RESUMEN

A woman from sub-Saharan Africa living in the Middle East, presented with acute abdominal pain and COVID-19 infection. She underwent a laparotomy and left salpingectomy for a left tubal ruptured ectopic pregnancy. The histopathology report revealed the presence of tubal schistosomiasis in addition to the ectopic sac. The report emphasises the importance of considering female genital schistosomiasis as a potential cause of ectopic pregnancy and the need for collaboration between obstetricians and infectious disease physicians in the definitive treatment of the disease to reduce reproductive morbidity. This case report highlights the possibility of female genital schistosomiasis as a cause of ectopic pregnancy in women from endemic regions.

RESUMEN

Behçet's disease is a rare autoimmune condition characterized by systemic vasculitis, an inflammation of blood vessels, with an unknown etiology. It has varied clinical presentations. Herein, we present the case of a 31-year-old male patient with neuro-Behçet disease who presented with subarachnoid hemorrhage and microaneurysms.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to develop the ranostic nanocomposite by conjugating quantum dots with functional, therapeutic and targeting moieties. The quantum dots nanoparticles were used to diagnose and deliver anti-tumor drugs in a controlled manner to cancerous cells by fusing with tumor cell surfaces. To enhance the attachment of the nano-composite to specific tumor cells without harming neighboring normal cells, folic acid was conjugated with the nano-composite as folate receptors are over expressed in different kinds of tumors. The study was conducted for one year at the University of Punjab. The quantum dots were synthesized by a hydrothermal process using cadmium acetate and sodium sulfide. The response was evaluated on breast tumor samples for binding and nano-composite delivery under a fluorescent microscope. Fourier-transform infrared analysis was performed to confirm CdS conjugation with cysteine, folic acid and curcumin. The results showed that the quantum dot conjugate provides a two-way attack on cancer cells and causes increased cellular apoptosis. Further testing on murine animal models is required to confirm the results of this research study.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC), a prevalent malignant tumor with a low survival rate, is often accompanied by ferroptosis, which is a recently-described type ofprogrammed cell death. Investigating the significance of ferroptosis driver genes in HNSC, this study aimed to assess their diagnostic and prognostic values, as well as their impact on treatment and tumor immune function. The results of this investigation provide novel insight into using ferroptosis-related genes as molecular biomarkers as well as precise chemotherapeutic targets for the therapy of HNSC. METHODOLOGY: A detailed in silico and in vitro experiment-based methodology was adopted to achieve the goals. RESULTS: A total of 233 ferroptosis driver genes were downloaded from the FerrDB database. After comprehensively analyzing these 233 ferroptosis driver genes by various TCGA databases, RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq), and Reverse Transcription Quantitative Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-qPCR) techniques, TP53 (tumor protein 53), PTEN (Phosphatase and TENsin homolog deleted on chromosome 10), KRAS (Ki-ras2 Kirsten rat sarcoma viral oncogene homolog), and HRAS (Harvey Rat sarcoma virus) were identified as differentially expressed hub genes. Interestingly, these hub genes were found to have significant (P < 0.05) variations in their mRNA and protein expressions and effects on overall survival of the HNSC patients. Moreover, targeted bisulfite-sequencing (bisulfite-seq) analysis revealed that promoter hypomethylation pattern was associated with up-regulation of hub genes (TP53, PTEN, KRAS, and HRAS). In addition to this, hub genes were involved in diverse oncogenic pathways. CONCLUSION: Since HNSC pathogenesis is a complex process, using ferroptosis driver hub genes (TP53, PTEN, KRAS, and HRAS) as a diagnostic and prognostic tool, and therapeutically targeting those genes through appropriate drugs could bring a milestone change in the drug discovery and management and survival in HNSC.

RESUMEN

Meckel's diverticulum (MD)1, the most common congenital anomaly of the gastrointestinal tract, occurs in 2% of the population with males being more symptomatic than females. In this case, a 32-year-old male presented with sudden onset colicky abdominal pain, bilious vomiting, and absolute constipation. Emergency laparotomy was done on his virgin abdomen, as a result MD and vitelline cyst along with a fibrous cord connecting the two were identified. Knotting of an ileal loop around this cord had resulted in intestinal obstruction. Meckel's diverticulectomy, along with cord resection, was carried out. The patient made smooth recovery and was discharged on the fifth postoperative day with no complications. The importance of this study is to highlight the case of symptomatic MD in an adult male as it can be a cause of intestinal obstruction and should always be considered in a patient presenting with symptoms of intestinal obstruction.

RESUMEN

Gender disparity, that is the unequal attitude and treatment of people due to their gender, is found in many fields including the medical profession. Not only it is present in developed countries but is also a major concern in developing countries like Pakistan. According to data, Pakistani female doctors face gender discrimination that negatively impacts their workplace performance and has proven to be a hindrance to them taking up leadership roles. The patriarchal mindset of society, workplace harassment, and lack of basic facilities in the hospital for working mothers are just a few of the factors that compel women to leave their careers. Even if they continue to work, women have to perform the duties of a mother and homemaker along with their jobs, and that negatively impacts their skills as doctors and as leaders. Efforts need to be taken to encounter all the problems that are negatively affecting leadership roles of female doctors such as providing equal opportunities, arranging awareness campaigns about creating a workplace environment that is favorable to all genders, and creating policies that will help working mothers by forming daycare centers and giving paid maternity leaves. This will help in alleviating the gender disparity in the healthcare system and will increase the chances of female doctors proving themselves good doctors and leaders.
