RESUMEN

Pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGL) are neuroendocrine tumors characterized by the excessive production of catecholamines. This study aims to describe the clinical characteristics of PPGL cases in Argentina over recent decades. A multicenter retrospective cross-sectional analysis was carried out using a database comprising both pediatric and adult patients with confirmed PPGL diagnoses based on pathological reports. A cohort of 486 patients with PPGL was recruited. Women represent 58.4% of the patients, with a mean age of 38.3 years old at the time of diagnosis and 15.2% of the patients were under the age of 18. Hypertension, as well as classic signs and symptoms, were present in 80.9% of the patients. The adrenal incidentaloma, as a mode of presentation, increased in the last two decades rising from 3.9% (1953-2000) to 21.8% (2001-2022), p<0.001. Most tumors were located within the adrenal glands, accounting 83.0% of the cases, with bilateral occurrences noted in 20.0%. The median tumor size was 4.8cm. Local recurrence and metastases were observed in 10.9% and 12.2%. Out of 412 patients, 87.0% exhibited urinary excretion elevation of catecholamines and/or their metabolites. Furthermore, 148 patients, representing 30.4% of the study population, displayed a distinct genetic profile indicative of hereditary syndromes. The distribution of hereditary syndromes revealed that MEN2, VHL, and PGL4 constituted the most prevalent syndromes. This population-based study, spanning seven decades, offers valuable insights into the demographic and clinical characteristics of PPGL patients in Argentina.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension (HTN) represents the primary individual risk factor, contributing significantly to the global burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). In our country, epidemiological research has highlighted substantial variations in the prevalence of these risk factors across different populations. However, there is a lack of epidemiological studies assessing exclusive cardiovascular risk factors within vulnerable neighborhoods characterized by extremely limited economic resources, sociocultural challenges, and inadequate healthcare access. METHODS: A multicenter cross-sectional observational study was conducted among individuals residing in economically deprived and marginalized communities, including informal settlements and underprivileged neighborhoods. Simple random sampling of households was employed. Blood pressure measurements, anthropometric assessments, and epidemiological, economic, and sociocultural questionnaires were administered. Results encompass prevalence rates, awareness levels, and blood pressure control across diverse regions. Logistic regression was utilized to identify independent variables influencing primary outcomes. RESULTS: A total of 989 participants were analyzed. The overall prevalence of hypertension was 48.2%. About 82% had a body mass index (BMI) >25. Approximately 45.3% had less than 6 years of formal education. Independent association was established between education levels below 6 years and higher hypertension prevalence. Among hypertensive individuals, 44% were unaware of their condition, with only 17.2% achieving control, correlated with having health insurance and a higher educational background. Merely 24% were receiving combined therapy. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of hypertension within vulnerable neighborhoods is alarmingly high, surpassing rates in other social strata. Knowledge, treatment, and control levels of hypertension are suboptimal, comparable to other populations. Inadequate use of combination therapy was observed. This study underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions addressing cardiovascular risk factors in poor areas to mitigate the burden of CVD.

RESUMEN

Bovine herpesvirus (BoAHV) types 1 and 5 are closely-related neurotropic alpha-herpesviruses. BoAHV-1 generally causes respiratory and genital disease but can occasionally cause encephalitis. BoAHV-5 is the causative agent of non suppurative meningoencephalitis in calves. During neuroinvasion, both viruses reach the central and peripheral nervous system. While brain alterations are well-described, the changes that occur in the medulla have not been fully detailed. In this work, we integrated and analyzed the virological findings, the microscopic lesions and the changes that occur in the expression of genes related to the innate immunity, cell cycle and apoptosis in the cervical medulla of calves experimentally-infected with BoAHV-1 and BoAHV-5. This will contribute to the understanding of the differential neuropathogenesis of these alpha-herpesviruses of cattle.

RESUMEN

Data visualization and communication are important components in disaster response management. Data management should be a basic part of emergency preparation in the same way as prepositioning essential supplies. For this preparation to be effective, well-conceived data structures and data collection systems must be in place before disasters happen, and required hardware should be designed to operate in contingency environments. However, due to challenges in disaster complexities and data management, there is still a pressing need for improvement. This paper identifies key principles to assist practitioners and software developers in designing and implementing data collection and reporting systems that can be used for data visualization during a disaster response. The authors reviewed existing literature on data and disaster management and incorporated their personal experiences as first responders with the US Army Corps of Engineers Hurricane Maria response mission to develop principles for improving data management and visualization during a disaster response. These principles are illustrated by two case studies from the Task Force Power and Operation Blue Roof mission efforts in Puerto Rico during 2017-2018. Suggested principles include considering data management as part of disaster preparedness, having flexible data tools resilient to unprecedented disaster outcomes, eg, interruption of telecommunications networks, and using diverse graphics and tools that are appropriate to their communication purpose and audience.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension (HTN) is the leading cause of mortality and disability in the world. In Argentina, almost 44% of hypertensives do not know about their condition and this may be due to the low rate of blood pressure (BP) measurements during the office visit. Our hypothesis is that the measurement and electronic recording of BP (BPMR) is not a routine practice in Argentina. OBJECTIVE: To describe the rate of office BP measurement in Argentina. METHODS: This is a retrospective, multicentre, point prevalence study. We analysed all office visits on 9/19/2019 at 9 medical institutions in 6 provinces of Argentina. RESULTS: Two thousand and eighty-two office visits were analysed. The patients' mean age was 52.1 years (18-103), 1790 (59.7%) were female, and 702 (36.1%) were hypertensives. BP was measured in 420 visits (14.1%; 95% CI 12.8-15.4). In a multivariate logistic regression model, history of HTN (OR 1.91, P<.001) and previous cardiovascular event (OR 1.76, P<.001) were associated with more odds of BPMR. The presence of cancer was associated with fewer odds of BPMR (OR .51, P<.01). Cardiology measured BP up to 49.5% (144/291 visits), followed by internal medicine 30% (152/507 visits). CONCLUSION: BPMR during office visits is deficient in Argentina and represents a missed healthcare opportunity. Different strategies are needed to detect hypertensive patients and reduce cardiovascular events.

RESUMEN

Type III interferons (IFNs) are components of the innate immunity, with IFN lambda- (λ)3 having the most potent bioactivity in humans. IFN-λ has a predominant role in epithelial cells. However, antiviral function in certain infections of the central nervous system has also been demonstrated. IFN-λ3 expression in neural tissues of cattle has not been investigated. Thus, the aim of this study was to analyze whether an antiviral IFN-λ3 response is mounted after infection with bovine alphaherpesviruses (BoHV-1 and BoHV-5) in vitro, in neuronal-type cells, and in neural tissues from experimentally-infected calves. This study demonstrated that there is a strong IFN-λ3 response early after BoHV-1infection of undifferentiated neuroblastoma cells. During acute BoHV-1 and BoHV-5 infection of calves, low levels of IFN-λ3 expression were detected in the brain, which would favor virus spread within this tissue. Striking differences in the transcriptional levels of IFN-λ3 were observed in trigeminal ganglion, particularly in BoHV-1-acutely- and latently-infected calves. During reactivation, IFN-λ3 expression was down-regulated, which may be a requirement for virus replication and spread. Overall, different patterns of IFN-λ3 expression were detected during BoHV-1 and BoHV-5 infection, particularly during latency.

Introduction: Alcohol consumption is a worldwide problem that has been steadily increasing. Chile is among the countries with the highest alcohol consumption per capita in Latin America. Due to the high prevalence and the large number of associated complications, we described the mortality rate due to alcohol dependence syndrome (ADS) between the years 2016-2020 in Chile. Material y methods: Observational, ecological and descriptive study. The population corresponded to all deaths due to ADS as a basic cause in Chile between 2016-2020 using source Department of Health Statistics and Information. The mortality rate was calculated according to sex, age group and region with a total of 710 people. Results: During the period 2016-2020, an increase in the mortality rate was observed mainly in 2020. Regarding sex, the mortality rate was predominantly in men. The age group with the highest mortality rate was 65-79. The highest average mortality rate between 2016 and 2020 is that of the Los Lagos region (2,09) and a standard deviation of (1,05). Discussion: Interestingly, the average alcohol-attributable mortality rate is lower in Chile and the United States than in other countries in the Americas. In Chile as well as in Argentina and Cuba, the mortality rate is higher in men, however in relation to age range, the predominance of rates varies across the region.

RESUMEN

Neospora caninum is a leading cause of abortion in cattle worldwide. The study of the immune response against N. caninum is critical to understand its epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and, ultimately, in preventing and controlling bovine neosporosis. Herein, we determined the gene expression of innate immune components endosomal RNA-sensing TLRs, BMAP28 cathelicidin, TNF-α and IL-10 and characterized the variation in both IgG ratio and avidity at delivery in N. caninum-infected heifers challenged at day 210 of gestation, colostrum and their calves. Increased BMAP28 expression was observed not only in colostrum but also in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) and umbilical cord of calves from N. caninum-infected heifers in comparison with mock-infected control group. In addition, statistically significant decrease of TLR7 and IL-10 expression levels were observed in umbilical cord, suggesting an attempt to avoid an exacerbated immune response against the parasite. At delivery, serum and colostrum samples from infected group evidenced specific IgG anti-N. caninum. Infected heifers showed IgG1/IgG2 ratios <1 and high avidity specific IgG. As expected, colostrum samples of these animals exhibited a high IgG1 concentration and elevated avidity values. Three out of four calves from N. caninum-infected heifers had specific IgG with IgG1/IgG2 ratios>1 and lower avidity values before colostrum intake. Interestingly, both IgG1/IgG2 ratios and avidity values increased in seropositive calves after colostrum intake. Overall, this study provides novel information on neonatal immunity in congenitally infected calves, which is essential to understand how the immune pathways could be manipulated or immune components could be employed in order to improve protection against neosporosis.

RESUMEN

The role of the local innate immune response in the neuropathogenesis of bovine herpesvirus (BoHV) type 1 and 5 remains largely unknown. This study determined the gene transcriptional expression of relevant bovine cathelicidins, TNFα and IFNß in the nervous system of experimentally-infected cattle during the different stages of BoHV-1 and BoHV-5 infectious cycle. We studied the modulation of bovine myeloid antimicrobial peptide (BMAP) 27 and 28 by alpha-herpesviruses during acute infection of the central nervous system (CNS). However, BMAP28 was the main cathelicidin modulated. BoHV-5 supressed BMAP28 expression mainly in frontal cortex and cervical medulla whereas BoHV-1 slightly induced the expression of cathelicidins in the olfactory and posterior cortex. The differences in the regulation of the innate response are likely related to distinct replication rates of both alpha-herpesviruses in the CNS. During latency and reactivation, BoHV-1 and -5 decreased BMAP28 and BMAP27 expression, accompanied by high levels of TNFα and IFNß transcripts in the posterior brain region and medulla during BoHV reactivation. In terms of cytokines, a remarkably overexpression of IFNß was induced by BoHV-5 (133.8-fold). In trigeminal ganglion (TG) both alpha-herpesviruses induced cathelidicins gene expression at all stages of the infection cycle, while only acute BoHV-5 infection increased TNFα (129-fold) mRNA levels. This study suggests that the pronounced downregulation of BMAP28 in BoHV-5-acutely-infected CNS is due to a decreased immune stimulation during viral infection, favouring its establishment in the CNS with a low replication rate until latency. Thus, cathelicidins, together with IFNß and TNFα, are differentially regulated by BoHV-5 and BoHV-1 infections and this regulation is dependent on the stage of virus infection in the bovine nervous system.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to analyzing the impact of germination time on the morphology, crystallinity, gelatinization and viscosity properties on the starch of Esmeralda and Perla barley variety. The two barley were germinated for 1 to 8 days, at 26 °C and 65% relative humidity. Micrographs showed the presence of pinholes and eroded surfaces. Starch in Esmeralda was hydrolyzed completely at 8 days of germination. Birefringence was reduced from day 4, losing molecular structuring of the crystalline area. Morphometric data: fractal dimension, area, perimeter, circularity, and roundness decreased significantly along germination time in both varieties. The entropy increased significantly, from 0.79 to 10.09 in Esmeralda and from 0.46 to 7.57 in Perla. Relative crystallinity decreased significantly in the Perla from 24.7% to 23.6%. Viscosity peaks were also significantly reduced, pasting temperature was constant in Esmeralda but in Perla was significantly reduced from 95.43 to 95.19 °C with germination, the gelatinization temperature increased significantly in the Esmeralda while in Perla it remained constant. Enthalpy decreased significantly to 75.8% and 37% in Esmeralda and Perla respectively. The study of germination impact on structural and physicochemical properties is important to identify the use of hydrolyzed starches in the food industry or others.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The main study objectives were to describe the practice of mechanical ventilation over an 18-year period in Mexico, and estimate changes in mortality among critical patients subjected to invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV). DESIGN: A retrospective subanalysis of a prospective observational study conducted in 1998, 2004, 2010 and 2016 was carried out. SETTING: Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in Mexico. PARTICIPANTS: Adult patients consecutively enrolled in the ICU during one month and who underwent IMV for more than 12hours or noninvasive mechanical ventilation for more than one hour. Follow-up was performed up to a maximum of 28 days after inclusion. INTERVENTIONS: None. PRINCIPAL VARIABLES OF INTEREST: Age, sex, severity upon admission as estimated by SAPS II, parameters of daily arterial blood gases, treatment and complication variables, date and status at discharge from the ICU and from hospital. RESULTS: A total of 959 patients were included in 81 ICUs. Tidal volume (vt) decreased significantly both in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) criteria (estimated 8.5ml/kg b.w. in 1998 to 6ml/kg in 2016; P<0.001) and in patients without ARDS (estimated 9ml/kg b.w. in 1998 to 6ml/kg in 2016; P<0.001). The ventilatory protective strategy (defined as vt < 6ml/kg or < 8ml/kg and a plateau pressure < 30cmH2O) was: 19% in 1998, 44% in 2004, 58% in 2010 and 75% in 2016 (P<0.001). The adjusted mortality rate in ICU over the 4 periods was: in 2004, odds ratio (OR) 1.05 (95% confidence interval, 95%CI: 0.73-1.72; P=0.764); in 2010, OR 1.68 (95%CI: 1.13-2.48; P=0.009); in 2016, OR 0.85 (95%CI: 0.60-1.20; P=0.368). CONCLUSIONS: The clinical practice of IMV in Mexican ICUs has been modified over a period of 18 years. The most significant change is the ventilatory strategy based on low vt. These changes have not been associated with significant changes in mortality.

RESUMEN

Production of antimicrobial peptides cathelicidins, interferons and cytokines is an important feature in airway epithelial host defense. The innate immune response to alpha-herpesvirus infection at the sites of primary replication has not been fully studied. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the expression of innate immune components, cathelicidins, IFNß, TNFα and TNF receptors (TNFRI and TNFRII) during acute infection and reactivation of bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BoHV-1) and 5 (BoHV-5) in the respiratory tract and lymphoid tissue of their natural host. We found that BoHV infection modulates mainly the expression of BMAP28, a key cathelicidin in cattle. It was downregulated by both viruses in retropharyngeal lymph nodes of acutely infected-calves, and it was accompanied by a lower expression of IFNß, TNFα and TNFRI. BoHV-5 showed a pronounced role in the downregulation of BMAP28, even in nasal mucosa and lung. However, during reactivation, BoHV-5 upregulated both BMAP28 and IFNß in retropharyngeal lymph nodes. Acute replication induced also TNFα mRNA and protein synthesis, and expression of TNFRI and II was positively regulated during both acute infection and reactivation, particularly in the trachea. Moreover, BMAP27 was detected during BoHV-1 reactivation suggesting a potential role at this stage. Thus, cathelicidins are implicated in alpha-herpesvirus infections of the bovine respiratory system and the response is distinct during BoHV-1 and BoHV-5 acute infection and reactivation. This demonstrates that these viruses modulate differentially the components of innate immune response, possibly influencing their pathogenesis. This study provides an initial pilot analysis of factors that might be implicated in alpha-herpesvirus infection of the bovine respiratory system.

RESUMEN

A summary is presented in this article of the principal concepts of the Argentine Consensus on Arterial Hypertension, which has been carried out for the first time jointly by the three main scientific societies associated with the diagnosis and treatment of arterial hypertension in Argentina (Argentine Society of Arterial Hypertension, Argentine Society of Cardiology and Argentine Federation of Cardiology). Among its main points, is emphasised the need to improve the diagnosis and control of high blood pressure, the use of ambulatory blood pressure measurement techniques, the importance of the risk stratification of the hypertensive patient, and the early use of pharmacological combinations in the treatment as a means to quickly achieve control. Finally, it lists the main recommendations for the management of hypertension in special populations, such as pregnant women, elderly people, diabetics, resistant patients, as well as patients with chronic kidney disease.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To assess the impact of bloodstream infection (BSI) in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC) in the cetuximab era. METHODS: We prospectively analysed the epidemiology, microbiology and outcomes of 51 BSI episodes occurring in 48 patients with HNC (2006-2017). We performed a retrospective matched-cohort study (1:2) to determine the risk factors for BSI. Finally, we compared patients who died with those who survived to identify risk factors for mortality. RESULTS: The most frequent HNC localization was the oropharynx (43%), and pneumonia was the most frequent source (25%). Gram-positive BSI occurred in 55% cases, mainly due to Streptococcus pneumoniae (21%), and among Gram-negatives, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae were the most frequent. Hypoalbuminemia (OR 8.4; 95% CI, 3.5-19.9), previous chemotherapy (OR, 3.2; 95% CI, 1.3-7.4) and cetuximab therapy (OR, 2.8; 95% CI, 1.6-6.7) were significant risk factors for BSI. Patients with BSI had a higher overall case-fatality rate than patients without BSI (OR, 4.4; 95% CI, 1.7-11.8). Hypoalbuminemia was an independent risk factor for the early (7 day) and overall (30 day) case-fatalities, with ORs of 0.8 (95% CI, 0.6-0.9) and 0.8 (95% CI, 0.7-0.97), respectively. The presence of comorbidities (OR, 7; 95% CI, 1.4-34) was also an independent risk factor for overall case-fatality. CONCLUSIONS: BSI causes high mortality in patients with HNC and is most often secondary to pneumonia. It occurs mainly among patients with hypoalbuminemia who receive treatment with cetuximab or chemotherapy. The development of BSI in patients with HNC impairs their outcome, especially in the presence of hypoalbuminemia and comorbidities.

The cardiorenal syndrome has been defined as a situation in which therapy to relieve congestive symptoms of heart failure is limited by a decreased renal function. The resistance to conventional diuretic treatment makes difficult managing these patients. Tolvaptan, a selective vasopressin-2 receptor antagonist, has been used successfully in adults with this pathology but the experience with children is very limited. A five-year-old girl with renal failure waiting for a heart transplant is presented. Tolvaptan (0.1 mg/kg/day) was started at very low dosage, resulting in an excellent response. We analyzed the creatinine, urea, urine volume and sodium evolution. Renal function also improved. She could be discharged after four days of treatment (156 days of hospitalization) with ambulatory favourable follow-up until heart transplant. Tolvaptan should be considered in pediatric cases of conventional diuretic-resistant congestive heart failure, especially when complicated by kidney disease.

RESUMEN

Abstract Parkinson's disease is the second cause of progressive chronic neurodegenerative disease, it has a high prevalence and incidence, generates a high impact on the quality of life of patients and significant costs due to its healthcare. Parkinson's disease is developed due to the degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substance nigra pars compacta, which is manifested in the appearance of motor symptoms such as bradykinesia, rest tremor, rigidity and postural instability; as well as non-motor symptoms such as gastrointestinal, sleep, autonomic, cognitive alterations, among others, reflecting the impairment of different non-dopaminergic pathways. The diagnosis is based on its most frequent clinical manifestations and the exclusion of other causes of parkinsonism. The pharmacological treatment seeks to control motor and non-motor symptoms, which are worsened by the natural history of the disease or are accompanied by side effects induced by pharmacotherapy, making necessary other approaches such as deep brain stimulation.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the expression of Podoplanin (PDPN) in epithelium and lymphatic vessels in normal oral mucosa (NOM), oral epithelial displasia (OED) and oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). A descriptive case study was carried out. Nineteen histological samples diagnosed with NOM, 18 diagnosed with OED and 19 with OSCC. Immunopositive cells for PDPN were those that presented membrane and/or cytoplasmic staining. A semi-quantitative analysis of the stained sections was made according to the immunoreactive score (IRS) for the extension and intensity of epithelial cells, while the evaluation of lymphangiogenesis was made through the calculation of the mean vascular density (MVD). The results indicated the higher IRS value was in OSCC followed by OED and lowest in NOM, with significant differences between OSCC/OED (p= 0.0200) and OSCC/NOM (p= 0.0078). No differences in MVD were found between the studied samples (p= 0.4273). Finally, the correlation between the value of epithelial IRS and MVD was analyzed through Spearman Independence test, which determined there was no statistically significant relationship between the studied variables (p= 0.2056). In conclusion, epithelial IRS value is greater in OSCC samples than OED and NOM. There was no statistically significant difference in lymphatic MVD in the studied samples. There is no correlation between the epithelial PDPN expression and lymphatic MVD in OSCC and OED samples.

RESUMEN

AIMS To describe milk yield and culling risk in cows diagnosed with left displacement of abomasum (LDA) treated either conservatively, by right flank pyloric omentopexy, or rolling and toggling, compared with normal herdmates from four Chilean dairy herds. METHODS Historical records were obtained from four commercial dairy farms located in Central Chile for cows with a history of LDA between 2010 and 2012, and healthy herdmates. Cows with LDA were categorised into three groups: cows treated with right omentopexy (ST, n=58), cows treated by toggle suturing (TT, n=15) and cows treated conservatively (CT, n=56). Control cows (n=129) were selected from unaffected cows, matched by days in milk (DIM), parity and herd with affected cows. Groups were compared for risk of culling up to 300 DIM and for milk production up to 5 months of lactation using survival and Cox proportional hazard models and mixed models for repeated measures, respectively. RESULTS Compared with cows in the Control group, the risk of being culled up to 300 DIM was 9.1 (SE 0.62) times greater in ST cows, 10.4 (SE 0.68) times greater in TT cows, and 37.3 (SE 0.61) times greater in CT cows (p<0.01). In the first 5 months of lactation, compared with cows in the Control group, mean daily milk production was 23.3 (SE 1.5) kg less in ST cows, 15.3 (SE 1.6) kg less in TT cows, and 30.1 (SE 1.3) kg less in CT cows (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE Cows in four dairy herds in central Chile diagnosed and treated for LDA produced significantly less milk and had a higher risk of culling than healthy herdmates. Although cows treated surgically or with toggle suture never recovered to the extent of healthy cows, they produced more milk than cows treated conservatively. However, the retrospective nature of the data, the inclusion of only four herds and the non-random allocation to treatments means that these conclusions cannot be extrapolated to the overall dairy cattle population in Chile.

RESUMEN

DNA barcoding is a technique used primarily for the documentation and identification of biological diversity based on mitochondrial DNA sequences. Butterflies have received particular attention in DNA barcoding studies, although varied performance may be obtained due to different scales of geographic sampling and speciation processes in various groups. The montane Andean Satyrinae constitutes a challenging study group for taxonomy. The group displays high richness, with more of 550 species, and remarkable morphological similarity among taxa, which renders their identification difficult. In the present study, we evaluated the effectiveness of DNA barcodes in the identification of montane Andean satyrines and the effect of increased geographical scale of sampling on identification performance. Mitochondrial sequences were obtained from 104 specimens of 39 species and 16 genera, collected in a forest remnant in the northwest Andes. DNA barcoding has proved to be a useful tool for the identification of the specimens, with a well-defined gap and producing clusters with unambiguous identifications for all the morphospecies in the study area. The expansion of the geographical scale with published data increased genetic distances within species and reduced those among species, but did not generally reduce the success of specimen identification. Only in Forsterinaria rustica (Butler, 1868), a taxon with high intraspecific variation, the barcode gap was lost and low support for monophyly was obtained. Likewise, expanded sampling resulted in a substantial increase in the intraspecific distance in Morpho sulkowskyi (Kollar, 1850); Panyapedaliodes drymaea (Hewitson, 1858); Lymanopoda obsoleta (Westwood, 1851); and Lymanopoda labda Hewitson, 1861; but for these species, the barcode gap was maintained. These divergent lineages are nonetheless worth a detailed study of external and genitalic morphology variation, as well as ecological features, in order to determine the potential existence of cryptic species. Even including these cases, DNA barcoding performance in specimen identification was 100% successful based on monophyly, an unexpected result in such a taxonomically complicated group.
