A study is presented of the thermal-mechanical noise and response to sound of microphones that are designed to be driven by the viscous forces in air rather than by sound pressure. Virtually all existing microphone designs are intended to respond to sound pressure. The structures examined here consist of thin, micro-scale, cantilever beams. The viscous forces that drive the beams are proportional to the relative velocity between the beams and fluid medium. The beams' movement in response to sound is similar to that of the air in a plane acoustic wave. The thermal-mechanical noise of these beams is found to be a very weak function of their width and length; the size of the sensing structure does not appear to significantly affect the performance. This differs from the well-known importance of the size of a pressure-sensing microphone in determining the pressure-referred noise floor. Creating microphones that sense fluid motion rather than pressure could enable a significant reduction in the size of the sensing element. Calculated results are revealed to be in excellent agreement with the measured pressure-referred thermal noise.

BACKGROUND: Uterine tumors resembling ovarian sex cord tumor (UTROSCT) is a rare neoplasm of unknown etiology and has undetermined malignant potential. The emergence of recurrent UTROSCT case reports has led to its initial identification as a tumor of low malignancy potential. Owing to its low incidence, we currently lack any in-depth studies regarding the subset of UTROSCTs that may be aggressive in nature. Here, we sought to identify unique characteristics in aggressive UTROSCT. METHODS: 19 cases of UTROSCT were collected. Their histologic and tumor immune microenvironment were evaluated by three gynecologic pathologists. The gene alteration was also detected by RNA sequencing. For later analyses regarding differences between benign and malignant tumors, we supplemented our 19 included cases with additional reports from the literature. RESULTS: Interestingly, we found PD-L1 expression in stromal tumor-infiltrating immune cells (stromal PD-L1) was markedly higher in aggressive UTROSCT. Patients with high stromal PD-L1 (≥ 22.5 cells/mm2) had worse prognosis. When our cases were added with previous cases identified in the literature, we discovered that aggressive UTROSCT was more likely to have significant mitotic activity and NCOA2 gene alterations than benign UTROSCT. Consistence with those results, patients with significant mitotic activity and gene alteration of NCOA2 had worse prognoses. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, high expression of stromal PD-L1, significant mitotic activity, and gene alteration of NCOA2 may be useful markers to predict aggressive UTROSCT.

SignificanceThe sense of hearing in all known animals relies on possessing auditory organs that are made up of cellular tissues and constrained by body sizes. We show that hearing in the orb-weaving spider is functionally outsourced to its extended phenotype, the proteinaceous self-manufactured web, and hence processes behavioral controllability. This finding opens new perspectives on animal extended cognition and hearing-the outsourcing and supersizing of auditory function in spiders. This study calls for reinvestigation of the remarkable evolutionary ecology and sensory ecology in spiders-one of the oldest land animals. The sensory modality of outsourced hearing provides a unique model for studying extended and regenerative sensing and presents new design features for inspiring novel acoustic flow detectors.

Background: The latest WHO classification of CNS tumors using the integrated phenotypic and molecular parameters (IDH, ATRX, 1p19q, TERT etc.) have reestablished the CNS tumors classification in addition to traditional histology. The establishment of glioma molecular typing can more accurately predict prognosis, better guide individualized treatment to improve survival. Methods: The expression of IDH1, ATRX, PHH3, P53 and Ki67 was detected by IHC. Molecular status of IDH1/2 and TERT were analyzed using Sanger sequencing. MGMT was explored using methylation-specific PCR. 1p/19q codeletion status was firstly detected by FISH, then further confirmed by multiplex PCR-based next generation sequencing. Results: The mutation frequency of IDH1 was 68.7% (79/115) in WHO II astrocytoma, and 82 cases (82/344, 23.8%) were "triple-negative glioma" in our cohort. Multivariate COX analysis revealed that only IDH, 1p/19q, TERT and MGMT were independent prognostic factors. Noteworthily, we found 7 cases of the new molecular phenotype presented as "IDH wildtype and 1p/19q codeletion", not mentioned in the latest WHO guideline. Conclusion: We detected the newly recommended markers in a large cohort of Chinese glioma patients. Our data demonstrated a relatively lower frequency of IDH mutations and a higher prevalence of triple-negative glioma in Chinese compared with American and European, indicating ethnic and geographical difference in some markers. In addition, the new molecular phenotype "IDH wildtype and 1p/19q codeletion" glioma deserved special focus. These findings suggest that further stratification of infiltrating gliomas is needed for different treatment strategy and precision medicine.
