RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Theranostic agents can combine photosensitizers and contrast agents into a single unit for photothermal therapy (PTT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The possibility of treating and diagnosing malignant cancers without any ionizing radiation could become an option. This study investigates the theranostic potential of Fe3O4 nanoparticles (IONs) for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer by developing a single integrated nanoprobe. METHODS: Oleylamin-coated IONs (ION-Ol) were synthesized and surface of the IONs was modified using protoporphyrin (PP) and trastuzumab (TZ) to develop the TZ-conjugated SPION-porphyrin [ION-PP-TZ]. The structure, morphology, size, and cytotoxicity of all samples were investigated using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), WST-1 assay, respectively. In addition to MRI and in vitro laser irradiation (808 nm, 200 mW) to determine the r2 values and photothermal ablation. RESULTS: The sizes of monodispersed nanoparticles were measured in rang 5.74-7.17 nm. No cytotoxicity was observed after incubating MCF 7 cells under various Fe concentrations of nanoparticles and theranostic agents. The transverse relaxation time of the protoporphyrin conjugated to IONs (52.32 mM-1s-1) exceeded that of ION-Ol and TZ-conjugated ION-PP. In addition, the in vitro photothermal ablation of ION-PP-TZ revealed a 74 % MCF 7 cell reduction after 10 min of at the highest Fe concentration (1.00 mg Fe/mL). CONCLUSIONS: In summary, the water-soluble ION-PP-TZ is a promising bimodal agent for the diagnosis and treatment of human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive breast cancer cells using a T2 MRI contrast agent and photothermal therapy.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Sleep is essential in maintaining health and quality of life. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients suffer from poor sleep quality. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of sleep disturbances in Iranian IBD patients as well as the variables which can be attributed to the quality of sleep in IBD patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-one patients filled in Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Disease activity was assessed by Crohn's Disease (CD) Activity Index and Ulcerative Colitis (UC) Activity Index. Regression analysis was used to identify the association between sociodemographic and disease characteristics with sleep quality. RESULTS: We found that 32.4% of all patients, 23.1% of patients with "in remission to mild" disease, and 66.7% of patients with "moderate" disease, had poor sleep quality. CD patients were more likely to have poor sleep quality comparing UC ones in crude (odds ratio [OR] =2.14; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.14-4.04) and adjusted (OR = 6.19; 95% CI 1.13, 34.07) models. Patients with good quality of sleep had lower systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure (P = 0.09 and 0.035 respectively). CONCLUSION: Notable percentage of IBD patients suffer from poor sleep quality even in the remission phase. Treatment of sleep disturbances, especially in CD patients, is recommended in the IBD patient-care program.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the relationship between body mass index (BMI) of children and that of their parents in a nationally-representative sample of Iranian population. METHODS: This cross-sectional nationwide study was conducted in 2011-2012 among 6-18-year-old students and their parents living in 30 provinces of Iran. Socio-demographic information was collected. The BMI values of the children/adolescents were categorized according to the World Health Organization reference curves. Association between parental and student weight status was examined using ordinal regression models after adjustment for potential confounders. RESULTS: Overall, 23043 children and adolescents and one of their parents participated in this study (50.7% boys, 73.4% urban status). Mean age of the subjects was 12.55±3.31 years. Mean BMI values of parents and children/adolescents were 27.0±4.57 and 18.8±4.4 kg/m2, respectively. After adjusting for confounders, overweight and/or obesity in students of both genders was found to be significantly associated with parental overweight and/or obesity. In those students who had obese parents, the odds ratio (OR) of being obese was 2.79 for boys [OR=2.79; 95% confidence interval (CI)=2.44-3.20] and 3.46 for girls (OR=3.46; 95% CI=3.03-3.94) compared to their peers with normal-weight parents. Boys with overweight parents were 1.7 times more overweight than their counterparts with normal-weight parents (OR=1.70; 95% CI=1.15-1.92). Similarly, girls who had overweight parents were more overweight compared to those with normal-weight parents (OR=2.00; 95% CI=1.77-2.25). CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight the importance of the shared family environment as a multi-factorial contributor to the childhood obesity epidemic and the necessity of implementing family-centered preventive programs.
