RESUMEN

Study of 35 days was conducted to evaluate citric acid (CA) as an additive in poultry broiler feed with lower mineral content of calcium (Ca) and total phosphorus (TP) in commercial broiler poultry birds for its effect on growth, nutrient utilization, carcass characteristics, and economics. Vancobb-400 strain day old broiler chicks were divided into four main treatment groups T0, T1, T2, and T3. Treatment groups were further divided into eight replicates with ten chicks in each. T0 served as control, given standard corn-soy flakes-based ration (Pre-starter %: Crude protein (CP)-23, Ca-1.00, TP-0.70; Starter %: CP-22, Ca-1.10, TP-0.72, and Finisher %: CP-20, Ca-0.99, TP-0.70). Treatment T1 served as positive control with added 0.5% CA (Pre-starter %: CP-23, Ca-1.00, TP-0.70; Starter %: CP-22, Ca-1.10, TP-0.72 and Finisher %: CP-20, Ca-0.99, TP-0.70). Treatment T2 was given feed containing 0.5% CA with low Ca and TP content (Pre-starter %: CP-23, Ca-0.90, TP-0.66; Starter %: CP-22, Ca-0.99, TP-0.71 and Finisher %: CP-20, Ca-0.90, TP-0.69), whereas treatment T3 was given feed containing 0.5% CA with moderately low Ca and TP content (Pre-starter %: CP-23, Ca-0.80, TP-0.65; Starter %: CP-22, Ca-0.88, TP-0.70 and Finisher %: CP-20, Ca-0.79, TP-0.68). Birds offered moderately low Ca and TP with 0.5% CA addition, exhibited higher growth rate (P < 0.05), better nutrient utilization with positive influence on dressing percentage and forequarters weight. Economics of broiler feeding revealed that 0.5% CA supplementation fetched highest gross return above feed cost in broiler birds offered feed with moderately low Ca and TP content whereas lowest profit was recorded in feed with low content of Ca and TP. In conclusion, supplementation of 0.5% CA in feed with low and moderately low Ca and TP content positively influenced overall growth, and carcass characteristics. Economics of broiler feeding with moderately low Ca and TP content revealed highest profit with CA (0.5%) supplementation.

A study was conducted on broiler birds for 42 days to determine the effect of feeding azolla along with direct-fed microbial (DFM) on growth performance, nutrient utilization, biochemical parameters and carcass characteristics. A total of 360-day-old male broiler chicks were divided into 3 groups and 12 replicates with 10 chicks per replicate, according to complete randomized block design. One group was fed a diet containing 2.5% azolla (A) and another was fed a diet containing 2.5% azolla, with direct-fed microbial (A + DFM), viz. L. plantarum and L. rhamnosus, at the concentration of 13.4 × 108 and 1.52 × 108 CFU per mL, respectively, mixed in the daily quota of feed. The control group (CON) was fed a basal diet without azolla and DFM. Azolla fed alone and with DFM did not affect growth performance and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of birds during pre-starter and starter phase; however, significantly (P < 0.05) lower weight gain and higher FCR were observed during finisher period, resulting in an impaired overall FCR. Decreased (P < 0.05) plasma cholesterol and increased (P < 0.05) tibial calcium content were observed in birds fed azolla with DFM. The highest value (P < 0.05) of carcass characteristics like gizzard weight, breast muscle yield and lower meat pH were recorded in the birds fed azolla in combination with DFM, followed by birds fed azolla alone. In conclusion, azolla feeding at 2.5% level shows positive effect on breast muscle yield and gizzard weight of broiler which can be enhanced upon adding DFM to azolla-based diet.

Macrotyloma uniflorum (Lam.) Verdc. (family Fabaceae) is traditionally important pulse used for kidney stone degradation, cold,cough, asthma and in bronchial issues. It is well reported for the antilithiatic activity and nutritional profiling but no attempt has been made to find out the mechanism and nutrient responsible for the activity in its seed decoction. Therefore, lead high altitude variety responsible for the highest nutrient content and antilithiatic activity was selected for the study. Boiled spray dried extract (M1), lead fractionation (Spray dried residual water fraction: M2), and crude powder extract (M3) were nutritionally profiled using proximate composition analysis, Atomic absorption spectroscopy (minerals and trace elements), Ion exchange chromatography (carbohydrate analysis) and NMR spectroscopy (polar and non polar metabolite analysis). These extracts were also screened for the antilithiatic activity and found significantly important. M1 showed more activity than M3. Further, boiled extract was fractionated with different polarity of solvents (hexane, chloroform, n-butanol, residual water extract). All fractions and reference standard (cystone) were screened for the antilithiatic activity. M2 showed highest activity followed by ethyl acteate while hexane and chloroform did not show any activity in comparison to standards. Thus, lead fraction and market reference standard (cystone) were validated for the presence of nutritional components. Moreover, the selected nutritional components were individually and in combinations screened for the activity which revealed that kidney stone degradation was due to the synergetic action of components than the individual. The results clearly pave a way that Macrotyloma uniflorum is best for combating with malnutrition and kidney stone related problems.
