RESUMEN

[Purpose] This study aimed to clarify the effect of an adaptation of a deviation of the visual field in three axes on spatial cognition in patients with unilateral spatial neglect and distorted spatial perception in three dimensions. [Participants and Methods] Fifteen patients with cerebrovascular disease and symptoms of unilateral spatial neglect were included. Forty-eight pointing movements with a camera attached to a head-mounted display changed in three axes were compared with the control condition in which the camera was deflected only in the horizontal plane as with the prism adaptation. The main outcome measures were subjective straight-ahead pointing, line bisection, line cancellation, and star cancellation. [Results] The head-mounted display adaptive therapy was performed under conditions that varied in all three axes. The results indicated that it was possible to deflect the subjective straight-ahead pointing position to the lower left direction. [Conclusion] In contrast to the prism adaptation, which deflects the visual field in a single axis in the horizontal plane, the tri-axial adaptation corrected the median cognition in the left-right direction as well as the cognition of the body center, including the vertical direction.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to clarify which panoramic radiographic features can predict the development of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). METHODS: Participants included 24 patients treated with bisphosphonates (BP) for osteoporosis who developed osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ+ group). Controls included 179 patients treated with BP who did not have osteonecrosis (ONJ- group) and 200 patients with no history of BP administration (unmedicated group). The mandibular cortical width, mandibular cortical index (MCI), sclerosis of trabecular bone, and thickening of the lamina dura were evaluated on panoramic radiographs. RESULTS: The mandibular cortical width was significantly smaller in the ONJ- group than in the other groups. Class II MCI (semilunar defects of endosteal margin) was frequently noted on the affected and contralateral sides in the ONJ+ group but not in the ONJ- or unmedicated groups. Sclerosis of the trabecular bone was significantly more frequently observed on the affected side in the ONJ+ group than in the other groups. Thickening of the lamina dura was observed significantly more frequently in the BP-treated groups than in the unmedicated group. CONCLUSIONS: Class II MCI may be an indicator to predict the development of BRONJ. Sclerosis of trabecular bone was a characteristic imaging feature of BRONJ. Thickening of the lamina dura may be an imaging feature caused by BP administration.

RESUMEN

In plants, the photosystem I (PSI) core complex stably associates with its light-harvesting chlorophyll a/b complex I (LHCI) to form the PSI-LHCI supercomplex. The vascular plant PSI core complex associates with four distinct LHCI subunits, whereas that of the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii binds nine distinct LHCI subunits (LHCA1-LHCA9). The stoichiometry and configuration of these LHCI subunits in the PSI-LHCI supercomplex of C. reinhardtii remain controversial. Here, we determined the stoichiometry of the nine distinct LHCI subunits relative to PSI subunits through uniform labeling of total proteins using 14C. We separated the nine LHCI polypeptides by three different sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis systems. Our data revealed that the PSI-LHCI supercomplex contains two LHCA1 proteins and one of each of the other eight LHCI subunits. Subsequently, we identified their cross-linked products by immunodetection and mass spectrometry to determine the configuration of the 10 LHCI subunits within the PSI-LHCI supercomplex. Furthermore, analyses of PSI-LHCI complexes isolated from ΔLHCA2 and ΔLHCA5 mutants and oligomeric LHCI from a PSI-deficient (ΔpsaA/B) mutant provided supporting evidence for the LHCI subunit configuration. In conclusion, eight LHCI subunits bind to the PSI core at the site of PSAF subunit in two layers: LHCA1-LHCA8-LHCA7-LHCA3 from PSAG to PSAK, in the inner layer, and LHCA1-LHCA4-LHCA6-LHCA5 in the outer layer. The other two LHCI subunits, LHCA2 and LHCA9, bind PSAB between PSAG and PSAH, PSAG-LHCA9-LHCA2-PSAH. Our study provides new insights into the LHCI configuration linked to the PSI core.

RESUMEN

Patch grafts are widely used in various kind of vascular surgeries such as detect repair or dilation of vascular stenosis. Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) patches are flexible and handle well, but have shown problems with calcification as they are non-bioabsorbable and therefore permanently remain in the body. It is important to develop an alternative biocompatible patch. Silk fibroin (SF) was developed as a biocompatible material, but it lacks of the elasticity required for surgery as a patch. Polyurethane (PU) is also a well-known elastomer so this study focused on the SF and the PU blend materials with a weight ratio of 5:5 (SF/PU). To evaluate the SF/PU patch, the patches were implanted into the abdominal aortas of rats, using the ePTFE patch in the control group. Because it was more flexible the SF/PU patch was easier to implant than the ePTFE patch. At 1 week after implantation, the SF/PU patch had been infiltrated with cells and collagen fiber. The ePTFE control patch did not accumulate collagen fiber until 3 months and calcification occurred at 4 weeks. The SF/PU patch did not present any signs of calcification for 3 months. This study addressed the problems associated with using SF in isolation and showed that the SF/PU patch can be considered as a useful alternative to the ePTFE to overcome the problem of calcification.
