BACKGROUND: In diabetic retinopathy (DR), hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF-1α) induces oxidative stress by upregulating glycolysis. This process leads to neurodegeneration, particularly photoreceptor cell damage, which further contributes to retinal microvascular deterioration. Further, the regulation of Wnt-inhibitory factor 1 (WIF1), a secreted Wnt signaling antagonist, has not been fully characterized in neurodegenerative eye diseases. We aimed to explore the impact of WIF1 on photoreceptor function within the context of DR. METHOD: Twelve-week-old C57BL/KsJ-db/db mice were intravitreally injected with WIF1 overexpression lentivirus. After 4 weeks, optical coherence tomography (OCT), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), H&E staining, and electroretinography (ERG) were used to assess the retinal tissue and function. The potential mechanism of action of WIF1 in photoreceptor cells was explored using single-cell RNA sequencing. Under high-glucose conditions, 661 W cells were used as an in vitro DR model. WIF1-mediated signaling pathway components were assessed using quantitative real-time PCR, immunostaining, and western blotting. RESULT: Typical diabetic manifestations were observed in db/db mice. Notably, the expression of WIF1 was decreased at the mRNA and protein levels. These pathological manifestations and visual function improved after WIF1 overexpression in db/db mice. TEM demonstrated that WIF1 restored damaged mitochondria, the Golgi apparatus, and photoreceptor outer segments. Moreover, ERG indicated the recovery of a-wave potential amplitude. Single-cell RNA sequencing and in vitro experiments suggested that WIF1 overexpression prevented the expression of glycolytic enzymes and lactate production by inhibiting the canonical Wnt signaling pathway, HIF-1α, and Glut1, thereby reducing retinal and cellular reactive oxygen species levels and maintaining 661 W cell viability. CONCLUSIONS: WIF1 exerts an inhibitory effect on the Wnt/ß-catenin-HIF-1α-Glut1 glycolytic pathway, thereby alleviating oxidative stress levels and mitigating pathological structural characteristics in retinal photoreceptor cells. This mechanism helps preserve the function of photoreceptor cells in DR and indicates that WIF1 holds promise as a potential therapeutic candidate for DR and other neurodegenerative ocular disorders.

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) can cause a variety of malignancies. Ganciclovir (GCV) is one of the most efficient drugs against KSHV, but its non-specificity can cause other side effects in patients. Nucleic acid miR-34a-5p can inhibit the transcription of KSHV RNA and has great potential in anti-KSHV therapy, but there are still problems such as easy degradation and low delivery efficiency. Here, we constructed a co-loaded dual-drug nanocomplex (GCV@ZIF-8/PEI-FA+miR-34a-5p) that contains GCV internally and adsorbs miR-34a-5p externally. The folic acid (FA)-coupled polyethyleneimine (PEI) coating layer (PEI-FA) was shown to increase the cellular uptake of the nanocomplex, which is conducive to the enrichment of drugs at the KSHV infection site. GCV and miR-34a-5p are released at the site of the KSHV infection through the acid hydrolysis characteristics of ZIF-8 and the "proton sponge effect" of PEI. The co-loaded dual-drug nanocomplex not only inhibits the proliferation and migration of KSHV-positive cells but also decreases the mRNA expression level of KSHV lytic and latent genes. In conclusion, this co-loaded dual-drug nanocomplex may provide an attractive strategy for antiviral drug delivery and anti-KSHV therapy.

BACKGROUND: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) or OCT angiography (OCTA) has been investigated in few research studies of psychiatric disorders. No research has been done using OCT or OCTA in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). METHODS: OCTA measured foveal avascular zone (FAZ), macular vessel density (MVD), and peripapillary vessel density (PVD). OCT measured the peripapillary retinal fiber layer (RNFL) and central retinal thickness (CRT). The study utilized the Ottawa Self-Injury Inventory, Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA), and Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) to assess the symptom characteristics of individuals with BPD. RESULTS: Fifty-nine eyes of BPD patients and 58 eyes of normal subjects were analyzed, MVD of the superficial retinal capillary plexus declined noticeably in most subfields (p < 0.05). Significant differences were observed in the whole inner ring and outer ring index between BPD and HC groups (p < 0.05). The patients with BPD exhibited lower RNFL and CRT, the difference was significant (p < 0.05). CRT indicated a significant negative correlation with the Ottawa Self-Injury Inventory (p < 0.05). In addition, we observed that there was a negative correlation identified between the MVD of the inner ring and HAMA (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the MVD of the outer ring was positively correlated with GAF (p < 0.05). The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (AUROCs) for distinguishing BPD and HC eyes in OCTA were the highest for fovea MVD (0.679), followed by outer ring MVD (0.669), inner ring MVD (0.641), FAZ (0.579). In OCT, CRT was highest for BPD (0.711), followed by RNFL (0.625). CONCLUSION: The OCT and OCTA can non-invasively detect microvascular and morphology changes of the retina in BPD patients compared to healthy control subjects.

BACKGROUND: Research has shown the diagnostic potential of optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT angiography (OCTA) in various psychiatric disorders. However, there is few research focusing on changes specific to Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), and the diagnostic value of OCT combined with OCTA parameters for MDD remains unclear. METHODS: In this study, we investigated microvascular and morphology changes in the retina of MDD patients using a combination of OCTA and OCT parameters, and to examine their correlation with MDD mood and cognitive function in order to assess their diagnostic capability. RESULTS: Our findings revealed a significant decline in macular vessel density (MVD) in the superficial retinal capillary plexus (SRCP) across all subfields, except the NO area. We also observed a significant positive correlation between fovea and Stroop-1, as well as between temporal inner (TI) and Stroop-3 in MDD patients. Furthermore, we identified a negative correlation between fovea and Self-Rating Depression Scale, as well as between Superior outer (SO) and Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale-C in MDD patients. LIMITATIONS: The sample size was small. Anatomical variables in blood flow may contribute to variability between subjects and outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: The diagnostic value of OCTA suggests their potential as valuable tools for monitoring and diagnosing MDD.

Flexible photonic textiles constructed by sustainable cholesteric organization are very promising to achieve a combination of chiroptical structural colors, mechanical robustness, sustainability, and environment stability. However, the efficient assembly of well-ordered cholesteric nanoarchitectures on flexible textiles in a scalable and patternable manner remains a grand challenge. In this study, we develop an efficient and scalable approach to construct large area chiroptical biotextiles using renewable and bioenabled cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as building blocks. This hierarchical assembly enables cholesteric photonic CNCs "cast" in situ, in a seamlessly tessellated design, onto topography-tailored textiles to form a strong interlocked multilayered structure. The resulting hierarchical architecture not only comprises strong photonic-photonic coupling to synergistically enhance the chiroptical properties with tunable wavelengths but also leads to impressive mechanical and optical stability against external mechanical forces and extreme environments. More importantly, through regulating the localized photonic band of the preformed chiroptical textiles by small molecules (e.g., water and glucose), customized colored patterns can be easily generated in large scale that are highly responsive to multistimuli, including chiral polarized light, view angle, and solvent. This chiroptical biotextile is a promising next-generation biomimetic photonic material for defense, aviation, and marine and aerospace special applications.

The purpose of this study is to observe the changes of cortical morphological characteristics and their potential contribution to cognitive function in ALL survivors by using surface-based morphometry (SBM). Using SBM analysis, we calculated and compared group differences in cortical thickness, sulcal depth, gyrification, and fractal dimension of the cerebral cortex between 18 pediatric ALL survivors treated on chemotherapy-only protocols and off treatment within 2 years, and 18 healthy controls (HCs) with two-sample t-tests [P < 0.05, family-wise error (FWE) corrected]. Relationships between abnormal cortical characteristic values and cognitive function parameters were investigated with partial correlation analysis, taking age as a covariate. We found decreased cortical thickness mainly located in the prefrontal and temporal region, and increased sulcal depth in left rostral middle frontal cortex and left pars orbitalis in the ALL survivors compared to HCs. There were no statistically significant differences in the gyrification and fractal dimension between the two groups. In ALL survivors, cortical thickness and sulcal depth of above areas values revealed no significant correlation with the cognitive function parameters. In conclusion, pediatric ALL survivors show decreased cortical thickness in prefrontal and temporal regions, and increased sulcal depth in prefrontal region. These results suggest that SBM-based approach can be used to assess changes of cortical morphological characteristics in pediatric ALL survivors.

BACKGROUND: A cyst with mural nodule(s) (CMN) is a rare imaging finding of cerebellar metastasis (CMET). It is a great challenge to differentiate it from cerebellar hemangioblastoma (CHB). In the present study, we explore the differences in the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of the 2 tumors. METHODS: Patients with pathologically confirmed CMET or CHB at our hospital from July 2009 to September 2021 were enrolled in the present study. All the patients underwent conventional head MRI (before and after contrast administration) before surgery and had ≥1 lesion in the cerebellum that presented as CMN on MRI. The clinical and MRI features were compared between the 2 groups. RESULTS: A total of 33 patients (10 with CMET and 23 with CHB) met the study criteria. The CMET patients were significantly older than were the CHB patients (median age, 59.5 years vs. 37 years; P = 0.002). Compared with the CHB group, the CMET group showed significantly higher occurrence rates of multiple mural nodules (72.7% vs. 8.7%), lack of vascular flow voids (100% vs. 65.2%), isointense or hypointense mural nodules on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery imaging (100.0% vs. 22.7%), restricted diffusion of mural nodules (22.2% vs. 0.0%), mildly enhanced mural nodules (90.9% vs. 4.3%), and a ring-enhanced pattern of the cyst wall (100% vs. 8.7%; P < 0.05 for all). CONCLUSIONS: When CMN is detected in the cerebellum on MRI, older age, multiple mural nodules, absence of vascular flow voids, isointense or hypointense mural nodule on fluid-attenuated inversion recovery sequence, restricted diffusion of the mural nodule, mildly enhanced mural nodules, and a ring-enhanced pattern of the cyst wall are the clinical and imaging features that strongly indicate the likelihood of metastasis, rather than CHB.

We aim to explore if there is a relationship between acute mountain sickness (AMS) and the risk of psychiatric disorders in Taiwan by using the National Health Insurance Research Database for to the rare studies on this topic. We enrolled 127 patients with AMS, and 1270 controls matched for sex, age, monthly insured premiums, comorbidities, seasons for medical help, residences, urbanization level, levels of care, and index dates were chosen from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2015. There were 49 patients with AMS and 140 controls developed psychiatric disorders within the 16-year follow-up. The Fine-Gray model analyzed that the patients with AMS were prone to have a greater risk for the development of psychiatric disorders with an adjusted sub-distribution hazard ratio (sHRs) of 10.384 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 7.267-14.838, p < 0.001) for psychiatric disorders. The AMS group was associated with anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, bipolar disorder, sleep disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder/acute stress disorder, psychotic disorder, and substance-related disorder (SRD). The relationship between anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, SRD, and AMS still persisted even after we excluded the psychiatric disorders within the first five years after AMS. There was an association between AMS and the rising risk of psychiatric disorders in the 16 years of long-term follow-up research.

AIMS: Alterations in neuronal activity and cerebral hemodynamics have been reported in idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE) patients, possibly resulting in neurovascular decoupling; however, no neuroimaging evidence confirmed this disruption. This study aimed to investigate the possible presence of neurovascular decoupling and its clinical implications in childhood IGE using resting-state fMRI and arterial spin labeling imaging. METHODS: IGE patients and healthy participants underwent resting-state fMRI and arterial spin labeling imaging to calculate degree centrality (DC) and cerebral blood flow (CBF), respectively. Across-voxel CBF-DC correlations were analyzed to evaluate the neurovascular coupling within the whole gray matter, and the regional coupling of brain region was assessed with the CBF/DC ratio. RESULTS: The study included 26 children with IGE and 35 sex- and age-matched healthy controls (HCs). Compared with the HCs, the IGE group presented lower across-voxel CBF-DC correlations, higher CBF/DC ratio in the right posterior cingulate cortex/precuneus, middle frontal gyrus, and medial frontal gyrus (MFG), and lower ratio in the left inferior frontal gyrus. The increased CBF/DC ratio in the right MFG was correlated with lower performance intelligence quotient scores in the IGE group. CONCLUSION: Children with IGE present altered neurovascular coupling, associated with lower performance intelligence quotient scores. The study shed a new insight into the pathophysiology of epilepsy and provided potential imaging biomarkers of cognitive performances in children with IGE.

Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) can infect a variety of cells and cause malignant tumors. At present, the use of microRNA (miRNA) for anti-KSHV is a promising treatment strategy, but the instability and non-specific uptake of miRNA still limit its use in the treatment of KSHV. In the present study, we constructed a nano-drug delivery system employing chemical grafting and electrostatic adsorption to solve the problems of easy degradation and low cell uptake of miRNA during direct administration. This nano-drug delivery system is to graft 4-carboxyphenylboric acid (PBA) and lauric acid (LA) onto polyethylenimine (PEI) through amidation reaction, and then prepare cationic copolymer nanocarriers (LA-PEI-PBA). The drug-carrying nanocomplex LA-PEI-PBA/miR-34a-5p was formed after further electrostatic adsorption of miR-34a-5p on the carrier and could protect miR-34a-5p from nuclease and serum degradation. Modification of the drug-carrying nanocomplex LA-PEI-PBA/miR-34a-5p by targeted molecule PBA showed effective uptake, increase in the level of miR-34a-5p, and inhibition of cell proliferation and migration in KSHV-infected cells. In addition, the drug-carrying nanocomplex could also significantly reduce the expression of KSHV lytic and latent genes, achieving the purpose of anti-KSHV treatment. In conclusion, these cationic copolymer nanocarriers with PBA targeting possess potential applications in nucleic acid delivery and anti-KSHV therapy.

This study aimed to investigate the association between the heat-related illness (HRI) and the risk of developing psychiatric disorders. From 2000 to 2015, there were 3126 patients with newly diagnosed HRI selected from the National Health Insurance Research Database, along with 31,260 controls matched for gender and age. Fine and Gray's analysis was used to compare the risk of psychiatric disorders during the 16 years of follow-up. Among the subjects, 523 of the HRI patients and 3619 of the control group (1774.18 vs. 1193.78 per 100,000 person-years) developed psychiatric disorders. Compared with non-HRI patients, the HRI ones had a 3.849-fold risk of being attacked by psychiatric disorders (95% CI: 3.632−4.369, p < 0.001) after adjusting for potential confounders. The sensitivity analysis revealed that the relationship between the HRI and the listed psychiatric disorders was determined by the exclusion of the first-year psychiatric events after the HRI. In spite of deleting the psychiatric diagnoses of the first five years, the HRI was still correlated with the development of psychiatric disorders with the exception of schizophreniform disorders, posttraumatic stress disorders, and acute stress disorder. Therefore, our findings concluded that the HRI could be a potential influence on the increased hazard of psychiatric disorders.

Strain G5-11T, a Gram-negative, moderately halotolerant, facultatively aerobic, motile bacterium was isolated from saline soil collected from Yingkou, Liaoning, China. The cells of strain G5-11T grew in the presence of 3-15% (w/v) NaCl (optimum 5%), at between 4 and 35 °C (optimum 30 °C), and at a pH of 6.0-9.0 (optimum 8.0). The major respiratory quinone was Q-9 and the dominant cellular fatty acids were summed feature 8 (C18:1ω7c/C18:1ω6c), C16:0, and summed feature 3 (C16:1ω7c/C16:1ω6c). The major components of the polar lipid profile were phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol and unidentified aminolipid. The G + C content of the strain G5-11T genome was 61.0 mol%. The isolated strain G5-11T showed the highest 16S rRNA gene similarity to Halomonas niordiana LMG 31227T and Halomonas taeanensis DSM 16463T, both reaching 98.3%, followed by Halomonas pacifica NBRC 102220T. The results from phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, and phylogenetic analyses showed that strain G5-11T represented a novel species of the genus Halomonas, for which the name Halomonas salinarum sp. nov. was proposed. The type strain of Halomonas salinarum is G5-11T (= CGMCC 1.12051T = LMG 31677T).

Cardiac myxoma is a common benign primary intracardiac tumor in the general population, and it is generally characterized as a benign tumor, and the morbidity of biatrial myxoma is low. Cases of biatrial myxoma in young patients are extremely rare. Furthermore, severe complications of cardiac myxoma, such as cerebral embolism, can have fatal consequences. Imaging can effectively assist in making a correct diagnosis and a safe and efficient surgical treatment plan. In this case report, we describe a unique case of a young woman who presented with biatrial myxoma accompanied by pulmonary embolism and cerebral embolism. Computed tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA) detected multiple filling defects in the bilateral cardiac and bilateral inferior pulmonary artery basal branches. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) revealed irregular isoechoic masses in the bilateral atrium. Postoperative histopathology confirmed a biatrial myxoma. The patient was discharged on the ninth day after surgery.

(S)-4-Chlorophenylpyridylmethanol and (R)-4-chlorobenzhydrol are key pharmaceutical intermediates for the synthesis of bepotastine and cloperastine, respectively. However, the biocatalytic approach to prepare these bulky diaryl ketones remains challenging because of the low activity of naturally occurring alcohol dehydrogenases (ADH). In the present study, ADH seq5, which has an adequate binding pocket volume and accepts bulky diaryl ketones, was further engineered with a binding pocket of increased hydrophobicity. Based on molecular simulation and binding free energy analyses, a small mutation library was constructed, and mutant seq5-D150I with a threefold increase in kcat and a low Km was obtained successfully. The comparison of kinetic parameters, binding free energy, docking conformation, and critical catalytic distances calculated by molecular dynamic simulations revealed the source of increased activity. To develop a practical approach with seq5-D150I, reaction conditions including pH, temperature, buffer, and metal ions were optimised and applied to synthesise (S)-4-chlorophenylpyridylmethanol and (R)-4-chlorobenzhydrol with high enantiomeric excess. The space-time yields for (S)-4-chlorophenylpyridylmethanol and (R)-4-chlorobenzhydrol increased dramatically to as high as 263.4 g∙L-1 day-1 and 150 g∙L-1 day-1, respectively, which, to our knowledge, is the highest reported yield to date. These results show that the biocatalytic approach with seq5-D150I may be practical for future industrial applications.Key points An alcohol dehydrogenase was engineered based on binding free energy analysis. The mutant seq5-D150I obtained a threefold increase in kcat and a low Km. Two important pharmaceutical intermediates were obtained with high space-time yield.

Military aircrew are occupationally exposed to a high-G environment. A tolerance test and surveillance is necessary for military aircrew before flight training. A cardiac force index (CFI) has been developed to assess long-distance running by health technology. We added the parameter CFI to the G tolerance test and elucidated the relationship between the CFI and G tolerance. A noninvasive device, BioHarness 3.0, was used to measure heart rate (HR) and activity while resting and walking on the ground. The formula for calculating cardiac function was CFI = weight × activity/HR. Cardiac force ratio (CFR) was calculated by walking CFI (WCFI)/resting CFI (RCFI). G tolerance included relaxed G tolerance (RGT) and straining G tolerance (SGT) tested in the centrifuge. Among 92 male participants, the average of RCFI, WCFI, and CFR were 0.02 ± 0.04, 0.15 ± 0.04, and 10.77 ± 4.11, respectively. Each 100-unit increase in the WCFI increased the RGT by 0.14 G and the SGT by 0.17 G. There was an increased chance of RGT values higher than 5 G and SGT values higher than 8 G according to the WCFI increase. Results suggested that WCFI is positively correlated with G tolerance and has the potential for G tolerance surveillance and programs of G tolerance improvement among male military aircrew.

A novel Gram-stain-positive, facultatively aerobic, slightly halophilic, endospore-forming bacterium, designated G6-18T, was isolated from saline soil collected in Yingkou, Liaoning, PR China. Cells of strain G6-18T grew at 10-37 °C (optimum, 30 °C), at pH 6.0-9.0 (optimum, pH 8.0) and in the presence of 2-15 % (w/v) NaCl (optimum, 5 %). The strain could be clearly distinguished from the related species of the genus Paraliobacillus by its phylogenetic position and biochemical characteristics. It presented MK-7 as the major quinone and the dominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, C16 : 0 and iso-C14 : 0. The polar lipids consisted of diphosphatidylglycerol and phosphatidylglycerol as the major components. The G+C content of strain G6-18T genome was 35.3 mol%. 16S rRNA analysis showed that strain G6-18T had the highest similarity to Paraliobacillus ryukyuensis DSM 15140T, reaching 97.0 %, followed by Paraliobacillus quinghaiensis CGMCC 1.6333T with a value of 96.3 %. The average nucleotide identity values between strain G6-18T and Paraliobacillus ryukyuensis DSM 15140T, Paraliobacillus sedimins KCTC 33762T, Paraliobacillus quinghaiensis CGMCC 1.6333T and Paraliobacillus zengyii DSM 107811T were 74.3, 72.0, 73.2 and 72.8 %, respectively, and the digital DNA-DNA hybridization values between strain G6-18T and the neighbouring strains were 15.6, 13.8, 14.2 and 14.2 %, respectively. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic inferences, strain G6-18T represents a novel species of the genus Paraliobacillus, for which the name Paraliobacillus salinarum sp. nov. (=CGMCC 1.12058T=DSM 25428T) is proposed.

Phosphorescent iridium(III) complexes have been widely researched for the fabrication of efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In this work, three red Ir(III) complexes named Ir-1, Ir-2, and Ir-3, with Ir-S-C-S four-membered framework rings, were synthesized efficiently at room temperature within 5 min using sulfur-containing ancillary ligands with electron-donating groups of 9,10-dihydro-9,9-dimethylacridine, phenoxazine, and phenothiazine, respectively. Due to the same main ligand of 4-(4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)quinazoline, all Ir(III) complexes showed similar photoluminescence emissions at 622, 619, and 622 nm with phosphorescence quantum yields of 35.4%, 50.4%, and 52.8%, respectively. OLEDs employing these complexes as emitters with the structure of ITO (indium tin oxide)/HAT-CN (dipyra-zino[2,3-f,2',3'-h]quinoxaline-2,3,6,7,10,11-hexacarbonitrile, 5 nm)/TAPC (4,4'-cyclohexylidenebis[N,N-bis-(4-methylphenyl)aniline], 40 nm)/TCTA (4,4″,4″-tris(carbazol-9-yl)triphenylamine, 10 nm)/Ir(III) complex (10 wt%): 2,6DCzPPy (2,6-bis-(3-(carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)pyridine, 10 nm)/TmPyPB (1,3,5-tri(mpyrid-3-yl-phenyl)benzene, 50 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (100 nm) achieved good performance. In particular, the device based on complex Ir-3 with the phenothiazine unit showed the best performance with a maximum brightness of 22,480 cd m-2, a maximum current efficiency of 23.71 cd A-1, and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 18.1%. The research results suggest the Ir(III) complexes with a four-membered ring Ir-S-C-S backbone provide ideas for the rapid preparation of Ir(III) complexes for OLEDs.

A Gram-staining-negative, non-motile, aerobic bacterium, designated 1-3T, was isolated from oil reservoir water collected from Liaohe oilfield, north-east of China. Growth was observed at 15-40 °C (optimum 37 °C) and pH 6-10 (optimum 7). The strain can grow under nitrogen-limiting condition. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that the novel isolate was most closely related to Siccirubricoccus deserti SYSU D8009T (96.7%), followed by Paracraurococcus ruber NS89T (95.7%) and Belnapia rosea CPCC 100156T (94.9%). Genome sequencing revealed a genome size of 6.43 Mbp and a G+C content of 71.3 mol%. The average nucleotide identity values and digital DNA-DNA hybridization between 1-3T and the reference strains were all below the cut-off level (95-96% and 70%, respectively) for species delineation. The strain possessed the cytochrome P450 enzyme, which has the potential to degrade oil. The respiratory quinone was Q-10 and the major fatty acids were summed feature 8 (C18:1 ω7c/C18:1 ω6c, 38.8%), C16:0 (25.6%) and C19:0 cyclo ω8c (22.5%). The polar lipids of strain 1-3T comprised diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine and three unidentified aminolipids. Based on the genotypic and phenotypic characteristics, strain 1-3T represents a novel species of genus Siccirubricoccus, for which the name Siccirubricoccus phaeus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain of Siccirubricoccus phaeus is 1-3T (= CGMCC 1.16799T = LMG 31398T).

PURPOSE: To describe and evaluate the application of a new 3-D printing-assisted personalized macular buckle for patients with myopic foveoschisis (MFS). METHODS: Twelve eyes of 12 patients with MFS were included in this study. Preoperative MRI images were subsequently measured after marker implantation and imported into the MIMICS software for the 3-D reconstruction of a virtual model of an eyeball and a marker. The virtual eyeball model was designed according to the degree of retinoschisis, which was measured using optical coherence tomography preoperatively. A macular buckle was designed using a titanium stent, assisted by 3-D printing; furthermore, it was surgically placed in combination with pars plana vitrectomy. Visual acuity, axial length and anatomic outcomes were analysed pre- and postoperatively. RESULTS: Macular schisis in all patients was completely resolved after the surgery without any postoperative complications. The mean postoperative best corrected visual acuity (LogMAR) improved significantly from 1.21 to 0.92 during the 6-month follow-up period (p < 0.001) and reached 0.9 (p < 0.001) after 2 years. The axial length was significantly shortened during the 2 years postoperatively follow-up period (p < 0.01). The average axial lengths in all patients decreased from 30.62 mm preoperatively to 29.81 mm 1 month postoperatively and remained around 30.16 mm from 1 year after the surgery. CONCLUSION: The 3-D printing technique is useful to predict the indentation height and position of the macular buckle. The 3D-printing-assisted macular buckle, in combination with vitrectomy, is an effective, safe and accurate treatment modality for MFS.
