Benzophenone-3 (BP-3, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone, oxybenzone) is one of the most widely used types of benzophenone organic sunscreen. However, this compound is a potentially harmful toxicant. The aim of this study was 2-fold to: (1) utilize a Hershberger bioassay in vivo in castrated male Sprague-Dawley rats to investigate the anti-androgenic activities of BP-3, and (2) use in vitro a methyl tetrazolium assay to compare the toxicity between Leydig cells (TM3 cells) and mouse fibroblast (NIH-3T3) cell lines. In the Hershberger assay, rats were divided into 6 groups (each of n = 7): a vehicle control, negative control, positive control, PB-3 low (40 mg/kg), BP-3 intermediate (200 mg/kg), and BP-3 high (1000 mg/kg)-dose. The weight of the ventral prostate was significantly decreased at BP-3 doses of 200 or 1,000 mg/kg/day. In addition, the levator anibulbocavernosus muscle weights were also significantly reduced at BP-3 doses of 40, 200, or 1,000 mg/kg/day. In the MTT assay, the viability of NIH-3T3 mouse fibroblast cells was within the normal range. However, the TM3 mouse testis Leydig cell viability was significantly lowered in a concentration-dependent manner. In this work, we proposed a novel computer modeling and simulation technique for motion tracking of lung bronchi (or tumors) under respiration using 9 cases of computed tomography (CT)-based patient-specific finite element (FE) models and Ogden's hyperelastic model. In the fabrication of patient-specific FE models for the respiratory system, various organs such as the mediastinum, diaphragm, and thorax that could affect the lung motions during breathing were considered. To describe the nonlinear material behavior of lung parenchyma, the comparative simulation for biaxial tension-compression of lung parenchyma was carried out using several hyperelastic models in ABAQUS, and then, Ogden's model was adopted as an optimal model. Based on the aforementioned FE models and Ogden's material model, the 9 cases of respiration simulation were carried out from exhalation to inhalation, and the motion of lung bronchi (or tumors) was tracked. In addition, the changes in lung volume, lung cross-sectional area on the axial plane during breathing were calculated. Finally, the simulation results were quantitatively compared to the inhalation/exhalation CT images of 9 subjects to validate the proposed technique. Through the simulation, it was confirmed that the average relative errors of simulation to clinical data regarding to the displacement of 258 landmarks in the lung bronchi branches of total subjects were 1.10%~2.67%. In addition, the average relative errors of those with respect to the lung cross-sectional area changes and the volume changes in the superior-inferior direction were 0.20%~5.00% and 1.29 ~ 9.23%, respectively. Hence, it was considered that the simulation results were coincided well with the clinical data. The novelty of the present study is as follows: (1) The framework from fabrication of the human respiratory system to validation of the bronchi motion tracking is provided step by step. (2) The comparative simulation study for nonlinear material behavior of lung parenchyma was carried out to describe the realistic lung motion. (3) Various organs surrounding the lung parenchyma and restricting its motion were considered in respiration simulation. (4) The simulation results such as landmark displacement, lung cross-sectional area/volume changes were quantitatively compared to the clinical data of 9 subjects.

Pulmonary contusion is an important risk factor for respiratory complications in trauma patients. Hence, we aimed to determine the relationship between the ratio of pulmonary contusion volume to the total lung volume and patient outcomes and the predictability of respiratory complications. We retrospectively included 73 patients with a pulmonary contusion on chest computed tomography (CT) from 800 patients with chest trauma admitted to our facility between January 2019 and January 2020. Chest injury severity was expressed as the ratio of pulmonary contusion volume to total lung volume by quantifying pulmonary contusion volume on chest CT. The cut-off value was 80%. Among the 73 patients with pulmonary contusion (77% males, mean age: 45.3 years), 28 patients had pneumonia, and five had acute respiratory distress syndrome. The number of patients in the severe risk group with > 20% of pulmonary contusion volume was 38, among whom 23 had pneumonia. For predicting pneumonia, the area under the receiver operating characteristic curves for the ratio of pulmonary contusion volume was 0.85 (95% confidence interval 0.76-0.95, p = 0.008); the optimal threshold was 70.4%. Quantifying pulmonary contusion volume using initial CT enables identifying patients with chest trauma at high risk of delayed respiratory complications.

In this study, iron oxide nanoparticles (FeOx NPs) were synthesized by using Fe solution recycled from NdFeB permanent magnet scrap. Furthermore, the effect of polyvinylpolypyrrolidone (PVP) as a surfactant on the characteristics of the FeOx NPs was investigated. Firstly, Fe solution was prepared by using 10% H2SO4 solution and Na2SO4 salt. In addition, three reducing agent solutions were prepared by dissolving PVP in 0.5 M NH4OH solution in distilled (D.I.) water with concentrations of 0 wt%, 1 wt%, and 2 wt%, respectively. Each reducing agent solution was added dropwise into the Fe solution to precipitate three precursors of FeOx NPs, and they were heat-treated at 400 °C to prepare three FeOx NPs samples, P0, P1, and P2. In X-ray diffractometer (XRD) analysis, diffraction peaks of P0 sample are consistent with the Fe3O4 with (311) preferred orientation. The XRD peak shifted from Fe3O4 to Fe2O3 structure as PVP concentration increased, and the crystal structure of P2 sample was transformed to Fe2O3 with (104) preferred orientation. Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller (BET) specific surface area increased in proportional to PVP concentration. HRTEM observation also supported the tendency; the particle size of the P0 sample was less than 40 nm, and particle size decreased as PVP concentration increased, leading to the particle size of the P2 sample being less than 20 nm in width. In addition, particle morphology started to be transformed from particle to rod shape as PVP concentration increased and, in the P2 sample, all the morphology of particles was transformed to a rod shape. Magnetic properties analysis revealed that the P0 sample exhibited the highest value of magnetic moment, 65.6 emu/g, and the magnetic moment was lowered in the P1 sample, and the P2 sample exhibited the lowest value of magnetic moment, 2.4 emu/g.

In this study, ultrafine nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO NPs) were well synthesized using a simple wet chemical method under low temperature, 300 °C. An Ni(OH)2 precursor was well precipitated by dropping NH4OH into an Ni(Ac)2 solution. TG-DTA showed that the weight of the precipitate decreases until 300 °C; therefore, the precursor was heat-treated at 300 °C. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns indicated that hexagonal-structured NiO NPs with (200) preferred orientation was synthesized. In addition, BET specific surface area (SSA) and HRTEM analyses revealed that spherical NiO NPs were formed with SSA and particle size of 60.14 m2/g and ca. 5-15 nm by using the low temperature method. FT-IR spectra of the NiO NPs showed only a sharp vibrating absorption peak at around 550 cm-1 owing to the Ni-O bond. Additionally, in UV-vis absorption spectra, the wavelength for absorption edge and energy band gap of the ultrafine NiO NPs was 290 nm and 3.44 eV.

Oral mucosal melanoma is a very rare type of malignant melanoma, the characteristics of which differ from those of cutaneous melanoma. Primary amelanotic melanoma of the mandibular gingiva, which can invade the mandibular bone, is very rare worldwide. Here, we report a case in which we performed a reconstruction of the mandible and gingiva using the fibula osteocutaneous free flap procedure to treat a patient diagnosed with a primary amelanotic melanoma of the mandibular gingiva. The procedure was successful, and no recurrence was observed 10 months after surgery. Oral mucosal melanoma has a much poorer prognosis and a lower 5-year survival rate than cutaneous melanoma. However, recently, immunomodulatory therapies for mutations in melanocytic lesions have been used effectively to treat the increasing number of patients developing this type of melanoma, thus improving the prognosis of patients with oral mucosal melanoma.

Post-traumatic scar deformations are common in many skin injury cases. These are usually aesthetic problems, but if these deformations impair mobility and the patient feels uncomfortable, we must resolve them. In a patient with a lateral post-traumatic scar fold in the lateral canthus that shortened the horizontal orbital fissure and created traction on eye opening, we performed modified classic Z-plasty, resulting in aesthetic and functional improvements without recurrence.

A mobile three-dimensional image acquisition and reconstruction system using a computer-generated integral imaging technique is proposed. A depth camera connected to the mobile device acquires the color and depth data of a real object simultaneously, and an elemental image array is generated based on the original three-dimensional information for the object, with lens array specifications input into the mobile device. The three-dimensional visualization of the real object is reconstructed on the mobile display through optical or digital reconstruction methods. The proposed system is implemented successfully and the experimental results certify that the system is an effective and interesting method of displaying real three-dimensional content on a mobile device.

BACKGROUND: A pharyngocutaneous fistula is a common and difficult-to-manage complication after head and neck reconstruction. It can lead to serious complications such as flap failure, carotid artery rupture, and pharyngeal stricture, and may require additional surgery. Previous radiotherapy, a low serum albumin level, and a higher T stage have been proposed as contributing factors. We aimed to clarify the risk factors for pharyngocutaneous fistula in patients who underwent flap reconstruction and to describe our experiences in treating pharyngocutaneous fistula. METHODS: Squamous cell carcinoma cases that underwent flap reconstruction after cancer resection from 1995 to 2013 were analyzed retrospectively. We investigated several significant clinical risk factors. The treatment modality was selected according to the size of the fistula and the state of the surrounding tissue, with options including conservative management, direct closure, flap surgery, and pharyngostoma formation. RESULTS: A total of 127 cases (18 with fistulae) were analyzed. A higher T stage (P=0.048) and tube-type reconstruction (P=0.007) increased fistula incidence; other factors did not show statistical significance (P>0.05). Two cases were treated with conservative management, 1 case with direct closure, 4 cases with immediate reconstruction using a pectoralis major musculocutaneous flap, and 11 cases with direct closure (4 cases) or additional flap surgery (7 cases) after pharyngostoma formation. CONCLUSIONS: Pharyngocutaneous fistula requires global management from prevention to treatment. In cases of advanced-stage cancer and tube-type reconstruction, a more cautious approach should be employed. Once it occurs, an accurate diagnosis of the fistula and a thorough assessment of the surrounding tissue are necessary, and aggressive treatment should be implemented in order to ensure satisfactory long-term results.

In this study, ITO nanoparticles (ITO-NPs) were reused from ITO target scraps to synthesize low cost ITO-NPs and to apply to make sputtering target for transparent conductive electrodes (TCEs). By controlling heat-treatment temperature as 980 °C, we achieved reused ITO-NPs having Brunauer, Emmett and Teller specific surface area (BET SSA) and average particle size 8.05 m2/g and 103.8 nm, respectively. The BET SSA decreases along with increasing heat-treatment temperature. The ITO-NPs were grown as round mound shape, and highly crystallized to (222) preferred orientations. Also, applying the reused ITO-NPs, we achieved an ITO target of which density was 99.6%. Using the ITO target, we achieved high quality TCE layer of which sheet resistance and optical transmittance at 550 nm were 29.5 Ω/sq. and 82.3%. Thus, it was confirmed that the reused ITO-NPs was feasible to sputtering target for TCEs layer.

We investigated the effects of pulsed gate bias on degradation of amorphous indium gallium zinc oxide (a-InGaZnO) thin film transistors (TFTs). The waveform composed of 0 V and 20 V produced little degradation, but the waveform composed of -20 V and 0 V produced a considerable degradation on the turn-on current in the transfer characteristics. Those instabilities were found mostly in TFTs of which the concentration of Zn is higher than the other metallic components (In, Ga). In order to explain the anomalous degradation behaviors, we propose a possible degradation model which is different from the conventional model of charge trapping. Our proposed model is related to an increase of acceptor-like states in a-InGaZnO near the source and drain electrodes. More electrons can be trapped there, and the increased potential barrier hinders current flow in the channel. The proposed model can also account for the increased frequency dispersion in C-V characteristics of our a-InGaZnO TFTs after the waveform stress.

BACKGROUND: The incidence and etiology of facial bone fracture differ widely according to time and geographic setting. Because of this, prevention and management of facial bone fracture requires ongoing research. This study examines the relationship between socioeconomic status and the incidence of facial bone fractures in patients who had been admitted for facial bone fractures. METHODS: A retrospective study was performed for all patients admitted for facial bone fracture at the National Medical Center (Seoul, Korea) from 2010 to 2014. We sought correlations amongst age, gender, fracture type, injury mechanism, alcohol consumption, and type of medical insurance. RESULTS: Out of the 303 patients meeting inclusion criteria, 214 (70.6%) patients were enrolled in National Health Insurance (NHI), 46 (15.2%) patients had Medical Aid, and 43 (14.2%) patients were homeless. The main causes of facial bone fractures were accidental trauma (51.4%), physical altercation (23.1%), and traffic accident (14.2%). On Pearson's chi-square test, alcohol consumption was correlated significantly with accidental trauma (p<0.05). And, the ratio of alcohol consumption leading to facial bone fractures differed significantly in the homeless group compared to the NHI group and the Medical Aid group (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: We found a significant inverse correlation between economic status and the incidence of facial bone fractures caused by alcohol consumption. Our findings indicate that more elaborate guidelines and prevention programs are needed for socioeconomically marginalized populations.
