RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of horse riding simulator on upper extremity skills, trunk control and functionality in cerebral palsy (CP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This randomized controlled trial included total 32 CP, 16 in horse riding simulator group (HRSG) and 16 in control group (CG). ABILHAND-Kids, Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test (JTHFT), Gross Motor Function Measurement-sitting dimension (GMFM-B), Trunk Control Measurement Scale (TCMS), Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI) were evaluated before and after procedure. RESULTS: It was observed that there were improvements in both groups for ABILHAND-Kids scores after intervention, but the change in HRSG was significantly higher (p < 0.001). For all parameters of JTHFT (except writing dominant, non-dominant, turning cards-dominant), there was a significant difference between groups in favor of HRSG (p < 0.001-0.002). There was no change in GMFM-B values with intervention for both groups (p > 0.05). There were significant changes in favor of HRSG group in terms TCMS-Total (p = 0.003). There were significant changes in HRSG compared to CG for PEDI (pPEDI-Self-care<0.001, pPEDI-Mobility<0.001, pPEDI-Social function=0.016, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: It has been found that HRS in addition to conventional physiotherapy have positive effects on upper extremity skills, trunk control and functional abilities in daily life in the rehabilitation process of CP.The study protocol is registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (Identifier: NCT05518370).


Horse riding simulator (HRS) in addition to the routine physiotherapy is an effective method to improve upper extremity skills in children with CP.HRS may be an effective method to improve functional abilities of the children with Cerebral Palsy (CP).HRS is suitable for indoor use and has positive therapeutic effects on children with CP.The type and difficulty of the movements can be programmed gradually with HRS.

Objective: The present study was conducted to evaluate the effects of video-based exercises added to conventional physiotherapy (CPT) on upper extremity functionality, selective motor control, and proprioception in individuals with unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP). Materials and Methods: Thirty patients with UCP were randomized into two groups: the intervention group (15 individuals with a mean age of 9.2 ± 3.8 years) and the control group (15 individuals with a mean age of 8.3 ± 4.1 years). The intervention group received 8 weeks of video-based exercises, and the control group received 8 weeks of conventional physiotherapy. Upper extremity functional abilities, upper extremity selective motor control, proprioception, and entertainment levels were evaluated before and after the intervention for all groups. Results: While a significant change was observed in the mean scores of the ABILHAND-Kids, Selective Control of the Upper Extremity Scale right-left scores, shoulder flexion, shoulder abduction, and elbow flexion proprioception angles after the video-based exercises in the intervention group (P < 0.05), a significant change was observed only in the 60-degree flexion angle in the control group (P = 0.001). In the comparison between the groups, there were significant differences in post-intervention value only in shoulder flexion and abduction angles, whereas there was no difference between the groups in elbow flexion angles (P > 0.05). Conclusion: Incorporating video-based exercises into the upper extremity rehabilitation processes of individuals with UCP is beneficial in terms of upper extremity functionality, selective motor control, and proprioception.

AIM: The aim of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of the Sitting Assessment Scale (SAS) in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP). METHODS: The study included 34 individuals with a diagnosis of spastic CP. Individuals were evaluated with the Gross Motor Function Classification System and the Manual Ability Classification System. SAS and Trunk Control Measurement Scale (TCMS) were applied to the participants. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was calculated to determine the intraobserver and interobserver reliability of the scale scored by three different physiotherapists at two different time intervals. Internal consistency was calculated with Cronbach's ⍺ coefficient. The fit between SAS and TCMS for criterion-dependent validity was evaluated using Pearson Correlation Analysis. RESULTS: According to the GMFCS level, 79.41% of the children were mildly (Level I-II), 14.71% were moderately affected (level III), and 5.88% were severely affected (level IV). Intra > observer and interobserver reliability values of SAS were extremely high (ICCinterrater > 0.923, ICCintrarater > 0.930). It was observed that the internal consistency of SAS had high values (Cronbach ⍺test > 0.822, Cronbach ⍺retest > 0.804). For the criterion-dependent reliability; positive medium correlations found between SAS with Total TCMS Static Sitting Balance (r = 0.579, p < 0.001), with TCMS Selective Movement Control (r = 0.597, p < 0.001), with TCMS Dynamic Reaching (r = 0.609, p < 0.001), and with TCMS Total (r = 0.619, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: SAS was found to have high validity and reliability in children with CP. In addition, the test-retest reliability of the scale was also high. SAS is a practical tool that can be used to assess sitting balance in children with CP.

PURPOSE: This descriptive, correlational study examined the relationship between solution-focused communication skills and perceived level of social support for parents of children with developmental disabilities. METHOD: One hundred and sixty one parents of children with developmental disabilities completed a researcher developed personal information form, the Solution Focality in Communication Scale, and the Revised Parental Social Support Scale. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, in independent groups, t tests, and correlation tests. RESULTS: Findings included a positive correlation between the Solution Focality in Communication Scale and the perceived level of social support of the Revised Parental Social Support Scale and the perceived social support satisfaction level sub-dimensions (p < .001). CONCLUSION: This descriptive study found a correlation between the level of solution-focused communication skills reported by parents of children with developmental disabilities, and the parent's improved perceptions of social support. In addition, parents reported increased satisfaction with the social support they had received as their solution-focused communication skills improved.

AIM: This study aims to examine the effect of motor imagery (MI) training on MI abilities, functional mobility, and lower extremity muscle activity in children with unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP). METHOD: 34 UCP and 17 typically developing participants were included. UCP was randomised into 2 groups as UCP MI and UCP control. Participants typically developing were included for baseline comparisons. UCP MI group received 8 weeks of physiotherapy and MI training, the UCP control group 8 weeks of physiotherapy training. The MI abilities, functional mobility, and lower extremity muscle activation were assessed in all groups. RESULTS: It was found that MI training made a significant difference in favour of the UCP MI group in terms of Movement Imagery Questionnaire-For Children (MIQ-C), mental chronometry, functional mobility, and resting muscle activation (p < 0.05). There was no such significant change in the UCP control group. CONCLUSION: This current approach in UCP is a feasible method, beneficial to include it in the rehabilitation process.

AIM: The aim of this study was to examine the desire of the parents who had a chronically disabled child to have other children and to investigate the effect of having a disabled child on the relationship of the parents. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The families of 145 chronically disabled children were included in the study. After the sociodemographic information belonging to the child and family were obtained, the prepared questionnaire form was used to interrogate if the parents lived together, the number of children in the family, if they wished to have other children and the relation of the disabled child with the household. Ethics committee approval was obtained from Dokuz Eylül University (date: 18.10.2012, decision number, 2012/34-13). The data obtained in the study were expressed as figures and percentages. RESULTS: While 91.7% of the parents continued their relationship, 2.8% were divorced and 1.4% were left by their spouses. The rate of the parents who did not wish to have (or did not have) other children after a disabled child was found to be 65.2%. The major reason for the families not to wish to have other children was found to be the fact that they thought they could not spare enough time for their disabled child. While 35.1% of the parents stated that clemped together more tightly, 35.2% stated that their concerns about the future increased further. Fifty eight percent of the parents stated that social relations and community involvements were not affected, whereas others stated that they were affected in different ways. CONCLUSIONS: Although the relationship between the parents was not affected to a great extent in families who had chronically disabled children, it was found that parents intensively experienced concern for the future. It was found that this also affected the desire of the parents who had a chronically disabled child to have other children with the concern that the child will be disabled.
