RESUMEN

We report on a combined experimental and numerical study of photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) induced by intense few-cycle laser pulses, using methyloxirane as the molecular example. Our experiments reveal a remarkably pronounced sensitivity of the PECD strength of double-ionization on the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of the laser pulses. By comparison to the simulations, which reproduce the measured CEP-dependence for specific orientations of the molecules in the lab frame, we attribute the origin of the observed CEP-dependence of PECD to the CEP-induced modulation of ionization from different areas of the wave functions of three dominant orbitals.

RESUMEN

In this work, we introduce a simplified approach to efficiently extend the high harmonic generation (HHG) cutoff in gases without the need for laser frequency conversion via parametric processes. Instead, we employ postcompression and red-shifting of a Yb:CaF2 laser via stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in a nitrogen-filled stretched hollow core fiber. This driving scheme circumvents the low-efficiency window of parametric amplifiers in the 1100-1300 nm range. We demonstrate this approach being suitable for upscaling the power of a driver with an optimal wavelength for HHG in the highly desirable XUV range between 200 and 300 eV, up to the carbon K-edge. Due to the combination of power scalability of a low quantum defect ytterbium-based laser system with the high conversion efficiency of the SRS technique, we expect a significant increase in the generated photon flux in comparison with established platforms for HHG in the water window. We also compare HHG driven by the SRS scheme with the conventional self-phase modulation (SPM) scheme.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary arterial hypertension restricts the ability of patients to perform routine physical activities. As part of pulmonary arterial hypertension treatment, inhaled iloprost can be administered via a nebulizer that tracks inhalation behavior. Pulmonary arterial hypertension treatment is guided by intermittent clinical measurements, such as 6-minute walk distance, assessed during regular physician visits. Continuous digital monitoring of physical activity may facilitate more complete assessment of the impact of pulmonary arterial hypertension on daily life. Physical activity tracking with a wearable has not yet been assessed with simultaneous tracking of pulmonary arterial hypertension medication intake. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to digitally track the physical parameters of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension who were starting treatment with iloprost using a Breelib nebulizer. The primary objective was to investigate correlations between changes in digital physical activity measures and changes in traditional clinical measures and health-related quality of life over 3 months. Secondary objectives were to evaluate inhalation behavior, adverse events, and changes in heart rate and sleep quality. METHODS: We conducted a prospective, multicenter observational study of adults with pulmonary arterial hypertension in World Health Organization functional class III who were adding inhaled iloprost to existing pulmonary arterial hypertension therapy. Daily distance walked, step count, number of standing-up events, heart rate, and 6-minute walk distance were digitally captured using smartwatch (Apple Watch Series 2) and smartphone (iPhone 6S) apps during a 3-month observation period (which began when iloprost treatment began). Before and at the end of the observation period (within 2 weeks), we also evaluated 6-minute walk distance, Borg dyspnea, functional class, B-type natriuretic peptide (or N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide) levels, health-related quality of life (EQ-5D questionnaire), and sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index). RESULTS: Of 31 patients, 18 were included in the full analysis (observation period: median 91.5 days, IQR 88.0 to 92.0). Changes from baseline in traditional and digital 6-minute walk distance were moderately correlated (r=0.57). Physical activity (daily distance walked: median 0.4 km, IQR -0.2 to 1.9; daily step count: median 591, IQR -509 to 2413) and clinical measures (traditional 6-minute walk distance: median 26 m, IQR 0 to 40) changed concordantly from baseline to the end of the observation period. Health-related quality of life showed little change. Total sleep score and resting heart rate slightly decreased. Distance walked and step count showed short-term increases after each iloprost inhalation. No new safety signals were identified (safety analysis set: n=30). CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that despite challenges, parallel monitoring of physical activity, heart rate, and iloprost inhalation is feasible in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension and may complement traditional measures in guiding treatment; however, the sample size of this study limits generalizability. OBJECTIVE: Early diagnosis of atrial fibrillation (AFib) is a priority for stroke prevention. We sought to test four commercial pulse detection systems (CPDSs) for ability to distinguish AFib from normal sinus rhythm using a published algorithm (Zhou et al., PLoS One 2015;10:e0136544), compared with visual diagnosis by electrocardiogram inspection. METHODS: BAYathlon was a prospective, non-interventional, single-centre study. Adult cardiology patients with documented AFib or sinus rhythm who were due to have a routine 5-min electrocardiogram were randomized to undergo a parallel 5-min pulse assessment with a Polar V800, eMotion Faros 360, TomTom heart rate monitor, or Adidas miCoach Smart Run. RESULTS: 144 patients (73 with AFib, 71 with sinus rhythm (based on electrocardiograms); median age: 73 years; 53.5% male) were analysed. Algorithm sensitivities (primary endpoint) and specificities for AFib when applied to CPDS recordings were 93.3% and 94.1% with the Polar V800, 90.0% and 84.2% with the eMotion Faros 360, and 0% and 100% with the other CPDSs (analysis period: 127 heart rate signals + 2 min). When applied to routine electrocardiograms, the algorithm correctly detected AFib in 71/73 patients. Different analysis periods (127 heart rate signals +1 or 3 min) only slightly changed the sensitivities with the Polar V800 and eMotion Faros 360 and had no effect on the sensitivities with the other CPDSs. CONCLUSION: AFib screening using the applied algorithm is feasible with the Polar V800 and eMotion Faros 360 (which provide RR interval data) but not with the other CPDSs (which provide pre-processed heart rate time series).ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02875106.

We report on an experimental and theoretical study of the ionization-fragmentation dynamics of argon dimers in intense few-cycle laser pulses with a tagged carrier-envelope phase. We find that a field-driven electron transfer process from one argon atom across the system boundary to the other argon atom triggers subcycle electron-electron interaction dynamics in the neighboring atom. This attosecond electron-transfer process between distant entities and its implications manifests itself as a distinct phase-shift between the measured asymmetry of electron emission curves of the Ar^{+}+Ar^{2+} and Ar^{2+}+Ar^{2+} fragmentation channels. This letter discloses a strong-field route to controlling the dynamics in molecular compounds through the excitation of electronic dynamics on a distant molecule by driving intermolecular electron-transfer processes.

We establish a generalized picture of the phase sensitivity of laser-induced directional bond breaking using the H_{2} molecule as the example. We show that the well-known proton ejection anisotropy measured with few-cycle pulses as a function of their carrier-envelope phases arises as an amplitude modulation of an intrinsic anisotropy that is sensitive to the laser phase at the ionization time and determined by the molecule's electronic structure. Our work furthermore reveals a strong electron-proton correlation that may open up a new approach to experimentally accessing the laser-sub-cycle intramolecular electron dynamics also in larger molecules.

We report on the unambiguous observation of the subcycle ionization bursts in sequential strong-field double ionization of H_{2} and their disentanglement in molecular frame photoelectron angular distributions. This observation was made possible by the use of few-cycle laser pulses with a known carrier-envelope phase, in combination with multiparticle coincidence momentum imaging. The approach demonstrated here will allow sampling of the intramolecular electron dynamics and the investigation of charge-state-specific Coulomb distortions on emitted electrons in polyatomic molecules.

Climatic conditions changing over time and space shape the evolution of organisms at multiple levels, including temperate lizards in the family Lacertidae. Here we reconstruct a dated phylogenetic tree of 262 lacertid species based on a supermatrix relying on novel phylogenomic datasets and fossil calibrations. Diversification of lacertids was accompanied by an increasing disparity among occupied bioclimatic niches, especially in the last 10 Ma, during a period of progressive global cooling. Temperate species also underwent a genome-wide slowdown in molecular substitution rates compared to tropical and desert-adapted lacertids. Evaporative water loss and preferred temperature are correlated with bioclimatic parameters, indicating physiological adaptations to climate. Tropical, but also some populations of cool-adapted species experience maximum temperatures close to their preferred temperatures. We hypothesize these species-specific physiological preferences may constitute a handicap to prevail under rapid global warming, and contribute to explaining local lizard extinctions in cool and humid climates.

RESUMEN

We introduce and experimentally demonstrate a method where the two intrinsic timescales of a molecule, the slow nuclear motion and the fast electronic motion, are simultaneously measured in a photoelectron photoion coincidence experiment. In our experiment, elliptically polarized, 750 nm, 4.5 fs laser pulses were focused to an intensity of 9×10^{14} W/cm^{2} onto H_{2}. Using coincidence imaging, we directly observe the nuclear wave packet evolving on the 1sσ_{g} state of H_{2}^{+} during its first round-trip with attosecond temporal and picometer spatial resolution. The demonstrated method should enable insight into the first few femtoseconds of the vibronic dynamics of ionization-induced unimolecular reactions of larger molecules.

RESUMEN

A high-power continuous-wave coherent light source at 253.7 nm is described. It is based on a solid-state Yb:YAG disk laser with two successive frequency doubling stages and is capable of generating stable output powers of up to 750 mW. Spectroscopy of the 6 (1)S(0)-6 (3)P(1) transition of mercury has been demonstrated.
