RESUMEN

Nitrite is a common ingredient in the industry and agriculture; it is everywhere, like water, food, and surroundings. Recently, several approaches have been developed to measure the nitrite levels. So, this review was presented as a summary of many approaches utilized to detect the nitrite. Furthermore, the types of information that may be acquired using these methodologies, including optic and electrical signals, were discussed. In electrical signal methods, electrochemical sensors are usually developed using different materials, including carbon, polymers, oxides, and hydroxides. At the same time, optic signals receiving techniques involve utilizing fluorescence chromatography, absorption, and spectrometry instruments. Furthermore, these methodologies' benefits, drawbacks, and restrictions are examined. Lastly, due to the efficiency and fast means of electrochemical detectors, it was suggested that they can be used for detecting nitrite in food safety. Futuristic advancements in the techniques used for nitrite determination are subsequently outlined.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To comprehensively assess the quality of life (QoL) of Egyptian university students. DESIGN: Cross-sectional online study. SETTING: Online settings of university students from August to October 2023. SUBJECTS: University students aged 18-25 from various institutions in Egypt. MEASURES: Physical, psychological, social, and environmental domains of the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) scale. Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 27.0. Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to detect significant associations while Spearman correlation was used for correlation analysis. RESULTS: A total of 1930 Egyptian university students were included. Students showed outperformance in the psychological health and social relationships domains, with medians of 58 ± 20.8 and 58 ± 25, respectively, compared to physical health with a median of 46 ± 17.8 and environmental health with a median score of 16.6 ± 21.9. Non-medical students reported higher QoL scores, particularly in physical, psychological, and social domains, compared to their medical counterparts (P-values <0.001, 0.007, and 0.002, respectively). No significant differences were observed between genders in any of the domains. Academic performance satisfaction significantly correlated with higher QoL scores across all domains (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This multi-center study sheds light on diverse aspects influencing QoL of Egyptian university students. The findings underscore the importance of addressing academic stressors, promoting health behaviors, and tailoring interventions based on students' academic backgrounds with larger and more representative samples.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a multifactorial disorder involving genetic and environmental factors leading to pathophysiologic symptoms and comorbidities including neurodevelopmental disorders, anxiety, immune dysregulation, and gastrointestinal (GI) abnormalities. Abnormal intestinal permeability has been reported among ASD patients and it is well established that disturbances in eating patterns may cause gut microbiome imbalance (i.e., dysbiosis). Therefore, studies focusing on the potential relationship between gut microbiota and ASD are emerging. We compared the intestinal bacteriome and mycobiome of a cohort of ASD subjects with their non-ASD siblings. Differences between ASD and non-ASD subjects include a significant decrease at the phylum level in Cyanobacteria (0.015% vs. 0.074%, p < 0.0003), and a significant decrease at the genus level in Bacteroides (28.3% vs. 36.8%, p < 0.03). Species-level analysis showed a significant decrease in Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, Prevotella copri, Bacteroides fragilis, and Akkermansia municiphila. Mycobiome analysis showed an increase in the fungal Ascomycota phylum (98.3% vs. 94%, p < 0.047) and an increase in Candida albicans (27.1% vs. 13.2%, p < 0.055). Multivariate analysis showed that organisms from the genus Delftia were predictive of an increased odds ratio of ASD, whereas decreases at the phylum level in Cyanobacteria and at the genus level in Azospirillum were associated with an increased odds ratio of ASD. We screened 24 probiotic organisms to identify strains that could alter the growth patterns of organisms identified as elevated within ASD subject samples. In a preliminary in vivo preclinical test, we challenged wild-type Balb/c mice with Delftia acidovorans (increased in ASD subjects) by oral gavage and compared changes in behavioral patterns to sham-treated controls. An in vitro biofilm assay was used to determine the ability of potentially beneficial microorganisms to alter the biofilm-forming patterns of Delftia acidovorans, as well as their ability to break down fiber. Downregulation of cyanobacteria (generally beneficial for inflammation and wound healing) combined with an increase in biofilm-forming species such as D. acidovorans suggests that ASD-related GI symptoms may result from decreases in beneficial organisms with a concomitant increase in potential pathogens, and that beneficial probiotics can be identified that counteract these changes.

Femtosecond laser pulses enable the synthesis of light across the electromagnetic spectrum and provide access to ultrafast phenomena in physics, biology, and chemistry. Chip-integration of femtosecond technology could revolutionize applications such as point-of-care diagnostics, bio-medical imaging, portable chemical sensing, or autonomous navigation. However, current chip-integrated pulse sources lack the required peak power, and on-chip amplification of femtosecond pulses has been an unresolved challenge. Here, addressing this challenge, we report  >50-fold amplification of 1 GHz-repetition-rate chirped femtosecond pulses in a CMOS-compatible photonic chip to 800 W peak power with 116 fs pulse duration. This power level is 2-3 orders of magnitude higher compared to those in previously demonstrated on-chip pulse sources and can provide the power needed to address key applications. To achieve this, detrimental nonlinear effects are mitigated through all-normal dispersion, large mode-area and rare-earth-doped gain waveguides. These results offer a pathway to chip-integrated femtosecond technology with peak power levels characteristic of table-top sources.

Topical tapinarof is used to treat plaque psoriasis (a skin disease in which red and scaly patches form are appeared on some areas of the body). The goal of the current research is to establish a facile and rapid fluorimetric technique for tapinarof analysis. The approach relied on the reaction between the drug and zinc ion through metal complexation to produce a highly-fluorescent product. The fluorescence was further enhanced by adding sodium dodecyl sulfate, and it was observed at 542 nm following excitation at 497 nm. With a correlation coefficient of 0.9997, the association between emission intensity and tapinarof concentration was linear between 2.0 and 120 ng mL-1. 1.021 ng mL-1 was the quantitation limit while 0.366 ng mL-1 was the detection limit. The buffer type, pH and concentration, type of surfactant and concentration, and finally the diluting solvent were among the reaction conditions that were closely examined and it was found that the optimum conditions were obtained upon employing teorell-stenhagen buffer optimized at pH 6.0, 1.38 × 10-2 M SDS and distilled water as a solvent are the suitable choice. With great precision and reliability, the drug under study was quantified using this method in ointment formulations. The proposed method's level of greenness was assessed using two methodologies: the analytical greenness metric (AGREE) and the Green Analytical Procedure Index (GAPI), with good recovery results ensuring high efficiency of the proposed approach on analysis of ointment without any interference from additives and excipients.

The efficacious treatment of muscle and joint pain relies heavily on etofenamate (ETO) and benzyl nicotinate (BN), which possess robust anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties when paired with methylparaben (MP) or benzyl alcohol (BA). In this study, we have established and validated innovative RP-UPLC methods for assessing ETO and BN in the presence of MP or BA in their dosage forms, employing eight green tools to evaluate their eco-friendliness and effectiveness. Reversed phase-ultra-performance liquid chromatography (RP-UPLC) technique employs a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min on Waters Acquity UPLC BEH Column (C18, 1.7 µm, 100 mm × 2.1 mm), detection at 254 nm using a photo diode array (PDA) detector and mobile phase of 0.05 M KH2PO4 buffer, acetonitrile, and methanol (50:15:35, v/v/v) adjusted pH 6.0 with 0.2% triethylamine. For ETO, BN, MP, and BA, the calibration curves were linear and ranged from 0.005 to 1.0, from 0.001 to 0.2, from 0.002 to 0.08, and from 0.0001 to 0.1 mg/mL, respectively. The correlation value was 0.9999, and the accuracy findings ranged from 98.81% to 100.56%. Consequently, the methodology has been successfully implemented in assay testing for the pharmaceuticals in the presence of the MP or BA, demonstrating the high selectivity of these approaches. The present study presents the Blue Applicability Grade Index (BAGI), an innovative approach that complements green metrics in practical white analytical chemistry. According to the International Council for Harmonisation (ICH) criteria, the procedures were effectively validated.

Nickel-iron-based spinel oxide was prepared and supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes to enhance the electrochemical oxidation of ethylene glycol in an alkaline medium. NiFe2O4 was prepared using facile sol-gel techniques. Then the prepared material was characterized using different bulk and surface techniques like powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmitted electron microscope (TEM). Different electrodes of NiFe2O4/CNT ratios were prepared to find out the optimum spinel oxide/CNT ratio. The activity of the metal spinel oxides composite was characterized toward ethylene glycol conversion by different electrochemical techniques like cyclic voltammetry (CV), Chronoamperometry (CA), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The modified electrode reached an oxidation current of 43 mA cm-2 in a solution of 1.0 M ethylene glycol and 1.0 M NaOH. Furthermore, some kinetics parameters (like diffusion coefficient, and rate constant) were calculated to evaluate the catalytic performance. Additionally, the electrode showed extreme stability for long-term ethylene glycol oxidation.

Astronomical precision spectroscopy underpins searches for life beyond Earth, direct observation of the expanding Universe and constraining the potential variability of physical constants on cosmological scales. Laser frequency combs can provide the required accurate and precise calibration to the astronomical spectrographs. For cosmological studies, extending the calibration with such astrocombs to the ultraviolet spectral range is desirable, however, strong material dispersion and large spectral separation from the established infrared laser oscillators have made this challenging. Here, we demonstrate astronomical spectrograph calibration with an astrocomb in the ultraviolet spectral range below 400 nm. This is accomplished via chip-integrated highly nonlinear photonics in periodically-poled, nano-fabricated lithium niobate waveguides in conjunction with a robust infrared electro-optic comb generator, as well as a chip-integrated microresonator comb. These results demonstrate a viable route towards astronomical precision spectroscopy in the ultraviolet and could contribute to unlock the full potential of next-generation ground-based and future space-based instruments.

Mutations in more than 50 different genes cause primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) by disrupting the activity of motile cilia that facilitate mucociliary transport (MCT). Knowledge of PCD has come from studies identifying disease-causing mutations, characterizing structural cilia abnormalities, finding genotype-phenotype relationships, and studying the cell biology of cilia. Despite these important findings, we still lack effective treatments and people with PCD have significant pulmonary impairment. As with many other diseases, a better understanding of pathogenic mechanisms may lead to effective treatments. To pursue disease mechanisms, we used CRISPR-Cas9 to develop a PCD pig with a disrupted DNAI1 gene. PCD pig airway cilia lacked the outer dynein arm and had impaired beating. MCT was impaired under both baseline conditions and after cholinergic stimulation in PCD pigs. Neonatal PCD pigs developed neonatal respiratory distress with evidence of atelectasis, air trapping, and airway mucus obstruction. Despite airway mucus accumulation, lung bacterial counts were similar between neonatal wild-type and PCD pigs. Sinonasal disease was present in all neonatal PCD pigs. Older PCD pigs developed worsening airway mucus obstruction, inflammation, and bacterial infection. This pig model closely mimics the disease phenotype seen in people with PCD and can be used to better understand the pathophysiology of PCD airway disease.

Mizolastine is an antihistamine drug that is commonly used for treatment of chronic urticaria and allergic rhinitis. In this study, a facile, rapid, and sustainable fluorimetric method was established for the estimation of mizolastine in pharmaceutical and biological matrices for the first time. The approach methodology relied on the direct assessment of mizolastine's intrinsic fluorescence at 313 nm after excitation at 272 nm. This intrinsic fluorescence, stemming from the benzimidazole fluorophore moiety in mizolastine structure, serves as a distinctive marker for its precise quantification in the spiked human plasma and pharmaceutical formulations with high %recovery. The method exhibits reasonable sensitivity with lower limits of detection and quantification of 5.4 and 16.6 ng mL-1, respectively, across a concentration range of 25.0-2000.0 and 50-1000 ng mL-1 for the standard mizolastine analysis and mizolastine assay in the plasma sample, respectively. Moreover, the established method was applied to assess tablet content uniformity and mizolastine assay in plasma samples with high recoveries (98.50%-100.20%). Such applications underscore the method's potential applicability within quality control laboratories, preventing the need for sample preparation or laborious extraction steps. Finally, the method's sustainability and practicality were confirmed by applying different greenness and whiteness metrics, yielding excellent results.

Monitoring antipsychotic drugs in biological fluids, such as human serum and urine, is important for ensuring the safety and efficacy of psychiatric treatments. This process helps maintain therapeutic drug levels, minimize side effects, and optimize patient well-being. Chlorpromazine (CZ) is a widely prescribed antipsychotic drug used for conditions like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and acute psychosis. Almost all existing sensing techniques for CZ are either insensitive spectrophotometric methods or involve long and complex chromatographic procedures, limiting their routine use. In this work, we introduce a facile, green, and sensitive fluorimetric strategy with high reproducibility for detecting CZ in its pure form, tablet formulation, and spiked human plasma and urine without the need for derivatization reactions. The proposed method relies on the inhibition of the intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer (PET) effect by using 2.0 M acetic acid. This approach enables the linear detection of CZ from 3.0 to 600 ng/mL with remarkably low quantitation and detection limits of 1.51 and 0.49 ng/mL, respectively. Moreover, the developed method's greenness was evaluated.

Nanomaterials offer several promising prospects in the field of farm animal reproduction, encompassing a broad range of applications such as transgenesis and the precise delivery of substances to sperm cells, antimicrobial, antioxidants properties as well as their potent role in improving cryopreservation methods. The aim of the present study is to explore the effect of supplementing the semen extender with 10 µg/mL nano gold (Au-NPs10), 10 µg/mL nano silver (Ag-NPs10), 1 µg/mL nano selenium (Se-NPs1), and 100 µg/mL nano zinc oxide (ZnO-NPs100) on sperm characteristics and kinematics parameters, acrosome integrity, oxidative biomarkers, morphological and apoptosis-like changes of frozen-thawed buffalo bull sperm, and, ultimately, their fertilizing capacity. The results revealed that all aforementioned nano materials significantly improved viability, progressive motility, membrane integrity, acrosome integrity, and kinematic parameters as well as apoptosis-like changes of post-thawed buffalo bull sperm compared to the control (p < 0.05). No discernible effects were observed on sperm ultrastructure morphology measures as a response to the addition of these metallic nanoparticles to the extender. The values of caspase 3 significantly decreased by 64.22, 45.99, 75.59, and 49.39% in Au-NPs10, Ag-NPs10, Se-NPs1, and ZnO-NPs100 treated groups, respectively, compared to the control. The addition of 100 µg ZnO-NPs to the extender significantly decreased the total count of bacteria, fungi, and yeast compared to the control (p < 0.05). The AuNPs10 and SeNPs1 treated groups showed lower content of malondialdehyde, hydrogen peroxide, and nitric oxide concentrations and higher values of total antioxidant capacity of post-thawed extended semen (p < 0.05). Pregnancy rates increased by 17.5, 20, and 30% in buffalo cows inseminated with sperm treated with ZnO-NPs100, Se-NPs1, and Au-NPs10, respectively, compared to the control group. The present results indicate that the freezing extender supplemented with metallic nanoparticles can be an effective strategy to enhance the cryotolerance and fertility potential of buffalo bull sperm.

Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs) are crucial therapeutic targets for both the early and severe stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Chalcones and their chromone-based derivatives are well-known building blocks with anti-Alzheimer properties. This study synthesized 4-benzyloxychalcone derivatives and characterized their structures using IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and HRMS. Additionally, the synthesized 4-benzyloxychalcone derivatives were tested for anti-acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. The synthesized compounds outperformed galantamine, which is used as a positive control against acetylcholinesterase. Utilizing an acetylcholinesterase (AChE) receptor (PDB ID: 4EY7)-chalcone derivative (12a-c), a molecular docking investigation was performed on the synthesized compounds. The goal was to predict the binding sites and energies of the derivatives with respect to the receptor amino acids. The dynamic behavior of the ligand-receptor complex resulting from the interaction of the best docking compounds 12a and 12c with the acetylcholinesterase receptor was used to analyze the stability via MD simulation. MM/GBSA and MM/PBSA were used to calculate free binding energies using snapshots from system trajectories. Advanced computational approaches incorporating long-range corrections were utilized to calculate the molecular characteristics of chalcone derivatives 12a-c at the DFT/wB97XD/6-311++G(d,p) level. We used the molecular electrostatic surface potential (MESP) with high-quality data and visualization to find the most active site in these molecules. Reactivity descriptors, including the condensed Fukui function, chemical hardness (η), dual descriptors, chemical potential (µ), and electrophilicity (ω), were calculated for the chalcone derivatives.

Rice straw is considered an agricultural waste harmful to the environment, which is abundant in most parts of the world. From this point, the present study is devoted to preparing new composites of two types of glue based on rice straw as a plentiful, low-cost matrix. Straw glue samples were prepared by mixing 20% wt. of rice straw with 80% wt. of animal glue (RS-An) and polyvinyl acetate (RS-PVAC) at different thicknesses of 1, 2, and 3 cm. The chemical composition of the prepared samples was identified by energy dispersive X-ray analysis and their morphology was examined using a scanning electron microscope. The mechanical test explored that RS-An and RS-PVAC respectively required a stress of 25.2 and 25.5 MPa before reaching the breaking point. γ-ray shielding performance was analyzed and determined at numerous photon energies from 0.059 to 1.408 MeV emitted from five-point γ-rays sources using NaI (Tl). Linear attenuation coefficient was calculated by obtaining the area under the peak of the energy spectrum observed from Genie 2000 software in the presence and absence of the sample. The experimental results of mass attenuation coefficient were compared with theoretical data of XCOM software with relative deviation ranging from 0.10 to 2.99%. Geant4 Monte Carlo simulation code was also employed to validate the experimental results. The relative deviation of XCOM and Geant4 outcomes was 0.09-1.77%, which indicates a good agreement between them. Other radiation shielding parameters such as half value layer (HVL), tenth value layer, and mean free path were calculated in three ways: experimentally, theoretically from the XCOM database, and by simulation using Geant4 code. Additionally, effective atomic number (Zeff), effective atomic number (Neff), equivalent atomic number (Zeq), and buildup factors were evaluated. It was confirmed that the γ-ray shielding properties were further boosted by mixing rice straw with the animal glue compared to the synthetic one.

Increased cardiovascular risk has been associated with certain platelet morphological parameters, and several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been reported to be linked. Still, little is known about their role among children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). So, we aimed to investigate platelet parameters and lipid profile changes in relation to rs7961894 SNP in children with T1DM. Eighty children with T1DM and eighty apparently healthy controls participated in this cross-sectional study. Platelet count, mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW), plateletcrit (PCT), HbA1c, triglycerides, total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were measured, and atherogenic indices were calculated. Using a real-time polymerase chain allelic discrimination technique, rs7961894 SNP was genotyped. Children with T1DM had significantly higher MPV, PDW, TC, and LDL-C compared to controls. 25% of patients had rs7961894 CT genotype with significantly higher MPV, PDW, PCT, LDL-C, triglycerides, Castelli's risk index II (CRI II), and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) compared to CC genotyped patients. MPV correlated significantly with CRI II and AIP, PDW with CRI II, while PCT correlated substantially with HbA1c, LDL-C, CRI II, and AIP. rs7961894 CT genotype was a significant dependent predictor of the changes in MPV, PDW, and PCT in multivariate regression analysis.Conclusion: In children with T1DM, rs7961894 CT genotype is significantly linked to MPV, PDW, and PCT changes, which showed a substantial relationship to CRI II and AIP, highlighting the importance of monitoring these patients to identify potential cardiovascular risks early. Background Patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) have a high serum concentration of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), whereas their serum-free thyroxine concentrations are normal. Lipid metabolism is regulated in large part by thyroid hormones. It could be connected to a changed lipid profile. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between SCH and alterations in the lipid profile. Methodology Data from 99 patients with SCH and 109 euthyroid cases were collected from King Abdulaziz Medical City, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from 2016 to 2022. Patients older than 18 years were included in the study. The groups were matched in terms of gender, age, and body mass index. SCH was defined as a TSH value of 4.5 to 10 mIU/L, and normal T4 as 5 to 18 µg/dL. Control cases had a normal TSH ranging from 0.45 to 4.5 mIU/L. The total serum cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and triglyceride (TG) levels in both groups were examined and the results were recorded. Results In comparison to the control group, SCH patients had greater median glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) (p = 0.001) and lower median vitamin D levels (p = 0.004) before therapy. Before therapy, SCH patients also showed considerably lower HDL levels and significantly higher LDL and TG levels (p < 0.001). Conclusions There is a substantial correlation between SCH and reduced HDL and vitamin D levels. It was linked to increased TG, LDL, and HbA1c levels. Only vitamin D and LDL were pathologically high. Treatment with levothyroxine raised total and LDL cholesterol levels. Future research should look into the affordability of treating SCH.

Hsp27 is a member of the small heat-shock proteins (sHSPs) - the known cellular line of defence against abnormal protein folding behaviors. Nevertheless, its upregulation is linked to a variety of pathological disorders, including several types of cancers. The ceramide synthases (CerS) mediate the synthesis of ceramide, a critical structural and signaling lipid. Functionally, downstream ceramide metabolites are implicated in the apoptosis process and their abnormal functionality has been linked to anticancer resistance. Studies showed that CerS1 are possibly inhibited by Hsp27 leading to biochemical anticancer effects in vitro. Nevertheless, the nature of such protein-protein interaction (PPI) has not been considerably investigated in molecular terms, hence, we present the first description of the dynamics CerS1-Hsp27 interaction landscapes using molecular dynamics simulations. Time-scale molecular dynamics simulation analysis indicated a system-wide conformational events of decreased stability, increased flexibility, reduced compactness, and decreased folding of CerS1. Analysis of binding energy showed a favorable interaction entailing 56 residues at the interface and a total stabilizing energy of -158 KJ/mol. The CerS1 catalytic domain experienced an opposite trend compared to the protein backbone. Yet, these residues adopted a highly compact conformation as per DCCM and DSSP analysis. Furthermore, conserved residues (SER 212, ASP 213, ALA 240, GLY 243, ASP 319) comprising the substrate shuttling machinery showed notable rigidity implying a restrained ceramide precursor access and assembly; hence, a possible inhibitory mechanism. Findings from this report would streamline a better molecular understanding of CerS1-Hsp27 interactions and decipher its potential avenue toward unexplored anti-cancer mechanisms and therapy.

A newly green method for the sensitive quantification of cloperastine, a cough suppressant, in spiked human plasma and its pharmaceutical formulation was designed for the first time. The established method depends on the enhancement of the weak fluorescence of cloperastine using 50 mM sulfuric acid to impair the photoinduced electron transfer produced from the nitrogen atom of piperidine moiety in cloperastine. This full protonation in an acid medium leads to an enhancement in the fluorescence of cloperastine, permitting its linear determination from 0.2 to 5.0 µg/mL with LOD and LOQ of 0.04 and 0.13 µg/mL, respectively. Moreover, the studied drug was estimated in its pharmaceutical market formulations as well as spiked human plasma. Furthermore, the greenness of the described method was evaluated.

Adipose thermogenesis has been actively investigated as a therapeutic target for improving metabolic dysfunction in obesity. However, its applicability to middle-aged and older populations, which bear the highest obesity prevalence in the United States (approximately 40%), remains uncertain due to age-related decline in thermogenic responses. In this study, we investigated the effects of chronic thermogenic stimulation using the ß3-adrenergic (AR) agonist CL316,243 (CL) on systemic metabolism and adipose function in aged (18-month-old) C57BL/6JN mice. Sustained ß3-AR treatment resulted in reduced fat mass, increased energy expenditure, increased fatty acid oxidation and mitochondrial activity in adipose depots, improved glucose homeostasis, and a favorable adipokine profile. At the cellular level, CL treatment increased uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1)-dependent thermogenesis in brown adipose tissue (BAT). However, in white adipose tissue (WAT) depots, CL treatment increased glycerol and lipid de novo lipogenesis (DNL) and turnover suggesting the activation of the futile substrate cycle of lipolysis and reesterification in a UCP1-independent manner. Increased lipid turnover was also associated with the simultaneous upregulation of proteins involved in glycerol metabolism, fatty acid oxidation, and reesterification in WAT. Further, a dose-dependent impact of CL treatment on inflammation was observed, particularly in subcutaneous WAT, suggesting a potential mismatch between fatty acid supply and oxidation. These findings indicate that chronic ß3-AR stimulation activates distinct cellular mechanisms that increase energy expenditure in BAT and WAT to improve systemic metabolism in aged mice. Considering that people lose BAT with aging, activation of futile lipid cycling in WAT presents a novel strategy for improving age-related metabolic dysfunction.

AIMS: To examine immigrant and minority parents' experiences of having a newborn infant in the neonatal intensive care unit and explore healthcare professionals' experiences in delivering care to immigrant and minority families. DESIGN: A meta-ethnographic review informed by eMERGe guidelines. METHODS: We conducted a systematic literature review. Studies were included if they explored immigrant or minority parent experiences in neonatal intensive care units and health professional experiences delivering care to immigrant and minority families in neonatal intensive care. Reporting followed ENTREQ guidelines. DATA SOURCES: Database searches included CINAHL, MEDLINE, PubMed, PsycINFO, Scopus and Google Scholar. Boolean search strategies were used to identify qualitative studies. No limitations on commencement date; the end date was 23rd August 2022. PRISMA guidelines used for screening and article quality assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute criteria for qualitative studies. RESULTS: Initial search yielded 2468 articles, and nine articles met criteria for inclusion. Three overarching themes were identified: (1) Overwhelming Emotions, (subthemes: Overwhelming Inadequacy; Cultural Expressions of Guilt; Not Belonging), (2) Circles of Support, (subthemes: Individual Level-Spirituality; External Level-Connecting with Family; Structured Peer-to-Peer Support), (3) Negotiating Relationships with Healthcare Professionals (subthemes: Connecting; Disconnected; Linguistic Barriers). Interactions between healthcare professionals and immigrant and minority parents were the strongest recurring theme. CONCLUSIONS: There can be a mismatch between immigrant and minority families' needs and the service support provided, indicating improvements in neonatal intensive care are needed. Despite challenges, parents bring cultural and family strengths that support them through this time, and many neonatal intensive care staff provide culturally respectful care. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE: Professionals should be encouraged to identify and work with family strengths to ensure parents feel supported in the neonatal intensive care unit. Findings can inform policy and practice development to strengthen health professionals capabilities to support immigrant and minority families in neonatal units. REPORTING METHOD: The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses checklists were used to report the screening process.
