RESUMEN

Argonaute (AGO), a component of RNA-induced silencing complexes (RISCs), is a representative RNA-binding protein (RBP) known to bind with mature microRNA (miRNA) and is directly involved in post-transcriptional gene silencing. However, despite the biological significance of miRNA, the roles of other micro RNA-binding proteins (miRBPs) remain unclear in regulation of miRNA loading, dissociation from RISC, and extracellular release. In this study, we perform protein arrays to profile miRBPs and identify 118 RNA-binding proteins directly binding with miRNAs. Among those proteins, RBP quaking (QKI) inhibits extracellular release of mature microRNA let-7b by controlling the loading of let-7b into extracellular vesicles via additional miRBPs such as hnRNPD/AUF1 and hnRNPK. The enhanced extracellular release of let-7b after QKI depletion activates the Toll-like Receptor 7 (TLR7) and promotes the production of proinflammatory cytokines in recipient cells, leading to brain inflammation in mouse cortex. Thus, this study reveals contribution of QKI to the inhibition of brain inflammation via regulation of extracellular let-7b release.

Objective: Although Republic of Korea is an advanced country in medical technology with a successful treatment rate for serious diseases, such as cancer, and has improved technology for highly difficult surgery, many excellent medical doctors and physicians are struggling due to the recent unreasonable medical environment. Specialization in brain tumor surgery also faces challenges in Republic of Korea, including low financial incentives, legal threats, and limited career prospects. In response, the Korea Brain Tumor Society (KBTS) formed the Future Strategy Committee to assess these obstacles and propose solutions. Methods: A survey was conducted among the KBTS members to understand their perceptions and concerns across different career stages. Results: The findings revealed a decline in interest among chief residents in brain tumor surgery, owing to limited job opportunities and income prospects. Neurosurgical fellows expressed neutral satisfaction but highlighted challenges, such as low patient numbers and income. Faculty members with varying levels of experience echoed similar concerns, emphasizing the need for improved financial incentives and job stability. Despite these challenges, the respondents expressed dedication to the field and suggested strategies for improvement. Conclusion: The KBTS outlines a vision that focuses on practical excellence, comprehensive research, professional education, responsibilities, and member satisfaction. Addressing these challenges requires collaborative efforts among healthcare institutions, professional societies, and policymakers to support brain tumor specialists and enhance patient care.

Shared appraisals and collaboration within couples play important roles in optimizing health. Less is known about concordance regarding collaboration, factors associated with concordance, and implications for health. Data from 2,761 couples from the Health and Retirement Study (2014/2016 and 2016/2018 waves) were examined to determine within-couple concordance in completion of two tasks (family decisions and medical forms). The majority of couples were concordant regarding who makes family decisions (69.7%) and who completes medical forms (64.4%); 62% agreed they make family decisions collaboratively versus 25.5% completing medical forms collaboratively. Concordance was significantly associated with greater marital support and longer marital duration. Concordance was not significantly associated with depressive symptoms 2 years later, but the link between concordance in making major family decisions and self-rated health differed by age and gender. Future research at the intersection of concordance and collaboration may shed important light on how older couples navigate tasks and decisions.

BACKGROUND: Photoperiod sensitivity is among the most important agronomic traits of rice, as it determines local and seasonal adaptability and plays pivotal roles in determining yield and other key agronomic characteristics. By controlling the photoperiod, early-maturing rice can be cultivated to shorten the breeding cycle, thereby reducing the risk of yield losses due to unpredictable climate change. Furthermore, early-maturing and high-yielding rice needs to be developed to ensure food security for a rapidly growing population. Early-maturing and high-yielding rice should be developed to fulfill these requirements. OsCKq1 encodes the casein kinase1 protein in rice. OsCKq1 is a gene that is activated by photophosphorylation when Ghd7, which suppresses flowering under long-day conditions, is activated. RESULTS: This study investigates how OsCKq1 affects heading in rice. OsCKq1-GE rice was analyzed the function of OsCKq1 was investigated by comparing the expression levels of genes related to flowering regulation. The heading date of OsCKq1-GE lines was earlier (by about 3 to 5 days) than that of Ilmi (a rice cultivar, Oryza sativa spp. japonica), and the grain length, grain width, 1,000-grain weight, and yield increased compared to Ilmi. Furthermore, the culm and panicle lengths of OsCKq1-GE lines were either equal to or longer than those of Ilmi. CONCLUSIONS: Our research demonstrates that OsCKq1 plays a pivotal role in regulating rice yield and photoperiod sensitivity. Specifically, under long-day conditions, OsCKq1-GE rice exhibited reduced OsCKq1 mRNA levels alongside increased mRNA levels of Hd3a, Ehd1, and RFT1, genes known for promoting flowering, leading to earlier heading compared to Ilmi. Moreover, we observed an increase in seed size. These findings underscore OsCKq1 as a promising target for developing early-maturing and high-yielding rice cultivars, highlighting the potential of CRISPR/Cas9 technology in enhancing crop traits.

The rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae poses a significant challenge to maintaining rice production. Developing rice varieties with resistance to this disease is crucial for its effective control. To understand the genetic variability of blast isolates collected between 2015 and 2017, the 27 monogenic rice lines that carry specific resistance genes were used to evaluate blast disease reactions. Based on criteria such as viability, virulence, and reactions to resistance genes, 20 blast isolates were selected as representative strains. To identify novel resistance genes, a quantitative trait locus analysis was carried out utilizing a mixture of the 20 representative rice blast isolates and a rice population derived from crossing the blast-resistant cultivar 'Cheongcheong' with the blast-susceptible cultivar 'Nagdong'. This analysis revealed a significant locus, RM1227-RM1261 on chromosome 12, that is associated with rice blast resistance. Within this locus, 12 disease resistance-associated protein genes were identified. Among them, OsDRq12, a member of the nucleotide-binding, leucine-rich repeat disease resistance family, was chosen as the target gene for additional computational investigation. The findings of this study have significant implications for enhancing rice production and ensuring food security by controlling rice blast and developing resistant rice cultivars.

This study examined differences in middle-aged adults' preferred features of their current versus future residential environments and how these differences varied by health and social characteristics. A sample of 1,651 Korean middle-aged adults (aged 49-64) rated their preferences for each of 12 features (e.g., proximity to family/relatives, house price) regarding current and future residential environments, separately. Respondents considered "accessibility to health services" and "opportunity for leisure activities" more important for future residential environments than for current ones. Respondents with poorer health considered features that help them compensate for health decline more important, while those who contacted friends/neighbors more frequently and participated in more cultural activities considered features that help them maintain their social interactions more important for future residential environments than the past. Our findings identified middle-aged adults' various demands for residential features after retirement, which reflect their strategic reactions to future needs for successful adaptation in later years.

The Sogatella furcifera (Horváth) (Homoptera: Delphacidae) is a white-backed planthopper (WBPH) that causes "hopper burn" in rice, resulting in severe yield loss. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a well-known neurotransmitter that inhibits neurotransmission in insects by binding to specific receptors. In this study, we investigated the potential role of GABA in modulating rice resistance to WBPH and evaluated possible defense mechanisms. The experiment was conducted in green house in pots consist of four groups: control, GABA-treated, WBPH-infested, and WBPH-infested treated with GABA. Among the various tested concentration of GABA, 15 mM GABA was applied as a single treatment in water. The treatment was administered one week before WBPH infestation. The results revealed that 15 mM GABA treatment strongly increased WBPH resistance. A plate-based assay indicated that direct application of 15 mM GABA increased the mortality rate of WBPH and increased the damage recovery rate in rice plants. We found that GABA treatment increased the activation of antioxidant enzymes and reduced the reactive oxygen species content and malondialdehyde contents, and reduced the damage rate caused by WBPH. Interestingly, GABA-supplemented plants infested with WBPH exhibited increased phenylalanine ammonia-lyase and pathogenesis-related (PR) genes expression levels. GABA induced the accumulation of abscisic acid (ABA) and salicylic acid (SA) and enhanced the stomata closure and reduced leaf vessels to reduce water conductance during WBPH stress. Furthermore, we found that GABA application to the plant induced the expression of Jasmonic acid (JA) biosynthesis genes (LOX, AOS, AOC, and OPR) and melatonin biosynthesis-related genes (TDC, T5H, ASMT, and SNAT). Our study suggested that GABA increases resistance against WBPH infestation by regulating antioxidant defense system, TCA cycle regulation, phytohormonal signaling, and PR gene regulation.

OBJECTIVES: Caring for a spouse with Alzheimer's disease (AD) can elicit considerable distress but there are also positive moments. A growing body of work has examined caregivers' ambivalence in the care relationship and linked it to negative caregiver outcomes such as depression, but dyadic assessments of both parties' perspectives are missing. We examined ambivalence in both people with AD and their spousal caregivers, seeking to identify the correlates and well-being outcomes of such ambivalence in this unique context. METHODS: Participants included 72 couples managing early-stage AD. People with AD and spousal caregivers independently self-reported positive and negative relationship qualities (used to indirectly calculate their ambivalence) and life satisfaction. Caregivers reported both partners' demographic characteristics and their spouses' behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), focusing on memory-related behaviors and psychological symptoms. RESULTS: Path analyses revealed that the number and frequency of psychological symptoms in people with AD were positively associated with their own and caregivers' ambivalence. Caregivers' distress ratings of memory-related behaviors and psychological symptoms were positively associated with their ambivalence. Greater ambivalence was associated with lower life satisfaction in both spouses. BPSD directly affected both spouses' life satisfaction but there were also indirect effects via ambivalence. DISCUSSION: This study utilizes a dyadic approach to assess ambivalence in dementia care. Findings reveal the conflicting emotions that couples experience as they cope with early-stage AD, identify sources of such ambivalence, and shed light on the development of dyadic interventions that can promote positive outcomes in both partners.

Objectives: Childhood maltreatment can negatively impact cognitive development, including executive function, working memory, and processing speed. This study investigated the impact of childhood maltreatment on cognitive function in young adults using various measurements, including computerized tests, and their relationship with emotional dysregulation. Methods: We recruited 149 healthy individuals with and without maltreatment experiences and used the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale IV (WAIS-IV) and a computerized battery to analyze cognitive function. Results: Both the WAIS-IV and computerized tests revealed that individuals with a history of childhood maltreatment had decreased cognitive function, especially in terms of working memory and processing speed. These individuals tended to employ maladaptive emotion regulation strategies. Among cognitive functions, working memory is negatively related to maladaptive emotion regulation strategies such as catastrophizing. Conclusion: This study highlights the effects of childhood maltreatment on cognitive function in young adulthood. Moreover, the study suggests clinical implications of cognitive interventions for improving emotion regulation and cognitive function in individuals with a history of childhood maltreatment.

The adsorption properties of CO2 on the SrTiO3(001) surface were investigated using ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy under elevated pressure and temperature conditions. On the Nb-doped TiO2-enriched (1 × 1) SrTiO3 surface, CO2 adsorption, i.e., the formation of CO3 surface species, occurs first at the oxygen lattice site under 10-6 mbar CO2 at room temperature. The interaction of CO2 molecules with oxygen vacancies begins when the CO2 pressure increases to 0.25 mbar. The adsorbed CO3 species on the Nb-doped SrTiO3 surface increases continuously as the pressure increases but starts to leave the surface as the surface temperature increases, which occurs at approximately 373 K on the defect-free surface. On the undoped TiO2-enriched (1 × 1) SrTiO3 surface, CO2 adsorption also occurs first at the lattice oxygen sites. Both the doped and undoped SrTiO3 surfaces exhibit an enhancement of the CO3 species with the presence of oxygen vacancies, thus indicating the important role of oxygen vacancies in CO2 dissociation. When OH species are removed from the undoped SrTiO3 surface, the CO3 species begin to form under 10-6 mbar at 573 K, thus indicating the critical role of OH in preventing CO2 adsorption. The observed CO2 adsorption properties of the various SrTiO3 surfaces provide valuable information for designing SrTiO3-based CO2 catalysts.

Arsenic, a hazardous heavy metal with potent carcinogenic properties, significantly affects key rice-producing regions worldwide. In this study, we present a quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping investigation designed to identify candidate genes responsible for conferring tolerance to arsenic toxicity in rice (Oryza sativa L.) during the seedling stage. This study identified 17 QTLs on different chromosomes, including qCHC-1 and qCHC-3 on chromosome 1 and 3 related to chlorophyll content and qRFW-12 on chromosome 12 related to root fresh weight. Gene expression analysis revealed eight candidate genes exhibited significant upregulation in the resistant lines, OsGRL1, OsDjB1, OsZIP2, OsMATE12, OsTRX29, OsMADS33, OsABCG29, and OsENODL24. These genes display sequence alignment and phylogenetic tree similarities with other species and engaging in protein-protein interactions with significant proteins. Advanced gene-editing techniques such as CRISPR-Cas9 to precisely target and modify the candidate genes responsible for arsenic tolerance will be explore. This approach may expedite the development of arsenic-resistant rice cultivars, which are essential for ensuring food security in regions affected by arsenic-contaminated soil and water.

BACKGROUND: Contact immunotherapy using diphenylcyclopropenone (DPCP) is a recommended treatment for severe alopecia areata (AA); however, few clinical factors are known, and few standardized application methods affecting therapeutic efficacy have been devised. OBJECTIVE: To confirm the therapeutic response of DPCP immunotherapy in AA, first we analyze the factors influencing its outcome and patient satisfaction levels, after which we standardize the DPCP treatment method for better outcomes. METHODS: We utilized a nationwide questionnaire-based survey to assess patient satisfaction and undertook a medical record review involving 412 patients currently undergoing treatment for DPCP. RESULTS: The patients' mean age was 36.4 years, and 27% of the cases were diagnosed as AA in childhood. Treatment response was higher when DPCP was used to treat the entire scalp, including subclinical lesions, and longer treatment durations and longer intervals between treatments were associated with a better treatment response. Atopy (atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis and bronchial asthma), thyroid disorder, and extent of hair loss were all negatively correlated with the treatment response. However, there was no correlation between the treatment response and factors such as the age of onset, a family history of AA, nail changes, or AA duration, which are commonly known to be associated with a poor prognosis. CONCLUSION: DPCP immunotherapy is an effective treatment for AA, and the study demonstrated the factors affecting DPCP treatment response and patients' satisfaction and may contribute to standardizing the DPCP treatment method for better outcomes.

PURPOSE: Loneliness is a risk factor for mental and physical disorders. Rapid individualization, with increasing associated social burden, is a contributing factor to loneliness among Koreans. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between loneliness and mental disorders, as well as to determine whether long-term loneliness is a factor predicting the occurrence of mental disorders in adults. METHODS: The National Mental Health Survey of Korea 2021, a nationally representative survey on mental disorders, was conducted. Responses from 5511 participants were collected using the Korean version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders fourth edition, Structured Clinical Interview for Internet Gaming Disorder, and the World Health Organization Adult Attention-deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) self-report scale. Loneliness and its duration were investigated among these participants. RESULTS: Loneliness was reported by approximately 2.9% of the general population. Loneliness was associated with an increased adulthood prevalence of alcohol use disorders, nicotine use disorders, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, adult ADHD, and internet gaming disorders. Long-term loneliness was significantly associated with an elevated risk of alcohol use disorders, nicotine use disorders, depressive disorders, and anxiety disorders. Internet gaming disorder was associated with loneliness lasting > 1 year. CONCLUSION: Various adult psychiatric disorders were associated with loneliness. The significant dose-effect relationship indicated the importance of early detection of and intervention for loneliness to reduce its negative consequences on mental health.

This study investigates the impact of anthocyanin treatment on rice plants under drought stress, focusing on phenotypic, molecular, and biochemical responses. Anthocyanin were treated to one month old plants one week before the droughtexposure. Drought stress was imposed by using 10% polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000). Anthocyanin-treated plants exhibited significant enhancements in various traits, including growth parameters and reproductive characteristics, under normal conditions. When subjected to drought stress, these plants displayed resilience, maintaining or improving essential morphological and physiological features compared to non-treated counterparts. Notably, anthocyanin application mitigated drought-induced oxidative stress, as evidenced by reduced levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lipid membrane peroxidation. The study also elucidates the regulatory role of anthocyanins in the expression of flavonoid biosynthetic genes, leading to increased levels of key secondary metabolites. Furthermore, anthocyanin treatment influenced the levels of stress-related signaling molecules, including melatonin, proline, abscisic acid (ABA), and salicylic acid (SA), contributing to enhanced stress tolerance. The enzymatic activity of antioxidants and the expression of drought-responsive genes were modulated by anthocyanins, emphasizing their role in antioxidant defense and stress response. Additionally, anthocyanin treatment positively influenced macronutrient concentrations, particularly calcium ion (Ca+), potassium ion (K+), and sodium ion (Na+), essential for cell wall and membrane stability. The findings collectively highlight the multifaceted protective effects of anthocyanins, positioning them as potential key players in conferring resilience to drought stress in rice plants. The study provides valuable insights into the molecular and physiological mechanisms underlying anthocyanin-mediated enhancement of drought stress tolerance, suggesting promising applications in agricultural practices for sustainable crop production.

The importance of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in plants has been highlighted due to its critical role in mitigating metal toxicity, specifically countering the inhibitory effects of copper stress on rice plants. This study involved pre-treating rice plants with 1 mM GABA for one week, followed by exposure to varying concentrations of copper at 50 µM, 100 µM, and 200 µM. Under copper stress, particularly at 100 µM and 200 µM, plant height, biomass, chlorophyll content, relative water content, mineral content, and antioxidant activity decreased significantly compared to control conditions. However, GABA treatment significantly alleviated the adverse effects of copper stress. It increased plant height by 13%, 18%, and 32%; plant biomass by 28%, 52%, and 60%; chlorophyll content by 12%, 30%, and 24%; and relative water content by 10%, 24%, and 26% in comparison to the C50, C100, and C200 treatments. Furthermore, GABA treatment effectively reduced electrolyte leakage by 11%, 34%, and 39%, and the concentration of reactive oxygen species, such as malondialdehyde (MDA), by 9%, 22%, and 27%, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) by 12%, 38%, and 30%, and superoxide anion content by 8%, 33, and 39% in comparison to C50, C100, and C200 treatments. Additionally, GABA supplementation led to elevated levels of glutathione by 69% and 80%, superoxide dismutase by 22% and 125%, ascorbate peroxidase by 12% and 125%, and catalase by 75% and 100% in the C100+G and C200+G groups as compared to the C100 and C200 treatments. Similarly, GABA application upregulated the expression of GABA shunt pathway-related genes, including gamma-aminobutyric transaminase (OsGABA-T) by 38% and 80% and succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase (OsSSADH) by 60% and 94% in the C100+G and C200+G groups, respectively, as compared to the C100 and C200 treatments. Conversely, the expression of gamma-aminobutyric acid dehydrogenase (OsGAD) was downregulated. GABA application reduced the absorption of Cu2+ by 54% and 47% in C100+G and C200+G groups as compared to C100, and C200 treatments. Moreover, GABA treatment enhanced the uptake of Ca2+ by 26% and 82%, Mg2+ by 12% and 67%, and K+ by 28% and 128% in the C100+G and C200+G groups as compared to C100, and C200 treatments. These findings underscore the pivotal role of GABA-induced enhancements in various physiological and molecular processes, such as plant growth, chlorophyll content, water content, antioxidant capacity, gene regulation, mineral uptake, and copper sequestration, in enhancing plant tolerance to copper stress. Such mechanistic insights offer promising implications for the advancement of safe and sustainable food production practices.

In this study, the complete plastome sequence of Nigella sativa (black seed), was analyzed for the first time. The plastome spans approximately 154,120 bp, comprising four sections: the Large Single-Copy (LSC) (85,538 bp), the Small Single-Copy (SSC) (17,984 bp), and two Inverted Repeat (IR) regions (25,299 bp). A comparative study of N. sativa's plastome with ten other species from various genera in the Ranunculaceae family reveals substantial structural variations. The contraction of the inverted repeat region in N. sativa influences the boundaries of single-copy regions, resulting in a shorter plastome size than other species. When comparing the plastome of N. sativa with those of its related species, significant divergence is observed, particularly except for N. damascena. Among these, the plastome of A. glaucifolium displays the highest average pairwise sequence divergence (0.2851) with N. sativa, followed by A. raddeana (0.2290) and A. coerulea (0.1222). Furthermore, the study identified 12 distinct hotspot regions characterized by elevated Pi values (> 0.1). These regions include trnH-GUG-psbA, matK-trnQ-UUG, psbK-trnR-UCU, atpF-atpI, rpoB-psbD, ycf3-ndhJ, ndhC-cemA, petA-psaJ, trnN-GUU-ndhF, trnV-GAC-rps12, ycf2-trnI-CAU, and ndhA-ycf1. Approximately, 24 tandem and 48 palindromic and forward repeats were detected in N. sativa plastome. The analysis revealed 32 microsatellites with the majority being mononucleotide repeats. In the N. sativa plastome, phenylalanine had the highest number of codons (1982 codons), while alanine was the least common amino acid with 260 codons. A phylogenetic tree, constructed using protein-coding genes, revealed a distinct monophyletic clade comprising N. sativa and N. damascene, closely aligned with the Cimicifugeae tribe and exhibiting robust support. This plastome provides valuable genetic information for precise species identification, phylogenetic resolution, and evolutionary studies of N. sativa.

This study investigated the hydrophobic-hydrophilic characteristics of zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod coatings for potential biomedical applications. We examined the effects of different alignments of ZnO nanorods on the wetting and mechanical characteristics of the coatings. ZnO seed layers were prepared on stainless-steel plates using atomic layer deposition (ALD) at five different temperatures ranging from 50 to 250 °C. The ZnO nanorod coatings were then deposited on these seed layers through chemical bath deposition. The polycrystalline structure of the seed layers and the morphology of the nanorods were analyzed using grazing incidence angle x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Mechanical and wetting properties of the nanorod coatings were examined using nanoindentation and water-droplet tests. The seed layers produced at 50 and 250 °C showed stronger (0 0 2) peaks than the other layers. ZnO nanorods on these seed layers exhibited greater vertical orientation and lower water contact angles indicating a more hydrophilic surface. Additionally, vertically oriented nanorod coatings demonstrated greater elastic modulus and hardness than those of oblique nanorods. Our findings indicate that ALD technology can be used to control the spatial arrangement of ZnO nanorods and optimize the hydrophobic-hydrophilic and mechanical properties of coating surfaces.

OBJECTIVE: The introduction of psychotherapy in palliative and end-of-life care settings has become increasingly common and is effective in decreasing many psychological problems. This review reports the characteristics and effectiveness of individual psychotherapeutic interventions for patients receiving palliative and end-of-life care. In addition, the review reports the effectiveness of psychotherapies considering the expected life expectancy. METHODS: The PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for English-language articles published between January 2000 to May 2023. RESULTS: Twenty-six studies were included and classified into a total of nine types of psychotherapies, namely, dignity therapy (DT), life review therapy, narrative therapy, managing cancer and living meaningfully (CALM), individual meaning-centered psychotherapy, meaning and purpose therapy, meaning-making therapy, meaning-of-life therapy, and cognitive therapy. CONCLUSION: Most of the psychotherapies provided to patients receiving palliative and end-of-life care showed effectiveness in the reduction of negative emotions and positive factors related to end-of-life issues. Most studies targeted patients with advanced cancer; however, studies on DT did not limit the target group to patients with cancer. Considering the expected life expectancy, CALM was found to be suitable for patients receiving early palliative care.

OBJECTIVES: Cultural reproduction theory posits that cultural resources are transmitted across generations, suggesting early parental influences on cultural experiences in adulthood. Further, cultural resources may be transferred within the same generation-through significant others, such as spouses. This study investigates cultural engagement among middle-aged adults, focusing on individual and spousal influences of childhood cultural engagement. METHODS: A sample of 1,271 couples (age 49-66) from the 2012 Korean Baby Boomer Panel Study and the Korean Forgotten Generation Study was analyzed. Each respondent reported the number of arts and cultural activities (e.g., paintings, literature, and classical music) and levels of perceived cultural engagement (i.e., cultural awareness) during childhood and at midlife. Actor-partner interdependence models (APIMs) were estimated to examine how spouses' childhood and midlife cultural engagement were linked within couples. RESULTS: Findings showed that wives reported higher levels of activity participation and cultural awareness in childhood and midlife, compared to husbands. The APIM results indicated that beyond one's own childhood cultural engagement, spouse's childhood cultural awareness was associated with both levels of participation in arts and cultural activities (only for husbands) and cultural awareness (for both husbands and wives) at midlife. DISCUSSION: Cultural activities and awareness can be valuable assets to enhance overall well-being in later life. Given the cross-spousal associations in cultural engagement among Korean middle-aged couples, both spouses' cultural resources need to be considered for the design of interventions and policies to cultivate cultural competence and promote cultural engagement in adulthood.

PURPOSE: Lucid episodes (LEs: unexpected episodes of spontaneous, meaningful, and relevant communication or behavior) in Alzheimer disease and related dementias are a new area of scientific inquiry that lacks clinical consensus and require more conceptual attention. METHODS: We aimed to measure consensus from an expert group on: (1) potential medical or clinical explanations for LEs; (2) necessary medical and clinical context to LEs; and (3) interpretation of LEs. PATIENTS: We convened 13 experts from different disciplines (neurology, psychiatry, psychology, pharmacy, palliative care, hospice, nursing, social work, primary care, geriatrics, and professional home caregivers) to identify elements of LEs. RESULTS: Experts provided a range of opinions on medical and clinical explanations and questions to understand LEs. Consensus on LEs when presented with clinical vignettes was not reached. Panelists highlighted key medical and contextual factors needed to make a definitive judgement about LEs. CONCLUSION: There is variability in how LEs are interpreted by clinical experts, which complicates the identification of LEs in Alzheimer disease and related dementias.
