Background: Since November 2014, the pentavalent (Diptheria+Tetanus+Pertussis and Hepatitis B and Hib or DTP-HBHib) vaccine has been integrated into the Iranian national vaccination programme. Aims: We conducted a prospective study in Zahedan in the southeast of the Islamic Republic of Iran to determine the incidence of adverse events following immunization (AEFI) with the pentavalent vaccine in children aged under one year. Methods: Using cluster sampling, 1119 children aged 2–10 months at 15 public health clinics were invited, through their parents, to participate in the study. The parents were trained to register and report any AEFIs in a questionnaire. They were instructed to return the child to the clinic for further examination by a physician if they observed any complications within 3 days of vaccination. Results: The most commonly reported AEFIs were fever (50.94%), mild (41.46%) and severe (1.70%) injection site complications, persistent crying for 3 hours or more (1.88%), hypotonic hyporesponsive episode (0.36%), vomiting (1.88%), diarrhoea (2.95%), and sterile abscess (0.62%). There were no cases of convulsion, purulent abscess or rash. The work experience of vaccinators (OR = 1.85; 95% CI: 1.4–2.46) showed a significant statistical association with the incidence of mild local complications at the injection site. Those with a history of Bacillus Calmette–Guérin (BCG) lymphadenitis (OR = 3.89; 95% CI:1.04–14.49) had a higher risk of severe local complications at the injection site. Conclusions: The observed incidence of serious AEFIs following pentavalent vaccine injection in the study population was within the expected range. However, some of the relationships observed in this study require further research.

AIMS: This study intended to investigate whether exposure to the combination of noise and Ag-NPs in rats induces cochlear damage and hearing dysfunction. MAIN METHODS: A total of 24Wistar rats were divided into four treatment groups and received/exposed to saline (IP), Ag-NPs (100 mg/kg, 5d/w for 4 weeks), 8 kHz narrowband noise (104 dB SPL, 6 h/day, 5d/w for 4 weeks) and Ag-NPs plus noise. The DPOAE, serum levels of MDA and SOD and changes in body weight were assessed. The rat cochlea was further stained for investigating the mRNA expression (TL-6, NOX3, and TNF-), IHC (TUJ-1 and MHC7), and histological alterations. The Ag-NPs characteristics were also analysed by SEM and XRD. KEY FINDINGS: DPOAE values were remarkably reduced (p < 0.05) among the exposed groups. Furthermore, exposure to noise and Ag-NPs significantly increased MDA levels and decreased the SOD activity in the serum. In comparison to the control group, the expression of IL-6, TNF-, and NOX3 was shown to be elevated in the Ag-NPs plus noise group. The body weight also increased significantly in all groups with the exception of the Ag-NPs plus noise group. IHC tests showed remarkable down-regulation of TUJ1 and MYO7A. Morphological changes confirmed our findings as well. SEM and XRD data validated the production of Ag-NPs. SIGNIFICANCE: According to the findings of this study, sub-acute exposure to noise and Ag-NPs causes permanent damage to the hair cells that are in charge of high-frequency perception.

Background: Although vaccination coverage against a disease is not exactly the same as community immunity against that disease, it is undoubtedly directly related to it and provides an estimate of the coherence and efficacy of community health infrastructure. Aims: To evaluate the vaccination coverage of children throughout the Islamic Republic of Iran in 2019. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. A probability proportional to size cluster sampling method was used and the vaccination data of 8682 children aged 24–35 months were collected in the form of 1447 clusters, each comprising six participants. Only valid data, including vaccination card or electronic health files, were used. The results were reported in the form of descriptive tables. Results: Overall, 97.82% of Iranian participants (8068 of 8248) and 90.32% of non-Iranian participants (392 of 434) had received all essential childhood vaccination by the time of interview. In total, 93.02% of all participants had presentable vaccination cards, and the immunization history of 535 (6.16%) children was retrieved using their electronic health files. The dropout rate between receiving pentavalent vaccine 1 and pentavalent vaccine 3 was 0.01%. In 29 provinces, vaccination coverage was ≥ 95%. In the other two provinces, the figure was 93.30%.Conclusion: Immunization coverage of children aged 24–35 months fully complied with eradication/elimination goals of vaccine-preventable diseases. In 2019, measles and rubella elimination was certified in the Islamic Republic of Iran. However, non-Iranian residents with immunization coverage < 95% constitute a high-risk group for possible outbreaks.

Objectives. This study aims to investigate whether mento-physical exercises can decrease mental fatigue during shift work. Methods. Research subjects including the control room staff of an urban train system were chosen randomly, for whom mental fatigue was assessed before and after rest breaks for control and experimental groups. A new protocol was applied in the experimental group, including breathing exercises, isometric and isotonic exercises, and progressive relaxation during the inter-shift break. A designed questionnaire and the Stroop test were used to evaluate fatigue and the reaction time, respectively. Results. Pre and post-test results showed that mental, visual and physical fatigue and reaction time decreased by 14.48, 49.22, 26.85 and 8.35% in the control group and 36.42, 48.48, 76.37 and 20.56% in the experimental group, respectively. Conclusions. At the 5% α level, Student's t test showed that mento-physical exercises effectively decreased mental and physical fatigue as well as reaction time in the experimental group compared to the control group.

Synthesis and processing of two- or three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been limited by solvent intractability and sluggish condensation kinetics. Here, we report on the electrochemical deposition of poly(5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-aminophenyl)porphyrin)-covalent organic frameworks (POR-COFs) via formation of phenazine linkages. By adjusting the synthetic parameters, we demonstrate the rapid and bottom-up synthesis of COF dendrites. Both experiment and density functional theory underline the prominent role of pyridine, not only as a polymerization promoter but as a stabilizing sublattice, cocrystallizing with the framework. The crucial role of pyridine in dictating the structural properties of such a cocrystal (Py-POR-COF) is discussed. Also, a structure-to-function relationship for this class of materials, governing their electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline media, is reported.

Background: This study was carried out on Iranian female adolescents to understandhealth needs for the purpose of designing health promoting intervention in schools.Methods: In this exploratory qualitative study, two focus group discussion (15 teachers)and 30 individual in-depth interviews were conducted among female adolescents in the eighthgrade in Zahedan, Iran. Qualitative content analysis was used for data evaluation.Results: The views of students and teachers demonstrated nine of needs including:informing students about the schools’ health project aims, education and training all dimensionsof health with an emphasis on mental health, use of experts in various fields for education fromother organisations, employing capable and trusted counselors in schools, utilisation of a varietyof teaching methods, activating reward systems for encouraging students’ participation in groupactivities, teaching communication and the ability to establish good relationships with parents andstrategies for resolving family conflict, teaching parents and students high-risk behaviours andstrategies for handling them as well as reforming wrong attitudes and indigenous sub-culture.Conclusion: This study found the different needs of Iranian female students comparedto other cultures about a health promoting school programme. Therefore, their contribution canprovide an insight for formulating policies and intervention in schools.
