RESUMEN

Liver fibrosis is characterized by the excessive deposition of extracellular matrix in liver. Chronic liver injury induces the activation of hepatic stellate cell (HSCs), a key step in liver fibrogenesis. The activated HSC is the primary source of ECM and contributes significantly to liver fibrosis. TGFß1 is the most potent pro-fibrotic cytokine. Bromodomain protein 4 (BrD4), an epigenetic reader of histone acetylation marks, was crucial for profibrotic gene expression in HSCs. The present study aimed to investigate the roles of BRD4 in TGFß1-dependent HSC activation and liver fibrosis, focusing on TGFß1-induced alterations of the levels of the fibrotic-related important proteins in HSCs by employing the heterozygous TGFß1 knockout mice and BrD4 knockdown in vivo and in vitro. Results revealed that BrD4 protein level was significantly upregulated by TGFß1 and BrD4 knockdown reduced TGFß1-induced HSC activation and liver fibrosis. BrD4 was required for the influences of TGFß1 on PDGFß receptor and on the pathways of Smad3, Stat3, and Akt. BrD4 also mediated TGFß1-induced increases in histone acetyltransferase p300, the pivotal pro-inflammatory NFkB p65, and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 whereas BrD4 reduced Caspase-3 protein levels in HSCs during liver injury, independent of TGFß1. Further experiments indicated the interaction between TGFß1-induced BrD4 and NFkB p65 in HSCs and in liver of TAA-induced liver injury. Human cirrhotic livers were demonstrated a parallel increase in the protein levels of BrD4 and NFkB p65 in HSCs. This study revealed that BrD4 was a key molecular driver of TGFß1-induced HSC activation and liver fibrosis.

RESUMEN

Epigenetic reader Bromodomain protein 4 (BrD4) functions as a global genomic regulator to direct hepatic stellate cell (HSC) activation (a key step in liver fibrogenesis) and liver fibrosis. The pivotal pro-fibrotic cytokine transforming growth factor-ß1 (TGFß1) signals through both Smad and Stat3 to elicit a wide array of biological effects. Stat3 is widely acknowledged as a regulator of gene transcription and is involved in fibrosis of multiple tissues. The present study focused on BrD4 function implication in the roles of TGFß1-induced Stat3 signaling in HSC activation and liver fibrosis by using heterozygous TGFß1 knockout mice and HSC culture. Results showed that Stat3 was required for TGFß1-induced BrD4 expression in HSCs. BrD4 expression paralleled Stat3 activation in activated HSCs in human cirrhotic livers. BrD4 was involved in the roles of TGFß1-induced Stat3 in HSC activation and liver fibrogenesis. Smad3 bound to phosphorylated-Stat3 and contributed to TGFß1-induced Stat3 signaling. BrD4 expression induced by Stat3 signaling required the early-immediate gene Egr1. Egr1 had a positive feedback on Stat3 activation. In conclusion, a network consisting of Stat3 signaling, Smad3 signaling, Egr1, and BrD4 was involved in the effects of TGFß1 on liver fibrosis, providing new toxicological mechanisms for TGFß1 in liver fibrogenesis.

RESUMEN

Obese patients usually have hyperleptinemia and are prone to develop liver fibrosis. Leptin is intimately linked to liver fibrogenesis, a multi-receptor-driven disease. Gα-Interacting Vesicle-associated protein (GIV) functions as a multimodular signal transducer and a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for Gi controling key signalings downstream of diverse receptors. This study aimed to examine the roles of GIV in leptin-caused liver fibrosis and employed the culture-activated hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) and leptin-deficient mice, respectively. Results indicated that leptin upregulated GIV expression in HSCs. GIV was involved in leptin-induced HSC activation and liver fibrosis. GIV mediated leptin regulation of TIMP1, MMP9, PDGFß receptor and TGFß receptor and was required for leptin stimulating the pathways of Erk1/2, Akt1, and Smad3. GIV was also a mediator for leptin-regulation of Cyclin D1 and Caspase-3 activity but GIV reduced Caspase-3 level independently of leptin in vivo. Erk1/2 signaling, Egr1 and c-Jun were associated with the effect of leptin on GIV expression in HSCs. Leptin-induced Erk1/2 signaling increased Egr1 and p-c-Jun levels and promoted their binding to GIV promoter at the sites between -190 bp and -180 bp and between -382 bp and - 376 bp, respectively. Egr1 knockdown lessened leptin-upregulation of GIV in vitro and in vivo. In human cirrhotic livers, the increase in GIV protein level parallelled with the elevated p-Erk1/2 and Egr1 levels in HSCs. In summary, the unusual signal transducer GIV was identified as an important mediator in leptin-induced liver fibrosis. GIV may have significant implications in liver fibrosis progression of obese patients with hyperleptinaemia.

RESUMEN

Ammonia is considered a contaminant to be removed from wastewater. However, ammonia is a valuable commodity chemical used as the primary feedstock for fertilizer manufacturing. Here we describe a simple and low-cost ammonia gas stripping membrane capable of recovering ammonia from wastewater. The material is composed of an electrically conducting porous carbon cloth coupled to a porous hydrophobic polypropylene support, that together form an electrically conductive membrane (ECM). When a cathodic potential is applied to the ECM surface, hydroxide ions are produced at the water-ECM interface, which transforms ammonium ions into higher-volatility ammonia that is stripped across the hydrophobic membrane material using an acid-stripping solution. The simple structure, low cost, and easy fabrication process make the ECM an attractive material for ammonia recovery from dilute aqueous streams, such as wastewater. When paired with an anode and immersed into a reactor containing synthetic wastewater (with an acid-stripping solution providing the driving force for ammonia transport), the ECM achieved an ammonia flux of 141.3 ± 14.0 g.cm-2.day-1 at a current density of 6.25 mA.cm-2 (69.2 ± 5.3 kg(NH3-N)/kWh). It was found that the ammonia flux was sensitive to the current density and acid circulation rate.

RESUMEN

Recovery of carbon-based resources from waste is a critical need for achieving carbon neutrality and reducing fossil carbon extraction. We demonstrate a new approach for extracting volatile fatty acids (VFAs) using a multifunctional direct heated and pH swing membrane contactor. The membrane is a multilayer laminate composed of a carbon fiber (CF) bound to a hydrophobic membrane and sealed with a layer of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS); this CF is used as a resistive heater to provide a thermal driving force for PDMS that, while a highly hydrophobic material, is known for its ability to rapidly pass gases, including water vapor. The transport mechanism for gas transport involves the diffusion of molecules through the free volume of the polymer matrix. CF coated with polyaniline (PANI) is used as an anode to induce an acidic pH swing at the interface between the membrane and water, which can protonate the VFA molecule. The innovative multilayer membrane used in this study has successfully demonstrated a highly efficient recovery of VFAs by simultaneously combining pH swing and joule heating. This novel technique has revealed a new concept in the field of VFA recovery, offering promising prospects for further advancements in this area. The energy consumption was 3.37 kWh/kg for acetic acid (AA), and an excellent separation factor of AA/water of 51.55 ± 2.11 was obtained with high AA fluxes of 51.00 ± 0.82 g.m-2hr-1. The interfacial electrochemical reactions enable the extraction of VFAs without the need for bulk temperature and pH modification.

RESUMEN

Half of all of China's lakes are on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP), which are mainly distributed at altitudes above 4000 m asl. Being under conditions of progressively intensifying anthropogenic activities and climate change, the debate on whether QTP lakes act as carbon (C) sinks or sources remains unresolved. This study explores QTP lake C exchange processes and characteristics over the past two decades through field monitoring and data integration. Results reveal high lake carbon dioxide (CO2) exchange flux distribution patterns in its western and southern regions and correspondingly low values in its eastern and northern regions. Lake CO2 exchange flux rates also show significant temporal differences where those in the 2000s and 2010s were significantly higher compared to the 2020s. Annual total CO2 emission flux from QTP lakes has increased from 1.60 Tg C a-1 in the 2000s to 6.87 Tg C a-1 in the 2010s before decreasing to 1.16 Tg C a-1 in the 2020s. However, QTP lakes have generally acted as C sinks when annual ice-cover periods are included in the estimation of annual C budgets. Consequently, QTP lakes are gradually evolving towards C sinks. Some small-sized freshwater lakes on the QTP exhibit C sequestration characteristics while low-mid altitude saltwater lakes also act as C sinks. Therefore, owing to the high uncertainties in the estimation of C exchange flux, the QTP lake C sink capacity has been largely underestimated.

RESUMEN

Upon chronic damage to the liver, multiple cytokines stimulate hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), causing the alterations of gene expression profiles and thus leading to HSC activation, a key step in liver fibrogenesis. Activated HSCs are the dominant contributors to liver fibrosis. Bromodomain containing protein 4 (BrD4), an important epigenetic reader, was demonstrated to concentrate on hundreds of enhancers associated with genes involved in multiple profibrotic pathways, thereby directing HSC activation and the fibrotic responses. The present studies were designed to examine the effect of transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGFß1), the most potent pro-fibrotic cytokine, on BrD4 expression in HSCs and, if so, elucidated the underlying mechanisms in vitro and in vivo. The experiments employed the heterogeneous TGFß1 knockout (TGFß1+/- ) mice, gene knockdown in vivo, and a model of thioacetamide (TAA)-induced liver injury. The results revealed that TGFß1 enhanced BrD4 expression in HSCs, which was mediated, at least, by Smad3 signaling and early-immediate gene Egr1 (early growth response-1). TGFß1-induced Smad3 signaling increased Egr1 expression and promoted Egr1 binding to BrD4 promoter at a site around -111 bp, promoting BrD4 expression. Egr1 knockdown reduced BrD4 expression in HSCs in a mouse model of TAA-induced liver injury and lessened liver fibrosis. Double fluorescence staining demonstrated a strong increase in BrD4 expression in activated HSCs in fibrotic areas of the human livers, paralleling the upregulation of p-Smad3 and Egr1. This research suggested novel molecular events underlying the roles of the master pro-fibrotic cytokine TGFß1 in HSC activation and liver fibrogenesis.

RESUMEN

High cost platinum (Pt) catalysts limit the application of microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) for hydrogen (H2) production. Here, inexpensive and efficient Mo2N nanobelt cathodes were prepared using an ethanol method with minimized catalyst and binder loadings. The chronopotentiometry tests demonstrated that the Mo2N nanobelt cathodes had similar catalytic activities for H2 evolution compared to that of Pt/C (10 wt%). The H2 production rates (0.39 vs. 0.37 m3-H2/m3/d), coulombic efficiencies (90% vs. 77%), and overall hydrogen recovery (74% vs. 70%) of MECs with the Mo2N nanobelt cathodes were also comparable to those with Pt/C cathodes. However, the cost of Mo2N nanobelt catalyst ($ 31/m2) was much less than that of Pt/C catalysts ($ 1930/m2). Furthermore, the biofilm microbiomes at electrodes were studied using the PacBio sequencing of full-length 16S rRNA gene. It indicated Stenotrophomonas nitritireducens as a putative electroactive bacterium dominating the anode biofilm microbiomes. The majority of dominant species in the Mo2N and Pt/C cathode communities belonged to Stenotrophomonas nitritireducens, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, and Comamonas testosterone. The dominant populations in the cathode biofilms were shaped by the cathode materials. This study demonstrated Mo2N nanobelt catalyst as an alternative to Pt catalyst for H2 production in MECs.

RESUMEN

Early warning of soil environmental quality is an important basis for implementing classified and graded soil risk management measures. To quickly understand the regional soil environmental quality and take effective measures in time to prevent continuous soil pollution before deterioration of soil environmental quality, a simple, effective, and quantifiable early warning system for soil environmental quality of agricultural land and development land was respectively established based on environmental capacity and pollutant input-output flux theory. Furthermore, corresponding method and mechanism for early warning were defined based on soil environmental quality standards, food safety standards, and carcinogenic risk coefficients. The agricultural land in Youxian county and the development area within the fifth-ring in Beijing were chosen to assess the soil environmental quality and predict risks of heavy metals exceeding standards in different scenarios. The results show that the soil environmental quality of the agricultural land in Wangling and Taoshui Town both can be classified to the fifth early warning level. Compared with other remediation measures, the Cd contents of soil can be lowered to risk screening levels in the short term by the scenario of "paddy straw not returned to the field". The soil quality in the development area within the fifth-ring in Beijing belongs to the first early warning level under both the "no intervention" and the "decreased input" scenarios, which means that Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn all need more than 50 years to reach their threshold values to pose potential health risks.

RESUMEN

To understand the effect of soil environmental carrying capacity on pollutants and human activities, as well as to effectively prevent the aggravation of soil pollution and control soil environmental risks, a comprehensive indicator system for soil environmental carrying capacity is developed by analyzing the input-output flux and risk characteristics of soil pollutants. Furthermore, an evaluation method for soil environmental carrying capacity is proposed by defining safety coefficients related to evaluation indicators. Based on evaluation of soil environmental quality, the system reflects soil properties, pollution evolution trends, and risk characteristics, focusing on the soil buffering function. Further, a quantitative evaluation is carried out to assess the regional soil environmental carrying capacity of heavy metals on development land in Beijing. The results show that the soil environmental carrying capacity of Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd in Beijing varies widely. The soil environmental carrying capacity of Cd is much lower than that of other elements. Four policy recommendations are proposed as significant for effective soil pollution prevention and control:clarifying concepts for soil environmental carrying capacity, improving the evaluation framework, constructing an information database, and implementing demonstration pilots.

RESUMEN

Capacitive deionization (CDI) has emerged as a promising technique for brackish water desalination. Here, composites of polypyrrole grafted activated carbon (Ppy/AC) were prepared via in situ chemical oxidative polymerization of pyrrole on AC particles. The Ppy/AC cathode was then coupled with a MnO2 anode for desalination in a membrane-free CDI cell. Both the Ppy/AC and MnO2 electrodes exhibited pseudocapacitive behaviors, which can selectively and reversibly intercalate Cl- (Ppy/AC) and Na+ (MnO2) ions. Compared to AC electrodes, the specific capacitances of Ppy/AC electrodes increased concurrently with the pyrrole ratios from 0 to 10%, while the charge transfer and ionic diffusion resistances decreased. As a result, the 10%Ppy/AC-MnO2 cell showed a maximum salt removal capacity of 52.93 mg g-1 (total mass of active materials) and 34.15 mg g-1 (total mass of electrodes), which was higher than those of conventional, membrane, and hybrid CDI cells. More notably, the salt removal rate of the 10%Ppy/AC-MnO2 cell (max 0.46 mg g-1 s-1 to the total mass of active materials and 0.30 mg g-1 s-1 to the total mass of electrodes) was nearly 1 order of magnitude higher than those in most previous CDI studies, and this fast and efficient desalination performance was stabilized over 50 cycles.

RESUMEN

Complete-nitrifying bacteria (comammox) play important roles in nitrogen-overloading aquatic systems. However, the understanding of the environmental relevance is still limited. Here, we studied the responses of comammox bacteria (Nitrospira inopinata) in a tributary of the Yellow River, with the water and sediment, microbial, seasonal, and chemical variations considered. Illumina sequencing indicated that the predominant phyla in the river sediment were Proterobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Chloroflex. Quantitative PCR revealed that N. inopinata-like comammox were approximately twice as abundant in the water during the wet season and in the sediment during the dry season than that of other conditions. Significant correlations were found between the abundance of N. inopinata-like comammox and pH (r = 0.58), temperature (r = 0.63), and dissolved oxygen (r = - 0.77). The abundance of N. inopinata-like comammox was higher than that of ammonia oxidizing archaea (AOA), and lower than that of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB). Furthermore, a significant correlation was discovered between N. inopinata-like comammox and NOB (r = 0.60), and so was anammox bacteria (r = 0.358). Interestingly, N. inopinata-like comammox also showed positive relationships with denitrifying microbes (r = 0.559).

RESUMEN

Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) are capable of simultaneous wastewater treatment and resource recovery at low temperatures. However, the direct enrichment of psychrophilic and electroactive biofilms in BESs at 4°C is difficult due to the lack of understanding in the physioecology of psychrophilic exoelectrogens. Here, we report the start-up and operation of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) at 4°C with pre-acclimated inocula at different temperatures (4°C, 10°C, 25°C, and -20°C) for 7 days and 14 days. MFCs with 7-day-pretreated inocula reached higher peak voltages than did those with 14-day-pretreated inocula. The highest power densities were obtained by MFCs with 25°C - 7-day-, 25°C - 14-day-, and 4°C - 7-day-pretreated inocula (650-700 mW/m2). In contrast, the control MFCs with untreated inocula were stable at 450 mW/m2. The power densities of MFCs with 7-day-pretreated inocula were higher than those obtained by MFCs with 14-day-pretreated inocula. The MFCs with 10°C - 7-day-pretreated inocula and the control MFCs showed higher chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal (90-91%) than other MFCs. Illumina HiSeq sequencing based on 16S rRNA gene amplicons indicated that bacterial communities of the anode biofilms were shaped by pretreated inocula at different temperatures. Compared with the control MFCs with untreated inocula, MFCs with temperature-pretreated inocula demonstrated higher microbial diversity, but did not do so with -20°C-pretreated inocula. Principal components analysis (PCA) revealed an obvious separation between the inocula pretreated at 4°C and those pretreated at 10°C, implying that bacterial community structures could be shaped by pretreated inocula at low temperatures. The pretreatment period also had a diverse impact on the abundance of exoelectrogens and non-exoelectrogens in MFCs with inocula pretreated at different temperatures. The majority of the predominant population was affiliated with Geobacter with a relative abundance of 17-70% at different pre-acclimated temperatures, suggesting that the exoelectrogenic Geobacter could be effectively enriched at 4°C even with inocula pretreated at different temperatures. This study provides a strategy that was previously neglected for fast enrichment of psychrophilic exoelectrogens in BESs at low temperatures.

RESUMEN

Potential threats exist where groundwater is polluted by high concentrations of oil compounds (980.20 mg L-1 the highest TPHs). An abandoned petrochemical plant in Lanzhou City, where long-term petrochemical products leakage contaminated the groundwater, was used as a field site in this study. To determine the extent of pollution and find an effective solution, chemical techniques combined with molecular biological techniques were used to survey the migration and decomposition of pollutants. Moreover, Illumina Sequencing was employed to reveal the microbial changes of different sites. Light-chain alkanes (mostly C6-C9), most benzene compounds, and some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (naphthalene, 2-methylnaphthalene) mainly polluted the source. C29 to C36 and chlorobenzenes (hexachlorocyclohexane) polluted the secondary polluted sites. Moreover, chloralkane (trichloroethane and dichloroethane), benzene derivatives (trimethylbenzene and butylbenzene), and PAHs (fluorene and phenanthrene) were present in the other longtime-contaminated water. The bacterial genera are closely related with the chemical matters, and different groups of microorganisms gather in the sample sites that are polluted with different kinds of oil. The biodiversity and abundance of observed species change with pollution conditions. The dominant phyla (81%) of the bacterial community structure are Proteobacteria (62.2% of the total microbes), Bacteroidetes (8.85%), Actinobacteria (6.70%), and Choloroflexi (3.03%). Pseudomonadaceae is significant in the oil-polluted source and Comamonadaceae is significant in the secondary polluted (migrated oil) sample; these two genera are natural decomposers of refractory matters. Amycolatopsis, Rhodocyclaceae, Sulfurimonas, and Sulfuricurvum are the dominant genera in the long-migrated oil-polluted samples. Bioavailability of the oil-contaminated place differs with levels of pollution and cleaning the worse-polluted sites by microbes is more difficult.

RESUMEN

The connection between microbial community structure and spatial variation and pollution in river waters has been widely investigated. However, water and sediments together have rarely been explored. In this study, Illumina high-throughput sequencing was performed to analyze microbes in 24 water and sediment samples from natural to anthropogenic sources and from headstream to downstream areas. These data were used to assess variability in microbial community structure and diversity along in the Fenghe River, China. The relationship between bacterial diversity and environmental parameters was statistically analyzed. An average of 1682 operational taxonomic units was obtained. Microbial diversity increased from the headstream to downstream and tended to be greater in sediment compared with water. The water samples near the headstream endured relatively low Shannon and Chao1 indices. These diversity indices and the number of observed species in the water and sediment samples increase downstream. The parameters also differ in the two river tributaries. Community structures shift based on the extent of nitrogen pollution variation in the sediment and water samples. The four most dominant genera in the water community were Escherichia, Acinetobacter, Comamonadaceae, and Pseudomonas. In the sediments, the most dominant genera were Stramenopiles, Flavobacterium, Pseudomonas, and Comamonadaceae. The number of ammonia-oxidizing archaea in the headstream water slightly differed from that in the sediment but varied considerably in the downstream sediments. Statistical analysis showed that community variation is correlated with changes in ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, and nitrate nitrogen. This study identified different microbial community structures in river water and sediments. Overall this study emphasized the need to elucidate spatial variations in bacterial diversity in water and sediments associated with physicochemical gradients and to show the effects of such variation on waterborne microbial community structures.

RESUMEN

In view of that the Fenghe River water pollution has become more and more serious, nitrogen and organic matter pollution were put forward as the important study targets. Community structure of the microorganisms could reflect the water pollution condition to a certain degree. By investigating the correlation between the water condition changes and the microbial community variation, it make possible to look upon river pollution from different perspectives. By the use of Illumina high-throughout sequencing, we found that the dominant genera were Acinetobacter, Comamonadaceae, Pseudomonas and Escherichia in Fenghe River aquatic environment. Flavobacterium and Enterobacteriaceae which are known as bacteria closely related to human activities, were found to account for larger percentages in the wet season than in the dry season, thus showing that the river was more influenced by anthropogenic activities in the wet season. The water quality was better in the wet season, while the microbial community structure was more stable and the diversity condition was better in the dry season. From the aspect of chemical pollution and microbe, this research helps to carry out planning for protection of drinking water sources and improvement of water environmental condition.

RESUMEN

Rapid increase of reclaimed water irrigation in urban green areas requires investigating its impact on soil health conditions. In this research, field study was conducted in 7 parks in Beijing with different histories of reclaimed water irrigation. Twenty soil attributes were analyzed to evaluate the effects of reclaimed water irrigation on the soil health conditions. Results showed that soil nutrient conditions were ameliorated by reclaimed water irrigation, as indicated by the increase of soil organic matter content (SOM), total nitrogen (TN), and available phosphorus (AP). No soil salinization but a slight soil alkalization was observed under reclaimed water irrigation. Accumulation of heavy metals in soil was insignificant. It was also observed that reclaimed water irrigation could significantly improve the soil microorganism activities. Overall, the soil health conditions were improved with reclaimed water irrigation, and the improvement increased when the reclaimed water irrigation period became longer.

RESUMEN

Fates and transport of 9 commonly found PPCPs of the reclaimed water were simulated based on the HYDRUS-1D software that was validated with data generated from field experiments. Under the default scenario in which the model parameters and input data represented the typical conditions of turf grass irrigation in southern California, the adsorption, degradation, and volatilization of clofibric acid, ibuprofen, 4-tert-octylphenol, 4-n-nonylphenol, naproxen, triclosan, diclofenac sodium, bisphenol A and estrone in the receiving soils were tracked for 10 years. At the end, their accumulations in the 90 cm soil profile varied from less than 1 ng g(-1) to about 140 ng g(-1) and their concentrations in the drainage water in the 90 cm soil depth varied from nil to µg L(-1) levels. The adsorption and microbial degradation processes interacted to contain the PPCPs entirely within surface 40 cm of the soil profiles. Leaching and volatilization were not significant processes governing the PPCPs in the soils. The extent of accumulations in the soils did not appear to produce undue ecological risks to the soil biota. PPCPs did not represent any potential environmental harm in reclaimed water irrigation.

RESUMEN

Reclaimed water recharge to groundwater is an effective way to relieve water resource crisis. However, reclaimed water contains some pollutants such as nitrate, heavy metals, and new type contaminants, and thus, there exists definite environmental risk in the reclaimed water recharge to groundwater. To promote the development of reclaimed water recharge to groundwater and the safe use of reclaimed water in China, this paper analyzed the relevant literatures and practical experiences around the world, and summarized the effects of different reclaimed water recharge modes on the groundwater quality. Surface recharge makes the salt and nitrate contents in groundwater increased but the risk of heavy metals pollution be smaller, whereas well recharge can induce the arsenic release from sedimentary aquifers, which needs to be paid more attention to. New type contaminants are the hotspots in current researches, and their real risks are unknown. Pathogens have less pollution risks on groundwater, but some virus with strong activity can have the risks. Some suggestions were put forward to reduce the risks associated with the reclaimed water recharge to groundwater in China.

RESUMEN

Safety of agricultural irrigation with reclaimed water is of great concern as some potential hazardous compounds like heavy metals may be accumulated in soils over time. Impacts of long-term reclaimed water on soil Cd pollution were evaluated based on the field investigation in two main crop areas in Beijing with long irrigation history and on simulation results of STEM-profile model. Under long-term reclaimed water, Cd content in the top 20 cm soil layer was greatly elevated and was more than 2 times higher than that in the deep soil layer. There was very small differences between the field measured and model simulated Cd content in the plow layer (top 20 cm) and entire soil layer. Long-term model prediction showed that reclaimed water irrigation had a low environmental risk of soil Cd pollution, but the risk would be aggravated when there were high metal loading from other sources. The risk is also depending on the soil and plant properties.
