RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Many people who menstruate in low- and middle-income countries struggle to manage their menstruation safely, hygienically, and with dignity. This is exacerbated in humanitarian settings with limited access to menstrual products and safe, private spaces for changing, washing, and disposing of menstrual products. To address these challenges, Youth Development Labs (YLabs) used a human-centered design approach to co-design the Cocoon Mini, a safe, physical structure for managing menstruation in the Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement in Uganda. METHODS: The study comprised five phases, including background research, design research, rough prototyping, live prototyping, and a pilot study. A total of 340 people, including people who menstruate, male community members, and community stakeholders, participated in interviews, focus groups, and co-design sessions. Solution prototypes were created, evaluated, and iterated upon in each successive project phase. The final intervention design, the Cocoon Mini, was evaluated qualitatively for feasibility and acceptability during a three-month pilot using structured interviews with 109 people who menstruate utilizing Cocoon Mini structures, 64 other community members, and 20 Cocoon Mini supervisors. RESULTS: Results showed widespread desirability and acceptability of the Cocoon Mini among people who menstruate and other community members. Overall, 95% (104/109) of people who menstruate stated the space had made menstrual health management easier, primarily by providing designated waste bins, solar lights, and additional water sources. The Cocoon Mini provided an increased sense of physical and psychological safety in knowing where to privately manage menstruation. Furthermore, the Cocoon Mini demonstrated that an intervention could be run and maintained sustainably at the household level in humanitarian contexts, without continued external stakeholder intervention. Each Cocoon Mini structure costs approximately $360 USD to build and maintain and serves 15-20 people who menstruate, leading to a cost per person of $18-$24. Furthermore, attaching an incinerator to the structure for easier and quicker disposal of waste bin contents (compared to transporting full waste bins elsewhere) costs $2110 USD. CONCLUSIONS: People who menstruate lack access to safe, private spaces for menstrual health and product disposal in humanitarian settings. The Cocoon Mini provides a solution for the safe and effective management of menstruation. Customizing and scaling up dedicated menstrual health spaces should be considered a high-priority intervention in humanitarian settings.

Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC), which has tunable properties, is a precursor of nanostructured energy storage materials; however, the cost of BNC production is challenging. This study uses crude glycerol from the biodiesel industry as a carbon nutrient and first-time carbonised BNC from K. sucrofermentans that is applied in energy storage. From crude glycerol in static cultivation, 6.4 g L-1 BNC was produced with a high crystallinity index (85%) and tensile properties in comparison to conventionally used pure carbon substrates. Carbon materials were derived from the BNC retained fibrous and crystalline features with disordered porous structures. The electrochemical properties of the carbon materials have a specific capacitance of 140 F g-1. This study highlights the valorisation of waste glycerol from the biodiesel industry as a substrate for efficient BNC production and the energy storage potential of carbon derived from BNC as renewable energy materials.

BACKGROUND: Early life anesthesia exposure results in long-term cognitive deficits in rats. Environmental enrichment consisting of social housing, a stimulating environment, and voluntary exercise can rescue this deficit. We hypothesized that exercise alone is sufficient to rescue the cognitive deficit associated with perinatal anesthesia. METHODS: Postnatal day 7 male rats (P7) underwent isoflurane (Iso) or sham exposure and were subsequently weaned at P21. They were then singly housed in a cage with a running wheel or a fixed wheel. After 3 weeks of exercise, animals underwent behavioral testing for spatial and recognition memory assessments. Animals were killed at various time points to accomplish either bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) labeling or quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) to quantify brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) levels. RESULTS: Postweaning voluntary exercise rescued the long-term spatial memory deficit associated with perinatal Iso exposure. Iso-sedentary animals did not discriminate the goal quadrant, spending no more time than chance during the Barnes maze probe trial (1-sample t test, P = .524) while all other groups did (1-sample t test, PIso-exercise = .033; Pcontrol [Con]-sedentary = .004). We did not find a deficit in recognition memory tasks after Iso exposure as we observed previously. BrdU incorporation in the adult hippocampus of Iso-sedentary animals was decreased compared to sedentary controls (Tukey P = .005). Exercise prevented this decrease, with Iso-exercise animals having more proliferation than Iso-sedentary (Tukey P < .001). There was no effect of exercise or Iso on BDNF mRNA in either the cortex or hippocampus (cortex: FExercise[1,32] = 0.236, P = .631; FIso [1,32] = 0.038, P = .847; FInteraction [1,32] = 1.543, P = .223; and hippocampus: FExercise[1,33] = 1.186, P = .284; FIso [1,33] = 1.46, P = .236; FInteraction[1,33] = 1.78, P = .191). CONCLUSIONS: Exercise restores BrdU incorporation and rescues a spatial memory deficit after early life anesthesia exposure. This demonstrates sufficiency of exercise alone in the context of environmental enrichment to recover a behavioral phenotype after a perinatal insult.
