RESUMEN

This study examines the gender-specific and enduring impacts of parental health shocks on adult children's employment in China, where both formal care and health insurance are limited. Using an event-study approach, we establish a causal link between parental health shocks and a notable decline in female employment, which persists for at least six years following the shock. Male employment, however, exhibits minimal change on average, although this conceals an increase among poor families, indicating a channel beyond heightened informal care. Our findings underscore the consequences of "growing old before getting rich" for developing countries.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical correlative factors and outcomes of treatment of bleb-associated endophthalmitis (BAE) following glaucoma filtration surgery in a Chinese population from the year 2012 to 2022, and to compare them with the clinical course during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic period. METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of consecutive cases of BAE treated at the Eye & ENT Hospital of Fudan University, Shanghai, China, between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2022. The clinical presentation, treatment modality, microbiological data, clinical course, and outcomes of visual acuity (VA) and intraocular pressure (IOP) in all BAE cases were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 28 eyes with BAE were examined, predominantly in male patients (71.4%, p = 0.023). Most patients underwent trabeculectomy (89.3%, p ≤ 0.001), while a smaller proportion underwent Ex-PRESS implantation (10.7%). Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) was the most common type of glaucoma (39.3%, p ≤ 0.001). Most patients (96.4%) presented with poor visual acuity, worse than 20/400, and IOP ranged from 3-60 mmHg. Treatment, including initial tap-and-inject procedure of antibiotics (Ceftazidime and Norvancomycin) or initial pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), was initiated 5.0 ± 7.1 days after BAE onset. Streptococcus was the most common causative organism (53.6% of cases, p ≤ 0.001). The visual acuity significantly improved from 2.58 ± 0.27 to 2.14 ± 0.85 (reported in logMAR) after treatment (p ≤ 0.001), and most patients maintained normal tension during follow-up. Poisson regression model analysis showed the annual incidence of BAE during the COVID-19 pandemic period was significantly twice greater than that of previous years. CONCLUSIONS: BAE may cause irreversible visual impairment. POAG filtering surgery with male sex and the COVID-19 pandemic period might be potentially relevant factors for BAE. Culture positivity was closely related to BAE prognosis, with Streptococcus species being the leading pathogenic organisms. Online outpatient services, early diagnosis, and timely treatment may rescue vision and maintain IOP control in the presence of BAE.

RESUMEN

Background: Azvudine and nirmatrelvir/ritonavir are approved to treat mild-to-moderate coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in adults with a high risk for progression to severe infection. We sought to compare the antiviral effectiveness and clinical outcomes of elderly severe patients with COVID-19 receiving these two antiviral agents. Methods: In this observational study, we identified 249 elderly patients with severe COVID-19 infection who were admitted to the Second Medical Center of the People's Liberation Army General Hospital from December 2022 to January 2023, including 128 azvudine recipients, 66 nirmatrelvir/ritonavir recipients and 55 patients not received antiviral treatments. We compared the cycle threshold (Ct) value dynamic change of all three groups. The primary outcome was a composite outcome of disease progression, including all-cause death, intensive care unit admission, and initiation of invasive mechanical ventilation. The outcomes of all enrolled patients were followed up from the electronic medical record system. Kaplan-Meier and Cox risk proportional regression analyses were used to compare the clinical outcomes of all three groups. To more directly compare the effectiveness of the two antiviral drugs, we performed propensity-score matching between the two antiviral groups and compared antiviral efficacy and clinical outcomes in the matched population. Findings: Among 249 patients (mean age, 91.41 years), 77 patients died during the follow-up period. When compared to patients who did not receive any antivirals, neither nirmatrelvir/ritonavir nor azvudine demonstrated a survival benefit. The Cox analysis of the all-cause death of the three groups showed that the risk of death was 0.730 (0.423-1.262) in the azvudine group 0.802 (0.435-1.480) and in the nirmatrelvir/ritonavir group compared with the non-antiviral group. After propensity score matching, we included 58 azvudine recipients and 58 nirmatrelvir/ritonavir recipients. The fitted curve of the Ct value after matching illustrated that the rate of viral decline in the early stage of nirmatrelvir/ritonavir treatment seems to surpass that of azvudine, but there was no statistical significance. Azvudine was seemly associated with a lower risk of composite outcomes (HR:1.676, 95% CI:0.805-3.488) and short-term all-cause death (HR: 1.291, 95%CI: 0.546-3.051). Interpretation: Patients who received azvudine have a similar antiviral effectiveness and survival curve trend compared to nirmatrelvir/ritonavir. In this limited series, antiviral treatment was not associated with a significant clinical benefit. This lack of clinical benefit might be attributed to potential bias. RESUMEN

AIM: To compare the three-dimensional choroidal vascularity index (CVI) and choroidal thickness between fellow eyes of acute primary angle-closure (F-APAC) and chronic primary angle-closure glaucoma (F-CPACG) and the eyes of normal controls. METHODS: This study included 37 patients with unilateral APAC, 37 with asymmetric CPACG without prior treatment, and 36 healthy participants. Using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT), the macular and peripapillary choroidal thickness and three-dimensional CVI were measured and compared globally and sectorally. Pearson's correlation analysis and multivariate regression models were used to evaluate choroidal thickness or CVI with related factors. RESULTS: The mean subfoveal CVIs were 0.35±0.10, 0.33±0.09, and 0.29±0.04, and the mean subfoveal choroidal thickness were 315.62±52.92, 306.22±59.29, and 262.69±45.55 µm in the F-APAC, F-CPACG, and normal groups, respectively. All macular sectors showed significantly higher CVIs and choroidal thickness in the F-APAC and F-CPACG eyes than in the normal eyes (P<0.05), while there were no significant differences between the F-APAC and F-CPACG eyes. In the peripapillary region, the mean overall CVIs were 0.21±0.08, 0.20±0.08, and 0.19±0.05, and the mean overall choroidal thickness were 180.45±54.18, 174.82±50.67, and 176.18±37.94 µm in the F-APAC, F-CPACG, and normal groups, respectively. There were no significant differences between any of the two groups in all peripapillary sectors. Younger age, shorter axial length, and the F-APAC or F-CPACG diagnosis were significantly associated with higher subfoveal CVI and thicker subfoveal choroidal thickness (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The fellow eyes of unilateral APAC or asymmetric CPACG have higher macular CVI and choroidal thickness than those of the normal controls. Neither CVI nor choroidal thickness can distinguish between eyes predisposed to APAC or CPACG. A thicker choroid with a higher vascular volume may play a role in the pathogenesis of primary angle-closure glaucoma.

RESUMEN

Purpose: To compare the morphological characteristics of Schlemm's canal (SC) in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and healthy controls, using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) with en face reconstruction. Methods: In this Prospective comparative study, we included 100 eyes from 50 patients diagnosed with POAG and 50 healthy controls. Three-dimensional cube and line scans of the temporal and nasal quadrants of the anterior segment of the limbus were acquired using SS-OCT. SC was identified using en face and cross-sectional images. The diameter and area of SC in cross-sectional images and the visible percentage and area of SC in en face images were measured using ImageJ. Results: SC was observed in 84% of en face images and 81% of cross-sectional images in eyes with POAG but in 92% of en face images and 86% of cross-sectional images in control eyes. Significant differences between the POAG and normal control eyes were found in the en face area (0.35 ± 0.14 mm2 vs. 0.56 ± 0.22 mm2 in the temporal quadrant and 0.36 ± 0.14 mm2 vs. 0.58 ± 0.23 mm2 in the nasal quadrant; both p < 0.001) and visible percentage of SC (85.71% vs. 94.91% and 87.10% vs. 95.52% in the temporal and nasal quadrant respectively, both p < 0.001) in en face images as well as the cross-sectional area (2790.9 ± 942.2 µm2 vs. 4138.6 ± 2027.8 µm2 in the temporal quadrant and 2805.7 ± 947.2 µm2 vs. 4224.0 ± 2002.2 µm2 in the nasal quadrant, both p < 0.001) and diameter of SC (123.1 ± 25.4 µm vs. 149.5 ± 34.7 µm in the temporal quadrant and 126.3 ± 28.9 µm vs. 155.3 ± 36.0 µm in the nasal quadrant, both p < 0.001) in cross-section images. In addition, the mean intraocular pressure (IOP) significantly correlated with the en face area, visible percentage of SC, and cross-sectional area in the temporal and nasal quadrants. Conclusion: SS-OCT can obtain high-quality en face images of SC without post-acquisition processing. Eyes with POAG had a decreased en face SC area compared with normal eyes. A correlation between SC area, visible percentage of en face images, and IOP was also observed.

RESUMEN

Quantum spins, also known as spin operators that preserve SU(2) symmetry, lack a specific orientation in space and are hypothesized to display unique interactions with superconductivity. However, spin-orbit coupling and crystal field typically cause a significant magnetic anisotropy in d/f shell spins on surfaces. Here, we fabricate atomically precise S = 1/2 magnetic nanographenes on Pb(111) through engineering sublattice imbalance in the graphene honeycomb lattice. Through tuning the magnetic exchange strength between the unpaired spin and Cooper pairs, a quantum phase transition from the singlet to the doublet state has been observed, consistent with the quantum spin models. From our calculations, the particle-hole asymmetry is induced by the Coulomb scattering potential and gives a transition point about kBTk ≈ 1.6Δ. Our work demonstrates that delocalized π electron magnetism hosts highly tunable magnetic bound states, which can be further developed to study the Majorana bound states and other rich quantum phases of low-dimensional quantum spins on superconductors.

RESUMEN

The field of two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetism has been proliferating over the past few years, with ongoing interests in basic science and potential applications in spintronic technology. However, a high-resolution spectroscopic study of the 2D ferromagnet is still lacking due to the small size and air sensitivity of the exfoliated nanoflakes. Here, we report a thickness-dependent ferromagnetism in epitaxially grown Cr2Te3 thin films and investigate the evolution of the underlying electronic structure by synergistic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy, and first-principle calculations. A conspicuous ferromagnetic transition from Stoner to Heisenberg-type is directly observed in the atomically thin limit, indicating that dimensionality is a powerful tuning knob to manipulate the novel properties of 2D magnetism. Monolayer Cr2Te3 retains robust ferromagnetism, but with a suppressed Curie temperature, due to the drastic drop in the density of states near the Fermi level. Our results establish atomically thin Cr2Te3 as an excellent platform to explore the dual nature of localized and itinerant ferromagnetism in 2D magnets.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This nationwide survey studied the level of palliative care (PC) access for Chinese patients with cancer among cancer care providers either in tertiary general hospitals or cancer hospitals in China. METHODS: Using a probability-proportionate-to-size method, we identified local tertiary general hospitals with oncology departments to match cancer hospitals at the same geographic area. A PC program leader or a designee at each hospital reported available PC services, including staffing, inpatient and outpatient services, education, and research, with most questions adapted from a previous national survey on PC. The primary outcome was availability of a PC service. RESULTS: Most responders reported that some type of PC service (possibly called "comprehensive cancer care," "pain and symptom management," or "supportive care") was available at their institution (84.3% of tertiary general hospitals, 82.8% of cancer hospitals). However, cancer hospitals were significantly more likely than tertiary general hospitals to have a PC department or specialist (34.1% vs. 15.5%, p < 0.001). The most popular services were pain consultation (> 92%), symptom management (> 77%), comprehensive care plans (~ 60%), obtaining advanced directives and do-not-resuscitate orders (~ 45%), referrals to hospice (> 32%), and psychiatric assessment (> 25%). Cancer hospitals were also more likely than tertiary general hospitals to report having inpatient beds for PC (46.3% vs. 30.5%; p = 0.010), outpatient PC clinics (28.0% vs. 16.8%; p = 0.029), educational programs (18.2% vs. 9.0%, p = 0.014), and research programs (17.2% vs. 9.3%, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Cancer hospitals are more likely to offer PC than are tertiary general hospitals in China. Our findings highlight opportunities to further increase the PC capacity in Chinese hospitals.

RESUMEN

Aqueous flow batteries are considered very suitable for large-scale energy storage due to their high safety, long cycle life, and independent design of power and capacity. Especially, zinc-iron flow batteries have significant advantages such as low price, non-toxicity, and stability compared with other aqueous flow batteries. Significant technological progress has been made in zinc-iron flow batteries in recent years. Numerous energy storage power stations have been built worldwide using zinc-iron flow battery technology. This review first introduces the developing history. Then, we summarize the critical problems and the recent development of zinc-iron flow batteries from electrode materials and structures, membranes manufacture, electrolyte modification, and stack and system application. Finally, we forecast the development direction of the zinc-iron flow battery technology for large-scale energy storage.

RESUMEN

RAB6A is a member of RAB GTPase family and plays an important role in the targeted transport of neurotrophic receptors and inflammatory cytokines. RAB6A-mediated secretory pathway is involved in many physiological and pathological processes. Defects in RAB6A-mediated secretory pathway may lead to the development of many diseases, including cancer. However, its role in cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) has not yet been revealed. We explored the regulatory role of RAB6A in the stem-like subsets of CCA. We showed that RAB6A knockdown (KD) impedes cancer stem cells (CSCs) properties and epithelial-mesenchymal transition in vitro and that suppression of RAB6A inhibits tumor growth in vivo. We screened target cargos of RAB6A in CCA cells and identified a extracellular matrix component as the target cargo. RAB6A binds directly to OPN, and RAB6A KD suppressed OPN secretion and inhibited the interaction between OPN and αV integrin receptor. Moreover, RAB6A KD inhibited the AKT signaling pathway, which is a downstream effector of the integrin receptor signaling. In addition, shRNA targeting OPN blocked endogenous expression of OPN and consequently weakened CSCs properties in RAB6A-formed spheres. Similarly, inhibitor of AKT signaling, MK2206 also impedes oncogenic function of RAB6A in the stem-like subsets of CCA cells. In conclusion, our findings showed that RAB6A sustains CSCs phenotype maintenance by modulating the secretion of OPN and consequentially activating the downstream AKT signaling pathway. Targeting the RAB6A/OPN axis may be an effective strategy for CCA therapy.

RESUMEN

AIM: To perform a bibliometric analysis in the field of primary angle-closure disease (PACD) research to characterize current global trends and compare contributions from different countries, institutions, journals, and authors. METHODS: All PACD-related publications from 1991 to 2022 from the Web of Science Core Collection database were extracted. Microsoft Excel and VOSviewer were used to collect publication data, analyze publication trends, and visualize relevant results. RESULTS: A total of 1721 publications with 34 591 citations were identified. China produced the most publications (554) while ranking third in citations (8220 times). The United States contributed the most citations (12 315 times) with publications (362) ranking second. The Investigative Ophthalmology Visual Science was the most productive journal concerning PACD, and Aung Tin was the author with the highest number of publications in the field. Keywords were classified into three clusters, epidemiology and pathogenesis research, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and other imaging examinations, and glaucoma surgery treatment. Genome-wide association, susceptibility loci, OCT, and combined phacoemulsification have become new hot research topics in recent years since 2015. CONCLUSION: China, the United States, and Singapore make the most outstanding contributions in the field of PACD research. OCT, combined phacoemulsification, and gene mutation-related study, are considered the potential focus for future research.

RESUMEN

Accumulating evidence indicates that adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADSCs) are an effective treatment for diabetic refractory wounds. However, the application of ADSCs to diabetic wounds is still limited, indicating that we still lack sufficient knowledge regarding regulators/mediators of ADSCs during wound healing. Rab37, a member of RabGTPase, may function as regulator of vesicle trafficking, which is a crucial event for the secretion of cytokines by ADSCs. Our previous study indicated that Rab37 promotes the adiopogenic differentiation of ADSCs. In this study, we explored the role of Rab37 in ADSC-mediated diabetic wound healing. An in vivo study in db/db diabetic mice showed that Rab37-expressing ADSCs shortened the wound closure time, improved re-epithelialization and collagen deposition, and promoted angiogenesis during wound healing. An in vitro study showed that Rab37 promoted the proliferation, migration and endothelial differentiation of ADSCs. LC-MS/MS analysis identified Hsp90α and TIMP1 as up-regulated cytokines in conditioned media of Rab37-ADSCs. The up-regulation of Rab37 enhanced the secretion of Hsp90α and TIMP1 during endothelial differentiation and under high-glucose exposure. Interestingly, Rab37 promoted the expression of TIMP1, but not Hsp90α, during endothelial differentiation. PLA showed that Rab37 can directly bind to Hsp90α orTIMP1 in ADSCs. Moreover, Hsp90α and TIMP1 knockdown compromised the promoting effects of Rab37 on the proliferation, migration and endothelial differentiation of ADSCs. In conclusion, Rab37 promotes the proliferation, migration and endothelial differentiation of ADSCs and accelerates ADSC-mediated diabetic wound healing through regulating the secretion of Hsp90α and TIMP1.

RESUMEN

Vegetation change reflects sensitive responses of ecosystem environment to global climate change as well as land use. It is well known that land use type and its transformation affect vegetation change. However, how the changes in land use intensity (LUI) within different land use types impact vegetation and the interactions with other drivers remain poorly understood. We measured the LUI of Jiangsu Province, China, within the main land use types in 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010, 2015 and 2018 by combining remote sensing-based land use data with representative county scale economic and social indicators. Structural equation models (SEMs) were built to quantify the influences of long term LUI on vegetation change interacting with economic development, climate change and topographical conditions in transformed land, cropland, rural settlements and urbanized land, respectively. Seventy percent of significant vegetation change existed in non-transformed land use types. Although the area with a vegetation greening trend is larger than that with a vegetation browning trend, the vegetation browning areas is prominent in urbanized lands and some croplands in south basins. The constructed SEMs suggested the dominant negative effect of fast economic development regardless of land use types, while LUI played important and different direct and indirect effects on affecting vegetation change significantly interacting with economic development and climate change in different land use types. The LUI increasing led a vegetation greening in cropland, and stronger than climate warming with both positive direct and indirect effects for influencing climate change. The LUI change took negative effects on vegetation change in rural and urban areas, while a positive indirect effect of LUI increasing in urbanized land signaled the positive results of human managements. We then provided some land use-specific suggestions on basin scale for land management in Jiangsu. Our results highlight the necessity of long-term LUI quantification and promote the understanding of its effects on vegetation change interacted with other drivers within different land use types. This can be very helpful for sustainable land use and managements in regions with fast economic development.

RESUMEN

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the outbreak of acute primary angle-closure (APAC) during the COVID-19 Omicron variant pandemic in Shanghai. Methods: This single-center retrospective observational study included all newly diagnosed patients with APAC in Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat Hospital of Fudan University from December 15, 2022, to January 14, 2023 (pandemic group) during the COVID-19 pandemic of Omicron Variant, and from November 15, 2021, to February 14, 2022 (control group) when the infection rate of COVID-19 is very low in Shanghai. Demographic features, intraocular pressure, axial length, anterior chamber depth, lens thickness and pupil diameter were compared between the two groups. Results: A total of 223 patients (261 eyes) were included in the pandemic group and 75 patients (82 eyes) in the control group. The number of APAC patients and eyes in the pandemic group is 8.92-fold and 9.55-fold of the monthly average number in the control group. The onset dates of acute angle-closure were mainly between December 17 and December 31, 2022. In the pandemic group, 72.65% of patients with APAC had a recent COVID-19 infection. Among the COVID-19-positive patients, 72% suffered APAC attacks within 24h of the occurrence of COVID-19 symptoms and 92% within 3 days. The pandemic group showed a longer time from symptoms to treatment and larger pupil diameter than the control group (7.92 ± 6.14 vs 3.63 ± 2.93 days, p = 0.006; 4.53 ± 1.17 vs 3.78 ± 1.24 mm, p = 0.003, respectively). Conclusion: An outbreak of APAC attack was observed in our eye center during the COVID-19 Omicron variant pandemic in Shanghai. There may be a correlation between the onset of APAC and new COVID-19 Omicron variant infection, but the exact reason needs to be investigated further.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is a malignant tumour originating from the biliary epithelium that easily infiltrates, metastasizes and recurs. The deficiency of FBXO31 facilitates the initiation and progression of several types of cancer. However, the involvement of FBXO31 in CCA progression has remained unclear. METHODS: qRT-PCR was used to detect the expression of FBXO31 in CCA. The biological functions of FBXO31 were confirmed in vivo and in vitro. Sphere formation and flow cytometry were used to identify the stem cell properties of CCA. RESULTS: FBXO31 is downregulated in CCA and that deficiency of FBXO31 is associated with the TNM stage of CCA. Functional studies showed FBXO31 inhibits cell growth, migration, invasion, cancer stem cell (CSC) properties and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in vitro and impedes tumour growth in vivo. In addition, overexpression of FBXO31 increases the cisplatin (CDDP) sensitivity of CCA cells. RNA-sequencing analysis revealed that FBXO31 is involved in redox biology and metal ion metabolism in CCA cells during CDDP treatment. Further studies revealed that FBXO31 enhances ferroptosis induced by CDDP in CCA and CSC-like cells. FBXO31 enhances ubiquitination of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4), which leads to proteasomal degradation of GPX4. Moreover, overexpression of GPX4 compromises the promoting effects of FBXO31 on CDDP-induced ferroptosis in CCA and CSC-like cells. CONCLUSIONS: Our studies indicate that FBXO31 functions as a tumour suppressor in CCA and sensitizes CSC-like cells to CDDP by promoting ferroptosis and facilitating the proteasomal degradation of GPX4.

RESUMEN

The rice rhizosphere microbiota is crucial for crop yields and nutrient use efficiency. However, little is known about how co-occurrence patterns, keystone taxa and functional gene assemblages relate to soil pH in the rice rhizosphere soils. Using shotgun metagenome analysis, the rice rhizosphere microbiome was investigated across 28 rice fields in east-central China. At higher pH sites, the taxonomic co-occurrence network of rhizosphere soils was more complex and compact, as defined by higher average degree, graph density and complexity. Network stability was greatest at medium pH (6.5 < pH < 7.5), followed by high pH (7.5 < pH). Keystone taxa were more abundant at higher pH and correlated significantly with key ecosystem functions. Overall functional genes involved in C, N, P and S cycling were at a higher relative abundance in higher pH rhizosphere soils, excepting C degradation genes (e.g. key genes involved in starch, cellulose, chitin and lignin degradation). Our results suggest that the rice rhizosphere soil microbial network is more complex and stable at higher pH, possibly indicating increased efficiency of nutrient cycling. These observations may indicate routes towards more efficient soil management and understanding of the potential effects of soil acidification on the rice rhizosphere system.

RESUMEN

Customer bullying is a common phenomenon, causing short-term emotional distress or having long-term psychological impact on frontline employees of service enterprises, yielding either direct or indirect losses to service enterprises. While existing research has focused on the emotional and psychological impact of customer bullying on employees, little attention has been directed at the impact of customer bullying on negative employee behavior and internal mechanisms. In view of this, this paper draws on conservation of resources theory and discusses how and when customer bullying can lead to unethical behaviors. Furthermore, the mediating role of job insecurity and the moderating effect of organizational identification are analyzed. In study 1, 181 valid questionnaire data were collected at two time points, and regression data analysis was used to explore the effect of customer bullying on unethical behaviors through job insecurity. In study 2, 212 employees were recruited to investigate the moderating effect of organizational identification between customer bullying and unethical behaviors through a scenario experimental study. The results reveal that customer bullying is positively related to employees' job insecurity and unethical behaviors. Job insecurity partially mediates the positive relationship between customer bullying and unethical behaviors. Further, the regression analysis results indicate that the direct effect of customer bullying on unethical behaviors is moderated by organizational identification. This study provides theoretical guidance for entrepreneurs to reduce both employee job insecurity and unethical behavior.

RESUMEN

By combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscope based piezoresponse force microscopy and first-principles calculations, we have studied the low-energy band structure, atomic structure, and charge polarization on the surface of a topological semimetal candidate TaNiTe_{5}. Dirac-like surface states were observed on the (010) surface by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, consistent with the first-principles calculations. On the other hand, piezoresponse force microscopy reveals a switchable ferroelectriclike polarization on the same surface. We propose that the noncentrosymmetric surface relaxation observed by scanning tunneling microscopy could be the origin of the observed ferroelectriclike state in this novel material. Our findings provide a new platform with the coexistence of a ferroelectriclike surface charge distribution and novel surface states.

RESUMEN

The adipogenic differentiation ability of human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hADSCs) is critical for the construction of tissue engineering adipose, which shows promising applications in plastic surgery and regenerative medicine. RAB37 is a member of the small RabGTPase family and plays a critical role in vesicle trafficking. However, the role of RAB37 in adipogenic differentiation of hADSCs remains unclear. Here, we report that both the mRNA and protein levels of RAB37 fluctuated during adipogenic differentiation. Upregulation of RAB37 was observed at the early stage of adipogenic differentiation, which was accompanied by increased expression of transcription factors PPARγ2 and C/EBPα, and lipoprotein lipase (LPL). Overexpression of RAB37 promoted adipogenesis of hADSCs, as revealed by Oil Red O staining and increased expression of PPARγ2, C/EBPα, and LPL. Several upregulated cytokines related to RAB37-mediated adipogenic differentiation were identified using a cytokine array, including tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinase 1 (TIMP1). ELISA confirmed that upregulation of RAB37 increased the secretion of TIMP1 by hADSCs. Proximity ligation assay showed that RAB37 interacts with TIMP1 directly. Knockdown of TIMP1 compromised RAB37-mediated adipogenic differentiation. In addition, TIMP1 binds membrane receptor CD63 and integrin ß1. RAB37 promotes Tyr397 phosphorylation of FAK, an important protein kinase of the integrin ß1 signaling. Moreover, both knockdown of CD63 and inhibitor of FAK impeded RAB37-mediated adipogenic differentiation. In conclusion, RAB37 positively regulates adipogenic differentiation of hADSCs via the TIMP1/CD63/integrin ß1 signaling pathway.

RESUMEN

Deposition of Bi on InSb(111)B reveals a striking Sierpinski-triangle (ST)-like structure in Bi thin films. Such a fractal geometric topology is further shown to turn off the intrinsic electronic topology in a thin film. Relaxation of a huge misfit strain of about 30% to 40% between Bi adlayer and substrate is revealed to drive the ST-like island formation. A Frenkel-Kontrova model is developed to illustrate the enhanced strain relief in the ST islands offsetting the additional step energy cost. Besides a sufficiently large tensile strain, forming ST-like structures also requires larger adlayer-substrate and intra-adlayer elastic stiffnesses, and weaker intra-adlayer interatomic interactions.
