RESUMEN

The platform consists of three modules, which are pre-configured bioinformatic pipelines, cloud toolsets, and online omics' courses. The pre-configured bioinformatic pipelines not only combine analytic tools for metagenomics, genomes, transcriptome, proteomics and metabolomics, but also provide users with powerful and convenient interactive analysis reports, which allow them to analyze and mine data independently. As a useful supplement to the bioinformatics pipelines, a wide range of cloud toolsets can further meet the needs of users for daily biological data processing, statistics, and visualization. The rich online courses of multi-omics also provide a state-of-art platform to researchers in interactive communication and knowledge sharing.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Gut microbiota alterations in chronic pancreatitis (CP) are seldomly described systematically. It is unknown whether pancreatic exocrine insufficiency (PEI) and different etiologies in patients with CP are associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis. METHODS: The fecal microbiota of 69 healthy controls (HCs) and 71 patients with CP were compared to investigate gut microbiome alterations in CP and the relationship among gut microbiome dysbiosis, PEI and different etiologies. Fecal microbiomes were analyzed through 16S ribosomal RNA gene profiling, based on next-generation sequencing. Pancreatic exocrine function was evaluated by determining fecal elastase 1 activity. RESULTS: Patients with CP showed gut microbiota dysbiosis with decreased diversity and richness, and taxa-composition changes. On the phylum level, the gut microbiome of the CP group showed lower Firmicutes and Actinobacteria abundances than the HC group and higher Proteobacteria abundances. The abundances of Escherichia-Shigella and other genera were high in gut microbiomes in the CP group, whereas that of Faecalibacterium was low. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways (lipopolysaccharide biosynthesis and bacterial invasion of epithelial cells) were predicted to be enriched in the CP group. Among the top 5 phyla and 8 genera (in terms of abundance), only Fusobacteria and Eubacterium rectale group showed significant differences between CP patients, with or without PEI. Correlation analysis showed that Bifidobacterium and Lachnoclostridium correlated positively with fecal elastase 1 (r = 0.2616 and 0.2486, respectively, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The current findings indicate that patients with CP have gut microbiota dysbiosis that is partly affected by pancreatic exocrine function.

Blueberry (Vaccinium, family Ericaceae) is well known for its strong antioxidant properties and abundant active ingredients including anthocyanins, flavonols, and proanthocyanidins. In this study, variations in anthocyanin and phenolic compounds content in Bluecrop and Northblue blueberry cultivar fruits were studied, and comparative transcriptome analysis was performed to analyze differences in the molecular mechanisms of anthocyanin biosynthesis. A total of 13 799 unique genes were identified by differential expression analysis, and further subjected to GO classification and pathway enrichment. Nine differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including CHI, DFR, F3'H, FLS, CHS, OMT, UGT, ANS and F3H, were selected to validate the differential expression data using quantitative real-time PCR. The obtained qRT-PCR expression results were consistent with the RNA-Seq results. The expression levels of 9 candidate genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis and metabolism were concurrent with the anthocyanin content. The developmental stage appeared to affect the expression of genes related to flavonoid biosynthesis to a greater extent than the tissue or cultivar type. This study provides an abundant data resource that will further our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of anthocyanin biosynthesis in blueberries.

Over the last decade, considerable experimental evidence has supported the view that grape wine and South China rice wine are rich in diverse nutrients and have powerful antioxidant activity. However, little research has been carried out for North China rice wine, of which Ji Mo Lao Jiu (JMLJ) is the outstanding representative. In this study, the functional components and antioxidant activity of JMLJ were investigated. Twenty-eight free amino acids were found in JMLJ, much more than that previously reported in other Chinese rice wines (16-21). Functional oligosaccharides (5290.222 mg/L), total phenols (722.431 ± 10.970 mg/L), and mineral elements (9) were rich in JMLJ. When compared with synthetic antioxidants, such as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), JMLJ showed effective 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and reducing capacity. The results of this study lay the foundation for promoting the utilization of JMLJ and the development of North China rice wine in the food industry.
