RESUMEN

Background: Neuropathic intestinal disorders continue to pose a significant burden, and current treatment options do not target the underlying cellular deficiencies. The goal of this study is to determine whether acupuncture and electroacupuncture (EA) can affect the growth of neuronal cells. Methods: Three groups of Lewis rats received 25 minutes of acupuncture twice a week for 10 weeks. The 3 groups of rats received treatment with either sham acupuncture (SA), real acupuncture (RA), or EA. After 10 weeks of treatment, skin and intestinal tissue were collected and analyzed for histology and mRNA expression of neuronal marker genes. Results: Compared with rats that received SA, rats that received RA and EA showed a significant increase in the mRNA expression levels of multiple neuronal genes in the skin. No significant histologic changes were seen. Conclusions: Acupuncture and EA result in significant changes in the expression of genes implicated as markers for neural stem cells, neural cell development, and neurons. This may, therefore, provide a novel avenue for developing treatments in patients suffering from intestinal aganglionic and neuropathic diseases.

RESUMEN

This article briefly reviews the biofield hypothesis and its scientific literature. Evidence for the existence of the biofield now exists, and current theoretical foundations are now being developed. A review of the biofield and related topics from the perspective of physical science is needed to identify a common body of knowledge and evaluate possible underlying principles of origin of the biofield. The properties of such a field could be based on electromagnetic fields, coherent states, biophotons, quantum and quantum-like processes, and ultimately the quantum vacuum. Given this evidence, we intend to inquire and discuss how the existence of the biofield challenges reductionist approaches and presents its own challenges regarding the origin and source of the biofield, the specific evidence for its existence, its relation to biology, and last but not least, how it may inform an integrated understanding of consciousness and the living universe.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To replicate the phantom leaf effect and demonstrate a possible means to directly observe properties of the biological field. DESIGN: Thirty percent to 60% of plant leaves were amputated, and the remaining leaf sections were photographed with corona discharge imaging. All leaves were cut before placement on film. A total of 137 leaves were used. SUBJECTS: Plant leaves of 14 different species. RESULTS: Ninety-six phantom leaf specimens were successfully obtained; 41 specimens did not yield the phantom leaf effect. CONCLUSIONS: A normally undetected phantom "structure," possibly evidence of the biological field, can persist in the area of an amputated leaf section, and corona discharge can occur from this invisible structure. This protocol may suggest a testable method to study properties of conductivity and other parameters through direct observation of the complete biological field in plant leaves, with broad implications for biology and physics.
