The major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common and severe mental disorder. To identify a reliable biomarker for MDD is important for early diagnosis and prevention. Given easy access and high reproducibility, the structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) is an ideal method to identify the biomarker for depression. In this study, sMRI data of first episode, treatment-naïve 66 MDD patients and 54 sex-, age-, and education-matched healthy controls (HC) were used to identify the differences in gray matter volume (GMV), group-level, individual-level covariance connections. Finally, the abnormal GMV and individual covariance connections were applied to classify MDD from HC. MDD patients showed higher GMV in middle occipital gyrus (MOG) and precuneus (PCun), and higher structural covariance connections between MOG and PCun. In addition, the Allen Human Brain Atlas (AHBA) was applied and revealed the genetic basis for the changes of gray matter volume. Importantly, we reported that GMV in MOG, PCun and structural covariance connectivity between MOG and PCun are able to discriminate MDD from HC. Our results revealed structural underpinnings for MDD, which may contribute towards early discriminating for depression.

Manual materials handling (MMH) contributes to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the workplace. The development and recovery of muscle fatigue are essential in work/rest arrangements for MMH tasks. A pulling experiment, including a muscle fatigue test and a muscle fatigue recovery test, was conducted. In the muscle fatigue test, the participant performed a pulling task on a treadmill with a walking velocity of 1 km/h until they could no longer do so. The load was either 30 or 45 kg. The maximum endurance time (MET) was recorded. The pull strength (PS) of the participant both before and after the pulling task was measured. The subjective ratings of muscle fatigue after the pulling task were recorded. In the muscle fatigue recovery test, the participant took a rest after performing the pulling task. The participants reported their subjective ratings of muscle fatigue on the CR-10 scale after taking a rest for a time period t, where t = 1, 2,…, 6 min. The PS of the participant was then measured again. It was found that the load significantly affected the MET for pulling tasks. The load was insignificant to the decrease of the PS, but was significant to the decrease rate (PS decrease per min) of the PS. The PS decrease rate for the 45 kg condition (30.8 ± 16.5 N/min) was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that of the 30 kg condition (15.4 ± 5.5 N/min). The recovery time significantly affected the PS and CR-10. Two MET models were established to explore the development of muscle fatigue in pulling tasks. A PS model was constructed to describe the recovery of muscle force. A CR-10 model was proposed to show the subjective ratings of recovery. These models are beneficial for determining the work/rest allowance for pulling tasks.

Primary arylsulfonamide functional groups feature prominently in diverse pharmaceuticals. However, natural arylsulfonamides are relatively infrequent. In this work, two novel arylsulfonamide natural products were first synthesized, and then a series of novel molecules derived from natural arylsulfonamides were designed and synthesized, and their in vitro cytotoxic activities against A875, HepG2, and MARC145 cell lines were systematically evaluated. The results indicate that some of these arylsulfonamide derivatives exhibit significantly good cytotoxic activity against the tested cell lines compared with the control 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), such as compounds 10l, 10p, 10q, and 10r. In particular, the potential molecule 10q, containing a carbazole moiety, exhibited the highest inhibitory activity against all tested cell lines, with IC50 values of 4.19 ± 0.78, 3.55 ± 0.63, and 2.95 ± 0.78 µg/mL, respectively. This will offer the potential to discover novel drug-like compounds from the sparsely populated area of natural products that can lead to effective anticancer agents.

BACKGROUND: Literature has demonstrated that diabetes is associated with renal complication and testicular dysfunctions. The current study explored the potential of Tiliacora triandra extract and its major component against diabetic kidney and testicular damages in rats. METHODS: Diabetes was induced by high fat diet/streptozotocin (HFD/STZ) and treated orally with Tiliacora triandra extract (TTE, 100 and 400 mg kg-1 body weight) and its major component, 5,7-dihydroxy-6-oxoheptadecanoic acid (DHA, 25 mg kg-1 body weight) for 30 consecutive days. Testicular activities of testicular enzymes, serum levels of testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), sperm parameters and urinalysis for protein and albumin levels were evaluated. Renal and testicular biomarkers of oxidative stress and pro-inflammation were analysed along with histology. RESULTS: The experimental diabetes induced significant alterations in the levels and activities of indices evaluated compared to non-diabetic normal rats. The 28-day treatment of diabetic rats with TTE and DHA markedly improved activities of testicular enzymes, restored levels of testosterone, LH and FSH and sperm parameters compared to untreated diabetic rats. TTE and DHA abrogated proteinuria and reversed urine albumin level. Testicular and renal oxidative stress and pro-inflammation were attenuated in diabetic rats treated with TTE and DHA. The diabetes-mediated histopathological damage was alleviated in the kidney and testis. CONCLUSION: The protective effect of TTE and DHA against diabetes induced kidney and testicular damages may be related to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

Oxazoles are an important class of biologically active metabolites from nature, and exhibit broad biological activities as the lead for drug discovery. Hinduchelins are a class of unusual natural products with an oxazole unit, isolated from Streptoalloteichus hindustanus, and with a potential iron-chelating ability. These compounds are the first identified naturally occurring unusual oxazole derivatives to possess a catechol unit. However, some of these compounds are not abundant in nature, and thus, the efficient syntheses of these compounds are advantageous in exploring their potential applications. This paper reports the efficient synthesis and bio-evaluation of hinduchelins A-D and their derivatives with convenient procedures and high yields.

Thirty conductivity-temperature-depth profiler casts in the Challenger Deep were conducted during four cruises from December 2015 to February 2017. Two cruises took place in the summer, and two in the winter. The results demonstrated that water characteristics varied seasonally. The temperature minimum values were the same between the four cruises, but its depth was noticeably shallower in the winter than that in the summer. The θ-S diagram indicated that deep water is more saline in the summer than that in winter at the same potential temperature. Mixing is more intense between 5000 and 6800 m in the summer than that in the winter. The dissipation rate and eddy diffusivity vertically averaged between 5000 and 6800 m in the summer were εT = 3.277 × 10-8 m2s-3 and KzT = 2.58 × 10-2 m2s-1, respectively. The geostrophic flows below the reference level of 3000 dbar were cyclonic in the summer, travelling westwards in the northern and eastwards in the southern areas of the Challenger Deep.

We report a new, effective and environmentally friendly protocol for selective aerobic oxidative coupling of arylboronic acids with carboxylic anhydrides in the presence of ligand-free palladium catalyst. The aryl benzoates are obtained in good to excellent yields.
