyne C≡C triple bond, is one of the most efficient tools for the synthesis of 1,3-dienes, with wide-ranging applications, including pharmaceutical and polymer chemistry. In contrast, inorganic main-group metathesis reactions are restricted to a handful of examples of heavier p-block multiple bonds (P═P, Ge═Ge, and E≡E, E = Ge, Sn, Pb). We now report the first examples of thermally induced, transition-metal-free cross-metathesis between an organic alkyne and inorganic cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene (CAAC)-stabilized B═B double bonds, which yield fully planar, π-delocalized 1,8-diaza-3,6-diboraoctatetraenes. Density functional theory studies show that these compounds have an open-shell singlet biradical ground state with a thermally accessible closed-shell state. In-depth computational mechanistic analyses show that they are formed via a biradical cycloaddition-cycloreversion mechanism. Finally, unlike their organic counterparts, these B,N-analogues of octatetraene can undergo two-electron chemical reduction to form diamagnetic dianions.

RESUMEN

A 1,8-naphthyridine diphosphine (NDP) reacts with boron-containing Lewis acids to generate complexes featuring a number of different naphthyridine bonding modes. When exposed to diborane B2 Br4 , NDP underwent self-deprotonation to afford [NDP-B2 Br3 ]Br, an unsymmetrical diborane comprised of four fused rings. The reaction of two equivalents of monoborane BBr3 and NDP in a non-polar solvent provided the simple phosphine-borane adduct [NDP(BBr3 )2 ], which then underwent intramolecular halide abstraction to furnish the salt [NDP-BBr2 ][BBr4 ], featuring a different coordination mode from that of [NDP-B2 Br3 ]Br. Direct deprotonation of NDP by KHMDS or PhCH2 K generates mono- and dipotassium reagents, respectively. The monopotassium reagent reacts with one or half an equivalent of B2 (NMe2 )2 Cl2 to afford NDP-based diboranes with three or four amino substituents.

RESUMEN

Using the AlI precursor Cp3t Al in conjunction with triphosphiranes (PAr)3 (Ar=Mes, Dip, Tip) we have succeeded in preparing Lewis base-free cyclic diphosphadialanes with both the Al and P atoms bearing three substituents. Using the sterically more demanding Dip and Tip substituents the first 1,2-diphospha-3,4-dialuminacyclobutanes were obtained, whereas with Mes substituents [Cp3t Al(µ-PMes)]2 is formed. This divergent reactivity was corroborated by DFT studies, which indicated the thermodynamic preference for the 1,2-diphospha-3,4-dialuminacyclobutane form for sterically more demanding groups on phosphorus. Using Cp*Al we could extend this concept to the corresponding cyclic diarsadialanes [Cp*Al(µ-AsAr)]2 (Ar=Dip, Tip) and additionally add the phosphorus variants [Cp*Al(µ-PAr)]2 (P=Mes, Dip, Tip). The reactivity of one variant [Cp3t Al(µ-PPh)]2 towards NHCs was tested and resulted in double NHC-stabilised [Cp3t (IiPr2 )Al(µ-PPh)]2 .

RESUMEN

The reactions of terminal acetylenes with doubly Lewis base-stabilised diborenes resulted in different outcomes depending on the nature of the ligands at boron and the conformation of the diborene (cyclic versus acyclic). N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-stabilised diborenes tended to undergo anti-selective hydroalkynylation at room temperature, whereas [2 + 2] cycloaddition was observed at higher temperatures, invariably followed by a C-N bond activation at one NHC ligand, leading to the ring-expansion of the initially formed BCBC ring and formation of novel boron-containing heterocycles. For phosphine-stabilised diborenes only [2 + 2] cycloaddition was observed, followed by a rearrangement of the resulting 1,2-dihydro-1,2-diborete to the corresponding 1,3-isomer, which amounts to complete scission of both the B[double bond, length as m-dash]B double and C[triple bond, length as m-dash]C triple bonds of the reactants. The elusive 1,2-isomer was finally trapped by using a cyclic phosphine-stabilised diborene, which prevented rearrangement to the 1,3-isomer. Extensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations provide a rationale for the selectivity observed.

RESUMEN

Doubly base-stabilised cyano- and isothiocyanatoborylenes of the form LL'BY (L = CAAC = cyclic alkyl(amino)carbene; L' = NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene; Y = CN, NCS) coordinate to group 6 carbonyl complexes via the terminal donor of the pseudohalide substituent and undergo facile and fully reversible one-electron oxidation to the corresponding boryl radical cations [LL'BY]˙+. Furthermore, calculations show that the borylenes have very similar proton affinities, both to each other and to NHC superbases. However, while the protonation of LL'B(CN) with PhSH yielding [LL'BH(CN)+][PhS-] is fully reversible, that of LL'B(NCS) is rendered irreversible by a subsequent B-to-CCAAC hydrogen shift and nucleophilic attack of PhS- at boron.

RESUMEN

The one-electron reduction of (CAACMe)BCl3 (CAACMe = 1-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-3,3,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidin-2-ylidene) yields the dichloroboryl radical [(CAACMe)BCl2]˙. Furthermore, the twofold reduction of (CAACMe)BCl3 in the presence of a range of Lewis bases (L = CAACMe, N-heterocyclic carbene, phosphine) yields a series of doubly base-supported (CAACMe)LBCl chloroborylenes, all of which were structurally characterised. NMR and UV-vis spectroscopic and electrochemical data for (CAACMe)LBCl show that the boron centre becomes more electron-rich and the HOMO-LUMO gap widens as L becomes less π-accepting. A [(CAACMe)BCl2]- boryl anion coordination polymer was isolated as a potential intermediate in these reductions. In most cases the reduction of the chloroborylenes resulted in the formation of the corresponding hydroborylenes or derivatives thereof, as well as ligand C-H activation products.
