RESUMEN

In pot trial, dried ground weed leaves of Cynodon dactylon, Datura stramonium, Eichhomia crassipes, Emex spinosus, Ricinus communis and Sisymbrium irio were mixed with soil at the rate of 1, 3, 5 and 10 g/kg soil and compared their nematicidal potential with carbofuran as a standard against the root-knot nematode, M. incognita infecting tomato. In addition, their effects on growth rate of tomato plants were also investigated. The results showed that M. incognita populations in the soil and root galling were significantly suppressed when the dried leaves of the tested weeds at all rates were allowed to decompose in the soil. All amendments exhibited varying degree of reduction compared to control. The highest reduction was noticeable with the plants grown in Sisymbrium irio amended soil followed by Datura stramonium and Emex spinosus. In addition, employing high rate of the tested weeds gave higher activity in suppressing the nematode both in the soil and in tomato roots than using low rate. The data also indicated that all amendments at low rates significantly increased growth indices of tomato over control treatment, except Cynodon dactylon and Emex spinosus which decreased it, particularly in the shoot system. On the other hand, their high rates showed phytotoxic effects. These weed species may offer considerable promise as soil amendments for control of root-knot nematode, M. incognita.

RESUMEN

Two segatane diterpenoids containing a bicyclic [4,3,1] ring system were isolated, together with 11 known diterpenoids, four segetanes, five jatrophanes and two paralianes, from the aerial parts of Euphorbia paralias. The structures of the new compounds were established by spectroscopic means, including by 2D NMR and CD spectroscopic analyses. The antifeedant and antiviral activities of the isolated compounds are also described.

RESUMEN

Some conventional and experimental anticancer drugs were tested for their effect on Concanavalin A (Con A)-induced Transforming Growth Factor-beta (TGF-beta) release from BALB/c splenocytes, lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced TGF-beta release from Nude mouse splenocytes and BALB/c peritoneal exudate cells stimulated by LPS in vitro. When 5 x 10(6) BALB/c and Nude mouse splenocytes/ml stimulated with 1 microgram/ml Con A, 50ng/ml LPS respectively, and 5 x 10(6)/ml peritoneal exudate cells stimulated with 50ng/ml LPS were incubated with various non-cytotoxic concentrations of the vinca alkaloid Vincristine, there was an inhibition of the release of TGF-beta in culture supernatants of both BALB/c splenocytes and peritoneal exudate cells. But, in Nude mouse Vincristine did not alter the release of TGF-beta. The antitumour antibiotic Bleomycin, the immunoactive peptide FK565 and the immunosuppressive agent Cyclosporin A (CsA) were found to have no effect on the release of TGF-beta from all culture supernatants.

RESUMEN

Qualitative determination of C-RP in semen and serum of men with and without prostatitis showed that, the protein is present mostly in semen only in cases with prostatitis and with a significantly higher percentage incidence in the infertile than the fertile.
