RESUMEN

This study applied multivariate statistical analysis (MSA) to synthetic data simulated by a river water quality model to verify whether the MSA can correctly infer the pollution scenario assigned in the river water quality model. The results showed that when assessing the number and possible locations of pollution sources based on the results of cluster analysis (CA), two instead of three pollution point source were identified when considering the hydraulic variations of surface water. When discussing the principal component analysis (PCA) result, the second principal component (PC2) and the Pearson correlation coefficients among the pollutants should also be considered, which can infer that Cu, Pb, Cr, and Ni are contributed by the same pollutant point source, and Cu is also influenced by another pollutant point source. This result also implies that the solid and liquid partition coefficients (Kd) of pollutants can affect the interpretation of the PCA results, so the Kd values should be determined before tracing the pollution sources to facilitate the evaluation of the source characteristics and potential targets. This study established a working framework for surface water pollution traceability to enhance the effectiveness of pollution traceability.

RESUMEN

Many studies have been conducted on phytoextraction; however, non-native hyperaccumulator species are not suitable for the natural environment of Taiwan in many cases. Drawing upon previous results, the growth and heavy metal accumulation in artificially cadmium-contaminated soils were compared for five local garden flower species. The treatments included a control (CK), 9.73 +/- 0.05 mg kg(-1) (Cd-10), and 17.6 +/- 0.8 mg kg(-1) (Cd-20). All plants were harvested at 35 days after transplanting and analyzed for Cd content. Cd accumulation in the shoot of French marigold (Tagetes patula L.) and Impatiens (Impatiens walleriana Hook. f.) grown in Cd-20 treatment were 66.3 +/- 6.5 and 100 +/- 11 mg kg(-1), which equated to a removal of 0.80 +/- 0.11 and 0.60 +/- 0.37 mg Cd plant(-1), respectively. The maximum Cd accumulation of Impatiens reached the threshold value (100 mg kg(-1)) characteristic of a Cd hyperaccumulator and its bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) were greater than one. Impatiens therefore has the potential to hyperaccumulate Cd from Cd-contaminated soils. With the exception of Garden verbena, significant relationships were found between Cd concentrations in soil extracted by 0.05 M EDTA, 0.005 M DTPA, and 0.01 M CaCl2 and the concentration of Cd in the shoots of the tested garden flowers.

RESUMEN

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is an autosomal dominant disorder caused by a deficiency of C1 esterase inhibitor (C1-INH). Affected individuals have attacks of swelling involving almost any part of the body. We studied a family with 15 living members, including a 16-year-old girl who had 3 attacks of angioedema in 2 years. Her paternal uncle had died of asphyxiation during an attack 15 years previously. We analyzed the blood of each family member for C3, C4, and C1-INH levels and sequenced the SERPING1 (formerly C1NH) gene that codes for C1-INH. Six individuals had decreased serum levels of C4 and C1-INH, and they were all found to have a single nucleotide A deletion at codon 210 of the gene, 1210fsX210, a novel mutation that accounts for the HAE in this family.

RESUMEN

Severe neutrophilia caused by renal cell carcinoma secreting granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a rare manifestation of renal cancer. A 70-year-old woman presented with a 2-year history of severe anemia, severe neutrophilia and elevated serum G-CSF, which completely resolved after radical nephrectomy. Histologic study revealed a histologically high-grade, stage pT1N0M0 renal cell carcinoma. Serum G-CSF level was elevated preoperatively and returned to normal postoperatively. Immunohistochemical study of the tumor tissue using anti-G-CSF monoclonal antibody revealed positive staining in the cancer cells. Careful follow-up of white blood cell count and physical examination for neck lymph node enlargement led to the timely identification of tumor recurrence 17 months after surgery, which resulted in prompt and successful salvage immunotherapy. In this case, G-CSF appeared to contribute to the leukocytosis, as both serum G-CSF level and white blood cell count closely correlated with the clinical tumor growth. White blood cell count should be closely monitored as an indicator of disease activity in patients with G-CSF-producing renal cell carcinoma.
