RESUMEN

Background: Homework is a common educational task given to students around the world. It demands mental exertion, but staying focused can be challenging, especially for K-12 students. Too much homework can increase their cognitive load and mental fatigue, leading to decreased motivation and performance. This can cause boredom with homework and learning. To lessen their load and make homework more effective, it is important to establish the connection between homework duration and academic achievement. Objectives: To evaluate the relationship between homework time and academic performance among K-12 students. Search Methods: On November 5, 2021, we retrieved articles from a variety sources. Firstly, we searched 10 electronic databases for related publications, including Academic Search Premier, APA PsycArticles, APA PsycInfo, Business Source Premier, Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), Journal Storage (JSTOR), Learning and Technology Library (LearnTechLib), OCLC FirstSearch, Social Sciences Citation Index (Web of Science), and Teacher Reference Center. We also searched two publisher platforms: ScienceDirect and Taylor & Francis Online Database. Secondly, we consulted five educational organization website such as, American Educational Research Association, Best Evidence Encyclopedia, Education Endowment Foundation, European Educational Research Association, What Works Clearinghouse, and the Open Grey database for unpublished studies. We then searched Open Dissertations and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global databases to locate the relevant dissertations and theses. Additionally, we hand-searched seven educational journals to identify unpublished documents, reports, and potential studies not indexed in the databases. Lastly, we searched Campbell Library to identify relevant reviews and primary (and nearly eligible studies) in these reviews. We also searched Google Scholar for related studies and checked the citations of eligible studies as well as their bibliographies. Selection Criteria: Studies with the following criteria were included: - Population: K-12 school students with no disabilities or not attending special education schools;- Intervention: Homework assigned regularly by schoolteachers to students to complete during non-school hours;- Comparison: Different time spent on the homework;- Outcomes: Academic performance was the primary outcome. The secondary outcomes were academic motivation and the quality of homework;- Study design: Treatment-control group design or comparison group design studies. Data Collection and Analysis: We reviewed the titles, abstracts, and full texts of the retrieved records. Our team extracted and coded all relevant information from the studies that met our inclusion criteria. To evaluate the risk of bias, we used the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for randomized controlled trials and ROBINS-I for non-randomized controlled trials. A random-effect meta-analysis was conducted to determine the effect of homework on academic achievement as compared to no homework. A funnel plot, trim-and-fill method and Egger's test were used to test for any publication bias. Due to the insufficient data on homework duration and academic achievement, we analyzed these data using qualitative synthesis. Main Results: Eleven publications were identified that examined the relationship between homework duration and academic outcomes using an experimental design. Based on their focus, we categorized them into two groups: comparisons of homework with no homework and comparison of homework with less homework. There were 10 articles with 14 independent reports that compared academic performance between students who did homework and those who did not. Overall, the meta-analysis revealed that the students who did homework had better academic performance than that those who did not (n = 14; g = 0.45, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.24-0.66; Q = 454.30, I 2 = 71.30%, τ 2 = 0.11), especially in arithmetic computation (n = 5; g = 0.46, 95% CI: 0.17-0.75; Q = 13.03, I 2 = 69.29%, τ 2 = 0.07) and arithmetic problems solving (n = 6; g = 0.17, 95% CI: 0.02-0.33; Q = 6.87, I 2 = 27.17%, τ 2 = 0.01), but not in arithmetic concepts (n = 3, g = -0.02, 95% CI: -0.22-0.18; Q = 1.46, I 2 = 0.00%, τ 2 = 0.00). Two experiments explored the effectiveness of homework moderated by homework time. In Koch (1965), the effects of long daily homework (20-30 min) and short daily homework (10-15 min) were compared. The authors found that achievement in arithmetic concepts was higher with long homework assignments every day. Recently, Dolean and Lervag (2021) confirmed the effect of homework on writing skills, and their findings were consistent with those of Koch (1965), who found that increasing time spent on homework was associated with greater writing achievement (average 20 min each time). Authors' Conclusions: Homework could be used as a supplement to enhance the academic performance of primary school students. However, the optimal amount of time they should dedicate each day to homework to achieve the best results remains uncertain. More high-quality experiments are needed to determine the ideal homework duration for these students. Furthermore, additional research is required to understand the impact of homework on secondary school students.

RESUMEN

Purpose: This retrospective cohort study aimed to analyze the relationship between tongue color and coronary artery stenosis severity in 282 patients after underwent coronary angiography. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted to collect data from patients who underwent coronary angiography in the Department of Cardiology, Shanghai Jiading District Central Hospital from October 1, 2023 to January 15, 2024. All patients were divided into four various stenosis groups. The tongue images of each patient was normalized captured, tongue body (TC_) and tongue coating (CC_) data were converted into RGB and HSV model parameters using SMX System 2.0. Four supervised machine learning classifiers were used to establish a coronary artery stenosis grading prediction model, including random forest (RF), logistic regression, and support vector machine (SVM). Accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score were used as classification indicators to evaluate the training and validation performance of the model. SHAP values were furthermore used to explore the impacts of features. Results: This study finally included 282 patients, including 164 males (58.16%) and 118 females (41.84%). 69 patients without stenosis, 70 patients with mild stenosis, 65 patients with moderate stenosis, and 78 patients with severe stenosis. Significant differences of tongue parameters were observed in the four groups [TC_R (P = 0.000), TC_G (P = 0.003), TC_H (P = 0.001) and TC_S (P = 0.024),CC_R (P = 0.006), CC_B (P = 0.023) and CC_S (P = 0.001)]. The SVM model had the highest predictive ability, with AUC values above 0.9 in different stenosis groups, and was particularly good at identifying mild and severe stenosis (AUC = 0.98). SHAP value showed that high values of TC_RIGHT_R, low values of CC_LEFT_R were the most impact factors to predict no coronary stenosis; high CC_LEFT_R and low TC_ROOT_H for mild coronary stenosis; low TC_ROOT_R and CC_ROOT_B for moderate coronary stenosis; high CC_RIGHT_G and low TC_ROOT_H for severe coronary stenosis. Conclusion: Tongue color parameters can provide a reference for predicting the degree of coronary artery stenosis. The study provides insights into the potential application of tongue color parameters in predicting coronary artery stenosis severity. Future research can expand on tongue features, optimize prediction models, and explore applications in other cardiovascular diseases.

RESUMEN

Purpose: To analyse the current status of outcome indicators in randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for the treatment of coronary heart disease (CHD) with deficiency of qi and yin, and to provide a basis for constructing a core indicator set (COS) for TCM treatment of CHD. Methods: We searched the database of China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), PubMed,etc. 8 databases in the last 5 years. RCTs of TCM for CHD included in core journals were evaluated for the risk of bias of the included studies, and the current status of the selection of outcome indicators was statistically analysed. Results: A total of 39 RCTs with a sample size of 44~398 cases were included, and 164 outcome indicators were reported, with a frequency of 383 applications. The outcome indicators were categorised into 6 indicator domains according to their functional attributes, which were, in descending order, safety indicators, physicochemical examination, effective rate, economic assessment, disease evidence score, and quality of life. The top 3 indicators in terms of frequency of application of outcome indicators were safety indicators, physical and chemical examination indicators, and efficiency, among which electrocardiogram, inflammation indicators, and clinical efficacy were the most frequently used; there were many different types of measurement tools for outcome indicators, among which total efficiency and TCM symptom points were the most frequently used; the time point of measurement was not the same. Conclusion: The RCTs of TCM for CHD in the last 5 years have many shortage in the selection of outcome indicators, and should actively promote the construction of the COS of TCM for CHD.

RESUMEN

Background: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers individualized treatment for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) through pattern differentiation, but the subjectivity of TCM diagnoses can lead to inconsistent outcomes. Integrating machine learning (ML) offers an objective basis to support TCM diagnoses. This study aims to evaluate various feature selection techniques and multi-label ML algorithms to develop an effective predictive model for classifying TCM patterns in PCOS patients, thereby enhancing diagnostic standardization and treatment personalization. Methods: The study utilized a dataset comprising 432 patients with PCOS, exhibiting one or more of five TCM patterns. Feature selection began with Variance Thresholding (VT), followed by a comparison of five advanced techniques: Statistical Analysis Test, Recursive Feature Elimination with Cross-Validation (RFECV), Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator Regression, BorutaShap, and ReliefF. To ascertain the most effective model for predicting PCOS TCM patterns, four ML algorithms-Support Vector Machine, Logistic Regression, Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Artificial Neural Networks-were evaluated against the identified feature set. Results: VT reduced the feature count from 224 to 174. RFECV emerged as the most effective feature selection method, identifying 67 key features. XGBoost emerged as the top-performing model, demonstrating superior testing accuracy (0.7870), F1 score (0.9519), and Hamming loss (0.0481) with RFECV-optimized features. Conclusions: The RFECV-XGBoost model proved effective for classifying TCM patterns in PCOS. It emphasizes the necessity of precise feature selection and the significant capabilities of ML in advancing TCM pattern diagnostics, marking a significant step toward enhancing precise and personalized healthcare in biomedical studies.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Patients with Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) experienced endocrine disorders that may present vascular function changes. This study aimed to classify and predict PCOS by radial pulse wave parameters using machine learning (ML) methods and to provide evidence for objectifying pulse diagnosis in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). METHODS: A case-control study with 459 subjects divided into a PCOS group and a healthy (non-PCOS) group. The pulse wave parameters were measured and analyzed between the two groups. Seven supervised ML classification models were applied, including K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Trees, Random Forest, Logistic Regression, Voting, and Long Short Term Memory networks (LSTM). Parameters that were significantly different were selected as input features and stratified k-fold cross-validations training was applied to the models. RESULTS: There were 316 subjects in the PCOS group and 143 subjects in the healthy group. Compared to the healthy group, the pulse wave parameters h3/h1 and w/t from both left and right sides were increased while h4, t4, t, As, h4/h1 from both sides and right t1 were decreased in the PCOS group (P < 0.01). Among the ML models evaluated, both the Voting and LSTM with ensemble learning capabilities, demonstrated competitive performance. These models achieved the highest results across all evaluation metrics. Specifically, they both attained a testing accuracy of 72.174% and an F1 score of 0.818, their respective AUC values were 0.715 for the Voting and 0.722 for the LSTM. CONCLUSION: Radial pulse wave signal could identify most PCOS patients accurately (with a good F1 score) and is valuable for early detection and monitoring of PCOS with acceptable overall accuracy. This technique can stimulate the development of individualized PCOS risk assessment using mobile detection technology, furthermore, gives physicians an intuitive understanding of the objective pulse diagnosis of TCM. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Not applicable.

RESUMEN

Bibliotherapy is an important part of art therapy and many publications regarding bibliotherapy have been published in the past. However, there has none about the scientometric study to systematically analyze the development and emerging research trends on bibliotherapy. Therefore, we performed a scientometric investigation to describe trends of this theme. All publications related to bibliotherapy published from 1980 to 2020 were identified and selected from Science Citation Index Expanded, Social Sciences Citation Index, and Arts & Humanities Citation Index of Web of Science Core Collection. VOSviewer was used to create collaborative network plots of countries, institutions, and authors and to perform cluster analysis of keywords. A total of 703 articles were searched, and we retrieved the 100 most cited articles published by 146 institutions from 15 countries in 57 academic journals. The United States occupied a leading position in the field of bibliotherapy and Linköping University was the most productive institution. Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology was the most productive journal. Andersson G, Carlbring P, and Cuijpers P may have an important influence on bibliotherapy research. The applications in depression, anxiety, panic disorder, insomnia, and aphasia are the hot themes. This scientometric review provided a comprehensive understanding of the bibliotherapy research using quantitative and qualitative methods, which can provide references for researchers in the bibliotherapy field. As investigators continue to work, we look forward to the development of bibliotherapy efficacy and the implementation form and steps.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Smoking is responsible for 9 out of 10 deaths related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and this number can be reduced by quitting smoking. In this study, the effect of different interventions on smoking cessation of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease was assessed through a network meta-analysis. METHODS: Eight databases were searched to obtain randomized controlled trials involving different interventions for smoking cessation in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. The Cochrane Handbook tool was employed to assess the risk bias of included studies. Network meta-analysis was performed using STATA software. RESULTS: A total of 23 studies involving 13,480 patients were included. Eight studies were rated as having a high risk of bias, seven studies had a low risk, and in eight studies, the risk was unclear. All studies employed 13 different interventions, including eight monotherapies and five combination therapies. Network meta-analysis showed that a combination of behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy was superior in achieving patients' smoking cessation compared to monotherapy. Moreover, varenicline was more helpful for smoking cessation than other single interventions. The final surface under the cumulative ranking curve value indicated that cognitive behavior therapy combined with bupropion achieved the best smoking cessation effect. CONCLUSIONS: The obtained results indicate that a combination of behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy is most powerful in helping chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients to quit smoking. Researchers should focus more on the safety of pharmacotherapeutic interventions. Moreover, more high-quality trials investigating the stability of evidence levels of different interventions on abstinence must be conducted.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: A network meta-analysis (NMA) was conducted to investigate the effect of varenicline (VAR), bupropion (BUP), and nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) on smoking cessation. METHODS: Eight databases were searched in May 2021, and only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) using varenicline, bupropion, or NRT (single or combined) for smoking cessation were included. The risk of bias in the included RCTs was assessed using the Cochrane Handbook tool. Stata 15.1 software was used to perform NMA, and the quality of the evidence was evaluated using Confidence in Network Meta-analysis (CINeMA). FINDINGS: Twenty RCTs involving 16,702 smokers were included. The risk of bias results showed that 10 RCTs were rated as high, three were low, and seven were unclear. A total of 21 pairs were compared based on seven interventions. The NMA showed that, compared to the placebo (PLA), the other six interventions had significant efficacy in smoking cessation, where VAR + BUP showed the best effect of all treatments (odds ratio (OR) = 6.08, 95% confidence interval (CI) [3.47, 10.66]). Moreover, VAR + BUP was superior to VAR + NRT (OR = 1.66, 95% CI [1.07, 2.59]) and the three monotherapies (VAR, BUP, and NRT). In the monotherapies, the results of pairwise comparisons of VAR, BUP, and NRT did not show significant differences. Finally, the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) value indicated that VAR + BUP had the greatest probability of becoming the best intervention. CONCLUSIONS: The efficacy of VAR, BUP, and NRT alone increased the odds of smoking abstinence better than the placebo, combined interventions were superior to monotherapy, and VAR combined with other interventions had a better smoking cessation effect.

RESUMEN

The outbreak of COVID-19 has exerted an enormous impact on society, enterprises, and individuals. It has affected the work attitudes and psychology of employees to a certain extent and their job stress (JS) has also augmented accordingly, leading to increased turnover intention (TI). With the survey responses of 720 employees of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in China as the sample, we studied the impact of COVID-19 related JS and TI with the moderating effect of perceived organizational support (POS). We utilized linear and multiple regression analysis using Windows SPSS 25. The research findings indicated that the JS caused by COVID-19 in the first affected region (Hubei) was significantly stronger than that in other regions (non-Hubei). JS had a significant positive relationship with employees' TI, while POS had a significant negative connection with employees' TI. We also identified that POS weakened the positive association between JS and employees' TI. These findings are expected to be conducive to and conductive for the upcoming theoretical and empirical investigations as the founding guidelines, as well as for managers in formulating effective policies to curb JS, which would ultimately be helpful in reducing TI.

RESUMEN

To probe the motivational roles of hedonic gratification and social gratification in giving "Like" feedback on social media, we developed a set of novel pictures to simulate WeChat Moments. We subsequently examined how the personality trait of extraversion and stimulus content characteristics (e.g., emotional valence, personal relevance) influenced "Liking" behavior. A 2 (extraversion: extrovert group vs. introvert group) × 3 (emotional valence: positive vs. neutral vs. negative) × 2 (personal relevance: personally relevant vs. personally irrelevant)-mixed experimental design was applied to data obtained from 56 WeChat Moments users. These participants included 28 individuals with the highest extraversion scale scores (the extrovert group), and 28 individuals with the lowest extraversion scale scores (the introvert group), according to the NEO Five-Factor Inventory. Briefly, participants observed pictures on an interface similar to that of WeChat Moments and were given the option to "Like" each picture. "Like" rates and response time were then compared across groups and conditions by applying a mixed-design analysis of variance. Pearson's correlation coefficients were calculated to explore relationships between the "Like" rates under each condition and the scores for each personality trait. Compared with the neutral pictures, the positive and negative pictures were "Liked" more and less frequently, respectively (F 2, 108 = 46.22, p < 0.001). Compared with the poster-unrelated pictures, the personally related pictures were "Liked" more frequently (F 1, 54 = 19.54, p < 0.001). In the extrovert group, the frequency of "Likes" given to unrelated negative content positively associated with neuroticism (r = 0.42, p = 0.025) and negatively associated with conscientiousness (r = -0.46, p = 0.014). No correlations were observed in the introvert group. Compared with not giving "Like" feedback, participants gave "Likes" to positive and negative pictures more quickly (p = 0.035) and slowly (p < 0.001), respectively. These results support the hypothesis that hedonic gratification and social gratification motivate "Like" feedback for positive content and personally related content, respectively. "Liking" behavior was not affected by extraversion, but was related to neuroticism and conscientiousness. Content-related differences in time intervals for giving "Like" feedback in this study suggest that people do not hesitate to give "Like" feedback to positive content on WeChat Moments, yet linger in deciding to give "Like" feedback to negative content.

RESUMEN

Graphite oxide and its exfoliated counterpart, graphene oxide, are important precursors for the large-scale production of graphene-based materials and many relevant applications. The current batch-style preparation of graphite oxide suffers from safety concern, long reaction time, and nonuniform product quality, due to the large volume of reactors and slow energy exchange. Reaction in microchannels can largely enhance the oxidization efficiency of graphite due to the enhanced mass transfer and extremely quick energy exchange, by which the controllable oxidization of graphite is achieved in ≈2 min. Comprehensive characterizations show that the graphene oxide obtained through the microfluidic strategy has features like those prepared in laboratory beakers and industrial reactors, yet with the higher oxidization degree and more epoxy groups. More importantly, the microfluidic preparation allows for on-line monitoring of the oxidization by Raman spectroscopy, ready for the dynamical control of reaction condition and product quality. The capability of continuous preparation is also demonstrated by showing the assembly of fibers and reduction of graphene oxide in microfluidic channels, and the applicability of graphene oxide prepared from the microfluidic strategy for thermally and electrically conductive films.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a cross-sectional survey on the application status of the Grades of Recommendations Assessment Development and Evaluation (GRADE) in Cochrane systematic reviews (CSRs) of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We searched CSRs of TCM from the inception to December 2020 in the Cochrane Library database. General characteristics and details of GRADE were extracted. RESULTS: Among 226 CSRs of TCM, 86 (38.05%) involving 711 outcomes used GRADE to rate the certainty of evidence. Topics mainly focused on genitourinary diseases (17.44%), diseases of the musculoskeletal system or connective tissue (11.63%), and diseases of the nervous system (10.47%). Only 15.89% of the outcomes reported high or moderate certainty of evidence. Acupuncture was the most common intervention. There were no significant differences in evidence certainty between acupuncture and non-acupuncture, between TCM alone and integrated Chinese and western medicine, or between Chinese patent medicines and non-Chinese patent medicines (P > 0.05). Among 1 273 instances of downgrading, 44.62% were due to the risk of bias and 40.14% due to imprecision. CONCLUSION: Overall, GRADE approach is not widely used in CSRs of TCM. The certainty of evidence is generally low to very low, mainly because of the serious risk of bias and imprecision.

RESUMEN

Based on literature research and Delphi expert consensus method, the important acupoints for cancer pain was summarized to provide evidence basis for the formulation of Clinical Practice Guide of Acupuncture in the Treatment of Cancer Pain. Through systematic search of Chinese and English databases, 28 clinical studies regarding acupuncture for cancer pain were included. The acupoint selection methods and high-frequency acupoints were summarized and analyzed. Based on this, a Delphi questionnaire was designed and two rounds of questionnaire survey on 30 experts in acupuncture and tumor related fields in China and abroad were conducted. As a result, it was suggested that the individualized acupoint selection should be adopted for acupuncture treatment of cancer pain, with Zusanli (ST 36), Hegu (LI 4), Taichong (LR 3), Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Yanglingquan (GB 34) and ashi points as the main acupoints. Combined with clinical research evidence and expert consensus, the important acupoints for cancer pain were identified. However, clinical acupoint selection still needed further research and refinement.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Although a number of systematic reviews and meta-analyses of saffron (Crocus sativus L.) have been published, no study has comprehensively summarized the clinical evidence from meta-analyses, or assessed the reporting or methodological quality of these reviews. PURPOSE: The present meta-research study was designed to fill the gaps in knowledge to inform future studies and allow enhanced clinical decision-making on saffron. METHODS: The PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and CNKI databases were systematically searched from inception to April 3 rd, 2021, for meta-analyses of clinical trials that assessed the efficacy and safety of saffron. PRISMA 2009 and AMSTAR-2 were employed to assess the reporting and methodological quality of meta-analyses identified in the search, respectively. The present study was registered on PROSPERO with registration number CRD42020220274. RESULTS: Nineteen eligible systematic reviews with meta-analyses published in English were identified from 235 records. These meta-analyses were published in 12 peer-reviewed journals from 2013 to 2021. The heterogeneous results indicated that saffron significantly reduced fasting blood glucose, waist circumference, diastolic blood pressure, concentrations of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and improved symptoms of depression, cognitive function and sexual dysfunction compared with controls (mainly placebos). Common side effects of saffron consumption included nausea, dry mouth, poor appetite, and headache, but no serious adverse reactions were reported. Primary analysis and sensitivity analysis confirmed that the reporting and methodological quality of reviews included in the study were highly correlated (p < 0.001). The quality of meta-analyses of saffron requires improvement by including a structured abstract, a prospective protocol and registration, explanation of the study designs within each study that is reviewed, the searches, risk of bias assessment, literature selection, and reporting of funding sources. CONCLUSION: The available evidence indicates that saffron is a safe plant for administration as a medicine and can improve diverse clinical outcomes, but the scientific quality of the published systematic reviews needs to be improved. Moreover, the clinical effects of saffron need to be confirmed through high-quality randomized trials in multiple countries with large sample sizes.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Heavy ion radiotherapy (HIRT) has great advantages as tumor radiotherapy. METHODS: Based on 1,558 literatures from core collections of Web of Science from 1980 to 2020, this study visually analyzes the evolution of HIRT research, and sorts out the hotspots and trends of HIRT research using CiteSpace software. RESULTS: Research on HIRT has received more extensive attention over the last 40 years. The development of HIRT is not only closely related to radiation and oncology, but also closely related to the development of human society. In terms of citation frequency, "International Journal of Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics" was the top journal. In terms of influence, "Radiotherapy and Oncology" was the top journal. "Radiation therapy" and "carbon ion radiotherapy" were the two most frequently used keywords in this field. CONCLUSION: The evolution of the HIRT research has occurred in approximately three stages, including technological exploration, safety and effectiveness research and technological breakthroughs. Finally, some suggestions for future research are put forward.
