RESUMEN

The surgical approach for treatment of scaphoid nonunion usually involves various combinations of screws and Kirschner wires, with or without bone grafts. This article reports our results with 36 dorsal-approach bone grafting procedures for treatment of scaphoid nonunion with Kirschner wires. Union was achieved in 89%. The average follow-up was 5 years. Flexion/extension averaged 76% of the opposite wrist, and grip strength was 88% of the opposite hand. Ninety-one percent of the employed patients returned to their original jobs. The dorsal approach provides satisfactory exposure for fragment reduction and bone grafting.

RESUMEN

Scaphoid manipulation is an important part of the examination of the wrist. The "scaphoid shift" is a maneuver that is helpful in assessing scaphoid stability and in identifying scaphoid and periscaphoid pathology. The anatomic basis of the maneuver is explained and its performance and interpretation discussed.

RESUMEN

Dupuytren's disease in blacks is believed to be rare. Our recent experience with the disease at the John Cochran Veterans Administration Hospital in St Louis is described, including 2 black patients suffering from the condition. The literature is reviewed and some aspects of pathogenesis are discussed. It is our belief that Dupuytren's disease is more common in blacks than previously reported.

RESUMEN

A 5-year-old black female, the youngest patient so far reported, presented with osseous choristoma of the tongue. The lesion was located on the dorsum of the posterior tongue at the circumvallate papillae area. The origin of the tumor is unknown; however, ossification of remnants of the branchial arches is accepted by most authorities. The tumor was pedunculated with no associated symptoms, and its excision was not followed by recurrence to date.
