RESUMEN

Exploring whether informal environmental regulations (INER) can achieve carbon reduction in the context of pollution reduction and carbon reduction, as well as how to achieve carbon reduction, can help solve the dual failures of the market and government in environmental protection. Based on the polycentric governance theory and considering the characteristics of social subject environmental participation, the Stackelberg game is used to demonstrate the impact mechanism of INER on CO2. In addition, using the panel data of China's 30 provinces from 2003 to 2018, this paper validates the effectiveness of INER by Pooled Ordinary Least Square (POLS) and threshold panel model. Then, the mediating effect model is used to test the mechanism of INER's effect on carbon reduction. The results show that corruption is not conducive to CO2 reduction. The reduction effect of INER on CO2 exhibits heterogeneity with changes in other non-greenhouse gas pollutants. While INER effectively reduces local corruption, its more substantial indirect impact on CO2 reduction is prominent when levels of other pollutants are lower. Comparative analysis reveals that there are still biased governance behaviors to cope with INER's pressure in some regions nowadays. The findings show that for countries facing the dual task of pollution control and carbon reduction, the key to leveraging the supervisory role of INER should be focused on mitigating information asymmetry caused by the characteristics of CO2. Therefore, in the process of environmental protection, the public environmental participation system should be improved, and the process of disclosing polluters' carbon information should be accelerated.

The environment noise may disturb animal behavior and echolocation via three potential mechanisms: acoustic masking, reduced attention and noise avoidance. Compared with the mechanisms of reduced attention and noise avoidance, acoustic masking is thought to occur only when the signal and background noise overlap spectrally and temporally. In this study, we investigated the effects of spectrally non-overlapping noise on echolocation pulses and electrophysiological responses of a constant frequency-frequency modulation (CF-FM) bat, Hipposideros pratti. We found that H. pratti called at higher intensities while keeping the CFs of their echolocation pulses consistent. Electrophysiological tests indicated that the noise could decrease auditory sensitivity and sharp intensity tuning, suggesting that spectrally non-overlapping noise imparts an acoustic masking effect. Because anthropogenic noises are usually concentrated at low frequencies and are spectrally non-overlapping with the bat's echolocation pulses, our results provide further evidence of negative consequences of anthropogenic noise. On this basis, we sound a warning against noise in the foraging habitats of echolocating bats.

Investigating the effects of various host plants on protective and detoxifying enzyme activities in insects could provide insights into the adaptation mechanisms of insects to host plants. In the present study, we measured superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), catalase(CAT), carboxylesterase(CarE), acetylcholinesterase (AchE), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity levels in Heterolocha jinyinhuaphaga Chu (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) larvae fed on four honeysuckle varieties (wild variety, Jiufeng 1, Xiangshui 1, and Xiangshui 2). The results showed that levels of SOD, POD, CAT, CarE, AchE, and GST activities in H. jinyinhuaphaga larvae fed on the four honeysuckle varieties differed. The enzyme activity levels were the highest when larvae were fed on the wild variety, followed by Jiufeng 1 and Xiangshui 2, and the lowest when fed on Xiangshui 1. Furthermore, the enzyme activity levels increased with an increase in larval age. According to the results of two - way analysis of variance, the interaction between host plants and larval age had no significant effect on SOD, POD, CAT, CarE, AchE, and GST activities in H. jinyinhuaphaga larvae (p ˃0.05).

RESUMEN

High level noise can damage cochlear hair cells, auditory nerve and synaptic connections between cochlear hair cells and auditory nerve, resulting in noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). Recent studies have shown that animal cochleae have circadian rhythm, which makes them different in sensitivity to noise throughout the day. Cochlear circadian rhythm has a certain relationship with brain-derived neurotrophic factor and glucocorticoids, which affects the degree of hearing loss after exposure to noise. In this review, we summarize the research progress of the regulation of cochlear sensitivity to noise by circadian rhythm and prospect the future research direction.

The manufacturing industry directly reflects national productivity, and it is also an industry with high energy consumption and severe carbon emissions. This study decomposes the influential factors on carbon emissions in China's manufacturing industry from 1995 to 2018 into industry value added, energy consumption, fixed asset investment, carbon productivity, energy structure, energy intensity, investment carbon intensity, and investment efficiency by Generalized Divisia Index Model. The decoupling analysis of carbon emissions and industry value added is carried out to investigate the states of the manufacturing industry under the pressure of "low carbon" and "economy." Results show that first, fixed asset investment is the driving force of carbon emissions, followed by industry value added; investment carbon intensity, carbon productivity, investment efficiency, and energy intensity are the mitigating factors; simultaneously, the impacts of energy consumption and energy structure are fluctuating. Second, the decoupling of manufacturing has improved, especially in the light industry. Third, the decoupling of carbon emissions and economic development is mainly dominated by the decoupling of energy consumption and industry added value. Therefore, reducing the proportion of coal consumption and optimizing the energy structure are significant ways to promote the low-carbon development of the manufacturing industry.

Acoustic communication signals are inevitably challenged by ambient noise. In response to noise, many animals adjust their calls to maintain signal detectability. However, the mechanisms by which the auditory system adapts to the adjusted pulses are unclear. Our previous study revealed that the echolocating bat, Hipposideros pratti, increased its pulse intensity in the presence of background white noise. In vivo single-neuron recording demonstrated that the auditory midbrain neurons tuned to the second harmonic (H2 neurons) increased their minimal threshold (MT) to a similar degree as the increment of pulse intensity in the presence of the background noise. Furthermore, the H2 neurons exhibited consistent spike rates at their best amplitudes and sharper intensity tuning with background white noise compared with silent conditions. The previous data indicated that sound intensity analysis by auditory midbrain neurons was adapted to the increased pulse intensity in the same noise condition. This study further examined the echolocation pulse frequency and frequency analysis of auditory midbrain neurons with noise conditions. The data revealed that H. pratti did not shift the resting frequency in the presence of background noise. The auditory midbrain neuronal frequency analysis highly linked to processing the resting frequency with the presence of noise by presenting the constant best frequency (BF), frequency sensitivity, and frequency selectivity. Thus, our results suggested that auditory midbrain neuronal responses in background white noise are adapted to process echolocation pulses in the noise conditions.

Based on the extended STIRPAT model and panel data from 2005 to 2015 in 20 industrial sectors, this study investigates the influential factors of carbon intensity, including employee, industry added value, fixed-assets investment, coal consumption, and resource tax. Meanwhile, by expanding the spatial weight matrix and using the Spatial Durbin Model, we reveal the spatiotemporal characteristics of carbon intensity. The results indicate that Manufacturing of Oil Processing and Coking Processing (S7), Manufacturing of Non-metal Products (S10), Smelting and Rolling Process of Metal (S11), and Electricity, Gas, Water, Sewage Treatment, Waste and Remediation (S17) contribute most to carbon intensity in China. The carbon intensity of 20 industrial sectors presents a spatial agglomeration characteristic. Meanwhile, industry added value inhibits the carbon intensity; however, employee, coal consumption, and resource tax promote carbon intensity. Finally, coal consumption appears to have spillover effects, and the employee has an insignificant impact on the carbon intensity of industrial sectors.

On December 19, 2017, China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) announced the official launch of the much-anticipated national emissions trading system (ETS), which is a critical period for the transition from the eight carbon emission trading pilot projects to the national market at this stage. Comprehensively evaluating the efficiency of China's eight carbon trading pilots is vital for strengthening the construction of its national ETS. This paper investigates the weak-form efficiency of eight carbon trading markets in China. We use a series of variance ratio tests to identify the efficiency from the market set up to the May 4, 2018, of all markets. The results indicate that the majority of the carbon trading markets are inefficient and only Beijing, Hubei, and Fujian markets are efficient. The China's carbon trading market is gradually maturing and implemented. In addition, we analyze the factors have impact on the market efficiency. It shows that the liquidity, volume, allocation allowance, and transparency in information are significant factors; meanwhile, the regional policy and cross cooperation also are important factors. Finally, this paper puts forward several policy recommendations on how to strengthen the effectiveness of China carbon trading markets based on the empirical results.
