Ensuring proper energy, nutrient intake, and sleep is vital for athlete health and competitiveness. Despite previous studies investigating the nutrient intake among top-level collegiate female athletes in Japan, the status of snack consumption remains unclear. This study addressed this gap by surveying 70 top-level female university athletes. The survey included a self-administered diet history questionnaire, a qualitative food intake frequency survey, and a survey on snack and dietary supplement use. The results revealed a low frequency of snack intake (2.1 ± 2.3 days/week), with 55.7% of athletes reporting snack consumption. The energy intake in the snack-intake group was significantly higher than that in the without-snack-intake group (31.5 ± 10.0 vs. 26.6 ± 9.92 kcal/kg of BM, p = 0.047). Similarly, carbohydrate intake was significantly higher in the snack-intake group than in the without-snack-intake group (4.84 ± 1.71 vs. 3.96 ± 1.65 g/kg of BM/day, p = 0.035). However, neither group reached the recommended value of 5-8 g/kg of BM/day during the medium training period. Overall, this study emphasizes inadequate energy intake even among athletes with a high snack intake frequency, highlighting the necessity to enhance overall food consumption and underscoring the importance of nutritional education for incorporating appropriate complementary meals to improve performance.

This study aimed to determine whether adolescents' leisure screen time differed during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic compared to before the pandemic, and to identify factors that affect leisure screen time among Japanese high school students. The Health Behavior in School Children questionnaire was used to investigate differences in eating habits and physical and mental health. The results showed that the leisure screen time of Japanese high school students was 2.6 h (SD = 1.4) before the pandemic, and 3.2 h (SD = 1.5) during the pandemic. The factors that increased leisure screen time were found to differ between boys and girls. No significant deterioration in physical and mental health was observed. The impact of the pandemic on eating habits differed in boys and girls. Boys reported "not feeling great about life" as a factor that increased leisure screen time during the pandemic, suggesting that negative emotions influenced the increase in leisure screen time. The pandemic had a significant impact on girls' leisure screen time. Longer screen time should be carefully monitored because it can lead to sleep disturbances, worsening of mental health, and obesity. Compared with before the pandemic, the health status of boys and girls changed little. Eating habits tended to improve for both boys and girls.

Objectives: This study aimed to characterize the sleep quality and nutrient intake of Japanese female college athletes to provide specific conditioning support. Methods: A cross-sectional survey conducted between December 2019 and January 2020 during the regular training season in Niigata City, located at 139°02' E longitude and 37°55' N latitude. Overall, 120 female university student-athletes from eight clubs were selected. All sports were at the national level of competition. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) assessed sleep quality. Nutrient intake was assessed using Excel nutrition software through the Food Intake Frequency Questionnaire. Results: The mean PSQI score was 4.5 ± 2.5, with 29% of participants having a PSQI score ≥ 5.5. The sleep duration was 6.8 ± 1.1 h, with 45% of participants sleeping <7 h. The energy intake was 1800 ± 419 kcal, with no correlation between PSQI score and nutrient intake. Conclusions: PSQI scores were higher compared with other studies, but many participants had shorter sleep duration and lower nutrient intake, these data suggest that there is the possibility of improving the habits of Japanese athletes by increasing the subjects' amount of sleep time and food intake.

This study examined the self-assessment of Niigata's and Khabarovsk's adolescents' health status and their willingness to be vaccinated during the COVID-19 pandemic. A self-reported questionnaire was administered to 735 boys and girls (aged 15 years) from Niigata, Japan (n = 387), and Khabarovsk, Russia (n = 394), between May and July 2021. Specifically, this questionnaire focused on COVID-19, including a self-assessment of health status, adaptation to a new lifestyle, and impressions about the COVID-19 vaccination. The self-assessment was based on a 4-point scale: "Got very bad"; "Got a little bit bad"; "Did not change"; "Got better/I don't know". Additionally, binomial logistic regression was conducted to determine the association between the self-assessment of health status and the factors exacerbating their responses. Based on the findings, 25.7 and 29.9% of Niigata and Khabarovsk's adolescents, respectively, selected "Got very bad" and "Got a little bit bad" for their self-assessments, while the binomial logistic regression showed that the difficulty of adapting to a new lifestyle was a factor worsening the boys' subjective health. However, the items could not explain the deterioration of their subjective health in girls. Moreover, 76.9% of Niigata's adolescents were positive about the COVID-19 vaccination, compared to 35.5% of the adolescents in Khabarovsk.

A 74-year-old man presented with symptoms suggestive of acute pancreatitis, and a mass lesion measuring 25 mm was detected in the pancreatic head. Cytological and histopathological examinations of EUS-FNA specimens taken from the lesion demonstrated small cell (neuroendocrine) carcinoma. Tumor cells were immunoreactive for cytokeratin, synaptophysin, chromogranin A, CD56, and TTF-1, and PET-CT of the chest revealed a small tumor in the upper lobe of the left lung. Pulmonary carcinoma, particularly small cell carcinoma, infrequently presents with a solitary metastatic lesion in the pancreas as an initial manifestation and clinically simulates a primary pancreatic neoplasm. Because primary small cell carcinoma of the pancreas is very uncommon, metastasis from the lung should always be considered when evaluating pancreatic neoplasms showing a "small cell" morphology. Immunohistochemistry for TTF-1 is useful for determining the pulmonary origin of this type of neoplasm, and its application to cytology specimens is recommended.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to clarify the relationship between the triad risk assessment score and the sports injury rate in 116 female college athletes (average age, 19.8 ± 1.3 years) in seven sports at the national level of competition; 67 were teenagers, and 49 were in their 20s. METHODS: Those with menstrual deficiency for >3 months or <6 menses in 12 months were classified as amenorrheic athletes. Low energy availability was defined as adolescent athletes having a body weight <85% of ideal body weight, and for adult athletes in their 20s, a body mass index ≤17.5 kg/m2. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured on the heel of the right leg using an ultrasonic bone densitometer. Low BMD was defined as a BMD Z-score <-1.0. The total score for each athlete was calculated. The cumulative risk assessment was defined as follows: low risk (a total score of 0-1), moderate risk (2-5), and high risk (6). The injury survey recorded injuries referring to the injury survey items used by the International Olympic Committee. RESULTS: In swimming, significantly more athletes were in the low-risk category than in the moderate and high-risk categories (p = 0.004). In long-distance athletics, significantly more athletes were in the moderate-risk category than in the low and high-risk categories (p = 0.004). In the moderate and high-risk categories, significantly more athletes were in the injury group, whereas significantly more athletes in the low-risk category were in the non-injury group (p = 0.01). Significantly more athletes at moderate and high-risk categories had bone stress fractures and bursitis than athletes at low risk (p = 0.023). DISCUSSION: These results suggest that athletes with relative energy deficiency may have an increased injury risk.

In recent years, there has been an increase in the number of hypertensive diseases and the various diseases associated with them. A major cause of these is excessive salt intake. The purpose of the present study was to examine whether chewing hard foods lowers the saltiness threshold. Fifteen subjects (fourteen women and one man) participated in the present study. Two types of gummies are available as ingredients: hard and soft gummies. The saltiness thresholds before and after chewing of each gummi were studied using 11 different NaCl solutions. Then, points of subjective equality (PSEs) were calculated to detect changes in the saltiness for each subject. In the soft Gumi condition, there was no significant difference in PSE for the saltiness between before and after ingesting Gumi (p>0.05), while in the hard Gumi condition, the PSE for the saltiness significantly decreased after ingesting Gumi compared with the value of before ingesting Gumi (p=0.001). From these results, we concluded that sensitivity to saltiness would increase after mastication of hard foods such as hard Gumi.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to clarify the morphological characteristics of the lateral talocalcaneal ligament (LTCL). METHODS: This study examined 100 legs from 54 Japanese cadavers. The LTCL was classified into three types: Type I, the LTCL branches from the calcaneofibular ligament (CFL); Type II, the LTCL is independent of the CFL and runs parallel to the calcaneus; and Type III, the LTCL is absent. The morphological features measured were fiber bundle length, fiber bundle width, and fiber bundle thickness. RESULTS: The LTCL was classified as Type I in 18 feet (18%), Type II in 24 feet (24%), and Type III in 58 feet (58%). All LTCLs were associated with the anterior talofibular ligament at the talus. There was no significant difference in morphological characteristics by Type for each ligament. CONCLUSIONS: The LTCL was similar to the CFL in terms of fiber bundle width and fiber bundle thickness.

Since increased cerebral oxygenation reflects cerebral activation, this study investigated the effect of mastication frequency on prefrontal cortex oxygenation. Eleven young volunteers (nine women, two men; M age = 20.9 years, SD = 0.9) carried out three trials in which they were asked to chew a tasteless gum for 3 min at varying (rates of mastication frequency: 30, 70, and 110). Breaks of 2 min each were interleaved between trials. The oxygenation of the left prefrontal cortex was monitored by near-infrared spectroscopy. We found a significant increase in cortical oxygenation during gum chewing in all three conditions ( p < .05), compared with a resting level; we also found a significant difference between the Fast and Slow chewing conditions, and between the Fast and Normal (70 rpm) conditions, both findings seemingly related to activation of a motor command in frontal brain regions. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the effect of mastication frequency on cerebral oxygenation. Possible implications of this finding are discussed.

BACKGROUND: The effective energy density (ED) diet model for customized meal plans has not been adequately explored, and the specific differences in appetite sensation among age groups remain unclear. DESIGN: A randomized, crossover study was conducted in 2010 to examine the effects of lunches with different dietary EDs on sensory properties across age groups. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: In this experiment, 276 healthy Japanese subjects aged 22 to 59 years consumed packed lunches over six sessions. Using the control meal (150 g cooked rice, sautéed beef menu containing 40 g raw beef, and 240 g vegetable) as a reference, a high-meat/low-rice meal, a low-vegetable meal, a medium-fat/low-vegetable meal, a high-fat meal, and a high-fat/low-vegetable meal were served as modified test meals with varying macronutrient distribution and ED. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Subjective levels of fullness and satisfaction were assessed over time by visual analogue scale ratings. STATISTICAL ANALYSES PERFORMED: Data were analyzed using analysis of variance with body mass index as a covariate followed by Bonferroni post hoc tests. RESULTS: Meals with high vegetable content resulted in greater fullness and satisfaction than meals with low vegetable content, regardless of the diner's age. Particularly among the 500-kcal low-ED meals, a high-meat meal resulted in greater fullness and satisfaction than a medium-fat/low-vegetable meal among participants aged 30 to 40 years. Postprandial fullness was significantly higher with control meal than with high-meat meal among participants aged 40 to 50 years. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicated that high vegetable content in the low-ED diet model provided sufficient fullness and satisfaction despite the low energy content and increased rice content is more effective for satiety than increased meat content for Japanese adults aged around 40 years.

The amf gene cluster encodes a probable secretion system for a peptidic morphogen, AmfS, which induces aerial mycelium formation in Streptomyces griseus. Here we examined the transcriptional control mechanism for the promoter preceding amfT (PamfT) directing the transcription of the amfTSBA operon. High-resolution S1 analysis mapped a transcriptional start point at 31 nucleotides upstream of the translational start codon of amfT. Low-resolution analysis showed that PamfT is developmentally regulated in the wild type and completely abolished in an amfR mutant. The -35 region of PamfT contained the consensus sequence for the binding of BldD, a pleiotropic negative regulator for morphological and physiological development in Streptomyces coelicolor A3(2). The cloned bldD locus of S. griseus showed high sequence similarity to the S. coelicolor counterpart. Transcription of bldD occurred constitutively in both the wild type and an A-factor-deficient mutant of S. griseus, which suggests that the regulatory role of BldD is independent of A-factor. The gel retardation assay revealed that purified BldD and AmfR recombinant proteins specifically bind PamfT. Overproduction of BldD in the wild-type cell conferred a bald phenotype (defective in aerial growth and streptomycin production) and caused marked repression of PamfT activity. An amfT-depleted mutant also showed a bald phenotype but PamfT activity was not affected. Both the bldD-overproducing wild-type strain and the amfT mutant were unable to induce aerial growth of an amfS mutant in a cross-feeding assay, which indicates that these strains are defective in the production of an active AmfS peptide. The results overall suggests that two independent regulators, AmfR and BldD, control PamfT activity via direct binding to determine the transcriptional level of the amf operon responsible for the production and secretion of AmfS peptide, which induces the erection of aerial hyphae in S. griseus.
