The perinatal period is a time of significant adjustment for mothers, which may lead to alterations in mood that affect maternal mental health, which may also impact child development. The current article details the effectiveness of the addition of a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) and mental health training for nurses on the anxiety and depression screening scores of mothers enrolled in a home visitation program. For clients with elevated anxiety and depression scores, the percentages of those who were referred to and received mental health services increased after the program's addition of the PMHNP and mental health training. Implications for future research and practice include continued focus on maternal mental health with improved access to assessment and treatment for all clients within home visitation. This study assessed diabetes distress (DD) and glycemic control levels through three time periods during the COVID-19 pandemic in uninsured patients with diabetes. Diabetes Distress Screening Scales 2 and 17 were utilized to identify the prevalence of DD among uninsured patients during multiple stages of the COVID-19 pandemic at the Providing Access to Healthcare (PATH) diabetes clinic at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. For the 328 uninsured diabetic patients who were screened for DD at least once, the mean age was 46 years old with a majority being Black (55.5%), male (56.1%), and non-Hispanic (89.9%). Mean scores reflecting patients' level of DD initially increased in the first 6 months of the pandemic, from 2.86 to 3.44, and then decreased after 12 months of the COVID-19 pandemic to 3.09, while their mean hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) followed a similar pattern of initial increase (from 11.31 to 12.13) followed by a decline (to 10.79). Addressing patient concerns quickly through early interventions to provide alternative means of care through telehealth and accommodating safe pick-up of diabetes supplies and medications, including insulin, can reduce DD and contribute to better management of glycemic control. Understanding the potential direct correlation of DD with HbA1c in uninsured patients with diabetes is an important factor for clinicians when providing care to this vulnerable population.

BACKGROUND: Concern has been raised related to the rigor of DNP team projects due to the potential lack of individual opportunity for growth. However, team science, the scientific collaboration conducted by more than one individual in an interdependent fashion, is becoming standard practice for scientific inquiry and dissemination. DNP team projects provide an opportunity to demonstrate competencies related to collaboration, communication, organization, planning, reliability, accountability and acknowledgement of other opinions, expertise, and contributions. Faculty working with student teams may encounter challenges related to team dynamics and individual student evaluation. Thoughtful application of team science principles can assist in minimizing these challenges. METHOD: The purpose of this paper is to describe two school's combined experiences and lessons learned in application of team science to DNP team projects. CONCLUSION: When undertaken with an informed and organized approach, DNP team projects are an ideal strategy to enhance collaborative skills and position nurse leaders to positively impact health outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The use of an innovative approach for mental health interviews met unprecedented needs during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic for patients and staff at a community health clinic and provided nursing students with a telehealth activity that met patient care education requirements while practicing essential skills. METHOD: The nursing students and instructors worked collaboratively with the clinical team to call patients using an algorithm that incorporates screeners for depression, anxiety, and chronic disease distress. RESULTS: Reports during daily debriefings and feedback obtained from evaluations were summarized by faculty and used to improve the activity. These reports indicated the experience was beneficial to students and clinic staff. CONCLUSION: Providers were able to follow up on vulnerable patients more quickly, students were able to practice essential nursing skills during a time when safety concerns limited direct patient interaction, and patients continued to feel connected to health care providers during a global pandemic. ABSTRACT: The importance of teamwork in health care, the need for doctorally prepared advanced practice nurses, and the nationwide faculty shortage provided the impetus for an educational tool to synthesize the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) project. Clearly outlining the stages of the DNP project in a concise manner, the DNP project synthesis form aids learners and faculty in organization and documentation of planning, implementation, and evaluation of the project and serves as a one-stop resource when students are completing semesters. This article delineates why one school of nursing developed a project synthesis form for use across all DNP programs.

This article explores a new diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.)-disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD). Frequent comorbidities of DMDD include oppositional defiant disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. The evolution of DMDD and how this diagnostic category may remedy an overdiagnosis of pediatric bipolar disorder are discussed.

The changes in the criteria for diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder are of particular interest to psychiatric nurses. This article describes the changes and the new criteria.
