RESUMEN

Preventing ion migration in perovskite photovoltaics is key to achieving stable and efficient devices. The activation energy for ion migration is affected by the chemical environment surrounding the ions. Thus, the migration of organic cations in lead halide perovskites can be mitigated by engineering their local interactions, for example through hydrogen bonding. Ion migration also leads to ionic losses via interfacial reactions. Undesirable reactivities of the organic cations can be eliminated by introducing protecting groups. In this work, we report bis(2-oxo-3-oxazolidinyl) phosphinic chloride (BOP-Cl) as a perovskite ink additive with the following benefits: (1) The phosphoryl and two oxo groups form six-membered intermolecular hydrogen-bonded rings with the formamidinium cation (FA), mitigating ion migrations. (2) The hydrogen bonding reduces the electrophilicity of the ammonium protons by donating electron density, therefore reducing its reactivity with the surface oxygen on the metal oxide. Furthermore, the molecule can react to form a protecting group on the nucleophilic oxygen at the tin oxide transport layer surface through the elimination of chlorine. As a result, we achieve perovskite solar cells with an efficiency of 25.0% and improved MPP stability T93 = 1200 h at 40-45 °C compared to a control device (T86 = 550 h). In addition, we show a negative correlation between the strength of hydrogen bonding of different phosphine oxide derivatives to the organic cations and the degree of metastable behavior (e.g., initial burn-in) of the device.

BACKGROUND: This study focused on the relationship between adiposity and Rest-Activity Rhythms (RAR), utilizing both parametric cosine-based models and non-parametric algorithms. The emphasis was on the impact of varying measurement periods (7-28 days) on this relationship. METHODS: We retrieved actigraphy data from two datasets, encompassing a diverse cohort recruited from an obesity outpatient clinic and a workplace health promotion program. Participants were required to wear a research-grade wrist actigraphy device continuously for a minimum of four weeks. The final dataset included 115 individuals (mean age 40.7 ± 9.5 years, 51 % female). We employed both parametric and non-parametric methods to quantify RAR using six standard variables. Additionally, the study evaluated the correlations between three key adiposity indices - Body Mass Index (BMI), Visceral Adipose Tissue (VAT) area, and Body Fat Percentage (BF%) - and circadian rhythm indicators, controlling for factors like physical activity, age, and gender. RESULTS: The obesity group displayed a significantly lower relative amplitude (RA) as per non-parametric algorithm findings, with a decreased amplitude noted in the parametric algorithm analysis, in comparison to the overweight and control groups. The relationship between circadian rhythm indicators and adiposity metrics over 7- to 28-day periods was examined. A notable negative correlation was observed between RA and both BMI and VAT, while correlation coefficients between adiposity indicators and non-parametric circadian parameters increased with extended durations of actigraphy data. Specifically, RA over a 28-day period was significantly correlated with BF%, a trend not seen in the 7-day measurement (p = 0.094) in multivariate linear regression. The strength of the correlation between BF% and 28-day RA was more pronounced than that in the 7-day period (p = 0.044). However, replacing RA with amplitude as per parametric cosinor fitting yielded no significant correlations for any of the measurement periods. CONCLUSION: The study concludes that a 28-day measurement period more effectively captures the link between disrupted circadian rhythms and adiposity. Non-parametric algorithms, in particular, were more effective in characterizing disrupted circadian rhythms, especially when extending the measurement period beyond the standard 7 days.

Leaves of the carnivorous sundew plants (Drosera spp.) secrete mucilage that hosts microorganisms, but whether this microbiota contributes to prey digestion is unclear. We identified the acidophilic fungus Acrodontium crateriforme as the dominant species in the mucilage microbial communities, thriving in multiple sundew species across the global range. The fungus grows and sporulates on sundew glands as its preferred acidic environment, and its presence in traps increased the prey digestion process. A. crateriforme has a reduced genome similar to other symbiotic fungi. During A. crateriforme-Drosera spatulata coexistence and digestion of prey insects, transcriptomes revealed significant gene co-option in both partners. Holobiont expression patterns during prey digestion further revealed synergistic effects in several gene families including fungal aspartic and sedolisin peptidases, facilitating prey digestion in leaves, as well as nutrient assimilation and jasmonate signalling pathway expression. This study establishes that botanical carnivory is defined by adaptations involving microbial partners and interspecies interactions.

BACKGROUND: Studying long-term treatment outcomes of TB is time-consuming and impractical. Early and reliable biomarkers reflecting treatment response and capable of predicting long-term outcomes are urgently needed. OBJECTIVES: To develop a pharmacometric multistate model to evaluate the link between potential predictors and long-term outcomes. METHODS: Data were obtained from two Phase II clinical trials (TMC207-C208 and TMC207-C209) with bedaquiline on top of a multidrug background regimen. Patients were typically followed throughout a 24 week investigational treatment period plus a 96 week follow-up period. A five-state multistate model (active TB, converted, recurrent TB, dropout, and death) was developed to describe observed transitions. Evaluated predictors included patient characteristics, baseline TB disease severity and on-treatment biomarkers. RESULTS: A fast bacterial clearance in the first 2 weeks and low TB bacterial burden at baseline increased probability to achieve conversion, whereas patients with XDR-TB were less likely to reach conversion. Higher estimated mycobacterial load at the end of 24 week treatment increased the probability of recurrence. At 120 weeks, the model predicted 55% (95% prediction interval, 50%-60%), 6.5% (4.2%-9.0%) and 7.5% (5.2%-10%) of patients in converted, recurrent TB and death states, respectively. Simulations predicted a substantial increase of recurrence after 24 weeks in patients with slow bacterial clearance regardless of baseline bacterial burden. CONCLUSIONS: The developed multistate model successfully described TB treatment outcomes. The multistate modelling framework enables prediction of several outcomes simultaneously, and allows mechanistically sound investigation of novel promising predictors. This may help support future biomarker evaluation, clinical trial design and analysis.

Apical periodontitis (AP) is featured by a persistent inflammatory response and alveolar bone resorption initiated by microorganisms, posing risks to both dental and systemic health. Nonsurgical endodontic treatment is the recommended treatment plan for AP with a high success rate, but in some cases, periapical lesions may persist despite standard endodontic treatment. Better comprehension of the AP inflammatory microenvironment can help develop adjunct therapies to improve the outcome of endodontic treatment. This review presents an overview of the immune landscape in AP, elucidating how microbial invasion triggers host immune activation and shapes the inflammatory microenvironment, ultimately impacting bone homeostasis. The destructive effect of excessive immune activation on periapical tissues is emphasized. This review aimed to systematically discuss the immunological basis of AP, the inflammatory bone resorption and the immune cell network in AP, thereby providing insights into potential immunotherapeutic strategies such as targeted therapy, antioxidant therapy, adoptive cell therapy and cytokine therapy to mitigate AP-associated tissue destruction.

Studies have reported inconsistent results regarding associations between parental depression and offspring neurodevelopmental disorders, such as developmental delay and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In all, 7,593 children who were born between 1996 and 2010 in Taiwan and had at least one parent with major depressive disorder and 75,930 birth-year- and sex-matched children of parents without major depressive disorder were followed from 1996 or time of birth to the end of 2011. Intergroup differences in neurodevelopmental conditions-including ASD, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), tic disorder, developmental delay, and intellectual disability (ID)-were assessed. Compared with the children in the control group, the children of parents with major depression were more likely [hazard ratio (HR), 95% confidence interval (CI)] to develop ADHD (1.98, 1.80-2.18), ASD (1.52, 1.16-1.94), tic disorder (1.40, 1.08-1.81), developmental delay (1.32, 1.20-1.45), and ID (1.26, 1.02-1.55). Parental depression was associated with offspring neurodevelopmental disorders, specifically ASD, ADHD, developmental delay, ID, and tic disorder. Therefore, clinicians should closely monitor the neurodevelopmental conditions of children of parents with depression.

BACKGROUND: To examine the application of quantitative 2-dimensional phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging (2D PC-MRI) for treating patients with pelvic congestion syndrome (PCS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional analysis by using quantitative 2D PC-MRI data enrolled between April 2017 and Sep 2023. In addition, 32 healthy female controls (HCs) were included. RESULTS: Most patients with PCS presented with chronic pelvic pain and more than half had extra-pelvic venous symptoms (80/81, 98% and 45/81, 56%, respectively). Quantitative 2D PC-MRI analyzed the 81 patients with PCS, 239 patients without PCS, and 32 HCs. The patients with PCS had higher stroke volume (SV), absolute SV (ASV), and mean flux (MF) in the calf region (interstitial pixel shift) than did the HCs. In the left gonadal vein, the patients with PCS had higher SV, backward flow volume (BFV), ASV, and MF and lower forward flow volume (FFV), stroke distance (SD), and mean velocity (MV) than did the HCs. However, the patients with PCS had lower SV, FFV, MF, SD, and MV in the great saphenous veins. Quantitative 2D PC-MRI analysis revealed that the PCS group had higher SV, FFV, BFV, ASV, and MF in the calf region than did the non-PCS group. The variables that most strongly differentiated the patients with PCS from the HCs were SV in the great saphenous veins, SD in the great saphenous veins and left gonadal vein, and MV in the great saphenous veins and left gonadal vein. Caudal flow in the left gonadal vein was identified in half of the patients with PCS (39/81, 48.1%); 14 of them received embolization for left gonadal vein. CONCLUSIONS: In additional to providing an objective 3-dimensional morphology of the pelvic veins and extra-pelvic leaks, quantitative 2D PC-MRI analysis reveals distinct hemodynamic profiles between patients with PCS, those without PCS, and HCs, especially in the gonadal veins and regional perfusion of the calves.

BACKGROUND: Endothelial dysfunction (ED), characterized by markedly reduced nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability, vasoconstriction, and a shift toward a proinflammatory and prothrombotic state, is an important contributor to hypertension, atherosclerosis, and other cardiovascular diseases. Adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is widely involved in cardiovascular development. Przewaquinone A (PA), a lipophilic diterpene quinone extracted from Salvia przewalskii Maxim, inhibits vascular contraction. PURPOSE: Herein, the goal was to explore the protective effect of PA on ED in vivo and in vitro, as well as the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: A human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) model of ED induced by angiotensin II (AngII) was used for in vitro observations. Levels of AMPK, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), nitric oxide (NO), and endothelin-1 (ET-1) were detected by western blotting and ELISA. A mouse model of hypertension was established by continuous infusion of AngII (1000 ng/kg/min) for 4 weeks using osmotic pumps. Following PA and/or valsartan administration, NO and ET-1 levels were measured. The levels of AMPK signaling-related proteins in the thoracic aorta were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were measured using the tail cuff method. Isolated aortic vascular tone measurements were used to evaluate the vasodilatory function in mice. Molecular docking, molecular dynamics, and surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi) were used to confirm AMPK and PA interactions. RESULTS: PA inhibited AngII-induced vasoconstriction and vascular adhesion as well as activated AMPK signaling in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, PA markedly suppressed blood pressure, activated vasodilation in mice following AngII stimulation, and promoted the activation of AMPK signaling. Furthermore, molecular simulations and SPRi revealed that PA directly targeted AMPK. AMPK inhibition partly abolished the protective effects of PA against endothelial dysfunction. CONCLUSION: PA activates AMPK and ameliorates endothelial dysfunction during hypertension.

Fluoride exposure is widespread worldwide and poses a significant threat to organisms, particularly to their gastrointestinal tracts. However, due to limited knowledge of the mechanism of fluoride induced intestinal injury, it has been challenging to develop an effective treatment. To address this issue, we used a series of molecular biology in vitro and in vivo experiments. NaF triggered m6A mediated ferroptosis to cause intestinal damage. Mechanistically, NaF exposure increased the m6A level of SLC7A11 mRNA, promoted YTHDF2 binding to m6A-modified SLC7A11 mRNA, drove the degradation of SLC7A11 mRNA, and led to a decrease in its protein expression, which eventually triggers ferroptosis. Moreover, NaF aggravated ferroptosis of the colon after antibiotics destroyed the composition of gut microbiota. 16 S rRNA sequencing and SPEC-OCCU plots, Zi-Pi relationships, and Spearman correlation coefficients verified that Lactobacillus murinus (ASV54, ASV58, and ASV82) plays a key role in the response to NaF-induced ferroptosis. Collectively, NaF-induced gut microbiota alteration mediates severe intestinal cell injury by inducing m6A modification-mediated ferroptosis. Our results highlight a key mechanism of the gut in response to NaF exposure and suggest a valuable theoretical basis for its prevention and treatment.

Activating leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) mutations cause Parkinson's and phosphorylation of Rab10 by pathogenic LRRK2 blocks primary ciliogenesis in cultured cells. In the mouse brain, LRRK2 blockade of primary cilia is highly cell type specific: For example, cholinergic interneurons and astrocytes but not medium spiny neurons of the dorsal striatum lose primary cilia in LRRK2-pathway mutant mice. We show here that the cell type specificity of LRRK2-mediated cilia loss is also seen in human postmortem striatum from patients with LRRK2 pathway mutations and idiopathic Parkinson's. Single nucleus RNA sequencing shows that cilia loss in mouse cholinergic interneurons is accompanied by decreased glial-derived neurotrophic factor transcription, decreasing neuroprotection for dopamine neurons. Nevertheless, LRRK2 expression differences cannot explain the unique vulnerability of cholinergic neurons to LRRK2 kinase as much higher LRRK2 expression is seen in medium spiny neurons that have normal cilia. In parallel with decreased striatal dopaminergic neurite density, LRRK2 G2019S neurons show increased autism-linked CNTN5 adhesion protein expression; glial cells show significant loss of ferritin heavy chain. These data strongly suggest that loss of cilia in specific striatal cell types decreases neuroprotection for dopamine neurons in mice and human Parkinson's.

Study Objectives: To evaluate the association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and dry eye disease (DED) and analyze the impact of Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) on DED. Methods: This is a retrospective population-based case-control study. Patients who underwent polysomnography in Taiwan from March 1, 2009, to March 1, 2020, were identified from the database of a sleep center. Patients who were diagnosed with keratoconjunctivitis sicca or tear film insufficiency were included. Patients without data from Schirmer's test, lacking tear break-up time values, or with a history of refractive surgery, Sjögren's syndrome, ocular injuries, or a disability in eyelid closure were excluded. All patients with DED enrolled had DED in both eyes. OSA severity between patients with and without DED was compared. Results: In total, 86 patients with DED and 86 age-matched patients without DED were enrolled. Significant differences in apnea-hypopnea index values (patients with DED: 29.1 ± 23.4, patients without DED: 17.9 ± 20.2, P < 0.001), OSA severity (P < 0.001), and lowest oxygen saturation (P = 0.040) between patients with and without DED were observed. A multivariate logistic regression model indicated that the use of CPAP was independently associated with DED after adjustments for OSA severity. Patients undergoing CPAP were at greater risk of developing DED than those not undergoing CPAP (Odds ratio: 3.93, 95% confidence interval: 1.47-10.49, P = 0.006). Conclusion: OSA severity is associated with DED and might be attributed to the use of CPAP.

Many applications of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) involve transfer to functional substrates that can strongly impact their optical and electronic properties. We investigate the impact that substrate interactions have on free carrier densities and defect-related excitonic (XD) emission from MoS2 monolayers grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. C-plane sapphire substrates mimic common hydroxyl-terminated substrates. We demonstrate that transferring MoS2 monolayers to pristine c-plane sapphire dramatically increases the free electron density within MoS2 layers, quenches XD emission, and accelerates exciton recombination at the optical band edge. In contrast, transferring MoS2 monolayers onto inert hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has no measurable influence on these properties. Our findings demonstrate the promise of utilizing substrate engineering to control charge doping interactions and to quench broad XD background emission features that can influence the purity of single photon emitters in TMDs being developed for quantum photonic applications.

BACKGROUND: The inconsistent relationship between chemical exposure and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) has been examined in only a few studies. We investigated the association between paraben exposure and indicators of renal function in a total of 361 individuals recruiting from a representative study. METHOD: The levels of urinary parabens, including methylparaben (MeP), ethylparaben (EtP), propylparaben (PrP), and butylparaben (BuP), were measured using UPLC-MS/MS. The association between paraben exposure and indices of renal function was assessed using multiple logistic regression and Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR). RESULTS: The median levels of urinary parabens in the adult group were significantly higher than those in the minor group, that is, 397 vs. 148 ng/mL for MeP, 38.8 vs. 13.6 ng/mL for EtP, 117 vs. 57.7 ng/mL for PrP, and 6.61 vs. 2.79 ng/mL for BuP (all P < 0.001). In the adult group, multivariate regression models confirmed a positive association between the albumin-to-creatinine ratio and urinary MeP (ß = 0.580) and a positive association of BUN (ß = 0.061) and a negative association of eGFR (ß = -0.051) with urinary EtP (all P < 0.001). In the adult group, compared with the lowest tertile group, the adjusted odds ratio in the third tertile (T3) of urinary EtP levels indicated a 3.08 times increased risk of eGFR abnormalities, followed by the second tertile (T2) with a 2.63 times increased risk. The generalized additive model (GAM) and BKMR models showed a non-linear correlation between urinary EtP levels and early CKD, as well as reduced eGFR. We observed a significant positive cumulative effect of urinary paraben on eGFR, and a significant positive single exposure effect of urinary EtP with eGFR abnormality. CONCLUSION: We found a significant association between exposure to EtP and an increased risk of high BUN levels and decreased eGFR.

We develop a novel metal contact approach using an antimony (Sb)-platinum (Pt) bilayer to mitigate Fermi-level pinning in 2D transition metal dichalcogenide channels. This strategy allows for control over the transport polarity in monolayer WSe2 devices. By adjustment of the Sb interfacial layer thickness from 10 to 30 nm, the effective work function of the contact/WSe2 interface can be tuned from 4.42 eV (p-type) to 4.19 eV (n-type), enabling selectable n-/p-FET operation in enhancement mode. The shift in effective work function is linked to Sb-Se bond formation and an emerging n-doping effect. This work demonstrates high-performance n- and p-FETs with a single WSe2 channel through Sb-Pt contact modulation. After oxide encapsulation, the maximum current density at |VD| = 1 V reaches 170 µA/µm for p-FET and 165 µA/µm for n-FET. This approach shows promise for cost-effective CMOS transistor applications using a single channel material and metal contact scheme.

Background: Listeriosis is caused by the facultative anaerobic bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Infection from Listeria-contaminated food or water is the main etiology. If Listeria travels outside the intestines, it can cause invasive listeriosis, such as sepsis, meningitis, and meningoencephalitis. Invasive illness is especially dangerous for pregnant women and their newborns, elderly people, and people with compromised immune systems or medical conditions such as end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients receiving long-term dialysis. Purpose: Describe the manifestations and hospital outcomes of invasive listeriosis and identify the risk factors for in-hospital and one-year mortality in ESKD patients receiving long-term dialysis. Patients and Methods: This retrospective observational study examined hospitalized patient records at a Taiwanese tertiary medical center from August 1, 2000, to August 31, 2021. ESKD patients on chronic dialysis were identified with invasive listeriosis by blood culture and discharge diagnosis. Over 21 years, we accurately recorded 26 cases. Results: ESKD patients on chronic dialysis with invasive listeriosis have a poor prognosis. Only 53.8% of chronic dialysis patients with invasive listeriosis survived their first hospital episode. 42.3% of hospitalized ESKD patients with invasive listeriosis survived one year later. In univariate analysis, shock, tachypnea (RR ≥ 22), respiratory failure, qSOFA score ≥ 2, and lower initial platelet count were linked to greater in-hospital mortality rates. Conclusion: ESKD patients with invasive listeriosis have a grave prognosis. Our research reveals that an early blood sample for a bacterial culture may identify invasive listeriosis in chronic dialysis patients with fever, nausea or vomiting, confusion, and respiratory distress. This study is the first to identify a lower platelet count and qSOFA score ≥ 2 as markers of high-risk invasive listeriosis in ESKD patients.

Introduction: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is associated with a high mortality rate due to vascular calcification. The role of fetuin-A in aortic arch calcification (AAC) is less well understood. Methods: An analysis of secondary biomarkers was performed on 800 individuals from the biobank using the community database. AAC was defined by radiologists based on imaging. Multiple variables logical analysis was used for risk analysis. Results: A total of 736 individual samples were collected based on age and gender. The average age is 65 ± 10 years, and half the population comprises men. In spite of similar body weight, renal function, and hepatic function, the AAC group had higher blood pressure and fetuin-A levels independently: systolic blood pressure (SBP) index ≥130 mmHg [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) 1.85, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.34-2.57, p = 0.002] and fetuin-A (aOR 0.62, 95% CI 0.50-0.76, p < 0.001). Moreover, it is evident that AAC can be predicted more accurately when combined with SBP ≥130 mmHg and a low fetuin-A level (<358 µg/ml: aOR 5.39, 95% CI 3.21-9.08) compared with the reference. Conclusion: Low fetuin-A levels are significantly correlated with AAC while there is an increased association between vascular calcification and coexisting hypertension.

Introduction: A mini-laparotomy for colorectal cancer (CRC) has been reported to shorten postoperative ileus (POI) and hospital stay. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) plays a role in intestinal tissue inflammation, leading to POI. This study investigated the effects of abdominal wounds and IL-6 levels on POI in patients having CRC surgery. Materials and methods: Forty-three patients with CRC underwent bowel resection. Serum samples were collected preoperatively and at 2, 24, and 48 h after surgery for cytokine quantification by ELISA. Clinical data, including time from surgery to first passage of flatus and postoperative hospital stay, demographic and pathological data, and routine blood tests, were compared statistically with abdominal wound length and the postoperative increments of cytokines (designated as Δ). Results: The length of the abdominal wound showed a significant correlation with clinical variables (length of operation time, time of first flatus passage, and length of postoperative hospital stay) and cytokine variables (IL-6(Δ2 h), IL-8(Δ2 h) and IL-10(Δ2 h). Linear regression analysis showed that the abdominal wound length significantly influenced the operation time, time of first flatus passage, and length of postoperative hospital stay (p < 0.001). The length of the abdominal wound showed a significant influence on the IL-6(Δ2 h) and IL-8(Δ2 h) (p < 0.001, respectively) but no influence on IL-10(Δ2 h). IL-6(Δ2 h), but not IL-8(Δ2 h), significantly influenced the time to first flatus passage and length of hospital stay (p = 0.007, p = 0.006, respectively). The mini-laparotomy approach (wound length <7 cm) led to significantly shortened operation time, time of first flatus passage, length of postoperative stay (p = 0.004, p = 0.003, p = 0.006, respectively) as well as reduced postoperative increment of IL-6(Δ2 h) (p = 0.015). The mini-laparotomy for anterior resection surgery significantly influenced operation time, time of first passage of flatus, length of postoperative stay, and IL-6(Δ2 h). Conclusion: Our study is the first to report the complex interaction among the length of the abdominal wound, IL-6 serum level, recovery of the first passage of flatus, and postoperative hospital stay. These results suggest that smaller abdominal wounds and smaller postoperative IL-6 increments were associated with faster recovery of flatus passage and shorter hospital stays.

One of a major function of programmed cell death (apoptosis) is the removal of cells which suffered oncogenic mutations, thereby preventing cancerous transformation. By making use of a Double-Headed-EP (DEP) transposon, a P element derivative made in our laboratory, we made an insertional mutagenesis screen in Drosophila melanogaster to identify genes which, when overexpressed, suppress the p53-activated apoptosis. The DEP element has Gal4-activatable, outward-directed UAS-promoters at both ends which can be deleted separately in vivo. In the DEP insertion mutants, we used the GMR-Gal4 driver to induce transcription from both UAS-promoters and tested the suppression effect on the apoptotic rough eye phenotype generated by an activated UAS-p53 transgene. By DEP insertions, seven genes were identified which suppressed the p53-induced apoptosis. In four mutants, the suppression effect resulted from single genes activated by one UAS-promoter (Pka-R2, Rga, crol, Spt5). In the other three (Orct2, Polr2M, stg), deleting either UAS-promoter eliminated the suppression effect. In qPCR experiments we found that the genes in the vicinity of the DEP insertion also showed an elevated expression level. This suggested an additive effect of the nearby genes on suppressing apoptosis. In the eucaryotic genomes there are co-expressed gene clusters. Three of the DEP insertion mutants are included and two are in close vicinity of separate co-expressed gene clusters. This raises the possibility that the activity of some of the genes in these clusters may help the suppression of the apoptotic cell death.
