BACKGROUND: Asymmetry in involuntary trunk motion during voluntary movements of the lower extremities is a risk factor for musculoskeletal injuries and may be related to core stability. Core stability plays a pivotal role in maintaining postural stability during distal segment movements. Because mediolateral head motion partially represents trunk motion during rhythmic movements, controlling it can help ensure symmetric trunk motion. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between core stability and asymmetric trunk motion during rhythmic movements, and to evaluate the effects of feedback music on mediolateral head motion. METHODS: We developed a system that uses a wireless earbud and a high-resolution inertial measurement unit sensor to measure head angle and provide feedback music. When the head angle exceeds a predefined threshold, the music is muted in the earbud on the side of the head tilt. In our lab-based study, we measured head angles during cycling at 70% of maximum speed using this self-developed system, and compared them between individuals with good (Sahrmann core stability test: 2-5 level) and poor core stability (0-1 level). The amplitude of mediolateral head motion was represented by the difference between the left and right peak angles, and the symmetry in mediolateral head motion was represented by the average of left and right peak angles. RESULTS: Individuals with poor core stability demonstrated significantly greater amplitude of, and less symmetry in, mediolateral head motion than those with good core stability. Additionally, feedback music significantly reduced the amplitude of mediolateral head motion in both the good- and poor-core-stability groups. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that core stability is crucial for maintaining symmetric head motion during rhythmic movements like cycling. Feedback music could serve as an effective tool for promoting symmetry in head motion and thus preventing musculoskeletal injuries.

Background/Aims: : The relationship between genetic polymorphisms and gastric inflammation remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of genetic polymorphisms on Helicobacter pylori (HP)-associated gastritis according to sex. Methods: : Two hundred thirty-two male and 404 female subjects with current HP infection were prospectively enrolled. The genotyping of IL-1B-511 C/T, IL-1RN variable number of tandem repeats, IL-6-572 G/C, IL-8-251 A/T, IL-8-781 C/T, IL-10-1082 G/A, IL-10-592 C/A, TNF-A-308 G/A, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-B-509 C/T, was determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. The degree of monocyte or neutrophil infiltration, atrophic gastritis, and intestinal metaplasia was evaluated using the updated Sydney system. Results: : Among the male subjects, moderate/severe atrophic gastritis of the corpus was higher in IL-1B-511 CC carriers than in CT and TT carriers independent of age, alcohol consumption, and HP virulence factors (26.9% vs 10.4%; adjusted hazard ratio [HR], 4.377; 95% confidence interval, 1.387 to 13.814). In females, IL-8-251 AA carriers were independently and significantly associated with moderate/severe atrophic gastritis of the corpus compared with that in AT and TT carriers (21.4% vs 6.0%, adjusted HR=3.799). In males, the IL-8-251 TT genotype was associated with moderate/severe intestinal metaplasia of the corpus compared with the AT and AA genotypes (13.4% vs 5.6%, adjusted HR=3.128), while the IL-10-592 CA and CC genotypes were associated with moderate/severe monocyte infiltration of the antrum compared with AA genotype (83.6% vs 71.8%, adjusted HR=2.227). Conclusions: : Genetic polymorphisms in cytokines play different roles in HP-associated gastritis according to sex.

BACKGROUND: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated gastric cancer (EBVaGC) has been reported to account for approximately 5-16% of all GCs with good prognosis compared to EBV-negative GC. We evaluated the clinicopathological characteristics of EBVaGC including survival rate in South Korea. METHODS: A total of 4,587 patients with GC who underwent EBV in situ hybridization (EBV-ISH) were prospectively enrolled at the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital from 2003 to 2021. Age, sex, smoking status, cancer type and stage, tumor size and location, histological type, molecular features and survival information were analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 456 patients with GC (9.9%) were positive for EBV. The EBVaGC group displayed a higher proportion of males (P < 0.001), a predominant presence in the proximal stomach (P < 0.001), a higher proportion of undifferentiated cancer (P < 0.001), and a lower cancer stage (P = 0.004) than the EBV-negative group. Cox multivariate analyses revealed age (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.025, P < 0.001), tumor size (HR = 1.109, P < 0.001), and cancer stage (stage2 HR = 4.761, P < 0.001; stage3 HR = 13.286, P < 0.001; stage4 HR = 42.528, P < 0.001) as significant risk factors for GC-specific mortality, whereas EBV positivity was inversely correlated (HR = 0.620, P = 0.022). Furthermore, the EBVaGC group displayed statistically significant survival advantages over the EBV-negative cancer group in terms of both overall (P = 0.021) and GC-specific survival (P = 0.007) on the Kaplan-Meier survival curve. However, this effect was evident only in males. CONCLUSIONS: EBVaGC patients showed better prognoses despite their association with proximal location and poorly differentiated histology in male, probably due to the difference in immunity between males and females.

The electrical properties of (Ba0.7Sr0.3-xCax)(Ti0.9Zr0.1)O3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2) (BSCTZ) ceramics prepared using citrate gelation (CG) method were investigated by substituting Ca2+ ions for the Sr2+ sites based on the structural characteristics of the ceramics. BSCTZ was sintered for 3 h at 1300 °C, lower than the temperature (1550 °C) at which the specimens prepared using the solid-state reaction (SSR) method were sintered, which lasted for 6 h. As the amount of substituted Ca2+ ions increased, the unit cell volume of the BSCTZ decreased because of the smaller ionic radius of the Ca2+ ions compared to the Sr2+ ions. The dielectric constant of BaTiO3-based ceramics is imparted by factors such as the tetragonality and B-site bond valence of the ceramics. Although the ceramic tetragonality increased with Ca2+ ion substitution, the x = 0.05 specimens exhibited the highest dielectric constant. The decrease in the dielectric constant of the sintered x > 0.05 specimens was attributed to the increase in the B-site bond valence of the ABO3 perovskite structure. Owing to the large number of grain boundaries, the breakdown voltage (6.6839 kV/mm) of the BSCTZ prepared using the CG method was significantly improved in relation to that (2.0043 kV/mm) of the specimen prepared using the SSR method.

BACKGROUND: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has seen the emergence of numerous novel variants of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus. In this study, we compared the efficacy of three different forms of immunization against the wild-type, delta, and omicron variants of the virus: two doses of the BNT or AZ vaccine (BNT/BNT or AZ/AZ) as homologous vaccination, three doses of AZ/AZ/BNT as heterologous vaccination, and naturally occurring immunization in severe COVID-19 cases. METHODS: We collected serum samples from vaccine recipients (67 receiving BNT/BNT, 111 receiving AZ/AZ, and 18 receiving AZ/AZ/BNT) and 46 patients who were admitted to the hospital with severe COVID-19. Blood samples were taken one month after the last injection and the efficacy of the vaccination was determined using the surrogate virus neutralization test (sVNT), with a positive result defined as an inhibition rate of over 30%. Serum samples from COVID-19 patients were taken at various points during their hospitalization and tested for inhibition rates. RESULTS: Our results indicated that there was no notable difference in the levels of neutralizing antibodies (nAb) in vaccine recipients and patients against the wild-type and delta variants. However, when it came to the omicron variant, the vaccine recipients had significantly lower nAb titers. Among the vaccine recipients, those who received a booster dose of BNT after their first two doses of AZ (AZ/AZ/BNT) demonstrated the highest level of protection against the omicron variant at 44.4%, followed closely by the COVID-19 patients. In analyzing the serial samples taken from hospitalized COVID-19 patients, we observed that their inhibition rates against the wild-type and delta variants improved over time, while the inhibition rate against the omicron variant decreased. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, our findings suggest that heterologous booster vaccination after primary vaccination produces higher nAb titers and provides a higher level of protection against the omicron variant compared to primary vaccination alone. This protective effect was similar to that observed in patients with severe COVID-19.

Objective: Core stability assessment is paramount for the prevention of low back pain, with core stability being considered as the most critical factor in such pain. The objective of this study was to develop a simple model for the automated assessment of core stability status. Methods: To assess core stability-defined as the ability to control trunk position relative to the pelvic position - we used an inertial measurement unit sensor embedded within a wireless earbud to estimate the mediolateral head angle during rhythmic movements (RMs) such as cycling, walking, and running. The activities of muscles around the trunk were analyzed by an experienced, highly trained individual. Functional movement tests (FMTs) were performed, including single-leg squat, lunge, and side lunge. Data was collected from 77 participants, who were then classified into good and poor core stability groups based on their Sahrmann core stability test scores. Results: From the head angle data, we extrapolated the symmetry index (SI) and amplitude of mediolateral head motion (Amp). Support vector machine and neural network models were trained and validated using these features. In both models, the accuracy was similar across three feature sets for RMs, FMTs, and full, and support vector machine accuracy (∼87%) is greater than neural network (∼75%). Conclusion: The use of this model, trained with head motion-related features obtained during RMs or FMTs, can help to accurately classify core stability status during activities.

Sarcopenia and obesity are emerging as major social problems. In this study, we examined whether Gryllus bimaculatus (GB), an edible insect, prevents dexamethasone-induced muscle atrophy (sarcopenia) or high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity in mice. We generated a standard chow diet (SCD) + GB (85% SCD and 15% GB powder) and HFD + GB (85% HFD and 15% GB powder). SCD + GB feeding increased gains in body weight and white adipose tissue (WAT). Despite no difference in weight change between HFD + GB- and HFD-fed mice, HFD + GB feeding aggravated insulin resistance compared with HFD feeding. SCD + GB or HFD + GB feeding did not change most gene expressions in the liver and WAT but did increase MyHC1 expression in the muscle, meaning that GB increased muscle generation. Therefore, we fed SCD + GB with dexamethasone, which induces muscle degeneration. As a result, muscle fiber size increased, as did grip strength compared with dexamethasone-injected mice. In addition, SCD + GB reduced the expression of muscle degradation factors, such as atrogin1 and muscle RING-finger protein 1 (MuRF1). Furthermore, SCD + GB feeding increased Akt, mTOR, and p70S6K phosphorylation and MyHC1 expression, meaning that it may have increased protein synthesis. In conclusion, GB has great potential for inhibiting dexamethasone-induced muscle mass loss by increasing muscle protein synthesis and inhibiting muscle protein degradation.

Histologically, ampullary carcinomas (ACs) can be classified into intestinal (INT-AC) and pancreatobiliary (PB-AC) subtypes. However, the prognostic implications of these subtypes remain unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the histopathologic phenotype of ACs on survival following pancreaticoduodenectomy. We searched PubMed, Embase, and Medline for studies published in English from 1994 to 2021. A meta-analysis was performed using Review Manager 5.3. The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS). We identified 3,890 articles; of these, 37 articles involving 3,455 participants (1,659 INT-ACs and 1,796 PB-ACs) were included. Patients in the PB-ACs group had significantly shorter OS than those in the INT-ACs group (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.79, 95% confidence interval [95% CI]: 1.51-2.13, p < 0.001, I2 = 61%). A similar tendency was observed in the immunohistochemistry staining group (HR: 1.76, 95% CI: 1.33-2.33, p < 0.001, I2 = 67%), which included 24 studies and 1,638 patients, and the non-immunohistochemistry group (HR: 1.84, 95% CI: 1.53-2.22, p = 0.04, I2 = 46%), which included 13 studies and 1,817 patients. Subgroup analysis revealed that patients with PB-AC had higher frequencies of advanced (III, IV) and pT3-4 stage AC, lymph node metastasis, poorly differentiated tumor, positive surgical margins, lymphovascular invasion, and perineural invasion, than those with INT-AC. Patients with PB-AC had a significantly shorter OS than those with INT-AC due to a higher aggressiveness. Because the histopathologic subtype is a major prognostic factor in patients with resected AC, routine histopathologic classification should be considered even in clinical settings without immunohistochemistry.

BACKGROUND: Aducanumab (Adu), which is a human IgG1 monoclonal antibody that targets oligomer and fibril forms of beta-amyloid, has been reported to reduce amyloid pathology and improve impaired cognition after administration of a high dose (10 mg/kg) of the drug in Alzheimer's disease (AD) clinical trials. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a lower dose of Adu (3 mg/kg) with enhanced delivery via focused ultrasound (FUS) in an AD mouse model. METHODS: The FUS with microbubbles opened the blood-brain barrier (BBB) of the hippocampus for the delivery of Adu. The combined therapy of FUS and Adu was performed three times in total and each treatment was performed biweekly. Y-maze test, Brdu labeling, and immunohistochemical experimental methods were employed in this study. In addition, RNA sequencing and ingenuity pathway analysis were employed to investigate gene expression profiles in the hippocampi of experimental animals. RESULTS: The FUS-mediated BBB opening markedly increased the delivery of Adu into the brain by approximately 8.1 times in the brains. The combined treatment induced significantly less cognitive decline and decreased the level of amyloid plaques in the hippocampi of the 5×FAD mice compared with Adu or FUS alone. Combined treatment with FUS and Adu activated phagocytic microglia and increased the number of astrocytes associated with amyloid plaques in the hippocampi of 5×FAD mice. Furthermore, RNA sequencing identified that 4 enriched canonical pathways including phagosome formation, neuroinflammation signaling, CREB signaling and reelin signaling were altered in the hippocami of 5×FAD mice receiving the combined treatment. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the enhanced delivery of a low dose of Adu (3 mg/kg) via FUS decreases amyloid deposits and attenuates cognitive function deficits. FUS-mediated BBB opening increases adult hippocampal neurogenesis as well as drug delivery. We present an AD treatment strategy through the synergistic effect of the combined therapy of FUS and Adu.

Core stability has been described as the product of motor control and muscular capacity of the lumbopelvic-hip complex. Because of the wide range of functions of the lumbopelvic-hip complex, the gold standard for evaluating core stability remains controversial. The Sahrmann core stability test (SCST), used in conjunction with the stabilizer pressure biofeedback unit (PBU), is widely applied to objectively evaluate core stability as this pertains lumbopelvic motor control. However, the association between such control and other elements of core stability including core strength, endurance, and dynamic stability during gait has not been well-studied. We investigated the relationships among the ability to control the lumbopelvic complex, core strength and endurance, and gait parameters. We compared lateral core endurance, hip strengths, and gait parameters (lateral oscillation of the center of mass (COM), the single support time, and the peak ground reaction force) between good and poor core stability groups, as determined by the SCST. In addition, logistic regression analysis was used to determine whether other core stability measures correlated with the core stability status defined by the SCST. Only lateral oscillation of the COM during walking differed significantly between the good and poor core stability groups and was a significant predictor of SCST core stability status. Lumbopelvic motor control, (as defined by the SCST), affects dynamic stability during gait, but not to the strength or endurance of the core musculatures.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children and adults (MIS-C/A) was rarely reported as a complication of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and potential adverse events following COVID-19 vaccination. Recently, the case definition of MIS-C/A was developed by the Brighton Collaboration Network. However, only a limited number of adult patients with MIS-A following immunization have been reported, and there is still little evidence for adequate treatment. A 57-year-old man presented with fever, headache, vomiting, and hypotension 24 days after receiving the second COVID-19 vaccination with the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. According to the Brighton Collaboration Case Definition, the patient met a definitive case of MIS-A after vaccination (level 1 of diagnostic certainty). After administration of medium-dose prednisolone (20 mg/d) with colchicine (1.2 mg/d), all symptoms and signs improved rapidly. The dose of prednisolone was gradually tapered from the third week, and the patient confirmed a full recovery without medication after 8 weeks. This is the first report showing that low-dose steroids in combination with colchicine may be an effective treatment option for MIS-A after vaccination.

Liquid metal is a promising conductor material for producing soft and stretchable circuit "boards" that can enable next-generation electronics by electrically connecting and mechanically supporting electronic components. While liquid metal in general can be used to fabricate soft and stretchable circuits, magnetic liquid metal is appealing because it can be used for self-healing electronics and actuators by external magnetic fields. Liquid metal can be rendered into particles that can then be used for sensors and catalysts through sonication. We used this feature to produce "novel" conductive and magnetic particles. Mixing ferromagnetic iron particles into the liquid metal (gallium) produces conductive ferrofluids that can be rendered into gallium-coated iron particles by sonication. The gallium shell of the particles is extremely soft, while the rigid iron core can induce high friction in response to mechanical pressure; thus, hand-sintering of the particles can be used to directly write the conductive traces when the particles are cast as a film on elastic substrates. The surface topography of the particles can be manipulated by forming GaOOH crystals through sonication in DI water, thus resulting in nonwettable circuit boards. These gallium-coated iron particles dispersed in uncured elastomer can be assembled to form conductive microwires with the application of magnetic fields.

BACKGROUND: Serology testing is useful to determine the past infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). METHODS: We evaluated the comparative performance of a newly developed neutralizing antibody test (R-FIND SARS-CoV-2 Neutralizing Antibody ELISA, SG Medical, Seoul, Korea) and a rapid fluorescence immunoassay (FREND™ COVID-19 SP, NanoEntek, Hwaseong, Korea) for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein antibody. They were compared with cPass™ SARS-CoV-2 Neutralization Antibody Detection Kit (Genscript Biotech, Piscataway, NJ, USA) and ADVIA Centaur SARS-CoV-2 Total (COV2T) (Siemens Healthineers, Erlangen, Germany). Forty COVID-19 samples and 80 negative samples were collected after nucleic acid tests. RESULTS: The positive percent agreement (%) of the kit in samples from 6 - 7 days, 8 - 14 days, and 15 - 45 days after symptom onset were as follows: R-FIND (83.3, 76.9, 95.2), cPass (83.3, 69.2, 90.5), FREND (66.6, 84.6, 100), and COV2T (66.6, 69.2, 76.2). The negative percent agreement (%) was 100, 97.5, 92.5, and 100 for R-FIND, cPass, FREND, and COV2T. The total agreement rate between the neutralizing antibody kits (R-FIND and cPass) was 96.7%. FREND showed high agreement with two neutralizing antibody kits (96.7% for R-FIND and 93.3% for cPass). CONCLUSIONS: R-FIND Neutralizing Antibody and FREND COVID-19 SP showed comparable detecting ability to commercial tests.

This study was conducted to evaluate whether Allium hookeri can control diabetic symptoms. Aqueous extract (AE1: 100 mg/kg BW, AE2: 200 mg/kg BW) and ethanol extract (EE1: 100 mg/kg BW, EE2: 200 mg/kg BW) of A. hookeri were orally administrated to diabetic mice (C57BL/J-db/db) for 8 weeks. The negative (NC) and the positive (PC) control groups were treated with 0.9% saline and metformin (150 mg/kg BW), respectively. Glucose and lipid profile (triglyceride, total cholesterol (TC), LDL-C, and HDL-C) as biochemical parameters, toxicological factors such as liver/kidney functional parameters (ALT, AST, BUN, and Cr), and NK cell activity in blood were measured. Oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and histopathological examination were also conducted. Compared with the NC group, AE and EE decreased blood glucose, HbA1c, area under the curve (AUC) during OGTT, and leptin levels while increasing adiponectin levels. Serum lipid profiles and toxicological factors levels were reduced by the A. hookeri extract. Interestingly, HDL-C, glomerular mesangial expansion score in the kidney, and NK cell activity were effectively controlled in EE groups. Based on the results, EE is considered to be more effective in reducing high blood glucose, lipid profile, and related factor levels than AE, and is comparable to metformin in some biomarkers. It can be presumed that EE can more effectively control the major anomalies in the diabetic model than AE, and it may be used to prevent diabetic symptoms without toxicity in the Type 2 diabetic model.

The present study was performed to investigate the validity of a wireless earbud-type inertial measurement unit (Ear-IMU) sensor used to estimate head angle during four workouts. In addition, relationships between head angle obtained from the Ear-IMU sensor and the angles of other joints determined with a 3D motion analysis system were investigated. The study population consisted of 20 active volunteers. The Ear-IMU sensor measured the head angle, while a 3D motion analysis system simultaneously measured the angles of the head, trunk, pelvis, hips, and knees during workouts. Comparison with the head angle measured using the 3D motion analysis system indicated that the validity of the Ear-IMU sensor was very strong or moderate in the sagittal and frontal planes. In addition, the trunk angle in the frontal plane showed a fair correlation with the head angle determined with the Ear-IMU sensor during a single-leg squat, reverse lunge, and standing hip abduction; the correlation was poor in the sagittal plane. Our results indicated that the Ear-IMU sensor can be used to directly estimate head motion and indirectly estimate trunk motion.

Physical activity is important for positive health outcomes, and wearable activity devices are useful for tracking physical activity patterns and energy expenditure. This study investigated differences in, and correlations of, duration of physical activity according to activity intensity and energy expenditure among community-dwelling older adults with different levels of frailty. This cross-sectional study enrolled 88 adults older than 65 years from communities between June 2019 and January 2020. The participants were divided into non-frail, pre-frail, and frail groups according to the frailty criteria. Outcomes included the frailty score, duration of physical activity according to the intensity of activity (sedentary, light, fairly active, fairly to very active, and very active), and energy expenditure measured by a consumer wearable device. The duration of physical activity according to the intensity of activity and energy expenditure were compared among non-frail, pre-frail, and frail groups. In addition, linear correlation analysis was used to identify significant associations of objectively measured physical activity and energy expenditure with frailty. Non-frail older adults showed significantly longer daily duration of light to very active physical activity and increased energy expenditure compared to the frail group (P < .05). Additionally, non-frail older adults engaged in significantly more light and fairly to very active physical activity, and showed increased energy expenditure, compared to the pre-frail group (P < .05). The non-frail group showed a significantly lower duration of sedentary behavior compared to the pre-frail group. Correlation analysis showed that frailty was significantly associated with decreased light to very active physical activity and energy expenditure, as well as increased sedentary behavior (P < .05). This study provides evidence of differences in objectively measured physical activity and energy expenditure between frail and non-frail older adults, and reveals an association of frailty with physical activity and energy expenditure. Daily physical activity that exceeds low-intensity, low-energy expenditure activity should be encouraged among older adults with frailty.

To fabricate an efficient Cs ion adsorbent and prevent unexpected loss of Prussian blue (PB) colloidal particles during use, PB was immobilized on the surface of electrospun mesoporous silica nanofibers (MSFs) via a newly developed method of double exposure to Fe (III) ions. To introduce PB on MSFs, the MSFs were functionalized with ethylenediamine moiety to bind to Fe (III) ions, which would firmly anchor PB. MSFs were pretreated with Fe (III) ions and exposed to K4 [Fe(II) (CN)6] to form PB. We found that this process did not provide a sufficient PB amount on the MSFs. To increase the PB amount, after initial PB formation, the MSFs were treated with Fe (III) ions again so that the unreacted K4 [Fe(II) (CN)6] remaining on the MSFs could become PB. An investigation of the adsorption isotherms and kinetics of the nanofibrous adsorbent indicated that monolayer chemisorption had occurred. The maximum Cs ion adsorption capacity using the method of double exposure to Fe (III) ions was determined to be 14.66 mg/g, which was higher by a factor of 2.24 than the case that was not prepared by this method. Cs ions were selectively adsorbed over other cations and could be removed in both acidic and basic conditions, presumably because of the robust MSFs.

Background: A slouched lumbar posture during sitting is risk factor for the low back pain (LBP). Various chairs have been used to maintain sagittal lumbar lordosis and sacral alignment during sitting. We aimed to demonstrate the effect of a pelvic-support chair on the lumbar lordosis and sacral tilt in patients with LBP. Methods: We recruited 29 patients with non-specific LBP and 11 healthy subjects in South Korea from Apr 2017 to Mar 2018. The sagittal lumbosacral alignment was examined radiographically in three sitting postures: usual, erect, and sitting in a pelvic-support chair. Five angles [the lumbar lordosis, upper lumbar (ULA), lower lumbar (LLA), lumbosacral (LSA), and sacral slope (SS) angles] were compared between the subjects with LBP and healthy subjects in the three sitting conditions. Results: There were significant differences in the lumbar lordosis, ULA, LLA, LSA, and SS according to sitting condition (P<.05). All five angles were significantly greater when participants sat erect or in a pelvic-support chair than in their usual sitting position (P<.05). ULA and SS were significantly greater when sitting erect than in a pelvic-support chair (P<.05). LLA was significantly greater in controls than in patients with LBP (P=.042). Conclusion: The sagittal alignment of the lumbosacral region differed significantly among usual, erect, and pelvic-support chair sitting in patients with LBP and controls. Decreased lordotic curve of the lumbar spine in the usual sitting position can be changed in both patients with LBP and healthy subjects by sitting with pelvic support chair.

The current study explored whether (i) abdominal muscle thickness differed between non-painful supine and painful sitting positions and (ii) the sitting position was more reliable and useful than the supine position to discriminate between people with and without prolonged sitting-induced lower back pain (LBP). Participants with and without prolonged sitting-induced LBP participated. The thickness of the transversus abdominis (TrA), internal oblique (IO), and external oblique (EO) muscles was measured using ultrasonography in supine, usual sitting, and upright sitting positions. Analysis of variance was used to compare muscle thickness among the positions. Intraclass correlation coefficients and receiver operating characteristic curves were used to determine which position reliably identified between group. The group with LBP showed significantly greater EO muscle thickness than that without LBP only in the upright sitting position. In the group without LBP, the TrA thickness was significantly greater in the usual and upright sitting positions than in the supine position, but there was no significant difference in TrA thickness among three positions in LBP group. Only EO thickness in the upright sitting position significantly predicted prolonged sitting-induced LBP. The current study suggests that clinicians should assess abdominal activation patterns in the upright sitting rather than supine position before applying abdominal muscle motor control training for patients with prolonged sitting-induced LBP, and to distinguish between those with and without prolonged sitting-induced LBP.
