PURPOSE: Symptoms are important components in determining asthma control and in the adjustment of treatment levels. However, clinical relevance of cough in severe asthma is not well-understood. This study aimed to evaluate the severity and association of cough with patient-reported outcomes (PROs) in patients with severe asthma. METHODS: This study analyzed cross-sectional data from the Korean Severe Asthma Registry. The severity of coughing and wheezing symptoms was assessed using a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) ranging from 0 to 100 for each symptom. Additionally, PROs included the Asthma Control Test (ACT), the Severe Asthma Questionnaire (SAQ), and the EuroQoL 5-Dimension (EQ-5D) index. Multivariate linear regression analysis was employed to explore the relationship between cough severity and other PRO scores. RESULTS: A total of 498 patients with severe asthma (age: 57.9 ± 13.1 years, females: 60.2%) were analyzed. The cough VAS score was higher than the wheeze score (median 30, [interquartile range 10-50] vs. 20 [0-50]; P < 0.001). Additionally, 22.5% of patients ranked in a higher tertile for cough severity compared to wheezing, while 18.5% ranked higher for wheezing severity than cough. Significant correlations were observed between cough and wheeze VAS scores (r = 0.61, P < 0.05) and between each symptom's VAS score and the SAQ (cough: r = -0.41, P < 0.001; wheeze: r = -0.52, P < 0.001), ACT scores (cough: r = -0.50, P < 0.001; wheeze: r = -0.63, P < 0.001) and EQ-5D index (cough: r = -0.40, P < 0.001; wheeze: r = -0.45, P < 0.001). In univariate regression analysis, the cough VAS score had weaker descriptive power (R2) values than the wheeze VAS score in relation to the PRO measures. Nevertheless, cough severity remained significantly associated with ACT, SAQ scores and EQ-5D index in multivariate analyses adjusted for wheeze severity and other confounders. CONCLUSION: Cough frequently presents as a severe symptom in patients with severe asthma and could have distinct impact on asthma control and quality of life.

Background: Exposure to allergens or irritants in the workplace may affect asthma control and the quality of life (QoL) of patients with asthma. Objective: To examine the prevalence and characteristics of work-related asthma (WRA) in adult patients with severe asthma. Methods: We analyzed data from the Korean Severe Asthma Registry (KoSAR), which is a nationwide multicenter observational study on severe asthma in Korea. Severe asthma was defined according to the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and the European Respiratory Society (ERS) guidelines. WRA was identified on the basis of asthma symptom aggravation at the workplace, as indicated by responses to a structured questionnaire. We compared the demographic and clinical characteristics and QoL between adult patients with severe asthma and WRA and those without WRA. Results: Among 364 patients with severe asthma who were employed at the time of enrollment, 65 (17.9%) had WRA. There were no significant differences in age, sex, obesity, or smoking history between the WRA and non-WRA groups. However, individuals with WRA exhibited a higher prevalence of anxiety (7.7% vs 2.4%, P = 0.046) and depression (12.3% vs 3.7%, P = 0.010) than those without. The levels of asthma control, lung function, and frequency of asthma exacerbations were similar between the two groups, but patients with WRA reported lower QoL, as determined by the Quality of Life Questionnaire for Adult Korean Asthmatics (56.6 ± 14.6 vs. 63.5 ± 13.9, P < 0.001). Conclusion: Patients with severe asthma and WRA are more likely to experience anxiety and depression and have lower QoL than those without WRA.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of high-dose inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) on chronic cough patients with elevated fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) levels. In a prospective study, adults with chronic cough and FeNO ≥ 25 ppb, without any other apparent etiology, received fluticasone furoate (200 mcg) for three weeks. Outcomes were evaluated using FeNO levels, cough severity, and Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ) before and after treatment. Of the fifty participants (average age: 58.4 years; 58% female), the treatment responder rate (≥ 1.3-point increase in LCQ) was 68%, with a significant improvement in cough and LCQ scores and FeNO levels post-treatment. However, improvements in cough did not significantly correlate with changes in FeNO levels. These findings support the guideline recommendations for a short-term ICS trial in adults with chronic cough and elevated FeNO levels, but the lack of correlations between FeNO levels and cough raises questions about their direct mechanistic link.

PURPOSE: Codeine is a narcotic antitussive often considered for managing patients with refractory or unexplained chronic cough. This study aimed to evaluate the proportion and characteristics of patients who responded to codeine treatment in real-world practice. METHODS: Data from the Korean Chronic Cough Registry, a multicenter prospective cohort study, were analyzed. Physicians assessed the response to codeine based on the timing and degree of improvement after treatment initiation. Follow-up assessments included the Leicester Cough Questionnaire and cough severity visual analog scale at six months. In a subset of subjects, objective cough frequency was evaluated following the initiation of codeine treatment. RESULTS: Of 305 patients, 124 (40.7%) responded to treatments based on anatomic diagnostic protocols, while 181 (59.3%) remained unexplained or refractory to etiological treatments. Fifty-one subjects (16.7%) were classified as codeine treatment responders (those showing a rapid and clear response), 57 (18.7%) as partial responders, and 62 (20.3%) as non-responders. Codeine responders showed rapid improvement in objective cough frequency and severity scores within a week of the treatment. At 6 months, responders showed significantly improved scores in cough scores, compared to non-responders. Several baseline parameters were associated with a more favorable treatment response, including older age, non-productive cough, and the absence of heartburn. CONCLUSIONS: Approximately 60% of chronic cough patients in specialist clinics may require antitussive drugs. While codeine benefits some, only a limited proportion (about 20%) of patients may experience rapid and significant improvement. This underscores the urgent need for new antitussive drugs to address these unmet clinical needs.

Allergen immunotherapy is regarded as the only disease-modifying treatment option for various allergic conditions, including allergic rhinitis and asthma. Among the routes of administration of allergens, sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) has gained clinical interest recently, and the prescription of SLIT is increasing among patients with allergies. After 30 years of SLIT use, numerous pieces of evidence supporting its efficacy, safety, and mechanism allows SLIT to be considered as an alternative option to subcutaneous immunotherapy. Based on the progressive development of SLIT, the current guideline from the Korean Academy of Asthma, Allergy, and Clinical Immunology aims to provide an expert opinion by allergy, pediatrics, and otorhinolaryngology specialists with an extensive literature review. This guideline addresses the use of SLIT, including 1) mechanisms of action, 2) appropriate patient selection for SLIT, 3) the currently available SLIT products in Korea, and 4) updated information on its efficacy and safety. This guideline will facilitate a better understanding of practical considerations for SLIT.

Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) is a causative treatment for various allergic diseases such as allergic rhinitis, allergic asthma, and bee venom allergy that induces tolerance to offending allergens. The need for uniform practice guidelines in AIT is continuously growing because of the increasing discovery of potential candidates for AIT and evolving interest in new therapeutic approaches. This guideline is an updated version of the Korean Academy of Asthma Allergy and Clinical Immunology recommendations for AIT published in 2010. This updated guideline proposes an expert opinion by allergy, pediatrics, and otorhinolaryngology specialists with an extensive literature review. The guideline deals with basic knowledge and methodological aspects of AIT, including mechanisms, clinical efficacy, patient selection, allergens extract selection, schedule and doses, management of adverse reactions, efficacy measurements, and special consideration in pediatrics. The guidelines for sublingual immunotherapy will be covered in detail in a separate article.

PURPOSE: The Korean Chronic Cough Registry study was initiated to characterize patients with chronic cough (CC) and investigate their outcomes in real-world clinical practice. This report aims to describe the baseline cohort profile and study protocols. METHODS: This multicenter, prospective observational cohort study included newly referred CC patients and those already being treated for refractory or unexplained chronic cough (RUCC). Cough status was assessed using a visual analog scale, the Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ), and the Cough Hypersensitivity Questionnaire (CHQ). RESULTS: A total of 610 patients (66.9% women; median age 59.0 years) were recruited from 18 centers, with 176 being RUCC patients (28.9%). The median age at CC onset was 50.1 years, and 94.4% had adult-onset CC (≥ 19 years). The median cough duration was 4 years. Compared to newly referred CC patients, RUCC patients had a longer cough duration (6.0 years vs. 3.0 years) but had fewer symptoms and signs suggesting asthma, rhinosinusitis, or gastroesophageal acid reflux disease. Subjects with RUCC had lower LCQ scores (10.3 ± 3.3 vs. 11.6 ± 3.6; P < 0.001) and higher CHQ scores (9.1 ± 3.9 vs. 8.4 ± 4.1; P = 0.024). There were no marked differences in the characteristics of cough between refractory chronic cough and unexplained chronic cough. CONCLUSIONS: Chronic cough typically develops in adulthood, lasting for years. Cough severity and quality of life impairment indicate the presence of unmet clinical needs and insufficient cough control in real-world clinical practice. Longitudinal follow-up is warranted to investigate the natural history and treatment outcomes.

Background: While tools exist for objective cough counting in clinical studies, there is no available tool for objective cough measurement in clinical practice. An artificial intelligence (AI)-based cough count system was recently developed that quantifies cough sounds collected through a smartphone application. In this prospective study, this AI-based cough algorithm was applied among real-world patients with an acute exacerbation of asthma. Methods: Patients with an acute asthma exacerbation recorded their cough sounds for 7 days (2 consecutive hours during awake time and 5 consecutive hours during sleep) using CoughyTM smartphone application. During the study period, subjects received systemic corticosteroids and bronchodilator to control asthma. Coughs collected by application were counted by both the AI algorithm and two human experts. Subjects also provided self-measured peak expiratory flow rate (PEFR) and completed other outcome assessments [e.g., cough symptom visual analogue scale (CS-VAS), awake frequency, salbutamol use] to investigate the correlation between cough and other parameters. Results: A total of 1,417.6 h of cough recordings were obtained from 24 asthmatics (median age =39 years). Cough counts by AI were strongly correlated with manual cough counts during sleep time (rho =0.908, P<0.001) and awake time (rho =0.847, P<0.001). Sleep time cough counts were moderately to strongly correlated with CS-VAS (rho =0.339, P<0.001), the frequency of waking up (rho =0.462, P<0.001), and salbutamol use at night (rho =0.243, P<0.001). Weak-to-moderate correlations were found between awake time cough counts and CS-VAS (rho =0.313, P<0.001), the degree of activity limitation (rho =0.169, P=0.005), and salbutamol use at awake time (rho =0.276, P<0.001). Neither awake time nor sleep time cough counts were significantly correlated with PEFR. Conclusions: The strong correlation between cough counts using the AI-based algorithm and human experts, and other indicators of patient health status provides evidence of the validity of this AI algorithm for use in asthma patients experiencing an acute exacerbation. Study findings suggest that CoughyTM could be a novel solution for objectively monitoring cough in a clinical setting.

Background: Severe asthma, compared with mild to moderate asthma, has a larger impact on the quality of life (QOL) of the affected patients and their families. These findings underscore the need for patient-reported outcomes that are specific to severe asthma. The Severe Asthma Questionnaire (SAQ) is a validated disease-specific questionnaire that addresses the impact of severe asthma on patients. The present study aimed to develop the Korean language version of the SAQ (SAQ-K), with the translation and linguistic validation. Methods: The development of SAQ-K was achieved through a process of forward translation, reconciliation, back translation, reconciliation, cognitive debriefing involving severe asthmatics, proofreading, and the final report. Results: Two medical personnel who were fluent in Korean and English independently translated the original English version of the SAQ into Korean. After incorporating these translations into a single reconciled version, two other bilingual personnel translated the Korean draft back into English. Discrepancies between the original form and the first Korean translation were then reviewed by the panel. The translated questionnaire was then tested in cognitive debriefing interviews with 15 severe asthma patients. Through this cognitive debriefing process, the second version was verified and finally proofread to check for spelling, grammar, layout, and formatting as the final version. Conclusions: We have generated the SAQ-K to enable clinicians and researchers to assess the health status of severe asthma patients in Korea.

Particulate matter (PM) is a major air pollutant that has led to global health concerns and can cause and exacerbate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). We asked patients with COPD to complete a detailed questionnaire about their lifestyle practices to reduce PM2.5 exposure and analyzed the relationship between ambient PM2.5 concentrations and lifestyle practices. We prospectively enrolled 104 COPD patients from four hospitals in different areas of Korea. They completed detailed questionnaires twice (at enrollment and the end of the study) and Internet of Things-based sensors were installed in their homes to continuously measure PM2.5 for 1 year. The relationship between PM2.5 concentrations, lifestyle practices, and COPD exacerbations were analyzed in each season. The PM2.5 concentration was higher outdoors than indoors in all seasons except summer, and the difference was largest in winter. The six lifestyle practices that significantly lowered the annual indoor PM2.5 concentration compared with the outdoors. The higher the economic status and educational level of patients, the lower the indoor PM2.5 concentration. Some lifestyle practices were associated with reduced small airway resistance, presented as R5-R20 determined by impulse oscillometry, and scores of the St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire. Some lifestyle practices are associated with reduced indoor PM2.5 concentrations and can even affect clinical outcomes, including small airway resistance and quality of life of COPD patients.

Allergic rhinitis is the most common chronic disease worldwide. Various upper airway symptoms lower quality of life, and due to the recurrent symptoms, multiple treatments are usually attempted rather than one definitive treatment. There are alternatives to medical (medication-based) and non-medical treatments. A guideline is needed to understand allergic rhinitis and develop an appropriate treatment plan. We have developed guidelines for medical treatment based on previous reports. The current guidelines herein are associated with the "KAAACI Evidence-Based Guidelines for Allergic Rhinitis in Korea, Part 1: Update in pharmacotherapy" in which we aimed to provide evidence-based recommendations for the medical treatment of allergic rhinitis. Part 2 focuses on non-pharmacological management, including allergen-specific immunotherapy, subcutaneous or sublingual immunotherapy, nasal saline irrigation, environmental management strategies, companion animal management, and nasal turbinate surgery. The evidence to support the treatment efficacy, safety, and selection has been systematically reviewed. However, larger controlled studies are needed to elevate the level of evidence to select rational non-medical therapeutic options for patients with allergic rhinitis.

PURPOSE: Chronic cough (CC) is associated with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) impairment. However, the determinants of HRQoL are under-investigated. METHODS: Patients aged 19-80 years with CC were prospectively recruited from 10 referral clinics. Comparisons were made with age- and sex-matched controls (1:4 ratio) selected from a Korean general population survey database; 1) a group without current cough (non-cough controls) and 2) another group without major chronic illnesses (healthy controls). HRQoL was assessed using the EuroQoL 5-dimension (EQ-5D) index. In CC patients, cough-specific patient-reported outcomes (PROs) were additionally measured. Cross-sectional analyses were performed to evaluate demographic and clinical parameters associated with the EQ-5D index of CC patients. RESULTS: A total of 200 CC patients (137 newly referred with CC and 63 refractory or unexplained CC [RUCC] patients), 800 non-cough controls, and 799 healthy controls were analyzed. The EQ-5D index of CC patients was significantly lower than that of non-cough controls or healthy controls (0.82 ± 0.14 vs 0.92 ± 0.14/0.96 ± 0.08; P < 0.001, respectively). The index was also associated with older age (≥ 60 years), female sex, and comorbidities such as asthma or depression. Among the patients with CC, the index was significantly lower in patients with RUCC than in those with newly referred CC, being treated with codeine or cough neuromodulators, or with cough-related fatigue. In Spearman analyses, the EQ-5D index correlated with cough-specific quality of life and cough severity scores, not with throat sensation or cough trigger scores. CONCLUSIONS: The HRQoL impairment of CC patients was associated with older age, female sex, and comorbidities but it was also affected by cough severity, complications, treatments, and treatment responses. Longitudinal studies are warranted to further understand and improve the HRQoL of CC patients.

Th2 inflammation is associated with various characteristics of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). In this study, we analyzed the COPD exacerbation risk associated with serum levels of interleukin (IL)-25/thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) and eosinophils. We studied the KOCOSS cohort, a multicenter COPD cohort created by 54 medical centers in South Korea. We extracted data collected between April 2012 and August 2020. We measured serum levels of TSLP and IL-25 in those who agreed to provide blood, and assessed exacerbation risk according to each. In all, 562 patients were enrolled. The IL-25-high group had a lower St. George's Respiratory Questionnaire score than others, and the TSLP-high group had a poorer exercise capacity than the TSLP-low group. There were no significant differences in the forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), the levels of Th2 inflammatory biomarkers, or the exacerbation histories between the two groups. The 3-year decline in FEV1 was not significantly affected by IL-25 or TSLP levels. In terms of 1-year exacerbation risk, individuals in the IL-25-high group were at lower risk for moderate-to-severe exacerbation than others. A high TSLP level was associated with a lower risk of severe exacerbation but only in the eosinophil-low group. Serum levels of IL-25 are negatively correlated with moderate-to-severe exacerbation risk in this cohort. A negative correlation between severe exacerbation risk and TSLP level was apparent only in the eosinophil-low group.

The prevalence of allergic rhinitis (AR) and the socioeconomic burden associated with the medical cost and quality of life (QOL) of AR have progressively increased. Therefore, practical guidelines for the appropriate management of AR need to be developed based on scientific evidence while considering the real-world environment, values, and preferences of patients and physicians. The Korean Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Clinical Immunology revised clinical guidelines of AR to address key clinical questions of the management of AR. Part 1 of the revised guideline covers the pharmacological management of patients with AR in Korea. Through a meta-analysis and systematic review, we made 4 recommendations for AR pharmacotherapy, including intranasal corticosteroid (INCS)/intranasal antihistamine (INAH) combination therapy, oral antihistamine/INCS combination therapy, leukotriene receptor antagonist treatment in AR patients with asthma, and prophylactic treatment for patients with pollen-induced AR. However, all recommendations are conditional because of the low or very low evidence of certainty. Well-designed and strictly executed randomized controlled trials are needed to measure and report appropriate outcomes.

Rationale: Artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted diagnosis imparts high accuracy to chest radiography (CXR) interpretation; however, its benefit for nonradiologist physicians in detecting lung lesions on CXR remains unclear. Objectives: To investigate whether AI assistance improves the diagnostic performance of physicians for CXR interpretation and affects their clinical decisions in clinical practice. Methods: We randomly allocated eligible patients who visited an outpatient clinic to the intervention (with AI-assisted interpretation) and control (without AI-assisted interpretation) groups. Lung lesions on CXR were recorded by seven nonradiologists with or without AI assistance. The reference standard for lung lesions was established by three radiologists. The primary and secondary endpoints were the physicians' diagnostic accuracy and clinical decision, respectively. Results: Between October 2020 and May 2021, 162 and 161 patients were assigned to the intervention and control groups, respectively. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was significantly larger in the intervention group than in the control group for the CXR level (0.840 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.778-0.903] vs. 0.718 [95% CI, 0.640-0.796]; P = 0.017) and lung lesion level (0.800 [95% CI, 0.740-0.861] vs. 0.677 [95% CI, 0.605-0.750]; P = 0.011). The intervention group had higher sensitivity in terms of both CXR and lung lesion level and a lower false referral rate for the lung lesion level. AI-assisted CXR interpretation did not affect the physicians' clinical decisions. Conclusions: AI-assisted CXR interpretation improves the diagnostic performance of nonradiologist physicians in detecting abnormal lung findings. Background: Component resolved diagnostics (CRD) in dog and cat allergy is not sufficiently investigated, especially regarding new components such as Can f 4, Can f 6, and Fel d 7. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential role of CRD with new components in predicting allergic symptoms on dog and cat exposure. Methods: Among 552 Korean adults who participated in a pet exhibition and completed questionnaires regarding exposure to dog or cat and allergic symptoms, 522 were venipunctured for measurement of IgE and IgG4 antibody concentration against dog and cat dander extract and underwent skin prick test (SPT). In 238 individuals who were sensitized for both dog and cat dander extract, the dog IgE components (Can f 1-6) and the cat components (Fel d 1/2/4/7) were analyzed. Results: An increasing number of sensitizing components was associated with the likelihood of having any allergic symptoms (P < 0.001 for dog and P < 0.01 for cat), and those of asthma (P < 0.01 for dog and P < 0.05 for cat) and rhinoconjunctivitis (P < 0.001 for dog and P < 0.05 for cat). Pairwise correlation of IgE levels was r = 0.56 (P < 0.001) for Can f 6 and Fel d 4, r = 0.74 (P < 0.001) for Can f 1 and Fel d 7 and r = 0.84 (P < 0.001) for Can f 3 and Fel d 2. Conclusions: Polysensitization to dog and cat allergen components is associated with high likelihood of having allergic symptoms during exposure to dogs and cats. Cross-reactivity between dog and cat allergen components is also identified. CRD has a potential in fine-tuning prediction for allergic symptoms on dog and cat exposure.

Although asthma is a common chronic airway disease that responds well to anti-inflammatory agents, some patients with asthma are unresponsive to conventional treatment. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have therapeutic potential for the treatment of inflammatory diseases owing to their immunomodulatory properties. However, the target cells of MSCs are not yet clearly known. This study aimed to determine the effect of human umbilical cord-derived MSCs (hUC-MSCs) on asthmatic lungs by modulating innate immune cells and effector T cells using a murine asthmatic model. Intravenously administered hUC-MSCs reduced airway resistance, mucus production, and inflammation in the murine asthma model. hUC-MSCs attenuated not only T helper (Th) 2 cells and Th17 cells but also augmented regulatory T cells (Tregs). As for innate lymphoid cells (ILC), hUC-MSCs effectively suppressed ILC2s by downregulating master regulators of ILC2s, such as Gata3 and Tcf7. Finally, regarding lung macrophages, hUC-MSCs reduced the total number of macrophages, particularly the proportion of the enhanced monocyte-derived macrophage population. In a closer examination of monocyte-derived macrophages, hUC-MSCs reduced the M2a and M2c populations. In conclusion, hUC-MSCs can be considered as a potential anti- asthmatic treatment given their therapeutic effect on the asthmatic airway inflammation in a murine asthma model by modulating innate immune cells, such as ILC2s, M2a, and M2c macrophages, as well as affecting Tregs and effector T cells.

In recent decades, the concept of severe asthma has evolved from an umbrella term encompassing patients with high-intensity treatment needs to a clinical syndrome with heterogeneous, albeit distinct, pathophysiological processes. Biased and unbiased cluster approaches have been used to identify several clinical phenotypes. In parallel, cellular and molecular approaches allow for the development of biological therapies, especially targeting type 2 (T2) cytokine pathways. Although T2-biologics have significantly improved clinical outcomes for patients with severe asthma in real-world practice, questions on the proper use of biologics remain open. Furthermore, a subset of severe asthma patients remains poorly controlled. The unmet needs require a new approach. The "treatable traits" concept has been suggested to address a diversity of pathophysiological factors in severe asthma and overcome the limitations of existing treatment strategies. With a tailored therapy that targets the treatable traits in individual patients, better personalized medical care and outcomes should be achieved.

BACKGROUND: Recent progress in chronic cough management includes controlling cough triggers and hypersensitivity using antitussives. Therefore, we investigated the effects and safety outcomes of antitussives, codeine and levodropropizine, in patients with chronic cough. METHODS: We conducted an open-label, randomized comparative trial with newly referred patients with chronic cough. Patients were orally administered codeine (60 mg/day) and levodropropizine (180 mg/day) for 2 weeks. Cough severity, including the visual analog scale (VAS), Cough Symptom Score (CSS), Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ), and safety for each treatment were assessed. The primary outcome was VAS score changes before and after 2 weeks of treatment. RESULTS: Among the 88 participants, 45 and 43 in the codeine and levodropropizine groups, respectively, were included in the analysis. Changes in the VAS score were higher in the codeine group than in the levodropropizine group (35.11 ± 20.74 vs. 19.77 ± 24.83, P = 0.002). Patients administered codeine also had improved CSS (2.96 ± 2.35 vs. 1.26 ± 1.89, P < 0.001) and LCQ (3.28 ± 3.36 vs. 1.61 ± 3.53, P = 0.025) than those administered levodropropizine. Treatment-related adverse events, including drowsiness, constipation, and headaches, were more frequent in the codeine group than in the levodropropizine group. However, no significant differences existed in the adverse events leading to discontinuation. CONCLUSION: Codeine is an effective and generally well-tolerated antitussive for chronic cough. However, it may induce side effects in some patients. Individual responses and adverse events should be carefully monitored when codeine is used to treat chronic cough.
