RESUMEN

This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation interventions in improving depression in patients with dementia. To achieve this objective, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were identified from primary electronic databases, focusing on the relationship between omega-3 fatty acids and depression in patients with dementia. The primary outcome was the impact of omega-3 fatty acids on post-intervention depression in patients with dementia, with subgroup analyses conducted based on the type of intervention (docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) combination), duration of intervention (3 months, 6 months, 12 months, ≥24 months), cognitive function (ranging from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to severe dementia), and daily dosage (high, medium, low, applicable to both DHA and EPA). The study has been duly registered with PROSPERO (registration ID: CRD42023408744). A meta-analysis of five studies (n = 517) included in nine systematic reviews showed that omega-3 supplementation had a non-significant trend toward affecting depressive symptoms in patients with dementia (standardized mean difference (SMD): 0.147; 95% confidence interval (CI): -0.324 to 0.049; p = 0.141). Subgroup analyses revealed that DHA supplementation significantly reduced depressive symptoms (SMD: -0.247; p = 0.039). There was no significant effect for high (SMD: -0.169; 95% CI: -0.454 to 0.116; p = 0.246) or medium (SMD: -0.061; 95% CI: -0.228 to 0.105; p = 0.470) doses of EPA. However, low doses of EPA were significantly effective (SMD: -0.953; 95% CI: -1.534 to -0.373; p = 0.001), with notable improvements in patients with MCI (SMD: -0.934; p < 0.001). The study concludes that omega-3 fatty acids, particularly through DHA supplementation, may alleviate depressive symptoms in patients with MCI. Given the limited sample size, further long-term RCTs are recommended to better understand the efficacy and optimal management of omega-3 supplementation in this population using different dosages.

The prevalence rate of neonatal jaundice can reach 80%, of which 5% may develop dangerous hemolytic jaundice. The blood test for obtaining bilirubin and hemoglobin concentration is the gold standard for diagnosing hemolytic jaundice; however, frequently drawing blood from jaundice neonates for the screening purpose is not practical. We have developed a handheld diffuse reflectance spectroscopy system to noninvasively determine the bilirubin and hemoglobin levels in neonates. Our study showed that the correlation coefficients were 0.95 and 0.80 for bilirubin and hemoglobin between the results from the blood tests and our handheld system, respectively. This handheld system could be an effective tool for screening hemolytic jaundice.

As Taiwan's society ages, Tribal Cultural Health Stations serve as in situ long-term care centers that are committed to building a long-term care service model for indigenous peoples based on cultural care. The cultural sensitivity, cultural ability, and tribal ability of long-term care planners and professional helpers remains insufficient, making it difficult to achieve the policy goals of "designing for the tribes and for the locals" and "creating a cultural care mechanism". However, based on a foundation of local blood and geo-relationship and through the care expertise and interpersonal network established through long-term tribal cultivation and service, a cultural care mechanism that meets local awareness, local needs, and human trust has been formed by expanding linkages among the resources of all local stakeholders. During the COVID-19 epidemic, this has helped facilitate the recovery of the emotional and physical health of older tribal adults. For example, caregivers have been able to help ease the anxieties among older adults in indigenous communities regarding vaccination, fear of infection, isolation, and interpersonal suspicions. In addition, the positive role of the tribal cultural care mechanism as a social safety valve during the pandemic has been demonstrated.

INTRODUCTION: This study compared the casualties and types of rescues conducted on the main climbing route (MCR) and accessory climbing routes (ACRs) in Yushan National Park (YSNP) between 2008 and 2019. METHODS: We collected the following information for all documented mountain rescue operations conducted on the MCRs and ACRs in YSNP between 2008 and 2019: accident location, casualty type, victim number, and type of rescue. The victims were categorized as to injury, illness, mortality, or no medical problem (NMP) groups according to their condition at the time of rescue. RESULTS: Two-hundred forty-four rescue operations involving 329 victims were conducted during the 12-y study period. Among them, 105 (32%) did not require medical treatment, 102 (31%) were injured, 82 (25%) were ill, and 40 (12%) were deceased. Of the 82 individuals with illness, 69 (84%) had acute altitude sickness. The accident and mortality rates on the ACRs were significantly higher than those on the MCR (P<0.001; χ2). The ACR incidents involved significantly higher percentages of helicopter-based rescues and victims in the NMP group (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Acute altitude sickness accounted for most of the rescues. ACRs had higher injury and mortality rates and required more helicopter-based rescues for patients who did not have medical problems. This study may serve as a reference to reduce casualties and overuse of helicopters by educating tourists on the appropriate use of maps and the evaluation of trails in relation to weather conditions.

Sea bass (Lates calcarifer) is rich in protein, amino acids, and long-chain omega 3 (omega-3), which have many health benefits. In East Asian food culture, soup is often eaten as a nutritional supplement. The purpose of this study was to investigate the benefits of Hi-Q sea bass essence (SBE) supplementation for improved exercise performance and anti-fatigue. Fifty male Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice were divided to five groups (10 mice/group) and administered different doses of SBE (EC): (1) vehicle (water); (2) isocaloric (0.94 g casein/kg/mice/day); (3) SBE-1X (1.04 g/kg/mice/day); (4) SBE-2X (2.08 g/kg/mice/day); and (5) SBE-4X (4.16 g/kg/mice/day). We found that SBE supplementation significantly improved more than 1.96-fold endurance exercise performance (p < 0.05) and more than 1.13-fold glycogen storage in the liver and muscles (p < 0.05), and had dose-dependent by SBE dose (p < 0.05). In addition, supplementation with SBE at different doses had significant effects on the fatigue-related biochemical markers, i.e., lactate, ammonia, and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels were reduced significantly (p < 0.05), and were also dose-dependent. In conclusion, supplementation with SBE for 4 weeks was able to effectively improve exercise performance and had an anti-fatigue effect. In addition, it did not cause any physiological or histopathological damage.

The Taiwan Tilapia is an important aquaculture product in Taiwan. The aquatic by-products generated during Tilapia processing, such as fish bones and skin, are rich in minerals and protein. We aimed to explore the effect of a dietary supplement, comprising a mixture of fermented Tilapia by-products and Monostroma nitidum oligosaccharides as the raw materials, combined with physical training on exercise performance and fatigue. We used a mouse model that displays a phenotype of accelerated aging. Male senescence-accelerated mouse prone-8 (SAMP8) mice were divided into two control groups-with or without physical training-and supplemented with different doses (0.5 times: 412 mg/kg body weight (BW)/day; 1 time: 824 mg/kg BW/day; 2 times: 1648 mg/kg BW/day) of fermented Tilapia by-products and Monostroma nitidum oligosaccharide-containing mixture and combined with exercise training groups. Exercise performance was determined by testing forelimb grip strength and with a weight-bearing exhaustive swimming test. Animals were sacrificed to collect physical fatigue-related biomarkers. Mice dosed at 824 or 1648 mg/kg BW/day showed improvement in their exercise performance (p < 0.05). In terms of biochemical fatigue indicators, supplementation of 824 or 1648 mg/kg BW/day doses of test substances could effectively reduce blood urea nitrogen concentration and lactate concentration and increase the lactate ratio (p < 0.05) and liver glycogen content post-exercise (p < 0.05). Based on the above results, the combination of physical training and consumption of a dietary supplementation mixture of fermented Tilapia by-products and Monostroma nitidum oligosaccharides could improve the exercise performance of mice and help achieve an anti-fatigue effect.

Canine babesiosis is a serious infectious disease in subtropical and tropical regions. Typically, clinical detection of canine babesiosis is performed by blood smear observation or the traditional polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Herein, we developed a new TaqMan-based real-time PCR assay combined with a customized portable real-time PCR platform for a rapid and accurate detection of canine babesiosis. Two new primer/probe pairs (B18S and BITS1) were designed based on 18S ribosomal RNA and an internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1) sequence to differentiate Babesia canis and B. gibsoni (Asian genotype) DNAs from canine blood samples. Additionally, a corresponding customized compact real-time PCR platform with low 6-carboxyfluorescein fluorescence detection (≤5 nM), including a fast and accurate thermal cycling ability with a user-friendly interface for thermal control and data analysis, was designed for the limited space use. Both assays (B18S and BITS1) demonstrated a sensitivity of 100 copies/reaction based on the 95 % confidence interval evaluation method. The self-developed customized portable real-time PCR analyzer presented high repeatability and reproducibility with the TaqMan-based assay. Moreover, 501 clinical specimens were collected for evaluating the performance of the proposed PCR. The positive and negative predictive values were 90 % (18 of 20) and 100 % (226 of 226), respectively, for samples suspected with B. canis infection and 98 % (55 of 56) and 100 % (199 of 199), respectively, for samples suspected with B. gibsoni infection.

In this study, electron beam lithography, rather than the most popular method, chemical synthesis, is used to construct periodical TiO(2) nanowires for a gas sensor with both robust and rapid performance. The effects of temperature on the sensing response and reaction time are analyzed at various operation temperatures ranging from 200 to 350 °C. At the optimized temperature of 300 °C, the proposed sensor repeatedly obtained a rise/recovery time (ΔR: 0.9 R(0) to 0.1 R(0)) of 3.2/17.5 s and a corresponding sensor response (ΔR/R(0)) of 21.7% at an ethanol injection mass quantity of 0.2 µg.

Mammalian cells are sensitive to extracellular microenvironments. In order to faithfully explore the physiological responses of cells to extracellular conditions, a steady, homogenous, and three-dimensional (3-D) culture environment is required because it can provide a more quantifiable and biologically-relevant culture condition. To achieve this, this study reports a perfusion micro cell culture platform encompassing 22 microbioreactor units for high throughput 3-D cell culture. The cell culture platform structurally consisting of a plug and a microbioreactor chamber module was simply fabricated by replica molding of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer. The platform features in the proposed plug module with multiple molds incorporated, facilitating the preparation of cell encapsulated 3-D hydrogel constructs in a precise and efficient manner. This trait is found particularly useful for high-precision and high-throughput micro 3-D cell culture-based assay. In this study, the real value of the proposed platform to maintain a stable and homogenous culture condition was discussed. Besides, the application of the presented platform for precisely investigating the effect of serum concentration on the metabolic activities and biosynthetic abilities of articular chondrocytes was also demonstrated. As a whole, the proposed device has paved an alternative route to carry out high throughput micro-scale 3-D perfusion cell culture in a simple, cost-effective and precise manner. The promising applications include 3-D cell culture-based high throughput drug or toxicity testing/screening, or other investigations on the cell biology, where the precise quantification of the links between the cellular responses and extracellular conditions is required.

This study reports a transparent indium tin oxide (ITO)-based microheater chip and its applicability for perfusion cell culture outside a cell incubator. The attempt of the proposed ITO microheater is to take the role of conventional bulky incubator for cell culture in order to improve integratability with the experimental setup for continuous/perfusion cell culture, to facilitate microscopic observation or other online monitoring activities during cell culture, or even to provide portability of cell culture operation. In this work, numerical simulation and experimental evaluation have been conducted to justify that the presented device is capable of providing a spatially uniform thermal environment and precise temperature control with a mild deviation of +/-0.2 degrees C, which is suitable for a general cell culture practice. Besides, to testify that the thermal environment generated by the presented device is well compatible with conventional cell incubator, chondrocyte perfusion culture was carried out. Results demonstrated that the physiology of the cultured chondrocytes on the developed ITO microheater chip was consistent with that of an incubator. All these not only demonstrate the feasibility of using the presented ITO microheater as a thermal control system for cell culture outside a cell incubator but also reveal its potential for other applications in which excellent thermal control is required.

A microfluidic device for generating monodisperse chitosan microparticles and separating the desired particle from smaller particles created as a byproduct of this process was described. The purpose of this study is to separate the satellite droplets from their parent droplets to enhance the size uniformity of the desired microparticles. A double T-junction design was first employed to control the emulsification and the separation, respectively. The results show that the size and gap of the parent droplets are tunable by adjusting the water and oil flow rates. A separation ratio of the satellite droplets of more than 99% was observed. The proposed microfluidic chip is capable of generating relatively uniform micro-droplets with well controllable diameter, and it has the added advantages of being a simple, low cost, and high throughput process. In the future this apparatus can be used to fabricate size-controlled monodisperse microparticles to act as drug carriers for biotechnology and biomedicine applications.

Leaf carbon isotope ratios and leaf mineral composition (Ca, K, Mg, Mn, N, and P) were measured on the dominant species along an irradiance cline in a subtropical monsoon forest of southern China. This irradiance cline resulted from disturbance caused by fuel-harvesting. Leaf carbon isotope ratios increased from undisturbed to disturbed sites for all species, indicating that leaf intercellular CO2 concentrations decreased and leaf water use efficiencies increased along this cline. Nitrogen and magnesium levels were lower in leaves of species on the disturbed sites, but there were no clear patterns for calcium, potassium, phosphorus or manganese.
