RESUMEN

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a disease that quietly yet seriously impacts women's health and represents a global health burden that is often neglected. This study aims to systematically assess the prevalence and dynamics of female UI in China, and can inform further policies and have international implications. This study used three nationwide investigations: A national cross-sectional survey in 2021; another nationwide cross-sectional survey in 2006; and data regarding the institutions and physicians providing pelvic floor rehabilitation services from 2005 to 2019. The weighted prevalence of female UI and its subtypes, including stress UI (SUI), urgency UI (UUI), and mixed UI (MUI), were estimated as primary outcomes. Knowledge, attitude and care-seeking behaviors of UI were evaluated. It was found that the weighted prevalence of female UI was 16.0 % (95% CI, 13.3 %-19.1%) with SUI remaining the predominant subtype (7.0%) in 2021, followed by MUI (6.5%) and UUI (1.9%). The estimated absolute number of Chinese adult women with UI was 85.8 million in 2021. 52.7% (95% CI, 45.9%-59.4 %) of women were aware that UI was a medical condition, and only 10.1% of women with UI sought health care. After 15 years of development, there were 8400 pelvic floor rehabilitation institutions and nearly 10,000 relevant physicians in China-they were found to be associated with UI prevalence. The UI prevalence in China was significantly lower in 2021 compared to that in 2006. Despite the achievement, UI remains a public health problem, especially given China's fast aging and three-child policy. More innovations, especially those that can facilitate care seeking, are needed to address this prevalent yet treatable condition.

This research focused on utilizing banana peel as the primary material for producing mesoporous biomass charcoal through one-step potassium hydroxide activation. Subsequently, the biomass charcoal underwent high-temperature calcination with varying impregnation ratios of KOH : BC for different durations in tubular furnaces set at different temperatures. The resultant biomass charcoal was then subjected to hydrothermal treatment with FeCl3·6H2O to produce biochar/iron oxide composites. The adsorption capabilities of these composites towards methylene blue (MB) were examined under various conditions, including pH (ranging from 3 to 12), temperature variations, and initial MB concentrations (ranging from 50 to 400 mg L-1). The adsorption behavior aligned with the Langmuir model and demonstrated quasi-secondary kinetics. After five adsorption cycles, the capacity decreased from 618.64 mg g-1 to 497.18 mg g-1, indicating considerable stability. Notably, Fe3O4-N-BC exhibited exceptional MB adsorption performance.

Anatase TiO2 has evolved into one of the most attractive materials for gas sensing owing to its strong oxidation activity and excellent sensing properties. In this study, we prepared Pt and bamboo charcoal co-modified nano-TiO2 using a one-pot hydrothermal process and applied it to detect formaldehyde. The successful incorporation of the precious metal Pt and bamboo charcoal onto TiO2 was confirmed by scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Detailed analysis revealed a homogeneous distribution of Pt nanoparticles and bamboo charcoal on the TiO2 surface, which significantly improved the surface area and facilitated gas adsorption. These modifiers significantly enhanced the response of TiO2 to formaldehyde, for instance, the response signal increased fourfold, while the response time decreased from 91 to 68 s. The sample with 0.5@Pt and 0.5@C bamboo charcoal performed the best, showcasing the synergistic effect of metal nanoparticles and carbonaceous materials on gas-sensing properties. Our work highlighted the potential of using biomass-derived carbon to enhance the detection of formaldehyde and demonstrated the importance of material characteristics in designing effective gas sensors.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effectiveness of a new intrauterine degradable polymer film (Womed Leaf) in the management of moderate to severe intrauterine adhesions (IUA). DESIGN: PREG-2 study was a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, controlled, stratified, two-arm superiority clinical trial conducted in 16 centers in seven countries. SETTING: Not applicable. PATIENT(S): Patients ≥18 years scheduled for hysteroscopic adhesiolysis because of symptomatic severe or moderate adhesions (according to American Fertility Society [AFS] IUA score) were considered eligible for the study. INTERVENTION(S): After adhesiolysis, patients were randomized at a 1:1 ratio to either have a Womed Leaf film inserted (intervention group) or not (control group). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): The primary effectiveness endpoint of the study was the change in AFS IUA score on second-look hysteroscopy (SLH), assessed by an independent evaluator, and compared with baseline. Information on the rate of no IUA and responder rate was collected as secondary effectiveness outcomes, while reported adverse events and patient-reported outcomes as safety and tolerability measures. RESULT(S): Between October 26, 2021, and September 28, 2023, a total of 160 women were randomized (Womed Leaf: n = 75 and controls: n = 85). The reduction in IUA AFS score on SLH was significantly higher in the intervention compared with the control group (mean 5.2 ± 2.8 vs. 4.2 ± 3.2). Similarly, the absence of adhesions on SLH was significantly higher in the intervention group (41% vs. 24%; odds ratio, 2.44; confidence interval, 1.161-5.116). None of the reported adverse events were serious or considered related to the device. CONCLUSION(S): Womed Leaf is effective and safe in the management of symptomatic severe or moderate IUAs. INTRODUCTION: Q fever, a zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii (C. burnetii), presents diagnostic challenges due to its clinical and radiological nonspecificity, which often mimics community-acquired pneumonia, coupled with the limitations of traditional diagnostic methods. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) has become an indispensable tool in clinical diagnostics for its high-throughput pathogen identification capabilities. Herein, we detail a case of acute Q fever pneumonia diagnosed with mNGS. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient exhibited symptoms of fever, cough, expectoration, and diarrhea for three days, with the pathogen undetected in initial laboratory assessments. Bronchoscopy and bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) were conducted, leading to the identification of C. burnetii in the lavage fluid via mNGS. Consequently, the patient was promptly initiated on a treatment regimen of 100 mg doxycycline, administered orally every 12 hours. RESULTS: Post-treatment, the patient's temperature normalized, and a full recovery was observed. The follow-up chest CT scan revealed complete resolution of the right lower lobe consolidation. CONCLUSIONS: The clinical presentation of Q fever pneumonia lacks specificity, making diagnosis based solely on symptoms and imaging challenging. mNGS offers a superior alternative for identifying elusive or rarely cultured pathogens.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate the clinical performance of HBRT-H14, a real-time PCR-based assay that separates human papillomavirus (HPV) 16 and HPV18 from 12 other high-risk (HR) HPV types, in population according to Chinese guideline. METHODS: A total of 9829 eligible women aged 21-64 years from Henan, Shanxi, and Guangdong provinces were performed by HBRT-H14 testing and liquid-based cytology (LBC) screening at baseline and followed up for 3-year. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (absolute risk), and negative predictive value of LBC diagnosis and HPV testing were calculated for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or worse (CIN2+) Lesions. RESULTS: At baseline, 80 (0.81%) participants were diagnosed with CIN2+. HR-HPV with reflex LBC had a significantly higher sensitivity (78/80, 97.50% [95% CI, 91.34-99.31%] vs. 62/80, 77.50% [67.21-85.27%], McNemar's test p < 0.001), and a slightly lower specificity (8528/9749, 87.48% [86.80-88.12%] vs. 8900/9749, 91.29% [90.72-91.83%], McNemar's test p < 0.001) than LBC with reflex HR-HPV for CIN2+. 7832 (79.6%) participants completed 3-year follow-up and 172 (2.20%) participants were cumulatively diagnosed with CIN2+. Compared with LBC with reflex HR-HPV, HR-HPV with reflex LBC significantly increased the sensitivity (161/172, 93.60% [88.91-96.39%] vs. 87/172, 50.58% [43.18-57.96%], McNemar's test p < 0.001), but marginally decreased the specificity (6776/7660, 88.46% [87.72-89.16%] vs. 6933/7660, 90.51% [89.83-91.15], McNemar's test p < 0.001). In addition, the absolute 3-year risk of CIN2+ in HPV16/18-positive individuals was as high as 33% (80/238), whereas the risk in the HPV-negative population was only 0.16% (11/6787), much lower than those in the negative for intraepithelial lesion or malignancy population (1.21%, 85/7018). Moreover, similar results were found in women ≥30 years old. DISCUSSION: The study has indicated that HBRT-14 has a reliable clinical performance for use in cervical screening. The validated HPV test would improve the quality of population screening.

Purine nucleoside ester is one of the derivatives of purine nucleoside, which has antiviral and anticancer activities. In this work, a continuous flow synthesis of purine nucleoside esters catalyzed by lipase TL IM from Thermomyces lanuginosus was successfully achieved. Various parameters including solvent, reaction temperature, reaction time/flow rate and substrate ratio were investigated. The best yields were obtained with a continuous flow microreactor for 35 min at 50 °C with the substrate ratio of 1 : 5 (nucleosides to vinyl esters) in the solvent of tert-amyl alcohol. 12 products were efficiently synthesized with yields of 78-93%. Here we reported for the first time the use of lipase TL IM from Thermomyces lanuginosus in the synthesis of purine nucleoside esters. The significant advantages of this methodology are a green solvent and mild conditions, a simple work-up procedure and the highly reusable biocatalyst. This research provides a new technique for rapid synthesis of anticancer and antiviral nucleoside drugs and is helpful for further screening of drug activity.

The aminated sodium lignosulfonate (AELS) was prepared through a Mannich reaction and characterized via FT-IR, TG, SEM and XPS in this study. Subsequently, the adsorption capacity of AELS for methyl blue (MB) was evaluated under various conditions such as pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, initial concentration and temperature. The adsorption kinetics, isotherms and thermodynamics of AELS for methyl blue were investigated and analyzed. The results were found to closely adhere to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, suggesting a single-molecular-layer adsorption process. Notably, the maximum adsorption capacity of AELS for methyl blue (153.42 mg g-1) was achieved under the specified conditions (T = 298 K, MAELS = 0.01 g, pH = 6, VMB = 25 mL, C0 = 300 mg L-1). The adsorption process was determined to be spontaneous and endothermic. Following five adsorption cycles, the adsorption capacity exhibited a minimal reduction from 118.99 mg g-1 to 114.33 mg g-1, indicating good stability. This study contributes to the advancement of utilizing natural resources effectively and sustainably.

RESUMEN

Currently, more than 170 modifications have been identified on RNA. RNA modification mainly regulates RNA splicing, intracellular transport, degradation, translation, and stability. Gynecologic cancer (GC) mainly includes cervical cancer (CCA), ovarian cancer (OC), Endometrial cancer (EMC), among others, is the leading cause of cancer-related death. At present, there is still a lack of effective means to eradicate such diseases, so it is important to conduct more in-depth research on gynecological cancers. Numerous studies have shown that a series of epigenetic changes occur during the development of gynecologic cancer. This article reviews the latest findings on the functional significance of RNA modification in gynecologic cancer and discusses the therapeutic potential of RNA modification-related inhibitors in the treatment of gynecologic cancer.

An increasing number of studies have shown that many nicotinamide derivatives exhibited extensive biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory and antitumor activity. In this paper, a green, concise synthesis of nicotinamide derivatives in sustainable continuous-flow microreactors catalysed by Novozym® 435 from Candida antarctica has been developed. Application of an easily obtainable and reusable lipase in the synthesis of nicotinamide derivatives from methyl nicotinate and amines/benzylamines reacted for 35 min at 50 °C led to high product yields (81.6-88.5%). Environmentally friendly tert-amyl alcohol was applied as a reaction medium. Substantially shorter reaction times as well as a significant increase in the product yield were obtained as compared to the batch process. This innovative approach provides a promising green, efficient and rapid synthesis strategy for pharmaceutical synthesis and further activity research of novel nicotinamide derivatives.
