RESUMEN

The gel properties and molecular conformation of Spanish mackerel myofibrillar protein (MP) induced by soy protein isolate-inulin conjugates (SPI-inulin conjugates) were investigated. The addition of SPI-inulin conjugates significantly enhanced the quality of the protein gel. An analysis of different additives was conducted to assess their impact on the gel strength, texture, water-holding capacity (WHC), water distribution, intermolecular force, dynamic rheology, Raman spectrum, fluorescence spectrum, and microstructure of MP. The results demonstrated a substantial improvement in the strength and water retention of the MP gel with the addition of the conjugate. Compared with the control group (MP), the gel strength increased from 35.18 g·cm to 41.90 g·cm, and WHC increased from 36.80% to 52.67% with the inclusion of SPI-inulin conjugates. The hydrogen bond content was notably higher than that of other groups, and hydrophobic interaction increased from 29.30% to 36.85% with the addition of SPI-inulin conjugates. Furthermore, the addition of the conjugate altered the secondary structure of the myofibrillar gel, with a decrease in α-helix content from 62.91% to 48.42% and an increase in ß-sheet content from 13.40% to 24.65%. Additionally, the SPI-inulin conjugates led to a significant reduction in the endogenous fluorescence intensity of MP. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) results revealed a substantial increase in the Rq value from 8.21 nm to 20.21 nm. Adding SPI and inulin in the form of conjugates is an effective method to improve the gel properties of proteins, which provides important guidance for the study of adding conjugates to surimi products. It has potential application prospects in commercial surimi products.

The Multidrug and Toxic Compound Extrusion (MATE) proteins serve as pivotal transporters responsible for the extrusion of metabolites, thereby playing a significant role in both plant development and the detoxification of toxins. The MATE gene family within the Brachypodium distachyon, which is an important model organism of the Poaceae family, remains largely unexplored. Here, a comprehensive identification and analysis of MATE genes that complement B. distachyon were conducted. The BdMATE genes were systematically categorized into five distinct groups, predicated on an assessment of their phylogenetic affinities and protein structure. Furthermore, our investigation revealed that dispersed duplication has significantly contributed to the expansion of the BdMATE genes, with tandem and segmental duplications showing important roles, suggesting that the MATE genes in Poaceae species have embarked on divergent evolutionary trajectories. Examination of ω values demonstrated that BdMATE genes underwent purifying selection throughout the evolutionary process. Furthermore, collinearity analysis has confirmed a high conservation of MATE genes between B. distachyon and rice. The cis-regulatory elements analysis within BdMATEs promoters, coupled with expression patterns, suggests that BdMATEs play important roles during plant development and in response to phytohormones. Collectively, the findings presented establish a foundational basis for the subsequent detailed characterization of the MATE gene family members in B. distachyon.

A 32-year-old male presented with a painless swelling on his nasal dorsum, persisting for over 3 months. He reported a gradual increase in the size of the mass, with no identifiable triggers except occasional skin redness. He denied nosebleeds, rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction, trauma, prior surgery, or spontaneous pain. His medical history revealed gout, managed with colchicine and diclofenac. Despite dietary and pharmaceutical interventions, he continued to have bouts of hyperuricemia, with blood uric acid levels measuring 739 µmol/L. Multiple tophi were evident, especially on the left first metatarsophalangeal joint (Figure 1A). Examination revealed an irregularly shaped, immobile, hard swelling at the nasal radix, measuring 3 cm×2 cm. Computerized tomography (CT) imaging of the nose showed bilateral nasal bone destruction from the lesion. Given its impact on the patient's appearance and his history of gout, the mass was initially diagnosed as unusual gouty tophus. The patient requested surgical removal of the lesion, and the dissection revealed a mass partly encased by a capsule-like connective tissue adherent to the nasal bone. As the lesion damaged the nasal bone, removal of the lesion led to defect of nasal bone. After an extensive rinse of the surgery site, the incision was sutured.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the utilization of autogenous vascularized iliac crest flap for repairing jaw defects has seen a significant rise. However, the visual monitoring of iliac bone flaps present challenges, frequently leading to delayed detection of flap loss. Consequently, there's a urgent need to develop effective indicators for monitoring postoperative complications in iliac crest flaps. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 160 patients who underwent vascularized iliac crest flap transplantation for jawbone reconstruction from January 2020 to December 2022. We investigated the changes in D-dimer levels among patients with or without postoperative complications. Additionally, multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to explore potential individual risk factors, including surgical duration, age, pathology type, absolute and relative D-dimer levels, and gender, culminating in the development of a nomogram. RESULTS: On the first day following surgery, patients who experienced thrombosis exhibited a substantial increase in plasma D-dimer levels, reaching 3.75 mg/L, 13.84 times higher than the baseline. This difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05) compared to patients without postoperative complications. Furthermore, the nomogram we have developed and validated effectively predicts venous thrombosis, assigning individual risk scores to patients. This predictive tool was assessed in both training and validation cohorts, achieving areas under the curve (AUC) of 0.630 and 0.600, with the 95% confidence intervals of 0.452-0.807 and 0.243-0.957, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Our study illustrates that postoperative plasma D-dimer levels can serve as a sensitive biomarker for monitoring thrombosis-induced flap loss. Moreover, we have developed a novel prediction model that integrates multiple factors, thereby enhancing the accuracy of early identification of patients at risk of thrombosis-associated flap loss. This advancement contributes to improving the overall management and outcomes of such procedures.

BACKGROUND: An urgent need exists for innovative surgical video recording techniques in head and neck reconstructive surgeries, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where a surge in surgical procedures necessitates more skilled surgeons. This demand, significantly intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic, highlights the critical role of surgical videos in medical education. We aimed to identify a straightforward, high-quality approach to recording surgical videos at a low economic cost in the operating room, thereby contributing to enhanced patient care. METHODS: The recording was comprised of six head and neck flap harvesting surgeries using GoPro or two types of digital cameras. Data were extracted from the recorded videos and their subsequent editing process. Some of the participants were subsequently interviewed. RESULTS: Both cameras, set at 4 K resolution and 30 frames per second (fps), produced satisfactory results. The GoPro, worn on the surgeon's head, moves in sync with the surgeon, offering a unique first-person perspective of the operation without needing an additional assistant. Though cost-effective and efficient, it lacks a zoom feature essential for close-up views. In contrast, while requiring occasional repositioning, the digital camera captures finer anatomical details due to its superior image quality and zoom capabilities. CONCLUSION: Merging these two systems could significantly advance the field of surgical video recording. This innovation holds promise for enhancing technical communication and bolstering video-based medical education, potentially addressing the global shortage of specialized surgeons.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the characteristics and treatment modalities of malignant tumors originating from the sublingual gland, as well as evaluate the therapeutic outcomes following free flap reconstruction. METHODS: A retrospective statistical analysis was conducted on the clinical data of nine patients diagnosed with malignant neoplasms tumor of the sublingual gland. RESULTS: Nine case of malignant tumors originated from the sublingual glandular tissue, encompassing eight adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) and a single case of bipartite differentiated carcinoma-a hybrid of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma. Among the nine patients, four anterolateral thigh flaps were used (three of which were thin flaps), and five forearm flaps were also empoyed. The size of flaps varied, with the lengths ranging from 4 cm to 9 cm, and the widths ranging from 2.5 cm to 6 cm. The vessels chosen for anastomosis were the superior thyroid artery in seven cases, the facial artery in one case, and the lingual artery in one case. Among the eight patients who underwent dissection of cervical lymph nodes, metastasis were found in one case. Two patients underwent adjuvant radiotherapy. Upon postoperative follow-up, there was no recurrence in any of the nine patients . CONCLUSION: The anterolateral thigh perforator flap thinning technique can be employed for postoperative reconstruction of malignant sublingual gland tumors.

OBJECTIVES: Preoperative diagnosis of oral ameloblastoma (AME) and odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) has been a challenge in dentistry. This study uses radiomics approaches and machine learning (ML) algorithms to characterize cone-beam CT (CBCT) image features for the preoperative differential diagnosis of AME and OKC and compares ML algorithms to expert radiologists to validate performance. METHODS: We retrospectively collected the data of 326 patients with AME and OKC, where all diagnoses were confirmed by histopathologic tests. A total of 348 features were selected to train six ML models for differential diagnosis by a 5-fold cross-validation. We then compared the performance of ML-based diagnoses to those of radiologists. RESULTS: Among the six ML models, XGBoost was effective in distinguishing AME and OKC in CBCT images, with its classification performance outperforming the other models. The mean precision, recall, accuracy, F1-score, and area under the curve (AUC) were 0.900, 0.807, 0.843, 0.841, and 0.872, respectively. Compared to the diagnostics by radiologists, ML-based radiomic diagnostics performed better. CONCLUSIONS: Radiomic-based ML algorithms allow CBCT images of AME and OKC to be distinguished accurately, facilitating the preoperative differential diagnosis of AME and OKC. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: ML and radiomic approaches with high-resolution CBCT images provide new insights into the differential diagnosis of AME and OKC.

An estimated 258 million tons of plastic enter the soil annually. Joining persistent types of microplastic (MP), there will be an increasing demand for biodegradable plastics. There are still many unknowns about plastic pollution by either type, and one large gap is the fate and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from MPs as well as how they interact with soil microbiomes in agricultural systems. In this study, polyethylene MPs, photoaged to different degrees, and virgin polylactic acid MPs were added to agricultural soil at different levels and incubated for 100 days to address this knowledge gap. We find that, upon MP addition, labile components of low aromaticity were degraded and transformed, resulting in increased aromaticity and oxidation degree, reduced molecular diversity, and changed nitrogen and sulfur contents of soil DOM. Terephthalate, acetate, oxalate, and L-lactate in DOM released by polylactic acid MPs and 4-nitrophenol, propanoate, and nitrate in DOM released by polyethylene MPs were the major molecules available to the soil microbiomes. The bacteria involved in the metabolism of DOM released by MPs are mainly concentrated in Proteobacteria, Actinobacteriota, and Bacteroidota, and fungi are mainly in Ascomycota and Basidiomycota. Our study provides an in-depth understanding of the microbial transformation of DOM released by MPs and its effects of DOM evolution in agricultural soils.

Humin (HM), as the main component of soil organic matter, carries various reactive groups and plays a crucial regulatory role in the transformation of arsenic (As). However, current research on the redox pathway of As and its interactions with HM is relatively limited. This study aimed to explore the impact of different HM samples on the redox characteristics of As. The results showed that HM can not only adsorb arsenite [As(III)] but also oxidize As(III) into arsenate [As(V)]. However, once As(III) is adsorbed on the HM, it cannot undergo further oxidation. HMNM (extracted from peat soil) exhibited the highest adsorption capacity of As(III), with a maximum amount of 1.95 mg/kg. The functional groups of HM involved in As complexation were primarily phenolic hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. The adsorption capacity of HM samples for As(III) was consistent with their carboxyl group contents. The oxygen-containing functional groups and environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) on HM can directly oxidize As(Ⅲ) through electron transfer, or indirectly induce the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), such as hydroxyl radicals, to further oxidize As(Ⅲ). This study provides new insight into the transport and transformation process of As mediated by soil HM, and establishes a theoretical basis for As remediation.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to discuss the characteristics and treatment methods of malignant tumors in the parotid region, as well as the therapeutic effects of immediate free flap reconstruction of soft tissue for postoperative defects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 11 cases of soft tissue flap reconstruction for postoperative defects following the resection of malignant tumors in the parotid region. Statistical analysis was performed based on clinical data. RESULTS: Among the 11 cases of malignant tumors in the parotid region, there were 2 cases of secretory carcinoma (SC) of the salivary gland, 2 cases of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), 2 cases of carcinosarcoma, 1 case of mucoepidermoid carcinoma (MEC), 1 case of epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC), 1 case of salivary duct carcinoma (SDC), 1 case of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), and 1 case of osteosarcoma. Among these cases, 4 were initial diagnoses and 7 were recurrent tumors. The defect repairs involved: 8 cases with anterolateral thigh free flap (ALTF), 2 cases with pectoralis major muscle flaps, and 1 case with forearm flap. The size of the flaps ranged from approximately 1 cm × 3 cm to 7 cm × 15 cm. The recipient vessels included: 4 cases with the facial artery, 4 cases with the superior thyroid artery, and 1 case with the external carotid artery. The ratio of recipient vein anastomosis was: 57% for branches of the internal jugular vein, 29% for the facial vein, and 14% for the external jugular vein. Among the 8 cases that underwent neck lymph node dissection, one case showed lymph node metastasis on pathological examination. In the initial diagnosis cases, 2 cases received postoperative radiotherapy, and 1 case received 125I seed implantation therapeutic treatment after experiencing two recurrences. Postoperative follow-up revealed that 2 cases underwent reoperation due to local tumor recurrence, and there were 2 cases lost to follow-up. The survival outcomes after treatment included: one case of distant metastasis and one case of death from non-cancerous diseases. CONCLUSION: Immediate soft tissue flap reconstruction is an important and valuable option to address postoperative defects in patients afflicted with malignant tumors in the parotid region.

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is a type of marginal zone B-cell lymphoma that occurs outside the lymph nodes in mucosal tissue. It accounts for 6-8 % of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. MALT lymphoma of the salivary gland is a rare disease, with primary tumors in the salivary gland accounting for 2-5 % of salivary gland tumors. The most common site is the parotid gland (80 %), followed by the submandibular gland (14 %), minor salivary glands, and sublingual gland (5 %). Patients with salivary gland MALT lymphoma often have autoimmune diseases such as Sjogren's syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis. Primary malignant tumors of the sublingual gland account for less than 1 % of cases, and preoperative diagnosis is difficult, often requiring biopsy for confirmation. To our knowledge, there are no reports of MALT lymphoma arising from the sublingual gland. We report a case of MALT lymphoma originating from the sublingual gland in a patient with a history of hypertension, diabetes, cerebral infarction, and non-traumatic numbness of the right lower limb.

Microplastics (MPs) exists widely in the environment, and the resulting pollution of MPs has become a global environmental problem. Plants can absorb MPs through their roots. However, studies on the mechanism of the effect of root exposure to different size MPs on vegetables are limited. Here, we use Polystyrene (PS) MPs with different particle sizes to investigate the internalization, physiological response and molecular mechanism of lettuce to MPs. MPs may accumulate in large amounts in lettuce roots and migrate to the aboveground part through the vascular bundle, while small particle size MPs (SMPs, 100 nm) have stronger translocation ability than large particle size MPs (LMPs, 500 nm). MPs can cause physiological and biochemical responses and transcriptome changes in lettuce. SMPs and LMPs resulted in reduced biomass (38.27 % and 48.22 % reduction in fresh weight); caused oxidative stress (59.33 % and 47.74 % upregulation of SOD activity in roots) and differential gene expression (605 and 907 DEGs). Signal transduction, membrane transport and alteration of synthetic and metabolic pathways may be the main causes of physiological toxicity of lettuce. Our study provides important information for understanding the behavior and fate of MPs in edible vegetables, especially the physiological toxicity of MPs to edible vegetables, in order to assess the potential threat of MPs to food safety and agricultural sustainable development.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a heterogeneous malignancy originating from the oral mucosal epithelium. Detecting novel biomarkers can offer crucial information on disease aggressiveness and expected clinical outcomes for individual patients. SEC61G, an aberrantly expressed gene in various cancers, has been associated with negative clinical outcomes. However, its expression and clinical significance in OSCC is still unclear. In the present study, we investigated the SEC61G expression level in OSCC using bioinformatic and immunohistochemical analyses. Additionally, our findings revealed a significant correlation between SEC61G expression and clinicopathological characteristics, as well as a worse prognosis in OSCC patients. Notably, flow cytometry analysis on patient samples revealed that SEC61G expression was also linked to decreased immune infiltration in OSCC patients. In conclusion, our study provides evidence supporting SEC61G's role as a potential diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic marker in OSCC.

Red blood cell-derived extracellular vesicles (RBC EVs) are small, spherical fragments released from red blood cells. These vesicles, similar to EVs derived from other cell types, are crucial for intercellular communication processes and have been implicated in various physiological and pathological processes. The diagnostic and therapeutic potential of RBC EVs has garnered increasing attention in recent years, revealing their valuable role in the field of medicine. In this review, we aim to provide a comprehensive analysis of the current research status of RBC EVs. We summarize existing studies and highlight the progress made in understanding the characteristics and functions of RBC EVs, with a particular focus on their biological roles in different diseases. We also discuss their potential utility as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers in diseases and as vectors for drug delivery. Furthermore, we emphasize the need for further research to achieve selective purification of RBC EVs and unravel their heterogeneity, which will allow for a deeper understanding of their diverse functions and exploration of their potential applications in diagnostics and therapeutics.

The Membrane Attack Complex and Perforin (MACPF) proteins play a crucial role in plant development and adaptation to environmental stresses. Heretofore, few MACPF genes have been functionally identified, leaving gaps in our understanding of MACPF genes in other plants, particularly in the Solanaceae family, which includes economically and culturally significant species, such as tomato, potato, and pepper. In this study, we have identified 26 MACPF genes in three Solanaceae species and in the water lily, which serves as the base group for angiosperms. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that angiosperm MACPF genes could be categorized into three distinct groups, with another moss and spikemoss lineage-specific group, which is further supported by the examination of gene structures and domain or motif organizations. Through inter-genome collinearity analysis, it is determined that there are 12 orthologous SolMACPF gene pairs. The expansion of SolMACPF genes is primarily attributed to dispersed duplications, with purifying selection identified as the principal driving force in their evolutionary process, as indicated by the ω values. Furthermore, the analysis of expression patterns revealed that Solanaceae genes are preferentially expressed in reproductive tissues and regulated by various environmental stimuli, particularly induced by submergence. Taken together, these findings offer valuable insights into and a fresh perspective on the evolution and function of SolMACPF genes, thereby establishing a foundation for further investigations into their phenotypic and functional characteristics.

BACKGROUND: Tumor-associated macrophages, as the major immunocytes in solid tumors, show divided loyalty and remarkable plasticity in tumorigenesis. Once the M2-to-M1 repolarization is achieved, they could be switched from the supporters for tumor development into the guardians for host immunity. Meanwhile, Lipid metabolic reprogramming is demonstrated to be one of the most important hallmarks of tumor-associated macrophages, which plays a decisive role in regulating their phenotypes and functions to promote tumorigenesis and immunotherapy resistance. Therefore, targeting the lipid metabolism of TAMs may provide a new direction for anti-tumor strategies. CONCLUSION: In this review, we first summarized the origins, classifications and general lipid metabolic process of TAMs. Then we discussed the currently available drugs and interventions that target lipid metabolic disorders of TAMs, including those targeting lipid uptake, efflux, lipolysis, FAO and lipid peroxidation. Besides, based on the recent research status, we summarized the present challenges for this cancer immunotherapy, including the precise drug delivery system, the lipid metabolic heterogeneity, and the intricate lipid metabolic interactions in the TME, and we also proposed corresponding possible solutions. Collectively, we hope this review will give researchers a better understanding of the lipid metabolism of TAMs and lead to the development of corresponding anti-tumor therapies in the future.

Whether thrombocytopenia substantively increases the risk of hemorrhage associated with anticoagulation in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) is not established. The purpose of this study was to compare rates of bleeding in patients with AF and thrombocytopenia (platelet count < 100 000/µL) to patients with AF and normal platelet counts (>150 000/µL). We performed a propensity score-matched, retrospective cohort study of adults (n = 1070) with a new diagnosis of AF who received a prescription for an oral anticoagulant between 2015 and 2020. The thrombocytopenia cohort was defined as having at least 2 platelet counts <100 000/µL on separate days in the period spanning the 12 weeks preceding the initiation of anticoagulation to 6 weeks after the initiation of anticoagulation. The primary end point was the 1-year cumulative incidence of major bleeding; secondary end points included clinically relevant bleeding, arterial and venous thrombotic events, and all-cause mortality. Patients with AF and thrombocytopenia experienced a higher 1-year cumulative incidence of major bleeding (13.3% vs 5.7%; P < .0001) and clinically relevant bleeding (24.5% vs 16.7%; P = .005) than the controls. Thrombocytopenia was identified as an independent risk factor for major bleeding (hazard ratio, 2.20; confidence interval, 1.36-3.58; P = .001), with increasing risk based on the severity of thrombocytopenia. The cumulative incidence of arterial thrombosis at 1 year was 3.6% in the group with thrombocytopenia and 1.5% in controls (Gray test, P = .08). These findings suggest that baseline platelet counts are an important biomarker for hemorrhagic outcomes in AF and that the degree of thrombocytopenia is an important factor in determining the level of risk.

Integrin ß4 (ITGB4) is a member of the integrin family, which plays a crucial role in mediating cell adhesion to the extracellular matrix. Recent studies have demonstrated that ITGB4 is involved in tumorigenesis and metastasis during the development of cancer. However, the role of ITGB4 in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains unclear. A Multiplex immunohistochemistry (OPAL™, mIHC) assay was employed to stain ITGB4, ALDH1, PD-L1, cytokeratin (CK), CD8 and PD-1 in a human OSCC tissue microarray, containing 26 normal oral epithelium samples, 21 oral epithelium dysplasia samples and 76 OSCC samples. The expression pattern and clinicopathological characteristics of ITGB4 were analyzed and compared with those of PD-1, PD-L1, ALDH1 and CD8. The correlation between subgroups of tumor cells, including ITGB4+PD-L1+ and ITGB4+ALDH1+, and subgroups of T cells, including CD8+ and CD8+PD-1+, was evaluated using two-tailed Pearson's statistics. A Kaplan-Meier curve was built, and a log-rank test was performed to analyze the survival rate of different subgroups. The mIHC staining results show that ITGB4 was mostly expressed in the tumor cells, with a significant increase in the OSCC specimens compared with normal oral epithelium and oral epithelium dysplasia. The paired analysis, conducted between the OSCC tumor tissue and normal paracancer mucosa, confirmed the results. The study further revealed that ITGB4+PD-L1+ cancer cells, but not ITGB4+ALDH1+ cancer cells, were significantly associated with the infiltration of CD8+ T cells (positivity p = 0.005, positive number p = 0.03). Additionally, ITGB4+PD-L1+ tumor cells were positively correlated with CD8+PD-1+ T cells (positivity p = 0.02, positive number p = 0.03). Most intriguingly, the subgroup of ITGB4/PD-L1high with CD8/PD-1high displayed the best prognosis compared with the other considered subgroups. The results show that the expression of ITGB4 was increased in OSCC compared with normal oral mucosa. Furthermore, a specific subgroup with high levels of expression of ITGB4/PD-L1 and CD8/PD-1 was found to have a relatively better prognosis compared with the other subgroups. Ultimately, this study sheds light on the potential role of ITGB4 in OSCC and provides a basis for further investigation.

Meprin and TRAF homology (MATH)-domain-containing proteins are pivotal in modulating plant development and environmental stress responses. To date, members of the MATH gene family have been identified only in a few plant species, including Arabidopsis thaliana, Brassica rapa, maize, and rice, and the functions of this gene family in other economically important crops, especially the Solanaceae family, remain unclear. The present study identified and analyzed 58 MATH genes from three Solanaceae species, including tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), potato (Solanum tuberosum), and pepper (Capsicum annuum). Phylogenetic analysis and domain organization classified these MATH genes into four groups, consistent with those based on motif organization and gene structure. Synteny analysis found that segmental and tandem duplication might have contributed to MATH gene expansion in the tomato and the potato, respectively. Collinearity analysis revealed high conservation among Solanaceae MATH genes. Further cis-regulatory element prediction and gene expression analysis showed that Solanaceae MATH genes play essential roles during development and stress response. These findings provide a theoretical basis for other functional studies on Solanaceae MATH genes.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) is a frequent and severe consequence of primary brain tumors. The safety of antiplatelet medications in this patient population is undefined. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective was to determine whether antiplatelet medications are associated with an increased risk of ICH in patients with primary brain tumors. PATIENTS/METHODS: We performed a matched, retrospective cohort study of patients with the diagnosis of primary brain tumor treated at our institution between 2010 and 2021. Radiographic images of all potential ICH events underwent blinded review. The primary end point of the study was the cumulative incidence of ICH at 1 year after tumor diagnosis. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: A total of 387 patients with primary brain tumors were included in the study population (130 exposed to antiplatelet agents, 257 not exposed). The most common malignancy was glioblastoma (n = 256, 66.1%). Among the intervention cohort, 119 patients received aspirin monotherapy. The cumulative incidence of any ICH at 1 year was 11.0% (95% CI, 5.3-16.6) in those receiving antiplatelet medications and 13.0% (95% CI, 8.5-17.6) in those not receiving antiplatelet medications (Gray test, p = 0.6). The cumulative incidence of major ICH was similar between the cohorts (3.3% in antiplatelet cohort vs 2.9% in control cohort, p = 1.0). This study did not identify an increased incidence of ICH in patients with primary brain tumors exposed to antiplatelet medications.
