Background: Surgical reconstruction is often necessary for severe tracheobronchial stenosis resulting from tuberculosis (TB). However, the long-term efficacy of this approach remains unclear. This study investigated the safety and long-term outcomes of surgery for severe post-TB tracheobronchial stenosis. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study of 48 patients with severe post-TB tracheobronchial stenosis who underwent surgical reconstruction between 2015 and 2018 in a TB-endemic region. Pre- and postoperative evaluations included Karnofsky performance status, modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea scale, spirometry, chest computed tomography (CT) scan, and bronchoscopy. The primary outcome was intervention-requiring restenosis over the long term. Results: The mean patient age was 30.6±9.9 years, with 91.7% females. Airway fibrosis was the predominant lesion (93.8%), affecting the bronchi (93.8%) and trachea (6.2%). All the patients underwent resection and anastomosis, and 56.2% required lobectomy. Postoperative complications occurred in 13 patients (27.1%), with prolonged air leaks being the most prevalent (12.5%). All complications resolved with conservative management. Significant improvements in performance status, dyspnea, and lung function were observed postoperatively and sustained for over 5 years. Within a median follow-up of 69 months, five cases of intervention-requiring restenosis occurred within the first year. The freedom from restenosis rate was 90% from 1 year onwards. Conclusions: Surgical reconstruction is safe and effective in treating severe post-TB tracheobronchial stenosis. Larger studies are required to validate these findings.

Female fertility preservation is a rapidly growing field in medicine. Oocyte cryopreservation and assisted reproductive technique with vitrified-warmed oocytes have been successful with in vivo matured oocytes after conventional ovarian stimulation protocols. The use of in vitro matured oocytes after vitrification and warming has been limited. Capacitation in vitro maturation (CAPA-IVM) represents the latest refinement of IVM protocols and provides in vitro matured oocytes with improved competence. This case report describes the first successful live birth following oocyte vitrification from a CAPA-IVM cycle. This milestone achievement holds a significant promise to expand fertility preservation options and improve accessibility for women wishing to cryopreserve their eggs for future use.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Vietnamese people use mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris L.) to treat arthritis and gout. Our previous research shows that mugwort contains flavonoids, and its extract possesses antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. However, no publications have been on the xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity of mugwort and acute anti-inflammatory activity in vivo. AIM OF THE STUDY: The study aimed to verify the antioxidant, xanthine oxidase inhibitory, and anti-inflammatory capabilities of mugwort extract in vitro and in vivo, isolate phyto-compounds from potential bioactive fractions, and then evaluate their potential in inhibiting xanthine oxidase. METHODS: According to established methods, the extract and the active flavonoids were obtained using different chromatographic techniques. DPPH, ABTS, reducing power, and H2O2 elimination were used to evaluate antioxidant activity. The model of LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells was used to measure the inhibition of NO production. The carrageenan-induced paw oedema model was used to assess acute inflammation in mice. In vitro, xanthine oxidase inhibition assay was applied to investigate the effects of extract/compounds on uric acid production. Chemical structures were identified by spectral analysis. RESULTS: The assessment of the acute inflammatory model in mice revealed that both the 96% ethanol and the 50% ethanol extracts significantly decreased oedema in the mice's feet following carrageenan-induced inflammation. 96% ethanol extract exhibited a better reduction in oedema at the low dose. The analysis revealed that the ethyl acetate fraction had the highest levels of total polyphenols and flavonoids. Additionally, this fraction demonstrated significant antioxidant activity in various assays, such as DPPH, ABTS, reducing power, and H2O2 removal. Furthermore, it displayed the most potent inhibition of xanthine oxidase, an anti-inflammatory activity. Five phytochemicals were isolated and determined from the active fraction such as luteolin (1), rutin (2), apigenin (3), myricetin (4), and quercetin (5). Except for rutin, the other compounds demonstrated the ability to inhibit effective xanthine oxidase compared to standard (allopurinol). Moreover, quercetin (5) inhibited NO production (IC50 21.87 µM). CONCLUSION: The results indicate that extracts from A. vulgaris effectively suppressed the activity of xanthine oxidase and exhibited antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, potentially leading to a reduction in the production of uric acid in the body and eliminating ROS. The study identified mugwort extract and bioactive compounds derived from Artemisia vulgaris, specifically luteolin, apigenin, and quercetin, as promising xanthine oxidase inhibitors. These findings suggest that further development of these compounds is warranted. At the same time, the above results also strengthen the use of mugwort to treat gout disease in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Hydrogenosomes are a specific type of mitochondria that have adapted for life under anaerobiosis. Limited availability of oxygen has resulted in the loss of the membrane-associated respiratory chain, and consequently in the generation of minimal inner membrane potential (Δψ), and inefficient ATP synthesis via substrate-level phosphorylation. The changes in energy metabolism are directly linked with the organelle biogenesis. In mitochondria, proteins are imported across the outer membrane via the Translocase of the Outer Membrane (TOM complex), while two Translocases of the Inner Membrane, TIM22, and TIM23, facilitate import to the inner membrane and matrix. TIM23-mediated steps are entirely dependent on Δψ and ATP hydrolysis, while TIM22 requires only Δψ. The character of the hydrogenosomal inner membrane translocase and the mechanism of translocation is currently unknown. RESULTS: We report unprecedented modification of TIM in hydrogenosomes of the human parasite Trichomonas vaginalis (TvTIM). We show that the import of the presequence-containing protein into the hydrogenosomal matrix is mediated by the hybrid TIM22-TIM23 complex that includes three highly divergent core components, TvTim22, TvTim23, and TvTim17-like proteins. The hybrid character of the TvTIM is underlined by the presence of both TvTim22 and TvTim17/23, association with small Tim chaperones (Tim9-10), which in mitochondria are known to facilitate the transfer of substrates to the TIM22 complex, and the coupling with TIM23-specific ATP-dependent presequence translocase-associated motor (PAM). Interactome reconstruction based on co-immunoprecipitation (coIP) and mass spectrometry revealed that hybrid TvTIM is formed with the compositional variations of paralogs. Single-particle electron microscopy for the 132-kDa purified TvTIM revealed the presence of a single ring of small Tims complex, while mitochondrial TIM22 complex bears twin small Tims hexamer. TvTIM is currently the only TIM visualized outside of Opisthokonta, which raised the question of which form is prevailing across eukaryotes. The tight association of the hybrid TvTIM with ADP/ATP carriers (AAC) suggests that AAC may directly supply ATP for the protein import since ATP synthesis is limited in hydrogenosomes. CONCLUSIONS: The hybrid TvTIM in hydrogenosomes represents an original structural solution that evolved for protein import when Δψ is negligible and remarkable example of evolutionary adaptation to an anaerobic lifestyle.

INTRODUCTION: Social prescribing is defined as "a means for trusted individuals in clinical and community settings to identify that a person has nonmedical, health-related social needs and to subsequently connect them to nonclinical supports and services within the community by co-producing a social prescription-a nonmedical prescription, to improve health and well-being and to strengthen community connections." Globally, there is growing interest in social prescribing as a holistic approach to health and well-being, with almost 30 countries involved in the social prescribing movement. In Canada, great strides are being made in social prescribing research, policy and practice, with all of this work being supported by the Canadian Institute for Social Prescribing.


A global network of student champions has emerged to build the social prescribing student movement, with student groups in seven countries, including Canada. The Canadian Social Prescribing Student Collective was established in 2022. Much progress has been made in building the social prescribing student movement in Canada, but there is a lot of work to be done, which calls for action by students, staff in health care and community organizations, and faculty and administration at postsecondary institutions. Collective efforts to build the social prescribing student movement in this country will not only shape the wider social prescribing movement, but also the future of our health system.


Un réseau mondial de champions étudiants a vu le jour dans sept pays, dont le Canada, dans le but de créer un mouvement étudiant pour la prescription sociale. Le Collectif étudiant canadien de prescription sociale a été créé en 2022. De grands progrès ont été réalisés dans la création d'un mouvement étudiant pour la prescription sociale au Canada, mais il reste encore beaucoup de travail à faire. Les étudiants, le personnel des organismes de santé et des organismes communautaires, ainsi que le corps professoral et le personnel administratif des établissements d'enseignement postsecondaire doivent agir en ce sens. Les efforts collectifs visant à créer un mouvement étudiant pour la prescription sociale au Canada façonneront non seulement le mouvement pour la prescription sociale en général, mais aussi l'avenir de notre système de santé.

OBJECTIVES: To describe patients' and surrogate information seekers' experiences talking to clinicians about online cancer information. To assess the impact of clinicians telling patients or surrogate seekers not to search for information online. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. SAMPLE: A total of 282 participants, including 185 individuals with cancer and 97 surrogate seekers. METHODS: Individuals were recruited through a broad consent registry and completed a 20-min survey. FINDINGS: Cancer patients and surrogate seekers did not differ significantly in their experiences talking with clinicians about online cancer information. Nearly all patients and surrogate seekers who were told by a clinician not to go online for cancer information did so anyway. IMPLICATIONS: Interventions for improving cancer information seeking and communication with clinicians should target both patients and surrogate seekers. Clinicians should be educated about effective ways to communicate with patients and surrogate seekers about online cancer information.

Background: Tele-oncology became a widely used tool during the COVID-19 pandemic, but there was limited understanding of how patient-clinician communication occurred using the technology. Our goal was to identify how communication transpired during tele-oncology consultations compared with in-person appointments. Methods: A convergent parallel mixed-method design was utilized for the web-based survey, and follow-up interviews were conducted with cancer patients from March to December 2020. Participants were recruited from the University of Florida Health Cancer Center and two national cancer organizations. During the survey, participants rated their clinician's patient-centered communication behaviors. Open-ended survey responses and interview data were combined and analyzed thematically using the constant comparative method. Results: A total of 158 participants completed the survey, and 33 completed an interview. Ages ranged from 19 to 88 years (mean = 64.2; standard deviation = 13.0); 53.2% identified as female and 44.9% as male. The majority of respondents (76%) considered communication in tele-oncology equal to in-person visits. Preferences for tele-oncology included the ability to get information from the clinician, with 13.5% rating tele-oncology as better than in-person appointments. Tele-oncology was considered worse than in-person appointments for eye contact (n = 21, 12.4%) and virtual waiting room times (n = 50, 29.4%). The following qualitative themes corresponded with several quantitative variables: (1) commensurate to in-person appointments, (2) uncertainty with the digital platform, (3) lack of a personal connection, and (4) enhanced patient experience. Conclusion: Patient-centered communication behaviors were mostly viewed as equally prevalent during tele-oncology and in-person appointments. Addressing the challenges of tele-oncology is necessary to improve the patient experience.

The use of visible photon fluxes to influence catalytic reactions on metal nanoparticle surfaces has attracted attention based on observations of reaction mechanisms and selectivity not observed under equilibrium heating. These observations suggest that photon fluxes can selectively impact the rates of certain elementary steps, creating nonequilibrium energy distributions among various reaction pathways. However, quantitative studies validating these hypotheses on metal nanoparticle surfaces are lacking. We examine the influence of continuous wave visible photon fluxes on the CO desorption rates from 1 to 2 nm diameter Pt and Pd nanoparticle surfaces supported on γ-Al2O3. Temperature-programmed desorption measurements quantified via diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy demonstrate that visible photon fluxes significantly enhanced the rate of CO desorption from Pt nanoparticles in a wavelength-dependent manner. 440 nm photons most efficiently promoted CO desorption from Pt nanoparticle surfaces, aligning with the excitation energy for the interfacial electronic transition within the Pt-CO bond. Conversely, visible photon fluxes had no measurable influence on CO desorption rates from Pd nanoparticle surfaces after accounting for photon-induced heating. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the Pt-CO bond exhibits a narrower LUMO resonance, stronger coupling between the photoexcitation and forces induced on the metal-C bond, and vibrational energy dissipation that more effectively couples to desorption as compared to Pd-CO. These results demonstrate the specificity photons provide in facilitating chemical reactions on metal nanoparticle surfaces and substantiate the idea that photon fluxes can steer processes and outcomes of catalytic reactions in ways not achievable by equilibrium heating.

BACKGROUND: Cocreation has the potential to engage people with lived and living experiences in the design and evaluation of health and social services. However, guidance is needed to better include people from equity-deserving groups (EDGs), who are more likely to face barriers to participation, experience ongoing or historical harm, and benefit from accessible methods of engagement. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this international forum (CoPro2022) was to advance a collective vision for equity-based cocreation. DESIGN: A participatory process of engagement in experiential colearning and arts-based creative and reflective dialogue. Visual prototypes were created and synthesised to generate a collective vision for inclusive equity-based cocreation. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: The Forum was held at the Gathering Place by the Grand River in Ohsweken, Ontario, Canada. A total of 48 participants attended the forum. They were purposely invited and have intersecting positionalities (21 academic experts, six experience experts, 10 trainees, and 11 members of EDGs) from nine countries (Bangladesh, Botswana, Canada, England, Italy, Norway, Scotland, Singapore, Sweden). COPRO2022 ACTIVITIES: CoPro2022 was an immersive experience hosted on Indigenous land that encouraged continuous participant reflection on their own worldviews and those of others as participants openly discussed the challenges and opportunities with engaging EDGs in cocreation activities. Visual prototypes and descriptions created in small groups were informed by participants' reflections on the panel presentations at the Forum and their own experiences with equity-based cocreation. Following the event, the authorship team inductively coded themes from the prototype descriptions and met to discuss the cross-cutting themes. These informed the design of an illustrated collective vision for Equity Based Co-Creation (EqCC). RESULTS: Six prototypes were cocreated by each small group to illustrate their vision for EqCC. Within these, four cross-cutting themes were identified: (i) go to where people are, (ii) nurture relationships and creativity, (iii) reflect, replenish and grow, (iv) and promote thriving and transformation. These four themes are captured in the Collective EqCC Vision to guide a new era of inclusive excellence in cocreation activities. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Service users, caregivers, and people with lived experience were involved in leading the design of the CoPro2022 and co-led the event. This included activities at the event such as presenting, facilitating small and large group discussion, leading art-based activities, and reflecting with the team on the lessons learned. People with lived experience were involved in the analysis and knowledge sharing from this event. Several members of the research team (students and researchers) also identified as members of EDGs and were invited to draw from their personal and academic knowledge.

The early detection of glaucoma is essential in preventing visual impairment. Artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to analyze color fundus photographs (CFPs) in a cost-effective manner, making glaucoma screening more accessible. While AI models for glaucoma screening from CFPs have shown promising results in laboratory settings, their performance decreases significantly in real-world scenarios due to the presence of out-of-distribution and low-quality images. To address this issue, we propose the Artificial Intelligence for Robust Glaucoma Screening (AIROGS) challenge. This challenge includes a large dataset of around 113,000 images from about 60,000 patients and 500 different screening centers, and encourages the development of algorithms that are robust to ungradable and unexpected input data. We evaluated solutions from 14 teams in this paper and found that the best teams performed similarly to a set of 20 expert ophthalmologists and optometrists. The highest-scoring team achieved an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.99 (95% CI: 0.98-0.99) for detecting ungradable images on-the-fly. Additionally, many of the algorithms showed robust performance when tested on three other publicly available datasets. These results demonstrate the feasibility of robust AI-enabled glaucoma screening.

In pre-eclampsia models, nicotinamide (NAM) has protective effects in pre-eclampsia and is being evaluated as a therapeutic nutraceutical in clinical studies. NAM undergoes extensive hepatic metabolism by NAM N-methyltransferase to methylnicotinamide (MNA), which is subsequently metabolized to methyl-2-pyridone-5-carboxamide (M2PY) by aldehyde oxidase. However, the pharmacokinetics of NAM and its major metabolites has never been studied in pregnant individuals. Blood samples were collected before and 1, 2, 4, 8, and 24 hours after single 1 g oral NAM dose in healthy pregnant (gestational age 24-33 weeks) and nonpregnant female volunteers (n = 6/group). Pooled urine was collected from 0 to 8 hours. NAM, MNA, and M2PY area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) data were analyzed by noncompartmental analysis. No difference in the plasma AUC0→24 of NAM (median (25%-75%): 463 (436-576) vs. 510 (423, 725) µM*hour, P = 0.430) and its intermediate metabolite MNA (89.1 (60.4, 124.4) vs. 83.8 (62.7, 93.7) µM*hour, P = 0.515) was observed in pregnant and nonpregnant volunteers, respectively; however, the terminal metabolite M2PY AUC0 → 24 was significantly lower in pregnant individuals (218 (188, 254) vs. 597 (460, 653) µM*hour, P < 0.001). NAM renal clearance (CLR ; P = 0.184), MNA CLR (P = 0.180), and total metabolite formation clearance (P = 0.405) did not differ across groups; however, M2PY CLR was significantly higher in pregnant individuals (10.5 (9.3-11.3) vs. 7.5 (6.4-8.5) L/h, P = 0.002). These findings demonstrate that the PK of NAM and systemic exposure to its intermediate metabolite MNA are not significantly altered during pregnancy, and systemic exposure to NAM's major metabolite M2PY was reduced during pregnancy due to increased renal elimination.

Balancing kinetics, a crucial priority in catalysis, is frequently achieved by sacrificing activity of elementary steps to suppress side reactions and enhance catalyst stability. Dry reforming of methane (DRM), a process operated at high temperature, usually involves fast C-H activation but sluggish carbon removal, resulting in coke deposition and catalyst deactivation. Studies focused solely on catalyst innovation are insufficient in addressing coke formation efficiently. Herein, we develop coke-free catalysts that balance kinetics of elementary steps for overall thermodynamics optimization. Beginning from a highly active cobalt aluminum oxide (CoAl2O4) catalyst that is susceptible to severe coke formation, we substitute aluminum (Al) with gallium (Ga), reporting a CoAl0.5Ga1.5O4-R catalyst that performs DRM stably over 1000 hours without observable coke deposition. We find that Ga enhances DRM stability by suppressing C-H activation to balance carbon removal. A series of coke-free DRM catalysts are developed herein by partially substituting Al from CoAl2O4 with other metals.

Solvents are known to affect the local surface plasmon resonance of metal nanoparticles; however, how solvents can be used to manipulate the interfacial charge and energy transfer in plasmonic catalysis remains to be explored. Here, using NH3 decomposition on a Ru-doped Cu surface as an example, we report density functional theory (DFT) and delta self-consistent field (SCF) calculations, through which we investigate the effect of different protic solvent molecules on interfacial charge transfer by calculating excitation energy of an electronic transition between the metal and the molecular reactant. We find that the H-bonds between water and NH3 can alter the direct interfacial charge transfer due to the shift of the molecular frontier orbitals with respect to the metal Fermi level. These effects are also observed when the H-bonds are formed between methanol (or phenol) and ammonia. We show that the solvent possessing stronger basicity induces a more pronounced effect on the excitation energy. This work thus provides valuable insights for tuning the excitation energy and controlling different routes to channel the photon energy into plasmonic catalysis.

Recent studies have developed varied delivery systems incorporating natural compounds to improve the limitations of plant extracts for clinical use while enabling their controlled release at treatment sites. For the first time, ethanolic limeberry extract (Triphasia trifolia) has been successfully encapsulated in thermo-sensitive chitosan hydrogels by a facile in situ loading. The extract-incorporated chitosan hydrogels have a pH value of nearly 7.00, gelation temperatures in the range of 37-38 °C, and exhibit an open-cell porous structure, thus allowing them to absorb and retain 756 % of their mass in water. The in vitro extract release from the hydrogels is driven by both temperature and pH, resulting in more than 70 % of the initial extract being released within the first 24 h. Although the release half-life of hydrogels at pH 7.4 is longer, their release capacity is higher than that at pH 6.5. Upon a 2 °C increase in temperature, the time to release 50 % initial extract is sharply reduced by 20-40 %. The release kinetics from the hydrogels mathematically demonstrated that diffusion is a prominent driving force over chitosan relaxation. Consequently, the developed hydrogels encapsulating the limeberry extract show their heat and pH sensitivity in controlled release for treating chronic wounds.

A new spiroterpenoid, namely tinctorin (1), along with one known compound, norreticulatin (2), were isolated from the lichen Parmotrema tinctorum (Despr. ex Nyl.) Hale. Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculations. The absolute configuration of 2 was established for the first time. Compound 1 was evaluated for its inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase and found to be inactive.

Helicobacter pylori is the primary pathogen responsible for causing gastroduodenal ulcers and stomach cancer. The standard treatment for H. pylori typically involves a combination of antibiotics and acid-reducing medications. However, the recurrence of ulcers is closely linked to the emergence of antibiotic resistance in H. pylori, necessitating the development of alternative drugs. This report focuses on the investigation of artesunate as a potential alternative to reduce antibiotic use and enhance effectiveness against H. pylori. Unfortunately, commercial artesunate is available in an acid form, which has poor solubility, especially in gastric acid fluid. The aim of this study is to utilize a water-soluble formulation of artesunate called dry emulsion formulation (ADEF) and combine it with amoxicillin to eradicate H. pylori. In vitro studies were conducted to evaluate the activity of ADEF against H. pylori and determine its inhibitory concentrations. In addition, pharmacokinetic parameters of orally administered ADEF and native artesunate were investigated in rats for in vivo studies. The results showed that when combined with amoxicillin and pantoprazole, ADEF exhibited effectiveness against H. pylori. It is worth noting that the solubility of ADEF in gastric acid appears to be a critical factor for achieving successful treatment. Consequently, ADEF could be considered a promising candidate for H. pylori therapy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Proton radiotherapy (PRT) offers potential benefits over other radiation modalities, including photon and electron radiotherapy. Increasing the rate at which proton radiation is delivered may provide a therapeutic advantage. Here, we compared the efficacy of conventional proton therapy (CONVpr) to ultrahigh dose-rate proton therapy, FLASHpr, in a mouse model of non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Mice bearing orthotopic lung tumors received thoracic radiation therapy using CONVpr (<0.05 Gy/s) and FLASHpr (>60 Gy/s) dose rates. RESULTS: Compared to CONVpr, FLASHpr was more effective in reducing tumor burden and decreasing tumor cell proliferation. Furthermore, FLASHpr was more efficient in increasing the infiltration of cytotoxic CD8+ T-lymphocytes inside the tumor while simultaneously reducing the percentage of immunosuppressive regulatory T-cells (Tregs) among T-lymphocytes. Also, compared to CONVpr, FLASHpr was more effective in decreasing pro-tumorigenic M2-like macrophages in lung tumors, while increasing infiltration of anti-tumor M1-like macrophages. Finally, FLASHpr treatment reduced expression of checkpoint inhibitors in lung tumors, indicating reduced immune tolerance. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that FLASH dose-rate proton delivery modulates the immune system to improve tumor control and might thus be a promising new alternative to conventional dose rates for NSCLC treatment.

Although there are new approaches in both cancer treatment and diagnosis, overall mortality is a major concern. New technologies have attempted to look at breath volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detection to diagnose cancer. Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry (GC - MS) have remained the gold standard of VOC analysis for decades, but it has limitations in differentiating VOCs between cancer subtypes. To increase efficacy and accuracy, new methods to analyze these breath VOCs have been introduced, such as Solid Phase Microextraction/Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (SPME/GC-MS), Selected Ion Flow Tube - Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS), Proton Transfer Reaction - Mass Spectrometry (PRT-MS), Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS), and Colorimetric Sensors. This article highlights new technologies that have been studied and applied in the detection and quantification of breath VOCs for possible cancer diagnoses.

Pulmonary fibrosis results from dysregulated lung repair and involves multiple cell types. The role of endothelial cells (EC) in lung fibrosis is poorly understood. Using single cell RNA-sequencing we identified endothelial transcription factors involved in lung fibrogenesis, including FOXF1, SMAD6, ETV6 and LEF1. Focusing on FOXF1, we found that FOXF1 is decreased in EC within human idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and mouse bleomycin-injured lungs. Endothelial-specific Foxf1 inhibition in mice increased collagen depositions, promoted lung inflammation, and impaired R-Ras signaling. In vitro, FOXF1-deficient EC increased proliferation, invasion and activation of human lung fibroblasts, and stimulated macrophage migration by secreting IL-6, TNFα, CCL2 and CXCL1. FOXF1 inhibited TNFα and CCL2 through direct transcriptional activation of Rras gene promoter. Transgenic overexpression or endothelial-specific nanoparticle delivery of Foxf1 cDNA decreased pulmonary fibrosis in bleomycin-injured mice. Nanoparticle delivery of FOXF1 cDNA can be considered for future therapies in IPF.

Rivets are used to assemble layers in the air intakes, fuselages, and wings of an aircraft. After a long time of working under extreme conditions, pitting corrosion could appear in the rivets of the aircraft. The rivets could be broken down and thread the safety of the aircraft. In this paper, we proposed an ultrasonic testing method integrated with convolutional neural network (CNN) for the detection of corrosion in the rivets. The CNN model was designed to be lightweight enough to be able to run on edge devices. The CNN model was trained with a very limited sample of rivets, from 3 to 9 artificial pitting corrosive rivets. The results show that the proposed approach could detect up to 95.2% of pitting corrosion using experimental data with three training rivets. The detection accuracy could be improved to 99% by nine training rivets. The CNN model was implemented and ran on an edge device (Jetson Nano) in real-time with a small latency of 1.65 ms.
