RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study explores how different post-processing methods affect the mechanical properties and degree of conversion of 3d-printed polyurethane aligners made from Tera Harz TC-85 resin. METHODS: Using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, the degree of conversion of liquid resin and post-processed materials was analyzed. This investigation focused on the effects of various post-curing environments (nitrogen vs. air) and rinsing protocols (centrifuge, ethanol, isopropanol, and isopropanol + water). The assessed mechanical properties were flexural modulus and hardness. RESULTS: The degree of conversion showed no significant variance across different groups, though the polymerization environment influenced the results, accounting for 24.0% of the variance. The flexural modulus varied considerably, depending on both the rinsing protocol and the polymerization environment. The standard protocol (centrifugation followed by nitrogen polymerization) exhibited the highest flexural modulus of 1881.22 MPa. Hardness testing revealed significant differences, with isopropanol treatments showing increased resistance to wear in comparison to the centrifuge and ethanol rinse treatments. CONCLUSIONS: This study conclusively demonstrates the adverse effects of oxygen on the polymerization process, underscoring the critical need for an oxygen-free environment to optimize material properties. Notably, the ethanol rinse followed by nitrogen polymerization protocol emerged as a viable alternative to the conventional centrifuge plus nitrogen method.

Objectives: To optimize the therapeutic usefulness of aligners, it is crucial to understand how their mechanical properties alter with time. Materials and methods: Specimens from four different brands, including Duran+, CA® Pro, Zendura A, and Zendura FLX, were produced for material testing of thermoplastic orthodontic aligners (TOA) using dimensions measuring 4mm x 10mm. Each brand's 24 samples were split into three groups as follows: G1 being thermoformed, G2 being thermoformed and underwent 500 thermocycles (simulating 7 days), and G3 being thermoformed and underwent 1000 thermocycles (simulating 14 days). Surface roughness, modulus of elasticity in bending, and spectrophotometry were used to assess the effect of aging on TOAs. Results: After 1000 thermocycles, Duran+ had the highest modulus of elasticity and differed statistically from all other groups. The intragroup comparison showed that only Duran+'s elastic modulus significantly changed after 1000 thermocycles in comparison with the control group. Surface roughness values (Ra), did not statistically differ among brands or thermocycling group measures. The change in chemical properties was not significant in any brand. Conclusion: One-layer PETG (Duran+) failed to demonstrate stability after in vitro aging, thus suggesting that clinicians should be aware of the change in mechanical properties when using one-layer PETG (Duran +) in a 2 weeks regime.

AIM: Data regarding different types of orthodontic brackets and ligation and various clinical and salivary findings are scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare clinical and salivary findings in patients with different types of fixed orthodontic appliances. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Decayed, missing and filled teeth index (DMFT) and plaque index, salivary flow rate, salivary pH and prevalence of white spot lesions were determined in 83 patients with different types of orthodontic brackets and ligation (metal passive self-ligating brackets, conventional metal brackets, mono-crystal brackets and polycrystalline active self-ligating brackets), before and six months after the beginning of fixed orthodontic treatment. The patients were recruited in a private dental office, in the period of two years. The group comprised 83 patients (mean age: 15.14 ± 1.66 years), including 52 women (mean age: 15.08 ± 1.68) and 31 men (15.24 ± 1.64). Statistical analysis was performed by use of dependent and independent samples t-test as well as one way ANOVA, Wilcoxon signed rank test and the Kruskal Wallis test. P-values below 0.05 (p<0.05) were considered significant. RESULTS: DMFT and salivary flow have shown a significant increase, while salivary pH has shown a significant decrease in the observed time interval, in all patients irrespective of type of brackets and ligation. Among patients with different bracket material, no significant differences were found in any of the observed parameters. CONCLUSION: Although salivary flow rate is increased in patients with fixed orthodontic appliances which can have caries-protective effect, DMFT also increases and salivary pH decreases six months after the beginning of the treatment independently of bracket material or ligation type. All patients should receive instructions for precise oral hygiene and dietary habits before the beginning of fixed orthodontic therapy and at every dental check-up.

OBJECTIVES: It is known from the existing literature that metal ions within orthodontic appliances are prone to corrosion due to the salivary and bacterial interplay in the oral cavity. The results from the most studies show that levels of salivary nickel and chromium do not increase after the installment of orthodontic appliances. MATERIAL AND METHODS: However, there are no studies on salivary levels of titanium, cobalt, copper and zinc in these patients. Salivary levels of nickel (Ni), titanium (Ti), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) were measured in 42 patients with ceramic brackets and in 42 patients with metal conventional brackets prior to insertion of orthodontic appliances and six months after insertion of orthodontic appliances by means of inductive coupled plasma/mass spectrometry. Statistical analysis was performed by use of Wilcoxon signed rank test and Mann Whitney test with level of significance set at 0.05. RESULTS: The results showed that salivary level of titanium increased significantly six months after installment of orthodontic appliances. Salivary level of chromium and zinc significantly decreased after installment of orthodontic appliances. There were no significant differences in salivary levels of nickel, titanium, chromium, copper, cobalt and zinc between the patients with metallic and those with ceramic brackets. CONCLUSION: We might conclude that the salivary level of titanium increased significantly six months after installment of orthodontic appliances unlike salivary levels of chromium and zinc which significantly decreased after installment of orthodontic appliances, regardless of bracket type which was used.

The aim of the study was to assess the influence of fixed orthodontic appliance on Streptococcus (S.) mutans and S. sobrinus counts in orthodontic patients with regard to their previous caries experience (Decayed, Missing and Filled Teeth (DMFT) index) during the first 12 weeks of orthodontic treatment. Twenty-two patients that satisfied inclusion criteria (healthy systemic and periodontal condition, avoidance of antibiotic therapy and antiseptic mouthwashes in the past three months) were included. All clinical measurements took place prior to and 12 weeks after fixed orthodontic appliance placement, in the following order: 1) stimulated saliva flow (SS); 2) Simplified Oral Hygiene Index (OHI-S); and 3) DMFT. The method of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to detect the presence of S. mutans and S. sobrinus at T1 and T2. T-test showed significant increase in DMFT index and SS between T1 and T2. Results also indicated significant improvement in OHI-S index. By use of the PCR method, S. mutans was detected in two patients at T1. At T2, two more patients had S. mutans, but the increase was not statistically significant. Using the same method, S. sobrinus was detected only in two patients at T2. In conclusion, fixed orthodontic appliances did not induce statistically significant changes in caries microflora even in the presence of enhanced oral hygiene habits.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the difference in the levels of Streptococcus mutans and S sobrinus in stimulated saliva in orthodontic patients with different bracket types (stainless steel and esthetic brackets) using polymerase chain reaction and cultivation method. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two patients, aged 13 to 30 years, were selected following these criteria: 1) orthodontic treatment indication, 2) systemic health, and 3) no tobacco and antibiotic consummation for three months prior to the commencement of the study. Patients were divided into two groups according to the bracket type; 16 patients formed the conventional bracket group (stainless steel brackets), and 16 patients formed the esthetic bracket group (plastic brackets). The levels of S mutans and S sobrinus in stimulated whole saliva samples were collected prior to fixed orthodontic appliance placement (T1) and 12 weeks after placement (T2), as were the Decayed, Missing, and Filled Surface Index (DMFS) and Oral Hygiene Index-Simplified (OHI-S). Mann-Whitney, Wilcoxon, and chi-square tests were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: Statistical analysis (chi-square test) showed no difference in S mutans and S sobrinus counts among patients with different brackets at either T1 or T2. There was no difference in total bacteria counts after fixed orthodontic appliance placement. CONCLUSION: The number of colony-forming units of S mutans and S sobrinus in stimulated saliva samples does not seem to be significantly different between patients with stainless steel brackets and patients with plastic brackets.
