The black soldier fly (BSF), Hermetia illucens, has gained traction recently as a means to achieve closed-loop production cycles. BSF can subsist off mammalian waste products and their consumption of such waste in turn generates compost that can be used in agricultural operations. Their environmental impact is minimal and BSF larvae are edible, with a nutritional profile high in protein and other essential vitamins. Therefore, it is conceivable to use BSF as a mechanism for both reducing organic waste and maintaining a low-impact food source for animal livestock or humans. The main drawback to BSF as a potential human food source is they are deficient in fat-soluble vitamins such as Vitamins A, D, and E. While loading BSF with essential vitamins may be achieved via diet-based interventions, this undercuts the goal of a closed-loop as specialized diets would require additional supply chains. An alternative is to genetically engineer BSF that can synthesize these essential vitamins. Here we describe a BSF line that has been engineered with the two main carotenoid biosynthetic genes, CarRA and CarB for production of provitamin carotenoids within the Vitamin A family. Our data describe the manipulation of the BSF genome to insert transgenes for expression of functional protein products.

Objectives: Type one diabetes (T1D) in children places substantial responsibility on parents as caregivers. This study investigated caregiver burden in parents of children with T1D by exploring the financial, physical, social, spiritual, and emotional or psychological problems they experienced. Methods: We conducted a qualitative scoping review of the databases PsycINFO, PROSPERO, OVID Medline, OVID EMBASE, Cochrane Library (CDSR and Central), EBSCO CINAHL, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Global, and SCOPUS. Of 119 full text articles assessed for eligibility, 18 peer-reviewed qualitative studies were included. Studies were considered relevant if they focused on diabetes management and parental burden or the experience of caregiving for a child with T1D. Results: Using thematic analysis, six interrelated themes were identified: (a) experiencing chronic sorrow, (b) assuming responsibility for glucose highs and lows, (c) managing T1D and nighttime sleep disturbances, (d) making career sacrifices and choices to optimize T1D care, (e) navigating social experiences postdiagnosis, and (f) discovering new sources of support through online platforms. Conclusions: This synthesis highlights an all-encompassing experience involved in caretaking for a child with T1D. Caregiving duties lead to a constant sense of vigilance, especially due to fear of hypoglycemic incidents. Parents commonly experience challenges with balancing work demands with T1D management, which lead to career and financial sacrifices. Their burden of care is exacerbated by a lack of reliable respite care but helped somewhat by online peer support. Future research is needed on the care burden differences between mothers and fathers and how sociodemographic factors affect how caregiver burden is experienced.

Seladelpar, a selective peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor δ (PPARδ) agonist, improves markers of hepatic injury in human liver diseases, but histological improvement of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and liver fibrosis has been challenging with any single agent. To discover how complementary agents could work with seladelpar to achieve optimal outcomes, this study evaluated a variety of therapeutics (alone and in combination) in a mouse model of NASH. Mice on a high-fat amylin liver NASH (AMLN) diet were treated for 12 wk with seladelpar, GLP-1-R (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor) agonist liraglutide, apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1 (ASK1) inhibitor selonsertib, farnesoid X receptor (FXR) agonist obeticholic acid, and with seladelpar in combination with liraglutide or selonsertib. Seladelpar treatment markedly improved plasma markers of liver function. Seladelpar alone or in combination resulted in stark reductions in liver fibrosis (hydroxyproline, new collagen synthesis rate, mRNA indices of fibrosis, and fibrosis staining) compared with vehicle and the other single agents. Robust reductions in liver steatosis were also observed. Seladelpar produced a reorganization of metabolic gene expression, particularly for those genes promoting peroxisomal and mitochondrial lipid oxidation. In summary, substantial improvements in NASH and NASH-induced fibrosis were observed with seladelpar alone and in combination with liraglutide in this model. Broad gene expression analysis suggests seladelpar should be effective in concert with diverse mechanisms of action.NEW & NOTEWORTHY NASH is a chronic, progressive, and increasingly problematic liver disease that has been resistant to treatment with individual therapeutics. In this study using a diet-induced mouse model of NASH, we found that the PPARδ agonist seladelpar reduced fibrosis and NASH pathology alone and in combinations with a GLP-1-R agonist (liraglutide) or an ASK1 inhibitor (selonsertib). Liver transcriptome analysis comparing each agent and coadministration suggests seladelpar should be effective in combination with a variety of therapeutics.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pruritus is a debilitating symptom for many people living with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC). In studies with seladelpar, a selective peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-delta agonist, patients with PBC experienced significant improvement in pruritus and reduction of serum bile acids. Interleukin-31 (IL-31) is a cytokine known to mediate pruritus, and blocking IL-31 signaling provides relief in pruritic skin diseases. This study examined the connection between seladelpar's antipruritic effects and IL-31 and bile acid levels in patients with PBC. APPROACH AND RESULTS: IL-31 levels were quantified in serum samples from the ENHANCE study of patients with PBC receiving daily oral doses of placebo (n = 55), seladelpar 5 mg (n = 53) or 10 mg (n = 53) for 3 months, and for healthy volunteers (n = 55). IL-31 levels were compared with pruritus using a numerical rating scale (NRS, 0-10) and with bile acid levels. Baseline IL-31 levels closely correlated with pruritus NRS ( r = 0.54, p < 0.0001), and total ( r = 0.54, p < 0.0001) and conjugated bile acids (up to 0.64, p < 0.0001). Decreases in IL-31 were observed with seladelpar 5 mg (-30%, p = 0.0003) and 10 mg (-52%, p < 0.0001) versus placebo (+31%). Patients with clinically meaningful improvement in pruritus (NRS ≥ 2 decrease) demonstrated greater dose-dependent reductions in IL-31 compared to those without pruritus improvement (NRS < 2 decrease). Strong correlations were observed for the changes between levels of IL-31 and total bile acids ( r = 0.63, p < 0.0001) in the seladelpar 10 mg group. CONCLUSIONS: Seladelpar decreased serum IL-31 and bile acids in patients with PBC. The reductions of IL-31 and bile acids correlated closely with each other and pruritus improvement, suggesting a mechanism to explain seladelpar's antipruritic effects.

Rapid divergence and subsequent reoccurring patterns of gene flow can complicate our ability to discern phylogenetic relationships among closely related species. To what degree such patterns may differ across the genome can provide an opportunity to extrapolate better how life history constraints may influence species boundaries. By exploring differences between autosomal and Z (or X) chromosomal-derived phylogenetic patterns, we can better identify factors that may limit introgression despite patterns of incomplete lineage sorting among closely related taxa. Here, using a whole-genome resequencing approach coupled with an exhaustive sampling of subspecies within the recently divergent prairie grouse complex (genus: Tympanuchus), including the extinct Heath Hen (T. cupido cupido), we show that their phylogenomic history differs depending on autosomal or Z-chromosome partitioned SNPs. Because the Heath Hen was allopatric relative to the other prairie grouse taxa, its phylogenetic signature should not be influenced by gene flow. In contrast, all the other extant prairie grouse taxa, except Attwater's Prairie-chicken (T. c. attwateri), possess overlapping contemporary geographic distributions and have been known to hybridize. After excluding samples that were likely translocated prairie grouse from the Midwest to the eastern coastal states or their resulting hybrids with mainland Heath Hens, species tree analyses based on autosomal SNPs consistently identified a paraphyletic relationship with regard to the Heath Hen with Lesser Prairie-chicken (T. pallidicinctus) sister to Greater Prairie-chicken (T. c. pinnatus) regardless of genic or intergenic partitions. In contrast, species trees based on the Z-chromosome were consistent with Heath Hen sister to a clade that included its conspecifics, Greater and Attwater's Prairie-chickens (T. c. attwateri). These results were further explained by historic gene flow, as shown with an excess of autosomal SNPs shared between Lesser and Greater Prairie-chickens but not with the Z-chromosome. Phylogenetic placement of Sharp-tailed Grouse (T. phasianellus), however, did not differ among analyses and was sister to a clade that included all other prairie grouse despite low levels of autosomal gene flow with Greater Prairie-chicken. These results, along with strong sexual selection (i.e., male hybrid behavioral isolation) and a lek breeding system (i.e., high variance in male mating success), are consistent with a pattern of female-biased introgression between prairie grouse taxa with overlapping geographic distributions. Additional study is warranted to explore how genomic components associated with the Z-chromosome influence the phenotype and thereby impact species limits among prairie grouse taxa despite ongoing contemporary gene flow.

In the midst of the sixth mass extinction, limited resources are forcing conservationists to prioritize which species and places will receive conservation action. Evolutionary distinctiveness measures the isolation of a species on its phylogenetic tree. Combining a species' evolutionary distinctiveness with its globally endangered status creates an EDGE score. We use EDGE scores to prioritize the places and species that should be managed to conserve bird evolutionary history. We analyzed all birds in all countries and important bird areas. We examined parrots, raptors, and seabirds in depth because these groups are especially threatened and relatively speciose. The three focal groups had greater median threatened evolutionary history than other taxa, making them important for conserving bird evolutionary history. Australia, Brazil, Indonesia, Madagascar, New Zealand, and the Philippines were especially critical countries for bird conservation because they had the most threatened evolutionary history for endemic birds and are important for parrots, raptors, and seabirds. Increased enforcement of international agreements for the conservation of parrots, raptors, and seabirds is needed because these agreements protect hundreds of millions of years of threatened bird evolutionary history. Decisive action is required to conserve the evolutionary history of birds into the Anthropocene.

Estos tres grupos tuvieron una mayor mediana de historia evolutiva amenazada que los demás taxones, por lo que son de suma importancia para la conservación de la historia evolutiva ornitológica. In efforts to prevent extinction, resource managers are often tasked with increasing genetic diversity in a population of concern to prevent inbreeding depression or improve adaptive potential in a changing environment. The assumption that all small populations require measures to increase their genetic diversity may be unwarranted, and limited resources for conservation may be better utilized elsewhere. We test this assumption in a case study focused on the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), a cosmopolitan circumpolar species with 19 named subspecies. We used whole-genome resequencing to generate over two million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from multiple individuals of all peregrine falcon subspecies. Our analyses revealed extensive variation among subspecies, with many island-restricted and nonmigratory populations possessing lower overall genomic diversity, elevated inbreeding coefficients (F ROH)-among the highest reported, and extensive runs of homozygosity (ROH) compared to mainland and migratory populations. Similarly, the majority of subspecies that are either nonmigratory or restricted to islands show a much longer history of low effective population size (N e). While mutational load analyses indicated an increased proportion of homozygous-derived deleterious variants (i.e., drift load) among nonmigrant and island populations compared to those that are migrant or reside on the mainland, no significant differences in the proportion of heterozygous deleterious variants (i.e., inbreeding load) was observed. Our results provide evidence that high levels of inbreeding may not be an existential threat for some populations or taxa. Additional factors such as the timing and severity of population declines are important to consider in management decisions about extinction potential.

BACKGROUND: The majority of women with epithelial ovarian cancer (OvCa) are diagnosed with metastatic disease, resulting in a poor 5-year survival of 31%. Obesity is a recognized non-infectious pandemic that increases OvCa incidence, enhances metastatic success and reduces survival. We have previously demonstrated a link between obesity and OvCa metastatic success in a diet-induced obesity mouse model wherein a significantly enhanced tumor burden was associated with a decreased M1/M2 tumor-associated macrophage ratio (Liu Y et al. Can, Res. 2015; 75:5046-57). METHODS: The objective of this study was to use pre-clinical murine models of diet-induced obesity to evaluate the effect of a high fat diet (HFD) on response to standard of care chemotherapy and to assess obesity-associated changes in the tumor microenvironment. Archived tumor tissues from ovarian cancer patients of defined body mass index (BMI) were also evaluated using multiplexed immunofluorescence analysis of immune markers. RESULTS: We observed a significantly diminished response to standard of care paclitaxel/carboplatin chemotherapy in HFD mice relative to low fat diet (LFD) controls. A corresponding decrease in the M1/M2 macrophage ratio and enhanced tumor fibrosis were observed both in murine DIO studies and in human tumors from women with BMI > 30. CONCLUSIONS: Our data suggest that the reported negative impact of obesity on OvCa patient survival may be due in part to the effect of the altered M1/M2 tumor-associated macrophage ratio and enhanced fibrosis on chemosensitivity. These data demonstrate a contribution of host obesity to ovarian tumor progression and therapeutic response and support future combination strategies targeting macrophage polarization and/or fibrosis in the obese host.

Buffer solutions are a critical component of the manufacturing process for therapeutic proteins and other biomolecules. The traditional way to make and use buffers is space and resource intensive, creating operational bottlenecks that impact efficiencies and costs. Here we describe a full-scale, current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) capable buffer stock blending system that has an open-source, configurable design and that overcomes the challenges of traditional buffer preparation. The system comprises simplified control and operation using mass flow to provide on-demand supply of buffer solutions. The system also has self-cleaning capability and is amenable to be operated as a closed system. The data will demonstrate the excellent performance and capabilities of the system as well as illustrate its potential transformative impact on biomanufacturing.

Invasive fungal infections remain a devastating and potentially deadly complication in the setting of immunocompromised patients, such as in the setting of cancer, transplants, and other immune deficiencies. Infection with dematiaceous molds remains a less common but clear and present etiology. We present here a patient with relapsed acute myeloid leukemia who was neutropenic for a prolonged period. Symptoms worsened during the hospital course, including left-sided sinus swelling, which was also noted on imaging. ENT performed a bedside endoscopy and biopsied an eschar forming in the left nasal cavity. This was ultimately found to be acute invasive rhinosinusitis due to infection with the mold Exserohilum rostratum The patient was started on Posaconazole and Amphotericin B. He eventually also underwent surgical debridement. Infections with this organism are very uncommon, as noted in our literature search. In the diagnostic methods employed in this case, we utilized pathology, culture and microscopy, as well as mass spectrometry which was used to confirm the diagnosis.

Our Paper uses two independent methods (carbon dioxide flux and heat flux) to measure the rates of natural source zone depletion (NSZD) at a petroleum release site in Hawaii. The two methods yielded estimates of the NSZD rate that agreed within a factor of 2. We disagree with the technical commentors (Beckett et al., 2022). Specifically, the available data indicate that the observed NSZD is not occurring through a two-stage process of methane generation at the water table followed by methane oxidation in the vadose zone; rather direct aerobic oxidation of LNAPL in the vadose zone is the simplest and most likely explanation for the observed heat generation. In addition, the agreement between the two independent NSZD rate measurement methods and the temporal consistency in the measured heat flux across two field events provides confidence that the NSZD rates presented in the paper are not greatly over or under-estimated.

The global health system (GHS) is ill-equipped to deal with the increasing number of transnational challenges. The GHS needs reform to enhance global resilience to future risks to health. In this article we argue that the starting point for any reform must be conceptualizing and studying the GHS as a complex adaptive system (CAS) with a large and escalating number of interconnected global health actors that learn and adapt their behaviours in response to each other and changes in their environment. The GHS can be viewed as a multi-scalar, nested health system comprising all national health systems together with the global health architecture, in which behaviours are influenced by cross-scale interactions. However, current methods cannot adequately capture the dynamism or complexity of the GHS or quantify the effects of challenges or potential reform options. We provide an overview of a selection of systems thinking and complexity science methods available to researchers and highlight the numerous policy insights their application could yield.   We also discuss the challenges for researchers of applying these methods and for policy makers of digesting and acting upon them. We encourage application of a CAS approach to GHS research and policy making to help bolster resilience to future risks that transcend national boundaries and system scales.

The genetic architecture of a phenotype can have considerable effects on the evolution of a trait or species. Characterizing genetic architecture provides insight into the complexity of a given phenotype and, potentially, the role of the phenotype in evolutionary processes like speciation. We use genome sequences to investigate the genetic basis of phenotypic variation in redpoll finches (Acanthis spp.). We demonstrate that variation in redpoll phenotype is broadly controlled by a ~55-Mb chromosomal inversion. Within this inversion, we find multiple candidate genes related to melanogenesis, carotenoid coloration, and bill shape, suggesting the inversion acts as a supergene controlling multiple linked traits. A latitudinal gradient in ecotype distribution suggests supergene driven variation in color and bill morphology are likely under environmental selection, maintaining supergene haplotypes as a balanced polymorphism. Our results provide a mechanism for the maintenance of ecotype variation in redpolls despite a genome largely homogenized by gene flow.

Mesothelin (MSLN), a glycoprotein normally expressed by mesothelial cells, is overexpressed in ovarian cancer (OvCa) suggesting a role in tumor progression, although the biological function is not fully understood. OvCa has a high mortality rate due to diagnosis at advanced stage disease with intraperitoneal metastasis. Tumor cells detach from the primary tumor as single cells or multicellular aggregates (MCAs) and attach to the mesothelium of organs within the peritoneal cavity producing widely disseminated secondary lesions. To investigate the role of host MSLN in the peritoneal cavity we used a mouse model with a null mutation in the MSLN gene (MSLNKO). The deletion of host MSLN expression modified the peritoneal ultrastructure resulting in abnormal mesothelial cell surface architecture and altered omental collagen fibril organization. Co-culture of murine OvCa cells with primary mesothelial cells regardless of MSLN expression formed compact MCAs. However, co-culture with MSLNKO mesothelial cells resulted in smaller MCAs. An allograft tumor study, using wild-type mice (MSLNWT) or MSLNKO mice injected intraperitoneally with murine OvCa cells demonstrated a significant decrease in peritoneal metastatic tumor burden in MSLNKO mice compared to MSLNWT mice. Together, these data support a role for host MSLN in the progression of OvCa metastasis.

Although the Atlantic puffin Fratercula arctica is well studied throughout its temperate and low Arctic breeding range, few have studied the species in its far northern distribution. This study is the first to present data on the migratory movements of the "large-billed" subspecies, F. a. naumanni, that breeds in the high Arctic and which has significantly larger body size than those farther south. During 2013-2015, migration tracks were collected from nine adult puffins (6 males and 3 females) tagged with geolocators in northwest Greenland. Overall, female puffins traveled farther than males on their annual migration, with one female puffin traveling over 13,600 km, which was nearly a third farther than any tagged male in our study. Differential migration was observed in migratory phenology and route, with males using a form of chain migration with acute synchrony between individuals while females appeared to largely use leap-frog migration and showed little synchrony between individuals. Extreme sexual segregation in wintering areas was evidenced by two females that migrated to the southern limit of the species' range while the six males remained at the northern limit, and wintered along the sea ice edge during portions of the non-breeding season. Male puffins thus wintered in regions with sea surface temperatures up to 10° C cooler than female puffins, and in areas with generally colder sea surface temperatures when compared to previously known wintering areas of temperate and low Arctic puffin breeding populations. The degree to which body size enables male F. a. naumanni to remain in colder waters likely reflects differing life history constraints between sexes and populations (i.e., subspecies). Further study is warranted to investigate how recent changes in climate have further exacerbated the observed differences between sexes in high Arctic puffins and possibly other marine avian species.

The majority of women with ovarian cancer are diagnosed with metastatic disease, therefore elucidating molecular events that contribute to successful metastatic dissemination may identify additional targets for therapeutic intervention and thereby positively impact survival. Using two human high grade serous ovarian cancer cell lines with inactive TP53 and multiple rounds of serial in vivo passaging, we generated sublines with significantly accelerated intra-peritoneal (IP) growth. Comparative analysis of the parental and IP sublines identified a common panel of differentially expressed genes. The most highly differentially expressed gene, upregulated by 60-65-fold in IP-selected sublines, was the type I transmembrane protein AMIGO2. As the role of AMIGO2 in ovarian cancer metastasis remains unexplored, CRISPR/Cas9 was used to reduce AMIGO2 expression, followed by in vitro and in vivo functional analyses. Knockdown of AMIGO2 modified the sphere-forming potential of ovarian cancer cells, reduced adhesion and invasion in vitro, and significantly attenuated IP metastasis. These data highlight AMIGO2 as a new target for a novel anti-metastatic therapeutic approach aimed at blocking cohesion, survival, and adhesion of metastatic tumorspheres.

Birds can serve as effective biomonitors of air pollution, yet few studies have quantified external particulate matter accumulation on bird feathers. Biomonitoring of airborne elemental carbon (EC) is of critical significance because EC is a component of particulate matter with adverse effects on air quality and human health. To assess their effectiveness for use in EC monitoring, we compared EC accumulation on bird feathers at two sites that differed in vehicular traffic volume in an urban environment within the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area, USA. Moulted flight feathers from domestic chickens were experimentally exposed to ambient EC pollution for 5 days in two urban microenvironments 1.5 km distant from each other that differed in traffic volume--adjacent to an interstate highway and a university campus bus stop. Feathers near the highway accumulated approximately eight times more EC (307 ± 34 µg m-2 day-1), on average, than feathers near the bus stop (40 ± 9 µg m-2 day-1). These findings indicate that EC accumulation on feathers varies over short distances within urban areas and that bird feathers potentially can be used for biomonitoring airborne EC.

The southern boundary of prehispanic farming in South America occurs in central Mendoza Province, Argentina at approximately 34 degrees south latitude. Archaeological evidence of farming includes the recovery of macrobotanical remains of cultigens and isotopic chemistry of human bone. Since the 1990s, archaeologists have also hypothesized that the llama (Lama glama), a domesticated South American camelid, was also herded near the southern boundary of prehispanic farming. The remains of a wild congeneric camelid, the guanaco (Lama guanicoe), however, are common in archaeological sites throughout Mendoza Province. It is difficult to distinguish bones of the domestic llama from wild guanaco in terms of osteological morphology, and therefore, claims that llama were in geographic areas where guanaco were also present based on osteometric analysis alone remain equivocal. A recent study, for example, claimed that twenty-five percent of the camelid remains from the high elevation Andes site of Laguna del Diamante S4 were identified based on osteometric evidence as domestic llama, but guanaco are also a likely candidate since the two species overlap in size. We test the hypothesis that domesticated camelids occurred in prehispanic, southern Mendoza through analysis of ancient DNA. We generated whole mitochondrial genome datasets from 41 samples from southern Mendoza late Holocene archaeological sites, located between 450 and 3400 meters above sea level (masl). All camelid samples from those sites were identified as guanaco; thus, we have no evidence to support the hypothesis that the domestic llama occurred in prehispanic southern Mendoza.

In recent years, a number of methods have been used to measure the biodegradation of petroleum light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPL) at petroleum release sites, a process known as natural source zone depletion (NSZD). Most commonly, NSZD rates have been measured at sites with unconsolidated geology and relatively shallow groundwater (<50 ft. bgs, <15 m bgs). For this study, we have used two methods (1. carbon dioxide flux measured using carbon traps and 2. heat flux based on subsurface temperature gradients) to measure NSZD rates at a petroleum release site in Hawaii with basalt geology and deep groundwater (>300 ft. bgs, >100 m bgs). Both methods documented the occurrence of NSZD at the facility and the two methods yield estimates of the NSZD rate that agreed within a factor of 2 (4600 to 7400 gal/yr; 17,000 to 28,000 L/yr for the flux method and 8600 to 13,000 gal/yr; 33,000 to 49,000 L/yr for the temperature method). Soil gas samples collected directly above the water table and at shallower depths within the vadose zone indicated aerobic conditions throughout the vadose zone (oxygen >13%) and no detectable methane. These results indicate that NSZD occurs at this site through the direct aerobic biodegradation of LNAPL rather than the two-step process of anaerobic methanogenesis followed by methane oxidation at a shallow depth interval documented at other sites.

Heterolithic, boulder-containing, pebble-strewn surfaces occur along the lower slopes of Aeolis Mons ("Mt. Sharp") in Gale crater, Mars. They were observed in HiRISE images acquired from orbit prior to the landing of the Curiosity rover. The rover was used to investigate three of these units named Blackfoot, Brandberg, and Bimbe between sols 1099 and 1410. These unconsolidated units overlie the lower Murray formation that forms the base of Mt. Sharp, and consist of pebbles, cobbles and boulders. Blackfoot also overlies portions of the Stimson formation, which consists of eolian sandstone that is understood to significantly postdate the dominantly lacustrine deposition of the Murray formation. Blackfoot is elliptical in shape (62 × 26 m), while Brandberg is nearly circular (50 × 55 m), and Bimbe is irregular in shape, covering about ten times the area of the other two. The largest boulders are 1.5-2.5 m in size and are interpreted to be sandstones. As seen from orbit, some boulders are light-toned and others are dark-toned. Rover-based observations show that both have the same gray appearance from the ground and their apparently different albedos in orbital observations result from relatively flat sky-facing surfaces. Chemical observations show that two clasts of fine sandstone at Bimbe have similar compositions and morphologies to nine ChemCam targets observed early in the mission, near Yellowknife Bay, including the Bathurst Inlet outcrop, and to at least one target (Pyramid Hills, Sol 692) and possibly a cap rock unit just north of Hidden Valley, locations that are several kilometers apart in distance and tens of meters in elevation. These findings may suggest the earlier existence of draping strata, like the Stimson formation, that would have overlain the current surface from Bimbe to Yellowknife Bay. Compositionally these extinct strata could be related to the Siccar Point group to which the Stimson formation belongs. Dark, massive sandstone blocks at Bimbe are chemically distinct from blocks of similar morphology at Bradbury Rise, except for a single float block, Oscar (Sol 516). Conglomerates observed along a low, sinuous ridge at Bimbe consist of matrix and clasts with compositions similar to the Stimson formation, suggesting that stream beds likely existed nearly contemporaneously with the dunes that eventually formed the Stimson formation, or that they had the same source material. In either case, they represent a later pulse of fluvial activity relative to the lakes associated with the Murray formation. These three units may be local remnants of infilled impact craters (especially circular-shaped Brandberg), decayed buttes, patches of unconsolidated fluvial deposits, or residual mass-movement debris. Their incorporation of Stimson and Murray rocks, the lack of lithification, and appearance of being erosional remnants suggest that they record erosion and deposition events that post-date the exposure of the Stimson formation.
