BACKGROUND: Many previous studies evaluated a combination of transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for treating early hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC); however, studies evaluating combination therapy for beyond-the-Milan criteria HCC are scarce. METHODS: A total of 120 patients with beyond-the-Milan criteria HCC who have viable tumour after first TACE will be enrolled in this multi-institutional, parallel, pragmatic, randomized controlled trial. Patients with metastasis, vascular invasion, or a sum of tumour diameter > 8 cm will be excluded. Eligible patients will be randomly assigned to combination TACE and RFA therapy or TACE monotherapy groups. Patients in the combination therapy group will receive a second TACE and subsequent RFA at the viable tumour. Patients in the TACE monotherapy group will receive only second TACE. Patients in both groups will undergo magnetic resonance imaging 4-6 weeks after second TACE. The primary endpoint is 1-month tumour response, and secondary endpoints are progression-free survival, overall response rate, number of treatments until CR, overall survival, and change in liver function. DISCUSSION: Although TACE can be used to treat intermediate-stage HCC, it is difficult to achieve CR by first TACE in most intermediate-stage patients. Recent studies show a survival advantage of combination therapy over monotherapy. However, most studies evaluating combination therapy included patients with a single tumour sized < 5 cm, and no studies included patients with intermediate-stage but more advanced (i.e., beyond-the-Milan criteria) HCC. This study will evaluate the efficacy of combined TACE and RFA therapy for patients with advanced HCC within the intermediate stage. BACKGROUND: Urinary crystals are the most diverse forms of urine sediments. Reference images for typical urinary crystals are common, however, but images for interpreting atypical urinary crystals are very rare. The authors reviewed various forms and solubility tests of urine crystals to interpret atypical crystals found in clinical specimens. METHODS: We reviewed textbooks on urinary crystals and articles published in PubMed. Some atypical crystals were confirmed using a solubility test. RESULTS: The classification, shape, chemical structure, and solubility of the crystals were summarized. In the solubility test, some crystals showed different results; therefore, a new solubility test was proposed based on the literature review. We presented various types of calcium oxalates. CONCLUSIONS: These review articles will be helpful in the examination of atypical crystals found in clinical specimens. The solubility test requires additional studies to discriminate the inconsistent results between the authors.

BACKGROUND: Laboratory parameter abnormalities are commonly observed in COVID-19 patients; however, their clinical significance remains controversial. We assessed the prevalence, characteristics, and clinical impact of laboratory parameters in COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Daegu, Korea. METHODS: We investigated the clinical and laboratory parameters of 1,952 COVID-19 patients on admission in nine hospitals in Daegu, Korea. The average patient age was 58.1 years, and 700 (35.9%) patients were men. The patients were classified into mild (N=1,612), moderate (N=294), and severe (N=46) disease groups based on clinical severity scores. We used chi-square test, multiple comparison analysis, and multinomial logistic regression to evaluate the correlation between laboratory parameters and disease severity. RESULTS: Laboratory parameters on admission in the three disease groups were significantly different in terms of hematologic (Hb, Hct, white blood cell count, lymphocyte%, and platelet count), coagulation (prothrombin time and activated partial thromboplastin time), biochemical (albumin, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, lactate, blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, and electrolytes), inflammatory (C-reactive protein and procalcitonin), cardiac (creatinine kinase MB isoenzyme and troponin I), and molecular virologic (Ct value of SARS-CoV-2 RdRP gene) parameters. Relative lymphopenia, prothrombin time prolongation, and hypoalbuminemia were significant indicators of COVID-19 severity. Patients with both hypoalbuminemia and lymphopenia had a higher risk of severe COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS: Laboratory parameter abnormalities on admission are common, are significantly associated with clinical severity, and can serve as independent predictors of COVID-19 severity. Monitoring the laboratory parameters, including albumin and lymphocyte count, is crucial for timely treatment of COVID-19.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) started to spread in Daegu beginning at the end of February 2020. IgG and IgM antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 were measured in hospitalized patients with COVID-19 with moderate to severe symptoms to improve the understanding of antibody responses. METHODS: We enrolled 312 patients with COVID-19 admitted to seven hospitals located in Daegu. Using serum (or plasma) samples from patients with polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections, both IgG and IgM antibodies were measured using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (R-FIND CO¬VID-19 ELISA, SG medical, Seoul, Korea). RESULTS: The median value from the initial diagnosis, confirmed by SARS-CoV-2 PCR, to the sampling date was 24 days (day 1 to 88). The total positive rate of IgG was 93.9% and the positive IgM rate was 39.4%, without considering the elapsed period after diagnosis. Positive IgG and IgM rates were highest at 100.0% and 59.0%, respectively, at 3 weeks (15 - 21 days). IgG showed a high positive rate of 79.3% even within 7 days after the initial diag-nosis of the disease and maintained a positive rate of 97.8% until after 8 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: Among hospitalized patients with COVID-19, IgG was detected from the beginning of the diagnosis and persisted for an extended time period.

BACKGROUND: In Korea, the first community outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) occurred in Daegu on February 18, 2020. This study was performed to investigate the prevalence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) antibodies in healthcare workers (HCWs) at 6 major hospitals in Daegu. METHODS: Blood specimens of 2,935 HCWs at 6 major hospitals in Daegu from January 2021 to February 2021 were collected. Every specimen was tested for antibody against SARS-CoV-2 using both Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (Roche Diagnostics, Rotkreuz, Switzerland) and R-FIND COVID-19 IgG/M/A enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit (SG medical Inc., Seoul, Korea) as screening tests. If 1 or more of these screening test results was positive, 2 additional antibody tests were performed using Abbott Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG assay (Abbott, Abbott Park, IL, USA) and cPass SARS-CoV-2 Neutralization Antibody Detection Kit (GenScript USA Inc., Piscataway, NJ, USA). If 2 or more of the total 4 test results were positive, it was determined as positive for the antibody against SARS-CoV-2. RESULTS: According to the criteria of SARS-CoV-2 antibody positivity determination, 12 subjects were determined as positive. The overall positive rate of the SARS-CoV-2 antibody was 0.41% (12/2,935). Of the 12 subjects determined as positive, 7 were diagnosed with COVID-19, and the remaining 5 were nondiagnosed cases of COVID-19. CONCLUSION: In early 2021, the overall seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibody among HCW located in Daegu was 0.41%, and 0.17% excluding COVID-19 confirmed subjects. These results were not particularly high compared with the general public and were much lower than HCWs in other countries.

Keratoacanthoma (KA) is a common cutaneous neoplasm which often resembles typical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in both its clinical and historical presentation. Several studies have attempted to identify methods for distinguishing between KA and SCC, however, none of these have proven to play any obvious roles in these tumors. Given this we went on to evaluate mitochondrial microsatellite instability (mtMSI) in KA and SCC in an effort to understand these tumors better. DNA was isolated from paired normal and tumoral tissues donated by 57 KA patients and 43 SCC patients. MtMSI was then analyzed using eight microsatellite markers and was observed in 2 (3.5%) of the 57 KA patients and 8 (18.6%) of the 43 SCC patients, respectively. MtMSI was also shown to affect different locations depending on tumor type. In KA patients, mtMSI was detected at mitochondrial D514 D-loop and presented with (CA) n repeats, in contrast, all of the SCC patient experienced mtMSI at the D310 with (C)n repeats of the D-loop region. These differences in location were found to be significant, which may support the hypothesis that KA and SCC have different pathogenetic pathways. Our results also suggest that mtMSI may be a candidate for developing novel differential diagnostic methods for KA and SCC.

BACKGROUND/AIM: The aim of this study was to detect circulating tumor cells (CTC) in the peripheral blood of gastrointestinal cancer patients using conditionally reprogrammed cell (CRC) culture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We confirmed the sensitivity of the CRC culture method. Five ml of blood were obtained from 81 cancer patients (56 colorectal and 25 gastric). The collected mononuclear cells were cultured for 4 weeks in the CRC condition. Finally, cultured cells were characterized by RT-PCR for the expression of hTERT and MAGE A1-6 mRNA. RESULTS: The CRC method had a CTC detection limit of 6 cells for gastric cancer cells. After culture of 81 blood specimens, 38 formed visible cells, including 5 colonies. Among the 38 cells, 13 were hTERT positive and 4 were MAGE A1-6 positive. The final CTC detection rate was 16.0%. CONCLUSION: The CRC culture may potentially be used to evaluate the metastatic cancer cells in the circulation.

The present study aimed to verify the efficacy of the conditionally reprogrammed cell (CRC) culture method for the detection of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in breast cancer. CTCs were isolated from the peripheral blood of patients with breast cancer, and culture of the collected CTCs was performed according to the conditional reprogramming protocol. Total RNA was extracted from cultured CTCs, and the hTERT and MAGE A1-6 genes were amplified using reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR). In addition, RNA extraction from another blood sample was performed and the expression of the two genes was analyzed by RT-PCR only. Following CRC culture, grown CTCs were observed in 7 samples (23.3%). The CTC detection rates by RT-PCR for the hTERT and MAGE A1-6 genes in CTCs grown using the CRC culture method were 26.7 and 10.0%, respectively. The positive expression rates for the hTERT and MAGE genes in CTCs assessed by RT-PCR only were 44.1 and 23.5%, respectively. When combining the positive expression rates of RT-PCR only and CRC culture for the hTERT and MAGE A1-6 genes, CTC detection rates increased to 53.3 and 23.3%, respectively. Additionally, when combining the positive expression rates of the two genes by either method, the CTC detection rate was the highest value observed. In conclusion, the present study revealed the potential of CRC culture in the detection of CTCs in breast cancer. Furthermore, a combination of CRC culture and RT-PCR for the hTERT and MAGE A1-6 genes is useful in enhancing the detection rate of CTCs in the blood.

Serologic assays have been developed to detect infection with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This study was conducted to evaluate the diagnostic performance of an immunochromatography-based assay of human serum for COVID-19. The present study enrolled 149 subjects who had been tested by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for COVID-19 and were classified into two groups: 70 who were positive for COVID-19 and 79 who were negative for COVID-19 based on RT-PCR. An immunochromatography-based COVID-19 immunoglobulin G (IgG)/immunoglobulin M (IgM) rapid test on the sera of the study population was applied to measure the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve compared to RT-PCR, with a 95% confidence interval (CI). IgM or IgG antibodies were detected in 65 subjects (92.9%) classified as positive for COVID-19 and in three subjects (3.8%) classified as negative for COVID-19. The sensitivity and specificity percentages for IgM or IgG antibodies were 92.9% (95% CI: 84.1-97.6) and 96.2% (95% CI: 89.3-99.2), respectively, with 95.6% PPV and 93.8% NPV. The PPV rapidly improved with increasing disease prevalence from 19.8% to 96.1% in the presence of either IgM or IgG, while the NPV remained high with a change from 99.9% to 93.1%. The area under the ROC curve was 0.945 (95% CI: 0.903-0.988) for subjects with either IgM or IgG positivity. In conclusion, the immunochromatography-based COVID-19 IgG/IgM rapid test is a useful and practical diagnostic assay for detection of COVID-19, especially in the presence of IgM or IgG antibodies.

BACKGROUND: The validation of sample stability through pneumatic tube system (PTS) is essential. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of PTS transportation on laboratory results. METHODS: Paired EDTA and SST blood samples were collected from 56 randomly selected patients. Laboratory parameters were compared between PTS group and hand-delivered group. RESULTS: No statistical differences were observed for complete blood counts, white blood cell differential parameters, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and most chemistry parameters between PTS and hand-delivered transport procedures. Mean platelet volume results obtained from samples transported through PTS were lower than that obtained from samples transported through hand-delivered method (P = 0.001). The results of aspartate aminotransferase (P = 0.000), lactate dehydrogenase (P = 0.000), and hemolysis index (P = 0.000) from PTS group were higher than that from hand-delivered group. CONCLUSIONS: All laboratories should validate the stability of the results from samples according to transportation method.

A total of 76 blood samples from patients without malignant disease and 107 blood samples from patients with malignant disease were investigated for the presence of circulating tumor cells (CTCs). To detect CTCs, hematopoietic cells were removed from the blood samples and different RNA extraction methods were used to amplify the melanoma antigen-encoding gene family member A1-family member A6 (MAGE A1-6) and the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) gene as potential CTC markers. Comparison between four methods for extracting RNA from the blood was performed. The samples were enriched by cluster of differentiation 45 (CD45) antibody capturing, and the reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to amplify the MAGE A1-6 and hTERT genes. MAGE A1-6 and hTERT gene expression levels were also evaluated in 14 cancer cell lines, and the MAGE A1-6 and hTERT expression levels were 85.7 and 100%, respectively. The RNeasy method demonstrated the most sensitivity in the SNU1 cells mixed with blood, although the differences between methods was non-significant. The positive expression levels of MAGE A1-6 and hTERT was 11.8% in the control group and 58.9% in those with malignant disease. In the 70 patients with colorectal cancer, positive expression levels of MAGE A1-6 or hTERT were significantly higher in stages T3 and T4 compared with in stages T1 and T2. The CTC detection method involving CD45 antibody capture, RNA extraction and MAGE A1-6 and hTERT reverse transcription resulted in good rates of sensitivity and specificity. Thus, the present study concluded that MAGE A1-6 and hTERT genes may be potential and practical markers for CTCs in a clinical setting.

The melanoma-associated antigen (MAGE) genes are known to be expressed in various kinds of tumors including lung cancer. Although they are studied as targets for immunotherapy and tools for early detection of lung cancer, the correlation between MAGE expression and the prognosis in lung cancer has not been clarified. In this study, we evaluated the relationship between MAGE A1-6 gene expression and the clinical prognosis in lung cancer. Bone marrow aspirations were performed in 60 patients who were diagnosed as lung cancer and underwent lung cancer surgery between 2007 and 2008. Each bone marrow was examined using nested reverse transcription- polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) with the MAGE common primer to detect MAGE A1-6. Overall survival rate, disease-free survival rate, recurrence, and distant metastasis were reviewed retrospectively. Survival periods were analyzed using SPSS ver. 20.0. Of the total 60 lung cancer patients, 9 patients (15%) had MAGE A1-6. MAGE A1-6-positive patients showed poor overall survival and overall disease-free survival rates (43.8 ± 26.1, 43.2 ± 26.9 months, respectively) compared with MAGE A1-6-negative patients (54.4 ± 17.2, 44.8 ± 22.1 months, respectively). No significant difference was shown in either survival rates. In conclusion, MAGE A1-6 expression of bone marrow in lung cancer patients correlated with poor survival rates. We suggest that MAGE A1-6 may be considered as a novel prognostic factor for lung cancer which leads to effective follow-up and treatment.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin C may interfere with the results of urine dipstick tests. We investigated the incidence of urinary vitamin C and its interference with urine dipstick reagents using a vitamin C dipstick. METHODS: The incidence of urinary vitamin C was determined in patients and healthy individuals undergoing routine medical check-ups. Interference tests were performed using samples with various amounts of added vitamin C. For clinical samples, we identified false-negative dipstick glucose, hemoglobin, and leukocyte esterase results based on the urine sediment and serum glucose results. RESULTS: Vitamin C was found in the urine of 18.1% of the subjects overall, and 23.1% of those undergoing medical check-ups. Dipstick results for glucose, leukocyte esterase, and hemoglobin differed between samples without vitamin C and with added vitamin C. When vitamin C was detected in clinical urine samples, 42.3%, 10.6%, and 8.2% of the glucose, hemoglobin, and leukocyte esterase dipstick tests were rated as false negative, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin C was frequently found in clinical urine samples, and its concentration was higher in individuals undergoing medical check-ups. Urinary vitamin C can interfere with the urine dipstick results. This study gives useful information for predicting false-negative rates of urine dipstick tests caused by vitamin C.

BACKGROUND: Various subtypes of melanoma-associated antigens (MAGEs) are expressed in the tumor tissues of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). However, little data are currently available on how the gene expression of MAGEs impacts clinical patterns and oncologic outcomes. We have therefore evaluated the expression of MAGE-A1-6 (A1-6) subtypes in tumor tissues of patients with HNSCC and the clinical impact of this expression. METHODS: This was a retrospective review of 53 patients with histologically proven HNSCC of the oral cavity, oropharynx, larynx, or hypopharynx who underwent both treatment and analysis by reverse transcription (RT)-PCR assay with a common primer to identify the expression of MAGE-A1-6 subtypes in the tumor tissue. The clinicopathologic factors and oncologic outcomes of these patients and the correlations of both to MAGE-A1-6 gene expression were analyzed. RESULTS: MAGE-A1-6 subtypes were expressed in the tumor tissues of 37 patients (69.8 %). Patient age of ≥65 years [p = 0.031, hazard ratio (HR) 4.866] and advanced American Joint Committee on Cancer stage (p = 0.035, HR 4.291) were independent risk factors for expression of MAGE-A1-6 subtypes. Patients with MAGE-A1-6 expression had lower disease-free survival (p = 0.029), disease-specific survival (p = 0.070), and overall survival (p = 0.017) rates. Overall survival rate was independently associated to chemotherapy (p = 0.011, HR 2.859), while no surgery (p = 0.050, HR 2.400) and MAGE-A1-6 expression (p = 0.050, HR 2.527) showed borderline significance. CONCLUSION: In our patient group the expression of MAGE-A1-6 subtypes in tumor tissues of patients with HNSCC was correlated with advanced clinical stage of cancer and poor oncologic outcomes. We suggest that gene expression of MAGE-A1-6 subtypes may be considered to be a predictive factor to determine patient treatment or follow-up strategy.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported the expression of the melanoma-associated antigen (MAGE) gene in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). In this study, we evaluated the correlations between MAGE expression in sputum and the clinical features and oncologic outcomes of SCC of the larynx and hypopharynx. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 119 patients treated for SCC of the larynx and hypopharynx and analysis of their induced sputum by nested reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) to detect the MAGE-A1-6 gene. The associations between MAGE expression and clinical characteristics were analyzed. RESULTS: Expression of MAGE-A1-6 in sputum was identified in 57 of 119 patients (47.9%), and was independently correlated to double primary cancer (p = .024; odds ratio [OR] = 4.135). Expression of MAGE-A1-6 in sputum was correlated to poor survival. CONCLUSION: Expression of MAGE-A1-6 in sputum predicts poor oncologic outcome in patients with SCC of the larynx and hypopharynx. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Head Neck 38: E736-E740, 2016.

Peritoneal metastasis is the most frequent cause of death in patients with gastric cancer. Reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay of peritoneal washes has been used to predict peritoneal metastasis of gastric carcinoma. We applied carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and melanoma-associated gene (MAGE) RT-PCR for the detection of peritoneal metastasis of gastric carcinoma after curative surgery and evaluated its clinical significance. Peritoneal washes were obtained from 117 patients with gastric carcinoma. MAGE A1-A6 and CEA RT-PCR were performed, and the results were evaluated according to their clinicopathologic characteristics. Three-year follow-up clinical studies were periodically performed, and disease-free survival rates were retrospectively investigated using the medical records. Among 117 peritoneal fluids, 11 cases (9.4%) revealed MAGE expression and 38 cases (32.5%) revealed CEA expression. When focusing on recurrence rates, RT-PCR-positive had much higher recurrence rates than RT-PCR-negative cases (32.5% vs 5.2%, P < 0.01). Univariate analysis revealed that depth of invasion, lymph node metastasis, tumor node metastasis (TNM) stage, Lauren classification, and MAGE and CEA expressions were independent prognostic factors for recurrence. In a multivariate analysis, MAGE expression and TNM stage were significantly and independently related to recurrence in patients who underwent curative resection. MAGE expression was determined to be the most important prognostic factor for recurrence (hazard ratio: 12.487, P < 0.01). It is feasible to identify free cancer cells in peritoneal lavage by using a MAGE A1-A6 and CEA RT-PCR. MAGE RT-PCR results disclosed significant associations with peritoneal recurrence and proved to be the most important factor for the recurrence rate in patients with gastric carcinoma who had undergone radical resection.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS), also known as periorificial lentiginosis, is a rare autosomal dominant inherited disease with an incidence of 1/200,000 live-borns. Mutations in the serine-threonine kinase 11 (STK11) gene are considered the major cause of PJS. The most frequent complication at young age is recurrent intussusception due to multiple hamartomatous polyps, primarily in the small intestine. Although extremely rare, the small bowel should be fully examined to be certain additional intussusceptions are not present. Herein, we report on a case of PJS with germline mutation of STK11 in a 12-year-old young girl who presented as a rare case of two small intestinal intussusceptions and review the literature.

BACKGROUND: Most mutations in the reverse transcriptase (RT) gene of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) are related to resistance to antiviral agents. Cross-sectional studies on the mutations of this gene are rare. Thus, we analyzed the mutation patterns of RT genes and their biochemical parameters. METHODS: From 2009 to 2012, 301 blood specimens from patients with chronic hepatitis B at Daegu Catholic University Medical Center were retrospectively analyzed for the RT gene sequence of HBV, ALT, hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg), and HBV DNA. The mutation patterns of the RT gene were compared with the biochemical parameters. RESULTS: Of the 301 patients, 100 (33.2%) had no RT gene mutations. The remaining showed the following mutation patterns: rtM204I/V (50.2%), rtL180M (39.2%), and rtA181T/V (19.6%). Combined mutations were found in 146 cases (48.5%). Of these, the combination of amino acid changes at rt180+rt204 (49.3%) was most frequently detected, followed by rt181+rt236 (11.0%) and rt173+rt180+rt204 (9.6%). In the mutated group, HBV DNA and HBeAg positive rates were significantly higher (P<0.05 for both). Phenotypic analysis showed that lamivudine resistance was most frequently detected (34.6%), followed by adefovir resistance (15.6%). Multidrug resistance was detected in 48 cases (15.9%). The adefovir-resistant group had a higher proportion of cases with HBV loads greater than 2,000 IU/mL. CONCLUSIONS: We found correlations between the mutation status of the RT domain and biochemical parameters such as HBV DNA and HBeAg positive rate. The presence of RT gene mutations could therefore be utilized to predict clinical status.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a new method for gastric cancer detection with gastric juice using melanoma-associated gene (MAGE) RNA and pepsinogen (PG). METHODS: In total, 183 gastric juice and paired serum specimens were obtained from 134 patients with gastric cancer and 49 healthy individuals. The gastric juice specimens were analyzed with MAGE A1 to A6 nested reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. The serum and gastric juice PG were measured with a PG I and II immunoassay. RESULTS: The gastric juice PG I and PG I/II ratios were more accurate than those of serum. The combination test using the gastric PG I/II ratio and MAGE was the most accurate, with a sensitivity of 77.6% and a specificity of 87.8%. The sensitivity was 78.8% for stage I gastric cancer and not influenced by cancer location or pathologic type. CONCLUSIONS: The combination test is potentially an additional tool for gastric cancer detection.

BACKGROUND: The expression of melanoma-associated antigen (MAGE) gene has been studied in many types of cancer. In the present study we evaluated the correlation between MAGE expression and the clinical features and oncologic outcomes of patients with papillary thyroid cancer (PTC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 85 patients who underwent surgery for PTC and analysis of their tumor tissue by nested reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) with the MAGE common primer to detect the MAGE A1-6 gene. The associations between MAGE expression and clinical characteristics were analyzed. RESULTS: Expression of MAGE A1-6 in PTC was identified in 31 patients (36.5%). Only papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) was significantly related to MAGE expression in our univariate analysis (p=0.002) and multivariate analysis (p=0.006). MAGE had no significant impact on survival. CONCLUSION: Expression of MAGE A1-6 in PTC is significantly correlated with the presence of PTMC. Our study suggests that MAGE expression may be related to early-stage PTC.
