BACKGROUND: Up to 55 % of students experience test anxiety (TA), which is characterized by intense physiological and psychological symptoms before or during exams, such as anxiety, fear of failure, sweating, or increased heart rate. Furthermore, TA increases graduation times and can result in discontinuance of the graduate program all together. Previous research demonstrated the beneficial effects of combining cognitive behavioral therapy with imagery rescripting, however, treatment programs are comparably long. Hence, they do not account for the students´ time-sensitive schedules. Therefore, the present study investigates a two-session short-intervention using imagery rescripting to treat TA. METHODS: 44 students and pupils were randomly assigned to either the two-session imagery rescripting intervention (22 participants) or the waitlist-control condition (22 participants). One week before the intervention clinical interviews were conducted and self-report questionnaires on TA, self-efficacy, symptoms of depression, and intrusive prospective images were completed (T1). The same questionnaires were completed one week (T2) and six months after the intervention (T3). RESULTS: Test anxiety significantly decreased from T1 to T2, as well as from T1 to T3 within the intervention group. Furthermore, there were medium to large within and between group effects for situational test anxiety, self-efficacy, symptoms of depression, as well as prospective intrusive images, showing significant improvements for the intervention group at six months follow-up. LIMITATIONS: The study is limited to the comparably small sample size, as well as the sole usage of self-report measurements. CONCLUSIONS: The presented short-intervention provides a feasible treatment technique, which can be easily applied within school and university counseling centers.

PURPOSE: To investigate differences in the retinal vessel area density (VAD) on optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) between eyes with unilateral herpetic viral anterior uveitis (VAU) (herpes-simplex virus (HSV) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV)) and the non-affected fellow eye. METHODS: In this monocentric, observational, prospective case series we analyzed the VAD of the macula, optic disc, and peripapillary region in affected and non-affected eyes of 22 patients with HSV-positive and 22 patients with VZV-positive VAU using OCTA. We analyzed also the visual field mean deviation (MD), the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, Bruch's Membrane Opening-Minimum Rim Width (BMO-MRW), and ganglion cell layer (GCL) thickness on OCT and correlated the results with the different VADs. RESULTS: The macular VAD in the superficial vascular plexus (SVC) was significant lower in the affected compared to the non-affected eye for both viruses (HSV: 33.0% ± 3.3% vs. 34.7% ± 2.6%, p = 0.011; adjusted p = 0.040; VZV: 33.1% ± 3.2% vs. 34.3% ± 2.8%, p = 0.012; adjusted p = 0.050). Additionally, the VAD of the peripapillary SVC differed between the affected and non-affected eye for VZV-positive VAU (47.1% ± 6.2% vs. 50.5% ± 6.3%, p = 0.048, adjusted p = 0.100). For both HSV-positive and VZV-positive VAU, there were correlations between macular or peripapillary SVC VAD and BMO-MRW, GCL thickness, RNFL thickness or MD of the affected eye. CONCLUSION: We observed vascular dysfunction characterized by decreased macular and peripapillary VAD in the superficial plexus on OCTA in eyes with HSV- and VZV-positive VAU compared to non-affected fellow eyes. These changes might be an early sign of glaucomatous damage or may be a direct consequence of the herpes viruses themselves.

Studies on Emotionally Dysregulated Behavior (EDB) demonstrated that the conduct thereof is associated with emotion dysregulation and preceded by mental imagery of EDB, which can direct future behavior. These findings are specifically important within the context of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), where emotion dysregulation and EDB are at the core of the disorder. The present study aims to evaluate the efficacy of imagery rescripting (IR) in treating emotion dysregulation associated with EDB in patients diagnosed with BPD. Forty-eight females diagnosed with BPD were randomly allocated to the IR intervention or treatment-as-usual group. Assessment took place one week before the first treatment session, as well as one week, and twelve weeks after the last treatment session evaluating emotion regulation strategies, borderline-symptomatology, EDB, depressiveness, impulsivity, mental imagery, and illness severity. Within-, and between subject, intention-to-treat-, and per-protocol analysis were conducted. Results showed decreased maladaptive emotion regulation strategies and increased adaptive emotion regulation strategies within the intervention group. Borderline-symptomatology improved immediately after treatment for the intervention group. Additionally, BPD patients within the intervention group improved regarding their impulsivity, depressiveness, and EDB symptomatology in comparison to patients in the TAU group. The presented intervention has proven to be effective in improving BPD-related symptomatology, such as emotion regulation, EDB, depressiveness, and impulsivity. The ability to visualize the nerves of the lower extremities differs from that of the upper extremities in sonography because the soft tissue cover is significantly larger in some cases. Landmarks are also defined for the lower extremities, which enable precise visualization of the nerves. Nerves and muscles are to be understood as a functional unit. In addition to the clarification of nerve compression syndromes, polyneuropathies and nerve tumors, sonography is also used to visualize muscle atrophy.

PURPOSE: To analyse differences in the retinal microvasculature in eyes with cytomegalovirus (CMV)-positive Posner-Schlossman syndrome (PSS) compared to the non-affected eyes using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS: In this monocentric, observational prospective case series, 25 patients with unilateral CMV-positive PSS were included. We compared the vessel area densities (VAD) in the macula, optic disc, and peripapillary region in PSS-affected and non-affected eyes using OCTA. We compared the visual fields (VF) of the affected and healthy eyes of each patient. The mean deviation (MD) of the VF was analysed together with the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness to evaluate the strength of correlation with the VAD parameters. RESULTS: The VAD of the peripapillary superficial vascular complex (SVC) is significantly reduced in CMV-positive PSS-affected eyes (46.1 ± 9.3% versus 50.1 ± 6.3%, p = 0.008, adjusted p = 0.048). The VAD of the deeper macular, papillary, and peripapillary layers showed no differences between the affected and non-affected eyes. The mean deviation and the retinal nerve fibre layer thickness had correlations with the VAD of the macula (r = 0.451, p = 0.001, r = 0.553, p < 0.001), the peripapillary SCV (r = 0.430, p = 0.002, r = 0.723, p < 0.001), and the papillary region (r = 0.512, p < 0.001, r = 0.292, p = 0.039). Patients receiving systemic antiviral therapy (SAT) showed better VAD of the peripapillary choriocapillary layer (p = 0.001, no therapy: 31.4 ± 1.9%, SAT: 35.0 ± 1.6%), and choroidal layer (p = 0.009, no therapy: 34.2 ± 0.3%, SAT: 36.3 ± 1.8%) compared to those with no SAT. CONCLUSION: A lower peripapillary VAD in the SVC might indicate vascular dysfunction as a sign of glaucomatous damage. Relationship dysfunction-marked by frequent conflicts-is one of the hallmark features of borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, the BPD couple as a dyad and partner-related features have rarely been taken into account. The aim of the present study was to investigate hormonal, personality, and relationship relevant factors, such as relationship satisfaction, attachment, and trauma in both partners within a dyad where one partner is diagnosed with BPD. The total sample consisted of 26 heterosexual couples. All studies were conducted at 2 p.m. Primary outcomes: Neo-Five-Factor-Inventory, Childhood Trauma Questionnaire, Experiences in Close Relationships Scale. Secondary outcomes: Problem List, Partnership Questionnaire, Questionnaire for Assessing Dyadic Coping. Upon questionnaire completion, one saliva sample was taken via passive drool to assess baseline cortisol and testosterone levels. Results showed that females with BPD have higher scores on childhood maltreatment, dysfunctional attachment styles, and neuroticism than mentally healthy females. Furthermore, they have more relationship-related problems and are less satisfied in their romantic relationship. Male partners of women with BPD showed lower testosterone levels, higher levels of childhood maltreatment, dysfunctional attachment styles, neuroticism, and openness compared with the healthy control partners. Furthermore, childhood trauma, neuroticism as well as dysfunctional attachment styles displayed a significant positive correlation with relationship-related problems. Traumatic childhood experiences, insecure attachment styles as well as neurotic personality characteristics contribute to increased relationship disruptions in couples. Relevant hormonal and psychosocial parameters in BPD partners should be taken into account when treating females with BPD.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether XEN® implantation is a reasonable and safe method to lower the intraocular pressure (IOP) and amount of medication for adult primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) over a 3-year period. The influence of the type of anesthesia, previous glaucoma surgery, and postoperative interventions on the outcome were examined. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 96 eyes were included. XEN® implantation was performed as sole procedure under general (n = 86) or local anesthesia (n = 10). IOP and number of glaucoma medication were assessed preoperatively: day 1, week 6, month 3, 6, 12, 24, and 36. Further outcome parameters were Kaplan-Meier success rates, secondary intervention, and complication rates. RESULTS: IOP decreased from 20.7 ± 5.1 to 12.8 ± 2.5 mmHg at the 36-month follow-up (p < 0.001) and glaucoma therapy was reduced from 3.3 ± 0.8 to 1.2 ± 1.6 (36 months, p < 0.001). Transient postoperative hypotony was documented in 26 eyes (27.1%). General anesthesia resulted in a significant improvement of the survival rate compared to local anesthesia (77% vs. 50%, p = 0.044). Prior iStent inject®, Trabectome®, or SLT laser had no significant impact, such as filter bleb revision. The number of postoperative needlings had a significantly negative influence (p = 0.012). CONCLUSION: XEN® implantation effectively and significantly lowers the IOP and number of glaucoma therapy in POAG in the 36-month follow-up with a favorable profile of side effects and few complications. In case of IOP, general anesthesia has a significant positive influence on the survival rate, whereas prior SLT or MIGS does not have significant impact.

PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy and safety of ultrathin Descemet stripping (automated) endothelial keratoplasty (UT-DS(A)EK) versus Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) for the treatment of Fuchs endothelial dystrophy (FED) and bullous keratopathy (BK). DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: Literature containing DMEK and UT-DSAEK were searched in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, PubMed, EMBASE, LILACS, and through manual reference searching. Studies were included that measured the outcome of interventions-including best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), endothelial cell density (ECD), and postoperative complications, especially graft detachment with the need of re-bubbling, graft rejection, graft failure, and postoperative elevated intraocular pressure (IOP)-in patients with FED and BK. Included outcomes were pooled as standardized mean differences (SMD) or risk ratios (RR) using random effects models. Inter-study heterogeneity was assessed using the Q-test and I2 statistic. RESULTS: Seven (of 163) studies met all the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Meta-analysis showed a significantly better BCVA 12 months postoperatively, but an increased re-bubbling rate in eyes after DMEK compared with eyes after UT-DS(A)EK (BCVA: SMD = 0.50 [95% CI 0.27-0.74] and re-bubbling rate: RR = 0.33 [95% CI 0.16-0.67]). All other parameters did not differ significantly between both interventions, although estimates were imprecise (graft failure: RR = 0.65 [95% CI 0.18-2.30], graft rejection: RR = 1.40 [95% CI 0.27-7.30], and postoperative intraocular pressure elevation: RR = 1.14 [95% CI 0.60-2.18]). Postoperative SMDs of ECD could not be evaluated due to significant heterogeneity between studies. CONCLUSIONS: Although the improvement in BCVA was higher after UT-DS(A)EK than after conventional DS(A)EK, the BCVA after DMEK was still superior. The complication rates were comparable for both procedures, except for the higher rate of re-bubbling after DMEK.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the outcome of Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) in eyes with pre-existing glaucoma. DESIGN: In this retrospective, observational case series we included data of 150 consecutive DMEKs in eyes with pre-existing glaucoma of 150 patients after excluding data of the second treated eye of each patient and of re-DMEKs during follow-up. Cumulative incidences of IOP elevation (IOP > 21 mmHg or ≥ 10 mmHg increase in IOP from preoperative value), post-DMEK glaucoma (need of an additional intervention due to worsening of the IOP), graft rejection, and graft failure rate were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis. COX regression analysis was used to evaluate independent risk factors. RESULTS: The 36-month cumulative incidence of IOP elevation was 53.5% [95 CI 43.5-63.5%] and of post-DMEK glaucoma 36.3% [95 CI 26.3-46.3%]. Graft rejection occurred with a 36-month cumulative incidence of 9.2% [CI 95% 2.3-16.1]. None of the analyzed risk factors increased the risk for the development of graft rejection. The 36-month cumulative incidence of graft failure was 16.6% [CI 95% 8.4-24.8]. Independent risk factors for graft failure were the indication for DMEK "status after graft failure" (n = 16) compared to Fuchs' dystrophy (n = 74) (p = 0.045, HR 8.511 [CI 95% 1.054-68.756]) and pre-existing filtrating surgery via glaucoma drainage device (GDD) (n = 10) compared to no surgery/iridectomy (n = 109) (p = 0.014, HR 6.273 [CI 95% 1.456-27.031]). CONCLUSION: The risks of postoperative complications (IOP elevation, post-DMEK glaucoma, graft rejection, and graft failure) in patients with pre-existing glaucoma are high. In particular, pre-existing filtrating surgery via GDD implantation-but not trabeculectomy-and DMEK after graft failure increase the risk of graft failure.

PURPOSE: Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) accounts for >50% of all corneal transplants in Germany. So far, no data from such a large multicenter study have been published. METHODS: This retrospective study included 3200 DMEKs at seven departments performed for Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD) or bullous keratopathy (BK). We evaluated best corrected visual acuity (BCVA, logMAR), endothelial cell density (ECD, cells/mm2 ), minimal corneal thickness (CT, µm), rebubbling-, primary transplant failure- and immune reaction-rate. Changes over time were evaluated by linear mixed models for repeated measures and correlation with case number by center by weighted linear regression. RESULTS: For patients without vision-limiting comorbidities (74% of all analysed eyes, n = 2270), mean BCVA improved from 0.6 ± 0.4 logMAR to 0.2 ± 0.2 logMAR 6 months (p < 0.001, n = 1441) and 0.1 ± 0.2 logMAR 12 months (p = 0.001, n = 1402) postoperatively. BK- had a worse BCVA compared to FECD-patients (0.3 ± 0.5 vs. 0.1 ± 0.2 logMAR [p < 0.001] at 1 year). ECD declined from 2465 ± 259 cells/mm2 (n = 2876 preoperatively) to 1587 ± 433 cells/mm2 after 12 months (p < 0.001, n = 1237). Mean rebubbling rate was 0.4 ± 0.7/eye. 784 eyes (25%) received at least one rebubbling. More rebubblings correlated with a lower ECD, a worse BCVA, a higher CT, and higher transplant failure and rejection rates (p < 0.001, p = 0.013 for BCVA at 12 months). A single rebubbling did not influence the BCVA (p = 0.785). Graft failure rate was 3% (n = 67), rejection rate 1.5% (n = 48). CONCLUSION: Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty increases visual acuity with low transplant failure- and rejection-rates. FECD has a better outcome than BK. Since a quarter of all patients need a rebubbling, this should be included in the informed consent. Remarkably, one rebubbling has no influence on the outcome.

To analyze the effect of filtration in glaucoma surgery, XEN versus trabeculectomy, on the vessel area density (VAD) of the macular, papillary and peripapillary regions using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A). This prospective cohort study analyzes the vascular architecture of 47 eyes of 45 patients after two different filtrating surgery procedures (XEN stent and trabeculectomy (TE)) using the OCT-A. Participants who had an outsourced medical anti-glaucoma therapy received filtrating surgery in a 2:1 (XEN: TE) ratio. The primary outcome measurements were changes in the VAD in various layers of retinal perfusion and the foveal avascular zone (FAZ). Both interventions achieved a significant postoperative reduction in IOP (XEN 17.6 ± 3.8-13.7 ± 3.8 mmHg; TE 21.2 ± 5.4-8.8 ± 2.6 mmHg). VAD values did not change significantly after filtrating surgery. Comparing both procedures, a significantly higher VAD for patients treated with TE was seen for the superficial vessel complex (SVC) 375 µm and 750 µm (p = 0.011, p = 0.017), deep vessel complex (DVC) 375 µm (p = 0.029) and the optic disc (p = 0.028) after 6 months, while all other parameters did not differ significantly. In conclusion, VAD does not significantly improve after filtrating surgery in preoperative moderately IOP elevated eyes. The IOP lowering effect of filtrating surgery, however, can stabilize vascular parameters in all layers of perfusion.

BACKGROUND: As immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) are increasingly being used due to effectiveness in various tumor entities, rare side effects occur more frequently. Pericardial effusion has been reported in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) after or under treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors. However, knowledge about serositis and edemas induced by checkpoint inhibitors in other tumor entities is scarce. METHODS AND RESULTS: Four cases with sudden onset of checkpoint inhibitor induced serositis (irSerositis) are presented including one patient with metastatic cervical cancer, two with metastatic melanoma and one with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In all cases treatment with steroids was successful in the beginning, but did not lead to complete recovery of the patients. All patients required multiple punctures. Three of the patients presented with additional peripheral edema; in one patient only the lower extremities were affected, whereas the entire body, even face and eyelids were involved in the other patients. In all patients serositis was accompanied by other immune-related adverse events (irAEs). CONCLUSION: ICI-induced serositis and effusions are complex to diagnose and treat and might be underdiagnosed. For differentiation from malignant serositis pathology of the punctured fluid can be helpful (lymphocytes vs. malignant cells). Identifying irSerositis as early as possible is essential since steroids can improve symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment, due to its high prevalence and often long-lasting (health and/or psycho-social) consequences, is one of the main reasons for global health inequalities. The medical field offers many opportunities to support affected children. This gives physicians and other health professionals the opportunity to provide protective measures and therapies to affected children at an early stage. However, the level of training concerning child protection is often too low among health professionals. This can affect the quality of care as well as providing the appropriate treatment and thus, the long-term (health) burden. The present work aims to survey the state of knowledge and capacities of health professionals regarding child protection in medicine and elicit health professionals' perspectives who absolved a child protection online course on a potential need for action in Germany. METHODS: From June 2016 until February 2021, 3,360 health professionals were interviewed. Using quantitative and qualitative items, the questionnaire assessed demographic and professional background information as well as assessments regarding the awareness of child protection, abilities in child protection among health professionals and training offers in medicine. RESULTS: The analysis indicates that the topic of child protection in medicine is not as present as the high prevalence of child maltreatment would imply. The majority (94.0%; n = 3.159) of the health professionals stated that they need more knowledge and capacities regarding child protection in medicine. More than half of the health professionals assessed the importance of the issue of child protection as low among health professionals. The reasons cited included child protection as an uncomfortable topic, an unwillingness among managers, and a lack of training on the topic. CONCLUSIONS: There is too little awareness and importance regarding child protection in the medical field in Germany. Hence, it is difficult to ensure adequate care for those affected. Child protection topics should be mandatory in the training curricula of all health professionals, and quality standards for prevention and intervention should be implemented in medical institutions. Furthermore, networking in child protection has to be improved, and medical campaigns should address the topic to sensitize health professionals and society to the issue and to destigmatize the topic.

Carbohydrate-specific antibodies can serve as valuable tools to monitor alterations in the extracellular matrix resulting from pathologies. Here, the keratan sulfate-specific monoclonal antibody MZ15 was characterized in more detail by immunofluorescence microscopy as well as laser ablation ICP-MS using tissue cryosections and paraffin-embedded samples. Pretreatment with keratanase II prevented staining of samples and therefore demonstrated efficient enzymatic keratan sulfate degradation. Random fluorescent labeling and site-directed introduction of a metal cage into MZ15 were successful and allowed for a highly sensitive detection of the keratan sulfate landscape in the corneal stroma from rats and human tissue.

PURPOSE: To compare the blood flow situation in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (PXG) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). METHODS: In this prospective study a total of 26 POAG and 23 PXG eyes were included. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmological examination including standard automated perimetry, stereoscopic photographs of the optic disc, peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer analysis and examination of vascular parameters of the optic nerve head (ONH), the peripapillary region and macula using OCTA. In addition to the vascular parameters recorded by the device, the vascular images were graphically evaluated using Image J. All recorded vascular parameters were compared between both groups and correlated to structural and functional parameters. RESULTS: The mean superficial perifoveal plexus perfusion density (PD) was significantly lower in PXG eyes than compared to POAG eyes using OCTA (32.57% ± 3.57% vs. 34.92% ± 2.11%, p = 0.007). The mean PD parameters for the superficial peripapillary plexus (40.98% ± 3.04% vs. 42.09% ± 2.29%, p = 0.152) as well as the size of the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) (0.23 mm2 ± 0.1 mm2 vs. 0.23 mm2 ± 0.09 mm2) did not differ between both groups. Additional graphic evaluation using Image J showed no significant difference for superficial perifoveal plexus PD (32.97% ± 1.11% vs. 33.35% ± 0.95%, p = 0.194) and peripapillary plexus PD (46.65% ± 0.83% vs. 46.95% ± 0.5%, p = 0.127) between the groups. Retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness correlated significantly with peripapillary plexus PD for both OCTA data and Image J data (p < 0.001, p = 0.032). CONCLUSION: The severity of the glaucoma seems to be crucial for peripapillary and macular perfusion densities, and not the form of glaucoma. An additional graphic evaluation is a possible step that could be implemented to improve the comparability of OCTA scans and to optimize the possibility of quantitative perfusion analysis in the case of deviating quality criteria.

Background and Objectives: A substantial portion of students report test anxiety, and those reporting low levels of self-efficacy seem to be especially affected. Previous research has indicated the relevance of mental images in the maintenance of anxiety disorders, however, no data are available with respect to test anxiety. In order to close this gap, the present study investigates the association between test anxiety, self-efficacy and mental images. Method: One hundred sixty-three university students completed an online survey. Test anxiety (PAF), general self-efficacy (WIRKALL-r), study-related self-efficacy (WIRK_STUD), intrusiveness of mental images (IFES), spontaneous use of imagery (SUIS) and vividness of imagery (VVIQ) were examined. Results: Test-related mental images were frequently reported among the surveyed students. Test anxiety showed a positive correlation with IFES and a negative correlation with self-efficacy. Mediation analyses showed that about one fifth of the influence of self-efficacy on test anxiety is mediated by IFES. Discussion: The present study gives first indication about an association between test anxiety, self-efficacy and mental images, even though the results are limited with respect to generalizability. Further investigations with respect to the impact of test-related mental images on the self-efficacy/test-anxiety linkage are needed.

In vitro thrombogenicity test systems require co-cultivation of endothelial cells and platelets under blood flow-like conditions. Here, a commercially available perfusion system is explored using plasma-treated cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) as a substrate for the endothelial cell layer. COC was characterized prior to endothelialization and co-cultivation with platelets under static or flow conditions. COC exhibits a low roughness and a moderate hydrophilicity. Flow promoted endothelial cell growth and prevented platelet adherence. These findings show the suitability of COC as substrate and the importance of blood flow-like conditions for the assessment of the thrombogenic risk of drugs or cardiovascular implant materials. Near-physiological in vitro thrombogenicity test systems for the evaluation of blood-contacting endothelialized biomaterials requires co-cultivation with platelets (PLT). However, the addition of PLT has led to unphysiological endothelial cell (EC) detachment in such in vitro systems. A possible cause for this phenomenon may be PLT activation triggered by the applied endothelial cell medium, which typically consists of basal medium (BM) and nine different supplements. To verify this hypothesis, the influence of BM and its supplements was systematically analyzed regarding PLT responses. For this, human platelet rich plasma (PRP) was mixed with BM, BM containing one of nine supplements, or with BM containing all supplements together. PLT adherence analysis was carried out in six-channel slides with plasma-treated cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) and poly(tetrafluoro ethylene) (PTFE, as a positive control) substrates as part of the six-channel slides in the absence of EC and under static conditions. PLT activation and aggregation were analyzed using light transmission aggregometry and flow cytometry (CD62P). Medium supplements had no effect on PLT activation and aggregation. In contrast, supplements differentially affected PLT adherence, however, in a polymer- and donor-dependent manner. Thus, the use of standard endothelial growth medium (BM + all supplements) maintains functionality of PLT under EC compatible conditions without masking the differences of PLT adherence on different polymeric substrates. These findings are important prerequisites for the establishment of a near-physiological in vitro thrombogenicity test system assessing polymer-based cardiovascular implant materials in contact with EC and PLT.

Indolent systemic mastocytosis (ISM) is a group of heterogenous diseases characterized by abnormal accumulation of mast cells in at least one organ. ISM can be a cause of osteoporosis. The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence, and the prognosis of ISM in a cohort of patients with osteoporosis. In this monocentric and retrospective study, patients with osteoporosis who did not receive a bone biopsy (cohort 1) and patients that subsequently received a diagnostic bone biopsy for differential diagnosis (cohort 2) are compared with patients who are diagnosed with ISM (cohort 3). A total of 8392 patients are diagnosed with osteoporosis. Out of these patients 1374 underwent a diagnostic bone biopsy resulting in 43 patients with ISM. These figures indicate that ISM is diagnosed in 0.5% of patients with osteoporosis and in 3.1% (men 5.8%) of patients who underwent bone biopsies. Patients with ISM sustained significantly more vertebral fractures in comparison to patients in cohort 2 (4.4 ± 3.6 versus 2.4 ± 2.5 vertebral fractures, p < 0.001) and women were significantly younger compared to cohort 2 (57.3 ± 12 versus 63.6 ± 12 years, p < 0.05). Only 33% showed an involvement of the skin (urticaria pigmentosa). ISM is a rare cause of osteoporosis (0.5%). However, in a subgroup of rather young male patients with osteoporosis the prevalence is more than 5%. Thus, ISM should be considered in premenopausal women and men presenting with vertebral fractures even if urticaria pigmentosa is not present.
