This study performed a back-trajectory analysis to determine the influence of transboundary transport on the extent of aerosol pollution in South Korea, based on 5-year PM2.5 measurements (2015-2019) in five cities covering South Korea. A transboundary transport case was selected if a back trajectory passed over a dedicated region (BOX 1 and BOX 2) in the Yellow Sea. First, we found that the frequency of transboundary transport largely increases in the high pollution case, and this pattern is almost consistent for all months and all five cities, indicating the importance of investigating the horizontal direction of air mass movement associated with PM2.5, which has been discussed extensively in previous studies. In this study, we also examined the altitude change and straight moving distance (defined as travel distance) of back trajectories regarding the extent of local PM2.5. Consequently, we found that back trajectories in high aerosol pollution showed much lower altitudes and shorter travel differences, implying a significant contribution of surface emissions and stagnant air conditions to severe aerosol pollution. As a result, the local PM2.5 level was not significantly enhanced when the air mass passed over the Yellow Sea if transboundary transport occurred at high altitudes with rapid movement (i.e., high altitude and long travel distance back-trajectory). Based on these results, we suggest utilizing the combined information of the horizontal direction, altitude variation, and length of back trajectories to better evaluate transboundary transport.

Deep convection in the Asian summer monsoon is a significant transport process for lifting pollutants from the planetary boundary layer to the tropopause level. This process enables efficient injection into the stratosphere of reactive species such as chlorinated very-short-lived substances (Cl-VSLSs) that deplete ozone. Past studies of convective transport associated with the Asian summer monsoon have focused mostly on the south Asian summer monsoon. Airborne observations reported in this work identify the East Asian summer monsoon convection as an effective transport pathway that carried record-breaking levels of ozone-depleting Cl-VSLSs (mean organic chlorine from these VSLSs ~500 ppt) to the base of the stratosphere. These unique observations show total organic chlorine from VSLSs in the lower stratosphere over the Asian monsoon tropopause to be more than twice that previously reported over the tropical tropopause. Considering the recently observed increase in Cl-VSLS emissions and the ongoing strengthening of the East Asian summer monsoon under global warming, our results highlight that a reevaluation of the contribution of Cl-VSLS injection via the Asian monsoon to the total stratospheric chlorine budget is warranted.

Objective: The use of reconstructive treatment with a double-overlapping stents has proven to be effective and safe in the current treatment of intracranial vertebral artery dissecting aneurysms (VADAs). We employed a combination of overlapping stents, using low-profile visualized intraluminal support (LVIS) within the Enterprise stent. This combination was chosen to minimize the outward bulging of the inner LVIS by overlapping it with the Enterprise stent while maintaining flow diversion and stability. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and angiographic outcomes following the use of double-overlapping stents with LVIS within the Enterprise stent for the treatment of VADAs. Methods: From March 2016 to January 2022, total 28 patients with unruptured VADAs were treated with the double-overlapping stent technique using LVIS within an Enterprise stent in our institute. The Enterprise stent was deployed first, followed by the LVIS stent. Patient clinical and angiographic characteristics, procedural complications, and follow-up outcomes were retrospectively reviewed. Results: All 28 patients (18 males and 10 females) were successfully treated with double-overlapping stent deployment. There were no procedural complications or new neurological deficits in any patient. Of the 28 patients, four VADAs had posterior inferior cerebellar artery involvement. Procedure-related parent artery occlusion did not occur during the angiographic follow-up conducted 6 to 12 months after the procedure. Out of 28 patients, 24 showed complete healing, three had focal residual stenosis or dilatation with residual sac and only one had a residual dissecting flap with aneurysm. All patients, including the four patients, did not require any additional procedures. The postoperative modified Rankin Scale (mRS) scores were 0-1 for all patients. Conclusion: A double-overlapping stent, with a flow-diversion effect, is a safe and effective treatment for patients with VADAs. In particular, when using the LVIS stent within an Enterprise stent, it minimizes the bulging of the inner LVIS stent while maintaining flow diversion and stability. Therefore, both can be effectively utilized as overlapping stents.

This retrospective study investigated whether repetitive exposure to intravenous iodinated contrast media (ICM) affects long-term renal function in patients who undergo curative surgery for early gastric cancer (EGC) collected from the Korean Health Insurance and Review Assessment (HIRA) database. Patients diagnosed with gastric cancer between January 2010 and December 2013 underwent regular computed tomography (CT) scans to monitor for extragastric recurrence. Patients who already had chronic kidney disease (CKD) before cancer diagnosis or had undergone chemotherapy or repeated surgery were excluded. A nested case-control study design was chosen to analyze the effect of repetitive ICM exposure to long-term renal function by comparing patients who developed CKD 2 years after cancer diagnosis and patients who did not. Among 59,971 patients collected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, 1021 were diagnosed with CKD 2 years after cancer diagnosis. Using 1:5 matching after adjusting for age, sex and date of cancer diagnosis, 5097 control patients were matched to 1021 CKD patients. Conditional logistic regression showed that the number of CTs taken using ICM slightly increased the odds of CKD (odds ratio, 1.080; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.059, 1.100; P < 0.0001). Thus, the administration of ICM might contribute to chronic renal function impairment.

PURPOSE: Neurogenic pulmonary edema (NPE) combined with Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) is a rare condition associated with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Although several mechanisms have been proposed, the pathophysiology and management strategies are not yet fully established. We aimed to determine the radiological and clinical outcomes of patients with NPE and with TCM after aSAH to propose management strategies. METHODS: We analyzed the data of 564 patients with aSAH recorded at a single medical center from February 2015 to July 2022. This study retrospectively investigated the incidence and demographics of SAH combined with both NPE and TCM and the clinical outcomes of the patients. Correlating factors, independently associated with NPE-TCM, were also investigated. RESULTS: During the 7 years, 11 (2.0%) of 564 patients had NPE complicated with TCM after aSAH. Seven of 11 (63.6%) patients had poor-grade SAH (Hunt-Hess Grade 4 to 5). Three of 11 patients had a posterior circulation in the NPE-TCM group. The most prevalent treatment option was endovascular coil embolization, except for one case of clip. Long-term outcomes were favorable in 6 of 11 patients, and there was one case of mortality. Age, troponin I level, and alveolar-arterial oxygen gradient were correlating factors of NPE-TCM. CONCLUSION: Although NPE-TCM represents a rare complication associated with aSAH, achieving active resolution of underlying neurological causes through early and appropriate treatment may contribute to a favorable prognosis. Considering the limited incidence of SAH complicated with NPE-TCM, a multi-center study may be needed.

Objective: Gamma Knife Radiosurgery (GKRS) is an effective and noninvasive treatment for high-risk arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). Since differences in GKRS outcomes by nidus type are unknown, this study evaluated GKRS feasibility and safety in patients with brain AVMs. Methods: This single-center retrospective study included patients with AVM who underwent GKRS between 2008 and 2021. Patients were divided into compact- and diffuse-type groups according to nidus characteristics. We excluded patients who performed GKRS and did not follow-up evaluation with MRI or DSA within 36 months from the study. We used univariate and multivariate analyses to characterize associations of nidus type with obliteration rate and GKRS-related complications. Results: We enrolled 154 patients (mean age, 32.14±17.17 years; mean post-GKRS follow-up, 52.10±33.67 months) of whom 131 (85.1%) had compact- and 23 (14.9%) diffuse-type nidus AVMs. Of all AVMs, 89 (57.8%) were unruptured, and 65 (42.2%) had ruptured. The mean Spetzler-Martin AVM grades were 2.03±0.95 and 3.39±1.23 for the compact- and diffuse-type groups, respectively (p<0.001). During the follow-up period, AVM-related hemorrhages occurred in four individuals (2.6%), three of whom had compact nidi. Substantial radiation-induced changes and cyst formation were observed in 21 (13.6%) and 1 (0.6%) patients, respectively. The AVM complete obliteration rate was 46.1% across both groups. Post-GKRS complication and complete obliteration rates were not significantly different between nidus types. For diffuse-type nidus AVMs, larger AVM size and volume (p<0.001), lower radiation dose (p<0.001), eloquent area location (p=0.015), and higher Spetzler-Martin grade (p<0.001) were observed. Conclusion: GKRS is a safe and feasible treatment for brain AVMs characterized by both diffuse- and compact-type nidi.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate whether quantitative water fraction parameters could predict fracture age in patients with benign vertebral compression fractures (VCFs). METHODS: A total of 38 thoracolumbar VCFs in 27 patients imaged using modified Dixon sequences for water fraction quantification on 3-T MRI were retrospectively reviewed. To calculate quantitative parameters, a radiologist independently measured the regions of interest in the bone marrow edema (BME) of the fractures. Furthermore, five features (BME, trabecular fracture line, condensation band, cortical or end plate fracture line, and paravertebral soft-tissue change) were analyzed. The fracture age was evaluated based on clear-onset symptoms and previously available images. A correlation analysis between the fracture age and water fraction was evaluated using a linear regression model, and a multivariable analysis of the dichotomized fracture age model was performed. RESULTS: The water fraction ratio was the only significant factor and was negatively correlated with the fracture age of VCFs in multiple linear regression (p = 0.047), whereas the water fraction was not significantly correlated (p = 0.052). Water fraction and water fraction ratio were significant factors in differentiating the fracture age of 1 year in multiple logistic regression (odds ratio 0.894, p = 0.003 and odds ratio 0.986, p = 0.019, respectively). Using a cutoff of 0.524 for the water fraction, the area under the curve, sensitivity, and specificity were 0.857, 85.7%, and 87.1%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Water fraction is a good imaging biomarker for the fracture healing process. The water fraction ratio of the compression fractures can be used to predict the fracture age of benign VCFs.

North Korea's air quality is poorly understood due to a lack of reliable data. Here, we analyzed urban- to national-scale air quality changes in North Korea using multi-year satellite observations. Pyongyang, Nampo, Pukchang, and Munchon were identified as pollution hotspots. On a national scale, we found that North Korea experienced 6.7, 17.8, and 20.6 times greater amounts of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and carbon monoxide (CO) per unit primary energy supply (PES) than South Korea from 2005 to 2018. Besides, North Korea had a 24.3 times larger aerosol optical depth (AOD) per PES than South Korea from 2011 to 2018. Severe CO and aerosol pollution is aligned with extensive biofuel combustion. High SO2 pollution corresponds with the strong coal dependence of the industry. The change rates of the national average columns for NO2, SO2, and CO were + 3.6, -4.4, and -0.4 % yr-1, respectively. The AOD change rate was -4.8 % yr-1. Overall decreasing trends, except for NO2, are likely due to a decline in coal-fired PES. Positive NO2 trends are consistent with increasing industrial activities. Each pollutant showed consistent patterns of linear trends, even after correcting the influence of transboundary pollution. Flue gas control and biofuel consumption reduction seem necessary to improve North Korea's air quality.

Using ozonesonde measurements from 2015 to 2018 at the Jang Bogo station located in the southeastern Antarctic region, we evaluate ozone profiles retrieved from the three satellite measurements that are widely used: Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI), Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS), and Ozone Mapping Profiler Suite (OMPS) data. For the fair validation, ozonesonde profiles are smoothed using the weighting function of each satellite retrieval algorithm (i.e., convolution process). Compared with limb-viewing MLS and OMPS ozone profiles, the OMI ozone profiles are relatively less qualified: coarser vertical resolution and larger inter-annual variation. Nevertheless, our validation reveals that the quality of all three satellite ozone profiles looks comparable; In general, difference from ozonesonde profile is ∼1 ppm absolutely, and -20 to 30% relatively at maximum. This quantitative range well corresponds to previous work, meaning that our new validation confirms the reliability of satellite ozone profiles in the southeastern Antarctic region where the measurement data for the validation were not enough. Another interesting feature is the role of a priori ozone profile; Nadir-viewing OMI satellite can have qualified ozone profiles by a proper assumption of a priori ozone profile. Since the performance of limb-viewing ozone profiles is better, however, the careful usage of nadir-viewing ozone profile is still required. We think that the simultaneous usage of multiple satellite ozone profiles can contribute to better understanding of Antarctic ozone characteristics.

Dimethyl sulfide (DMS) produced by marine algae represents the largest natural emission of sulfur to the atmosphere. The oxidation of DMS is a key process affecting new particle formation that contributes to the radiative forcing of the Earth. In this study, atmospheric DMS and its major oxidation products (methanesulfonic acid, MSA; non-sea-salt sulfate, nss-SO42-) and particle size distributions were measured at King Sejong station located in the Antarctic Peninsula during the austral spring-summer period in 2018-2020. The observatory was surrounded by open ocean and first-year and multi-year sea ice. Importantly, oceanic emissions and atmospheric oxidation of DMS showed distinct differences depending on source regions. A high mixing ratio of atmospheric DMS was observed when air masses were influenced by the open ocean and first-year sea ice due to the abundance of DMS producers such as pelagic phaeocystis and ice algae. However, the concentrations of MSA and nss-SO42- were distinctively increased for air masses originating from first-year sea ice as compared to those originating from the open ocean and multi-year sea ice, suggesting additional influences from the source regions of atmospheric oxidants. Heterogeneous chemical processes that actively occur over first-year sea ice tend to accelerate the release of bromine monoxide (BrO), which is the most efficient DMS oxidant in Antarctica. Model-estimates for surface BrO confirmed that high BrO mixing ratios were closely associated with first-year sea ice, thus enhancing DMS oxidation. Consequently, the concentration of newly formed particles originated from first-year sea ice, which was a strong source area for both DMS and BrO was greater than from open ocean (high DMS but low BrO). These results indicate that first-year sea ice plays an important yet overlooked role in DMS-induced new particle formation in polar environments, where warming-induced sea ice changes are pronounced.

OBJECTIVES: To compare the efficacies of catheter-directed sclerotherapy (CDS) with 99% ethanol and surgery for ovarian endometrioma and their impact on the ovarian reserve. METHODS: From January 2011 to June 2019, 71 patients who underwent surgical excision (n = 51) or CDS (n = 20) for symptomatic ovarian endometriomas were reviewed. To analyze the effect on the ovarian reserve, serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels were compared before and after the procedure. Symptoms, serum cancer antigen 125 (CA-125), lesion size, recurrence, hospitalization, and complications were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: During a mean follow-up of 22.3 months (range, 6 to 94 months), no significant difference in symptom relief was found between CDS and surgery (95.0% [19/20] and 92.2% [47/51], respectively, p > 0.999). The hospital stay was shorter with CDS than with surgery (2.6 ± 0.6 days and 4.1 ± 0.5 days, respectively, p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in serum AMH levels before and after CDS (2.3 (interquartile range (IQR) 1.1-5.3) ng/mL and 2.6 (IQR 0.9-4.9) ng/mL, respectively, p = 0.243), but there was a significant decrease in serum AMH in the surgery group (3.0 (IQR 1.3-5.5) ng/mL and 1.6 (IQR 0.7-3.2) ng/mL, respectively, p < 0.001). CA-125 decreased in both CDS and surgery groups (p = 0.001 and < 0.001, respectively). Two minor complications occurred in the surgery group, while no complication was observed in the CDS group. CONCLUSIONS: The therapeutic efficacy of CDS appears to be comparable to that of surgical resection for ovarian endometrioma. Ovarian function was well-preserved, and a shorter hospital stay was required in patients who underwent CDS. KEY POINTS: • There was no significant difference in symptom relief between CDS and surgery (95.0% [19/20], 92.2% [47/51], respectively, p >0.999). • No significant difference in serum AMH levels was seen before and after CDS (2.3 (1.1, 5.3)* ng/mL, 2.6 (0.9, 4.9)* ng/mL, respectively, p = 0.243), whereas serum AMH levels significantly decreased after surgical resection (3.0 (1.3, 5.5)* ng/mL, 1.6 (0.7, 3.2)* ng/mL, respectively, p <0.001). *Median (25 quartiles, 75 quartiles) • The hospitalization period was shorter with CDS than with surgery (2.6 ± 0.6 days, 4.1 ± 0.5 days, respectively, p <0.001).

By using multiple satellite measurements, the changes of the aerosol optical depth (AOD) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) over South Korea were investigated from January to March 2020 to evaluate the COVID-19 effect on the regional air quality. The NO2 decrease in South Korea was found but not significant, which indicates the effects of spontaneous social distancing under the maintenance of ordinary life. The AODs in 2020 were normally high in January, but they became lower starting from February. Since the atmosphere over Eastern Asia was unusually stagnant in January and February 2020, the AOD decrease in February 2020 clearly reveals the positive effect of the COVID-19. Considering the insignificant NO2 decrease in South Korea and the relatively long lifetime of aerosols, the AOD decrease in South Korea may be more attributed to the improvement of the air quality in neighboring countries. In March, regional atmosphere became well mixed and ventilated over South Korea, contributing to large enhancement of air quality. While the social activity was reduced after the COVID-19 outbreak, the regional meteorology should be also examined significantly to avoid the biased evaluation of the social impact on the change of the regional air quality.

Vertical column density (VCD) of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) was measured using Pandora spectrometers at six sites on the Korean Peninsula during the Megacity Air Pollution Studies-Seoul (MAPS-Seoul) campaign from May to June 2015. To estimate the tropospheric NO2 VCD, the stratospheric NO2 VCD from the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) was subtracted from the total NO2 VCD from Pandora. European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis wind data was used to analyze variations in tropospheric NO2 VCD caused by wind patterns at each site. The Yonsei/SEO site was found to have the largest tropospheric NO2 VCD (1.49 DU on average) from a statistical analysis of hourly tropospheric NO2 VCD measurements. At rural sites, remarkably low NO2 VCDs were observed. However, a wind field analysis showed that trans-boundary transport and emissions from domestic sources lead to an increase in tropospheric NO2 VCD at NIER/BYI and KMA/AMY, respectively. At urban sites, high NO2 VCD values were observed under conditions of low wind speed, which were influenced by local urban emissions. Tropospheric NO2 VCD at HUFS/Yongin increases under conditions of significant transport from urban area of Seoul according to a correlation analysis that considers the transport time lag. Significant diurnal variations were found at urban sites during the MAPS-Seoul campaign, but not at rural sites, indicating that it is associated with diurnal patterns of NO2 emissions from dense traffic.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the visibility of breast tissue markers in cases of breast cancer on ultrasonography (US) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and to analyze whether the type of marker affected the choice of localization method after NAC. METHODS: We included 153 tissue markers inserted within breast cancers that showed pathologically complete response (pCR) after NAC from January 2012 to April 2017. One of three types of markers (a surgical clip, Cormark, or UltraClip) was inserted. Medical records and imaging findings were retrospectively reviewed. We compared the visibility of the different types of tissue markers on US after NAC, and also compared the imaging modalities used in the preoperative localization. The chi-square test, Fisher exact test, and multiple logistic regression were used for analysis. RESULTS: Of the 153 tissue markers, 56 were surgical clips, 61 Cormark, and 36 UltraClip. After NAC, residual lesions were not seen on US in 42 cases (27.5%). In multivariate analysis, the visibility of the surgical clips and Cormark markers was better than that of the UltraClip markers (odds ratio [OR], 5.467; 95% confidence interal [CI], 1.717 to 17.410; P=0.004 and OR, 3.045; 95% CI, 1.074 to 8.628; P=0.036, respectively). Among the 131 cases where localization targeting the marker was required, the proportion of US-guided localizations was significantly higher when a surgical clip was used than when an UltraClip marker was used (OR, 5.566; 95% CI, 1.610 to 19.246; P=0.007) in the multivariate analysis. CONCLUSION: The type of breast tissue marker affected its visibility on US in cases with pCR after NAC, which in turn affected the localization methodology.

The East China Plains (ECP) region experienced the worst haze pollution on record for January in 2013. We show that the unprecedented haze event is due to the extremely poor ventilation conditions, which had not been seen in the preceding three decades. Statistical analysis suggests that the extremely poor ventilation conditions are linked to Arctic sea ice loss in the preceding autumn and extensive boreal snowfall in the earlier winter. We identify the regional circulation mode that leads to extremely poor ventilation over the ECP region. Climate model simulations indicate that boreal cryospheric forcing enhances the regional circulation mode of poor ventilation in the ECP region and provides conducive conditions for extreme haze such as that of 2013. Consequently, extreme haze events in winter will likely occur at a higher frequency in China as a result of the changing boreal cryosphere, posing difficult challenges for winter haze mitigation but providing a strong incentive for greenhouse gas emission reduction.

The contributions of long range transported aerosol in East Asia to carbonaceous aerosol and particulate matter (PM) concentrations in Seoul, Korea were estimated with potential source contribution function (PSCF) calculations. Carbonaceous aerosol (organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC)), PM(2.5), and PM(10) concentrations were measured from April 2007 to March 2008 in Seoul, Korea. The PSCF and concentration weighted trajectory (CWT) receptor models were used to identify the spatial source distributions of OC, EC, PM(2.5), and coarse particles. Heavily industrialized areas in Northeast China such as Harbin and Changchun and East China including the Pearl River Delta region, the Yangtze River Delta region, and the Beijing-Tianjin region were identified as high OC, EC and PM(2.5) source areas. The conditional PSCF analysis was introduced so as to distinguish the influence of aerosol transported from heavily polluted source areas on a receptor site from that transported from relatively clean areas. The source contributions estimated using the conditional PSCF analysis account for not only the aerosol concentrations of long range transported aerosols but also the number of transport days effective on the measurement site. Based on the proposed algorithm, the condition of airmass pathways was classified into two types: one condition where airmass passed over the source region (PS) and another condition where airmass did not pass over the source region (NPS). For most of the seasons during the measurement period, 249.5-366.2% higher OC, EC, PM(2.5), and coarse particle concentrations were observed at the measurement site under PS conditions than under NPS conditions. Seasonal variations in the concentrations of OC, EC, PM(2.5), and coarse particles under PS, NPS, and background aerosol conditions were quantified. The contributions of long range transported aerosols on the OC, EC, PM(2.5), and coarse particle concentrations during several Asian dust events were also estimated. We also investigated the performance of the PSCF results obtained from combining highly time resolved measurement data and backward trajectory calculations via comparison with those from data in low resolutions. Reduced tailing effects and the larger coverage over the area of interest were observed in the PSCF results obtained from using the highly time resolved data and trajectories.

Stabilization of gamma-alumina suspension for chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) of copper was investigated. Citric acid and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) (M(w)=5000) were used as dispersant. The stability of suspension was evaluated from the changes in viscosity, particle size and zeta potential. It appears that metastable gamma-alumina mainly due to its high specific surface area and to the presence of aluminol groups on its surface is progressively transformed to bayerite (beta-Al(OH)(3)) by hydration procedure. Citric acid molecules were adsorbed onto gamma-alumina surface effectively and exhibited the excellent hydration inhibition effect. Although citrate-alumina surface complexes give barrier to the flocculation, the repulsion potential is based mainly on the electrostatic repulsion, thereby steric hindrance caused by the adsorption of these small molecules is very weak. The electrosteric repulsion, which provides more effective dispersion stability than electrostatic repulsion force, can be expected by using polyelectrolyte such as PAA; however, adsorbed layers of PAA onto solid/liquid interface are loosely formed. Therefore, a large amount of PAA was required to inhibit the surface hydration of gamma-alumina suspension, thereby the excess addition of PAA decreased the electrosteric repulsion and re-bridging of the dispersant between particles caused an increase in suspension viscosity. Therefore, synergistic effect can be expected in mixed dispersant system of citric acid and PAA, since small citric acid molecules are adsorbed faster than PAA, inhibiting the progress of surface hydration, and then adsorbed PAA layers exhibit the effective electrosteric repulsion interaction between particles with a small amount compared with PAA alone. It was revealed that the gamma-alumina slurry dispersed by mixed dispersant exhibited the improved removal rate of Cu layer by CMP polishing test.
