We have carried out an experimental investigation of the spin-wave dynamics in the Au/CoFeB/Au multilayer consisting of a ferromagnetic film with thicknesses of 0.8, 0.9 and 1.0 nm. We employed the Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy to measure the frequency of the spin waves in dependence on the wave vector. Additionally, we characterized the samples by ferromagnetic resonance measurements. We found that the considered samples exhibit perpendicular magnetic anisotropy with low damping, indicating small pumping effects. Furthermore, we found a nonreciprocal dispersion relation pointing at a non-negligible Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. These results make the Au/CoFeB/Au multilayer a compelling subject for further analysis and as a potential material for future applications within magnonics.

The surface acoustic waves, i.e., surface phonons may have huge potential for future spintronic devices, if coupled to other waves (e.g., spin waves) or quasiparticles. In order to understand the coupling of acoustic phonons with the spin degree of freedom, especially in magnetic thin film-based heterostructures, one needs to investigate the properties of phonons in those heterostructures. This also allows us to determine the elastic properties of individual magnetic layers and the effective elastic parameters of the whole stacks. Here, we study frequency versus wavevector dispersion of thermally excited SAWs in CoFeB/MgO heterostructures with varying CoFeB thickness by employing Brillouin light spectroscopy. The experimental results are corroborated by finite element method-based simulations. From the best agreement of simulation results with the experiments, we find out the elastic tensor parameters for CoFeB layer. Additionally, we estimate the effective elastic parameters (elastic tensors, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio) of the whole stacks for varying CoFeB thickness. Interestingly, the simulation results, either considering elastic parameters of individual layers or considering effective elastic parameters of whole stacks, show good agreement with the experimental results. These extracted elastic parameters will be very useful to understand the interaction of phonons with other quasiparticles.

The dynamics and dispersion of surface phonons in heterostructure semiconductor/ topological insulator Si/Bi2Te3 was investigated using high resolution Brillouin light scattering method in the GHz frequency range. Both Rayleigh and Sezawa surface acoustic waves have been observed for wave vectors ranging from 0.006 to 0.023 nm-1. Anomaly in dispersion relations ω(q) for both surface waves were detected for the wave vector q = 0.016 nm-1. The finite element method (FEM) was used to simulate the observed shapes of ω(q) and to find the deformation profiles of surface acoustic waves. We attribute the observed changes to the coupling between low energy electrons and surface phonons. The coupling between helical Dirac states and surface phonons is discussed in the frame of accessible theoretical models.

The modification of phononic crystals by surface structuring allows obtaining a new parameter describing the dynamics of the structure produced in this way. We have investigated the dispersion relation of surface acoustic waves propagating in a phononic material which is based on nanometer-scale surface modulation using interconnected one-dimensional array of stripes and a two-dimensional array of pillars. The influence of these two array components on the dispersion relation has been determined experimentally (Brillouin light scattering) and theoretically (Finite Element Method). The interaction of these two nanostructures supports a new mode which is not observed in independent structures of pillars and stripes. The influence of the relative position of these two nanostructures on the frequency of the new mode has been determined.

The present study was carried out to investigate the protective effects of roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge on hypobaric hypoxia. Two extracts of S. miltiorrhiza (extract 1: ethanol : water - 50 : 50; extract 2: 96% ethanol) were used. The experiments were performed after 7 consecutive days of administration of the extracts (200 mg/kg b.w., intragastrically) to male Wistar rats. Next, after placing animals for 60 min in the controlled acute hypobaric hypoxia (500 mm Hg) the systolic arterial blood pressure (SAP) in conscious rats, bioelectric heart activity in unconscious rats and analysis of oxidative stress parameters in the blood of rats: malonyldialdehyde (MDA) and lipid peroxidase (LPO) concentration, activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) or glutathione peroxidase (GPX) were assayed. It was found out that the extract 1 augmented the lowering of SAP shown in hypoxia affected control rats. On the contrary the extract 2 reversed SAP to values obtained in control animals. Moreover, both extracts led to the normalization of hypoxia-induced tachycardia and levels of MDA, LPO and SOD. It seems that the above-mentioned effects are coupled with different active compounds content in the extracts, however more studies are needed to confirm this hypothesis.

Echinacea purpurea (EP) and Echinacea angustifolia (EA) are ones of the most important world's herbs with immunotropic activity. They were traditional medicinal plants used by North American Indians for the treatment of various illnesses. Now they are cultivated in many countries and are used mainly to treat respiratory tract infections. Rhodiola rosea (RR) and Rhodiola quadrifida (RQ) are medicinal plants originated from Asia and used traditionally as adaptogens, antidepressants, and anti-inflammatory remedies. We previously reported, that extracts of underground parts of RR and RQ exhibited immunotropic activity. We have demonstrated in pigs that in vitro RR or RQ supplementation of blood lymphocyte cultures stimulated T cell proliferative response to Con A in lower, and inhibited it in higher Rhodiola extract concentrations. The aim of this work was to evaluate the in vivo effect of these herbal remedies on the in vitro proliferative response of mouse splenic lymphocytes to another T-cell mitogen- Phaseolus vulgaris haemagglutinin (PHA). We have found significant stimulation of proliferative response, in comparison to the controls, in mice fed lower doses of tested remedies, and inhibition, no effect or lower stimulation, in mice fed higher doses of these drugs.
