RESUMEN

Limited special education and related services are available for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Macau, especially those who are educated in general education classrooms. No intervention study has been conducted on these children. This study was conducted to explore the relationship between a board game play intervention and board game play behaviors and social communication of children with ASD educated in general education classrooms in Macau. A repeated measures design was used and the results of this study showed the mean occurrence of unprompted board game play behaviors per session during intervention was not significantly different from that during pre- or post-intervention. The mean occurrence of social communication per session during intervention was significantly higher than that during pre- and post-intervention. These findings suggest a positive relationship existed between the board game intervention used in this study and social communication of children with ASD.

RESUMEN

Background and purpose: Futile recanalization occurs in a significant proportion of patients with basilar artery occlusion (BAO) after endovascular thrombectomy (EVT). Therefore, our goal was to develop a visualized nomogram model to early identify patients with BAO who would be at high risk of futile recanalization, more importantly, to aid neurologists in selecting the most appropriate candidates for EVT. Methods: Patients with BAO with EVT and the Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction score of ≥2b were included in the National Advanced Stroke Center of Nanjing First Hospital (China) from October 2016 to June 2021. The exclusion criteria were lacking the 3-month Modified Rankin Scale (mRS), age <18 years, the premorbid mRS score >2, and unavailable baseline CT imaging. Potential predictors were selected for the construction of the nomogram model and the predictive and calibration capabilities of the model were assessed. Results: A total of 84 patients with BAO were finally enrolled in this study, and patients with futile recanalization accounted for 50.0% (42). The area under the curve (AUC) of the nomogram model was 0.866 (95% CI, 0.786-0.946). The mean squared error, an indicator of the calibration ability of our prediction model, was 0.025. A web-based nomogram model for broader and easier access by clinicians is available online at https://trend.shinyapps.io/DynNomapp/. Conclusion: We constructed a visualized nomogram model to accurately and online predict the risk of futile recanalization for patients with BAO, as well as assist in the selection of appropriate candidates for EVT.

RESUMEN

Background and Purpose: Accurate prediction of functional outcome after stroke would provide evidence for reasonable post-stroke management. This study aimed to develop a machine learning-based prediction model for 6-month unfavorable functional outcome in Chinese acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patient. Methods: We collected AIS patients at National Advanced Stroke Center of Nanjing First Hospital (China) between September 2016 and March 2019. The unfavorable outcome was defined as modified Rankin Scale score (mRS) 3-6 at 6-month. We developed five machine-learning models (logistic regression, support vector machine, random forest classifier, extreme gradient boosting, and fully-connected deep neural network) and assessed the discriminative performance by the area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve. We also compared them to the Houston Intra-arterial Recanalization Therapy (HIAT) score, the Totaled Health Risks in Vascular Events (THRIVE) score, and the NADE nomogram. Results: A total of 1,735 patients were included into this study, and 541 (31.2%) of them had unfavorable outcomes. Incorporating age, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score at admission, premorbid mRS, fasting blood glucose, and creatinine, there were similar predictive performance between our machine-learning models, while they are significantly better than HIAT score, THRIVE score, and NADE nomogram. Conclusions: Compared with the HIAT score, the THRIVE score, and the NADE nomogram, the RFC model can improve the prediction of 6-month outcome in Chinese AIS patients.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: About 40% of acute ischemic stroke patients are under antiplatelet pretreatment. Previous studies have shown conflicting results on the effect of prior antiplatelet agents on post thrombolytic clinical outcomes. METHODS: A systematic search using PubMed and EMBASE databases for eligible studies. Prior antiplatelet safety was measured by symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH) and mortality. Efficacy was measured by functional independence and favorable functional outcome. RESULTS: Crude analysis indicated that antiplatelet pretreatment was associated with sICH and mortality. In adjusted analysis, the results confirmed a nonsignificant association between antiplatelet pretreatment and a higher risk of sICH and mortality, but demonstrated that antiplatelet pretreatment tended to improve functional independence and favorable functional outcome. Subgroup analysis detected a racial disparity in prior antiplatelet effect on sICH and the association between antiplatelet pretreatment and sICH was dependent on different antiplatelet regiments. CONCLUSION: There was no significant difference in sICH and mortality between patients with and without antiplatelet pretreatment. Besides, antiplatelet pretreatment did not adversely affect the efficacy outcomes. The prevalence of sICH among Asians receiving antiplatelet pretreatment was relatively high. Additionally, it needs to be noticed that the effect of preexisting antiplatelet on clinical outcomes may be dependent on post thrombolytic antiplatelet regiments.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study is to examine the psychometric properties of an instrument to measure word problem solving skills in mathematics related to speed with 706 sixth grade Chinese and Singaporean students. Rasch measurement models were applied to examine the reliability, unidimensionality, rating scale functioning, item difficulty, and person difficulty. The differential item functioning (DIF) analysis was also performed to examine the differences in item difficulty estimates between Chinese and Singaporean students. Results suggest that the data satisfied the unidimensionality requirements of the Rasch model and that most of the item difficulty measures aligned the person ability distribution. The instrument demonstrated adequate reliability. The fit statistics were within acceptable limits for the vast majority of items, with a few exceptions. The rating scale structure functioned properly although the middle categories had very few observations. Deleting misfitting cases and collapsing middle categories slightly improved the psychometric properties. DIF analysis revealed that four items were more difficult for Chinese students whereas two other items were more difficult for the Singaporean students. Results also indicated that the Chinese participants scored higher than the Singaporean participants for 11 of the 14 items and the Singaporean students scored higher than their Chinese cohorts in the other 3 items. The validation of this instrument has implications for the teaching and learning of mathematical word problems in practice.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Primary retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells have a limited capacity to re-establish epithelial morphology and to maintain native RPE function in vitro, and all commercially available RPE cell lines have drawbacks of morphology or function; therefore, the establishment of new RPE cell lines with typical characteristics of RPE would be helpful in further understanding of their physiological and pathological mechanisms. Here, we firstly report a new spontaneously generated RPE line, fhRPE-13A, from a 13-week aborted foetus. We aimed to investigate its availability as a RPE model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: RNA-seq data were mapped to the human genome assembly hg19. Global transcriptional data were analysed by Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) and differentially expressed genes (DEGs). The morphology and molecular characteristics were examined by immunofluorescence, transmission electron micrographs, PCR and western blot. Photoreceptor outer segments (POS) phagocytosis assay and transepithelial resistance measurement (TER) were performed to assess phagocytic activity and barrier function, respectively. RESULTS: The fhRPE-13A cells showed typical polygonal morphology and normal biological processes of RPE. Meanwhile they were capable of POS phagocytosis in vitro, and the expression level of TYR and TYRP1 were significantly higher than that in ARPE-19 cells. CONCLUSIONS: The foetal human RPE line fhRPE-13A is a valuable system for researching phagocytosis and morphogenesis of RPE in vitro.
