Nowadays, nanomaterials enter high numbers of daily used products and drug manufacture. A nanocomposite of vitamins C (VC) and vitamin E (VE) with chitosan as a vehicle and protector was used in a comparative eight-week feeding study, Nile tilapia weighing 31.2 ± 0.36 g distributed in seven groups and fed (G1) basal diet, (G2) bulk VC, (G3) VC- nanoparticles (NPs), (G4) bulk VE, (G5) VE-NPs, bulk VCE (G6), and (G7) VC plus VE (VCE)-NPs, respectively. The Nile tilapia-fed nanocomposite vitamins had significantly higher growth performance compared to the control; VCE-NPs had the superiority among tested supplementations where total weight gain (63.6 g), daily weight gain (1.13 g), relative growth rate (206.1%) with lower feed conversion rate (1.6) and insignificant feed intake (101.5 g). Overall, the level of liver enzymes was significantly decreased in fish serum after eight-week nanocomposite supplementation, and dietary VCE-NPs caused a significant reduction of serum AST (18.45 IU/L) and ALT (14.77 IU/L) compared to the control 25.5 IU/L and 17.6 IU/L, respectively. Fish fed dietary VCE-NPs, VC-NPs, and VE-NPs had significant enhancement of RBCs 4.2 × 106/µL, 3.8 × 106/µL, and 3.55 × 106/µL; WBCs 46.15 × 103, 42.9 × 103, and 44 × 103/µL, respectively, Also TP was significantly higher 6.38 g/dL in VCE-NPs group compared to the control and the other treatments. Over all, the dietary nanocomposite vitamins boost the innate immunity of the experimental Nile tilapia, the oxidative burst activity (OBA), phagocytic activity (PA), phagocytic index (PI), and serum antibacterial (SAA) were significantly increased compared to those received bulk vitamins and the control. The activity of antioxidant biomarkers in fish serum including glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), glutathione reductase (GR), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) showed a rise in the serum of Nile tilapia received nano- and bulk-form of VC and VCE compared to the control and both forms of VE. Furthermore, the level of malondialdehyde (MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) were significantly increased in the fish serum following the trend of antioxidants enzymes. In conclusion, a dietary nanocomposite of vitamin C and vitamin E enhanced Nile tilapia's growth performance and feed utilization. It could also improve health status and immune response. The values of antioxidant biomarkers indicated that the nanocomposite could help the fish body scavenge the generated reactive oxidative species (ROS).

This study investigated the benefits of yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and/or garlic, Allium sativum supplementation in diets of Nile tilapia with regard to growth, antioxidant status, hepatic and intestinal histoarchitecture, expression of growth- and immune-related genes, and resistance to Aeromonas sobria infection. Fish (with an initial weight of 9.43 ± 0.08 g) were allocated to twelve hapas, organized into four triplicate treatment groups defined as control (no supplementation), yeast (4 g/kg diet), garlic (30 g/kg diet), and a mixture of both. This trial continued over a 60-day feeding period. Results revealed that combined treatment (yeast + garlic) demonstrated the most promising outcomes regarding growth, with significantly higher final body weights, weight gains, and specific growth rates compared to other groups. Moreover, this combination enhanced hepatic antioxidant status, as evidenced by elevated levels of reduced glutathione and activities of catalase and superoxide dismutase enzymes, reflecting improved defense against oxidative stress. Histological assessments of the livers and intestines demonstrated structural enhancements in yeast and garlic treatments, suggesting improvements in organ health. In comparison to the control, the gene expression analyses unveiled increased expression of growth-related (igf-1 and ghr1) and immune-related (il-10, lyz, and hep) genes in the test groups, indicating a possible reinforcement of the growth and immune responses. The combined treatment also showed the highest resistance to A. sobria infection, as evidenced by improved survival rates and lower mortality compared with the other groups. These findings highlight the benefits of a combination of both yeast and garlic as a dietary supplementation regimen. In conclusion, this study suggests that the combined treatment regimen could be considered an effective strategy to promote the health and productivity of Nile tilapia under production conditions.

Yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, has been utilized as a probiotic in aqua-feeds to promote growth and alleviate the stress in aquatic animals. On the other hand, cadmium (Cd) toxicity causes serious retardation of growth and welfare status of aquatic animals. The present study was conducted to evaluate the protective role of dietary yeast in mitigating the waterborne Cd toxicity effects on the growth, haemato-biochemical, stress biomarkers, and histopathological investigations of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata L.). In a 3 × 3 factorial design, the acclimated fish (20-24 g) were randomly distributed into nine treatments in triplicates where they were fed on 0.0% (control), 0.5%, and 1.0% of yeast along with exposure to 0.0, 1.0, and 2.0 mg Cd/L for 60 days. All growth parameters and mRNA expressions of IGF-1 and GH genes as well as haematological parameters were markedly increased with the increase of dietary yeast levels; meanwhile these variables were significantly retarded with Cd exposure. Contradictory effects on the above-mentioned variables were observed with Cd toxicity. In contrast, blood cortisol, glucose, total cholesterol, and triglyceride, lactate dehydrogenase, alanine transaminase, aspartate transaminase, alkaline phosphatase, in addition to DNA fragments % were noticeably increased with Cd toxicity especially at the treatment of 2.0 mg Cd/L, while decreasing with increasing dietary yeast levels. Compared with the control fish group, Cd concentrations in the gill, liver, and muscle tissues of gilthead seabream were higher in Cd-exposed treatments, especially at the treatment of 2.0 mg Cd/L. Deposition of Cd in fish liver was higher than that in gill tissues but lowest Cd residue was observed in muscle tissues. No significant changes in Cd residues in fish organs were observed in yeast-fed fish with no Cd exposure. The Cd exposure negatively affected histological status of gill, liver, and kidney tissues of S. aurata; while feeding Cd-exposed fish on yeast diets lowered the Cd residues in fish organs and recovered the adverse effects of Cd toxicity. Hence, this study recommends the addition of bakery yeast (1.0%) to fish diets to improve the performance, overall welfare, and histopathological status of gilthead seabream, S. aurata.

The dietary effects of the green microalga Tetraselmis suecica (TS) on the growth, digestive enzymes, immune and antioxidant responses, genes expression, and disease resistance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fingerlings were investigated. This microalga was mixed with the diet' ingredients at doses of 0.0 (the control), 5, 10, 15, and 20 g/kg diet and then fed to fish daily for 84 days. After the feeding trial, fish were experimentally challenged with Aeromonas sobria, infection and fish mortalities were recorded for another 10 days. Dietary TS significantly (p < 0.05) enhanced growth, digestive enzymes activities, and blood proteins, particularly at the level of 15 g/kg diet. Feeding the fish on 15 TS/kg feed exhibited highest mRNA expressions of GH and IGF-1 genes as well as SOD, CAT, and GPx genes compared to other TS groups. Moreover, highest levels of hepatic antioxidant and immune indices were found in the treatment of 15 g TS/kg feed. Significant downregulation of IL-1ß and IL-8 genes expression and significant upregulation of IL-10 gene expression were observed in TS-fed fish, principally in fish groups fed on 15-20 g TS/kg feed. Conversely, hepatic malondialdehyde levels, blood glucose, and the activities of transaminases (ALT and AST) were significantly (p < 0.05) decreased in fish fed with 15-20 g TS/kg diet. Serum bactericidal activity against A. sobria was significantly higher in TS-fed fish groups, and its highest levels were found in treatments of 15-20 g/kg diet. Of interest, the survival rates of fish groups fed diets with 10-20 g TS/kg feed were higher after the challenge with A. sobria infection than the control group. Accordingly, we can conclude that supplementing fish diets with a 15 g TS/kg diet enhanced the growth, antioxidant and immune activities, and resistance of Nile tilapia fingerlings to possible A. sobria infection.

The antibacterial activity of aqueous (AE) or ethanolic extracts (EE) of caper (Capparis spinosa) against Streptococcus agalactiae was evaluated in vitro. Both caper extracts showed antagonistic activity against S. agalactiae and the inhibition zones in case of ethanolic extracts were larger than those of aqueous ones. Additionally, TEM investigations show that S. agalactiae cells treated with both C. spinosa extracts were damaged and degraded and this damage was greater in case of ethanolic extract. Another study was done to assess the promotion effects of dietary caper (C. spinosa) extracts on growth, antioxidant and immune activity, and inflammation cytokine responses of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and its resistance to S. agalactiae infection. However, fish (40 ± 2 g) were fed on diets containing 1.0 and 2.0 g/kg feed of each caper extract as well as the control group (free of caper) for 6 weeks. Fish were intraperitoneally injected (IP) with Streptococcus agalactiae at the end of the feeding trial, and fish mortality was tracked for additional ten days. Compared with other treatments, fish fed on 2.0 g EE/kg feed had higher counts of white and red blood cells as well as higher hemoglobin levels accompanied with lower AST and ALT activities. Antioxidant (superoxide dismutase and catalase activities) and immune, total protein, globulin, lysozyme, and immunoglobulin M) indices were increased along with significant decline in MDA levels in both caper extracts treated fish groups compared to the control group. Significant promotion in fish growth was affected positively with the increase in both caper extracts; particularly, the larger fish growth was observed in the treatment of 2.0 g EE/kg feed. Expressions of IL-1ß and IL-8 were declined; meanwhile levels of IL-10, SOD and CAT genes were upregulated in fish fed on 2.0 g EE/kg feed compared to other groups. After being challenged with S. agalactiae infection, fish survival was considerably (P < 0.05) greater in fish groups that fed on diets with caper extracts; particularly 2.0 g EE/kg feed (75%); while all fish fed on the control one were dead. According to these findings, the antioxidant and immune response of Nile tilapia fingerlings is stimulated by ethanolic extract of caper (2.0 g/kg feed), which also enhanced the growth performance and fish resistance to S. agalactiae infection.

Aquatic pollutants, including cadmium (Cd), cause oxidative stress on aquatic animals. The use of probiotics, including microalgae as a feed additive to alleviate the toxic impacts of heavy metals, is a much more interesting point. Hence, the current study investigated the oxidative stress and immunosuppression in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fingerlings caused by Cd toxicity as well as the preventive function of dietary Chlorella vulgaris against Cd toxicity. Accordingly, fish were fed on 0.0 (control), 5, and 15 g/kg diet of Chlorella up to satiation thrice a day, along with being exposed to 0.0 or 2.5 mg Cd/L for 60 days. Following the experimental procedure, fish from each group were intraperitoneally injected with Streptococcus agalactiae, and their survivability was observed for further ten days. Chlorella-supplemented diets meaningfully (P < 0.05) boosted the antioxidative capability of fish, which was evidenced by higher activities of hepatic superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) as well as higher levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) along with significant reductions in hepatic malondialdehyde levels. Moreover, the innate immunity indices [phagocytic activity (PA), respiratory burst activity (RBA), and alternative complement activity (ACH50)] were significantly higher in Chlorella-fed fish, particularly in the group of 15 g/kg diet. Additionally, serum of Chlorella-fed fish showed potent bactericidal activities against S. agalactiae, particularly at the treatment of a 15 g/kg diet. Feeding Chlorella diets to Nile tilapia fingerlings upregulated SOD, CAT, and GPx genes expression alongside the down-regulation of IL-1ß, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α, and HSP70 genes expression. Conversely, Cd toxicity caused oxidative stress and suppressed the fish's innate immunity with upregulation of the expression of IL-1ß, IL-8, IL-10, TNF-α, and HSP70 genes. Feeding Cd-exposed fish on Chlorella-containing diets attenuated these adverse effects. The current research revealed that supplementing feeds with the treatment of 15 g/kg diet of C. vulgaris supports the antioxidant-immune responses and alleviates the Cd toxicity effects on Nile tilapia fingerlings.

Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) (SP) has been utilized for a long time as a valued feed supplement because of its proteinous content and other beneficial phytochemical compounds. Herein, we investigated the influences of SP-supplemented diets on growth, body somatic indices, digestive enzymes, hepatic antioxidant activities, and immunological responses of hapa-reared thinlip mullet (Liza ramada) juveniles. Fish were assigned in six triplicate groups and were fed for consecutive 60 days on the prepared experimental diets containing varying SP levels as 0.0, 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0, and 10.0 g/kg diet and defined as control (CNT or SP0), SP2, SP4, SP6, SP8, and SP10 groups, respectively. The results indicated that dietary SP supplementation linearly and quadratically improved the fish growth performance, and the highest growth indices were found in the SP8 group. However, dietary SP supplementation did not significantly alter feed conversion ratio (FCR), survival rate (%), hepato-somatic index, and viscera-somatic index among all experimental groups. Meanwhile, digestive enzymes (lipase, α-amylase, and proteases) in the mid-intestine were also linearly and quadratically increased in all SP-fed groups, and their uppermost values were noted in the SP8 group. Hepatic antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, and total antioxidant capacity in SP-supplemented groups were significantly elevated than the CNT group. Conversely, hepatic malondialdehyde contents were decreased significantly along with increasing dietary SP-supplementation levels. The immunological parameters such as lysozyme, respiratory burst, and alternative complement activities were significantly elevated in SP-fed groups than in the CNT group. These findings evoked that feeding SP-supplemented diets (especially at 8.0 g/kg diet) significantly promoted the growth, digestive enzymes, hepatic antioxidant status, and immunity of L. ramada juveniles.

In the current study, white-leg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) were fed on diets containing varying doses of Withania somnifera aqueous extract (WSAE) at a rate of 0 (control), 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 g/kg feed for 56 days. After the feeding trial, shrimps in all groups were challenged with the exposure to Vibrio harveyi for ten days during which animals' mortality was observed. It is noted that the dietary WSAE linearly and quadratically stimulated shrimp's growth indices particularly at the treatment of 2.0 g/kg feed. Compared to the control group, the WSAE-fed L. vannamei had significantly higher villi length, villi width, and absorption area particularly in the treatment of 2.0 g/kg feed. Furthermore, L. vannamei fed on WSAE-enriched diets consumed more feed and exhibited higher total proteolytic activity, lipase, and α-amylase activities as compared with the control group. The dietary WSAE at escalating levels linearly and quadratically enhanced the antioxidant activity (serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), total antioxidant capacity, and reduced glutathione) and the immune response (total hemocyte counts, total protein, lysozyme, and phagocytic activity). Similarly, the mRNA expression levels of cMn-SOD, CAT, and GPx genes were linearly and quadratically upregulated in the hepatopancreas of L. vannamei fed on WSAE-enriched diets (especially in the 2.0 g/kg feed treatment), while their lowest levels were significantly observed in the control group. On the other hand, malondialdehyde levels were significantly decreased in WSAE-supplemented shrimp groups, and its highest levels were observed in animals fed on the control diet. After the bacterial exposure, the survival rates of L. vannamei fed on 1.0 and 2.0 g WSAE/kg feed (61.3% and 66.7%, respectively) were higher than those in the control animals. Taken together, the results obtained herein indicate that inclusion of WSAE in diets of L. vannamei effectively enhanced the growth, antioxidant biomarkers, immune response, and resistance to the V. harveyi infection, particularly at the treatment of 2.0 g/kg feed.

Amyloodiniosis and vibriosis are serious diseases in European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) hatcheries with noticeable high mortality. This study was conducted on tank-cultured D. labrax frys at a private marine hatchery near Mariout Lake (Alexandria, Egypt). Frys showed a high mortality rate (70%), lethargy, darkening, asphyxia, ascites, and velvety skin appearance. Both infectious agents were presumptively identified in all investigated frys. The identities of the two recovered agents were confirmed by molecular assay and phylogenetic analysis. On the tissue level, histopathological examination of skin, splenic, and renal tissue indicated severe alterations due to the direct impacts of both infections. On the cellular level, scanning electron micrographs showed both protozoal and bacterial pathogens on/in gill epithelial cells in solitary and colonial forms. Vibrio alginolyticus showed variable results for tested antibiotics, with a higher sensitivity to florfenicol. A successful control strategy was strictly adopted to overcome infections and stop mortalities. Copper sulphate and hydrogen peroxide were efficiently applied to tank water to overcome A. ocellatum infections. Further, florfenicol was effectively used to overcome systemic V. alginolyticus infections. The efficacy of treatments was confirmed by the absence of infectious agents in randomly collected fish samples. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this study is one of the earliest Egyptian studies that dealt with the dilemma of mass kills associated with external parasitic/systemic bacterial infections among hatchery-reared European seabass.

Pathogens isolated from fish appear to possess considerable antimicrobial resistance and represent a problem for the economy and public health. Natural antimicrobial substitutes to traditional antibiotics represent an essential tool in the fight against antibiotic resistance. Nanotechnology has shown considerable potential in different research fields, and the antimicrobial properties of silver nanoparticles are known. Silver has been used for medical purposes since ancient times because of its bactericidal properties, and the highly reactive surfaces of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) indicate that they might have a function in antimicrobial applications. This work aimed to study the antimicrobial properties of biologically produced AgNPs from Origanum vulgare leaves compared to chemically produced AgNPs. Both types were characterized by UV-vis spectrophotometry, TEM, and dynamic light scattering and tested against three bacterial strains (Streptococcus agalactiae, and Aeromonas hydrophila, both isolated from Nile tilapia and Vibrio alginolyticus, isolated from sea bass) and three fungal strains (Aspergillus flavus, Fusarium moniliforme, and Candida albicans, all isolated from Nile tilapia). Disk diffusion test and evaluation of ultrastructure changes of tested microorganisms treated with AgNPs by transmission electron microscopy were performed. Moreover, the hemolytic properties of AgNPs were studied on chicken and goat red blood cells. The results obtained declare that the green biological production of silver nanoparticles is safer and more effective than the chemical one; moreover, AgNPs have interesting dose-dependent antimicrobial properties, with better results for biologically produced ones; their effectiveness against tested bacterial and fungal strains opens the way to their use to limit fish diseases, increase economy and improve human health.

This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of aqueous extract of Withania somnifera (W. somnifera) against cadmium chloride-induced toxicity in the Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Five experimental groups were designed: group (I) was free from cadmium chloride and W. somnifera and served as a control, group (II) was exposed to 1.775 mg L-1 of cadmium chloride only (which is equivalent to 1/4 96-h LC50), while groups (III), (IV), and (V) were exposed to 1.775 mg cadmium chloride L-1 with co-supplementation of dietary W. somnifera in doses of 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 mL kg-1 body weight (bwt), respectively. The experiment lasted for 4 weeks. In the second and fourth weeks of the experiment, the following indicators were evaluated: hematological (hemogram and blood protein profile), biochemical (activities of serum liver enzymes, namely alanine transaminase (ALT) and aspartate transaminase (AST)), immunological (immunoglobulin M (IgM), serum lysozyme), and tissue antioxidant changes (malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)). Additionally, gene expressions of glutathione-S-transferase (GST) in the liver were assessed. At the end of the experiment, all fish in all groups were experimentally challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila and the relative protection survival (RPS) was demonstrated. The results revealed that groups exposed to cadmium chloride toxicity and co-supplemented with dietary aqueous extract of W. somnifera at high doses showed significant ameliorative effects in hemogram parameters, total protein, globulin, IgM, and lysozyme against cadmium chloride-induced toxicity compared to the control group and the group exposed to a sublethal dose of cadmium chloride without co-suplemntation of W. somnifera. The results showed also that groups supplemented orally with W. somnifera at high doses have higher antioxidant activities of CAT and SOD and reduction of MDA formation. Levels of gene expressions of GST in the liver were higher in W. somnifera extract-supplemented groups more than those in the group exposed to cadmium chloride-induced toxicity without W. somnifera supplementation. In addition, the results revealed improved RPS with the dietary supply of W. somnifera extract in high doses. In conclusion, this study showed that the dietary supplementation of W. somnifera extract to diets of O. niloticus could be suggested as an effective way to overcome cadmium chloride-induced toxicity because it improves blood parameters and antioxidants, and it can be used as an immunostimulant against the invading bacterial pathogens.

This study was aimed to evaluate the efficiency of Sargassumpolycystum and nucleotides- supplemented diets to improve immune response and cold-tolerance of juvenile Litopenaeus vannamei. Four treatments were evaluated: T1, the control, shrimp received only a basal diet; T2, a basal diet with 500 ppm nucleotides; T3, a basal diet with 500 ppm S.polycystum powdered; T4, a basal diet with 500 ppm nucleotides and 500 ppm S.polycystum powdered. Shrimp were fed experimental diets for 56 days. Results revealed shrimp fed T4 diet exhibited the best significant improvement in water quality, survival, growth, and feed utilization indices followed by T2, and T3, while T1 showed the worst values. Additionally, nonspecific immune responses (phagocytosis (%), lysozyme, phenoloxidase, super oxide dismutase (SOD) activity, total nitric oxide) were improved with 1.7-3.2-fold in T4 higher than T1. Histomorphology of hepatopancreas in T4 showed the most increased activation of the hepatic glandular duct system compared with the other treatments. Moreover, nucleotides/seaweed-supplemented diets upregulated relative expression of cMnSOD, Penaeidin4, and heat shock protein70 (HSP70) genes, while translationally controlled tumor protein (TCTP) was downregulated. In conclusion, the synergistic effects of both S. polycystum and nucleotides have many advantages as a growth promoter, immunostimulant, antimicrobial, and cold-tolerant stimulant to L. vannamei.

The present study was performed to evaluate the toxic effects of feed-born zearalenone (ZEN) on antioxidative status, immunity, transcriptomic responses of European seabass, and the modulating roles of dietary garlic and/or chitosan powders. Fish (30.7 ± 0.6 g) were randomly arranged in five experimental groups (in triplicates), whereas the first group was fed on the control diet only without any supplements (control), and the second group was fed on the basal diet contaminated with ZEN (0.725 mg/kg diet). Three other groups were fed on ZEN-contaminated diets and simultaneously supplemented with garlic powder (GP) (30 g/kg diet) (ZEN + GP), chitosan powder (CH) (10 g/kg diet) (ZEN + CH), and a mixture of GP and CH (ZEN + GP + CH). Fish were fed on the experimental diets thrice a day for 4 weeks. Two-way ANOVA revealed a gradual decline in serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities in the ZEN group reaching their lowest levels at the 4th week. Contrariwise, malondialdehyde levels were markedly higher in the ZEN group reaching their highest values at the end of the experiment. A significant decline of total immunoglobulins (P < 0.05) was observed in the serum of the ZEN group, especially after the 4th week. Moreover, significant down-regulation of interleukin-4 (IL-4) and interleukin 1 beta (IL-1ß) genes (P < 0.05) alongside significant up-regulation of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) genes (P < 0.05) in the liver and anterior kidney of ZEN-intoxicated group. Interestingly, dietary supplementation with GP and CH significantly attenuated ZEN-induced oxidative stress, immunosuppression, and modulated transcriptomic responses of ZEN-exposed fish. Moreover, combined dietary supplementation of both feed additives resulted in better effects than each one alone.

Black soldier fly larvae meal (BSFLM) has been successfully demonstrated as a promising fish meal (FM) replacer in diets of several fish species including European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax). However, its impacts on antioxidant capacity, and immune responses of treated fish are still poorly understood. A 60-day feeding trial was carried out to evaluate the effects of partial substitution of FM with different levels of dry BSFLM on the antioxidative status, non-specific immunity, transcriptomic responses, and resistance of European seabass to the challenge with Vibrio alginolyticus. Four isoproteic (45%) and isolipidic diets were formulated by replacing 0.0%, 25%, 35%, and 50% of the dietary FM. Each diet was randomly assigned to four fish groups (in triplicates) (initial mean body weight, 12.1 ± 0.21 g) (20 fish per aquarium) (n = 240). Fish were fed three times daily to the apparent satiation. At the end of the feeding trial, serum antioxidant biomarkers such as malondialdehyde levels, and catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase enzyme activities were significantly increased in all BSFLM groups in a dose-dependent manner compared to the control group (P < 0.05). The non-specific immune indices, including phagocytic activity, phagocytic index, serum lysozyme and respiratory burst activities were significantly elevated in BSFLM groups compared to those in the control group (P < 0.05). Significant upregulation of the mRNA expression levels of hepatic heat shock protein 70, interleukin-1beta and interleukin-10 genes were observed in all BSFLM groups compared to the control group (P < 0.05). Additionally, after the challenge with V. alginolyticus, the relative percent of survival was significantly elevated in fish groups fed on diets containing graded levels of BSFLM over the control group (P < 0.05). Conclusively, the present study suggests the potential efficacy of partial replacement of dietary FM protein for up to 50% by BSFLM without negative effects on fish health with possible potentiation of the antioxidative status, and the immune responses of the European seabass.

The current study aimed at assessing the recuperative roles of dietary Spirulina platensis on the antioxidation capacity of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) exposed to sodium sulphate for eight weeks. In brief, fish were allocated into four groups with three triplicates per group, where a group fed on a commercial basal diet served as control, a group was intoxicated with sodium sulphate (SS) 5.8 mg/L, another group was fed a diet supplemented with 1% S. platensis (SP), and the last group was fed 1% SP and concomitantly intoxicated with 5.8 mg/L sodium sulphate (SP/SS). Tissue antioxidative indices of each fish were measured as follows: glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in muscles, catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in gills, and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) in the liver and kidney. Moreover, the expression of hepatic SOD, GSH-Px, and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) genes was also determined. It was found that tissue CAT, SOD, and GSH-Px activities as well as the T-AOC levels were significantly decreased in the SS group (p < 0.05). Moreover, there was a significant downregulation of hepatic SOD, GSH-Px, and GST genes in SS-exposed fish (p < 0.05). Interestingly, simultaneous dietary supplementation with SP provided a marked attenuation of the tissue antioxidative parameters when compared with the SS and control groups. To conclude, the present study exemplifies that dietary SP supplementation could be a beneficial abrogation of SS-induced tissue oxidative stress in the exposed fish.

An efficient multiresidue method for the simultaneous determination of metronidazole (MET) and spiramycin (SPY) in tilapia fish muscle, based on high performance liquid chromatography with UV detection (HPLC-UV), has been developed. The drugs were extracted with 0.2% orthophosphoric acid-methanol (6:4), and the extracts were cleaned up on a solid phase extraction cartridge, C18 Sep-Pak light column. The LC separation was performed on a RP stainless-steel C-18 analytical column (150 mm x 4.6 mm, 5 microm) with a gradient elution system of 0.05 M phosphate buffer adjusted to pH 2.4-acetonitrile as the mobile phase at the flow rate of 1.0 ml min(-1). A wavelength programming was applied for the UV detection of the analytes. The method not only enabled the determination of the parent drugs, MET and SPY, but also permitted the determination of their metabolites, hydroxymetronidazole (HMET) and neospiramycin (NSPY). The calibration graphs for each drug were rectilinear in the range of 0.005-1.000 microg g(-1) for MET and HMET and 0.025-1.000 microg g(-1) for SPY and NSPY. With this method, the cited drugs with their metabolites were determined in fortified fish muscle tissues at levels of 0.025, 0.1 and 1.0 microg g(-1) with good accuracy and precision. LOD and LOQ obtained for each drug were as follows: 0.002 and 0.005 microg g(-1) for MET and HMET and 0.005 and 0.025 microg g(-1) for SPY and NSPY. Utilization of the method to successfully analyze tilapia fish muscle samples incurred with MET and SPY was described.
