RESUMEN

The substantial release of NH3 during composting leads to nitrogen (N) losses and poses environmental hazards. Additives can mitigate nitrogen loss by adsorbing NH3/NH4, adjusting pH, and enhancing nitrification, thereby improving compost quality. Herein, we assessed the effects of combining bacterial inoculants (BI) (1.5%) with tricalcium phosphate (CA) (2.5%) on N retention, organic N conversion, bacterial biomass, functional genes, network patterns, and enzyme activity during kitchen waste (KW) composting. Results revealed that adding of 1.5%/2.5% (BI + CA) significantly (p < 0.05) improved ecological parameters, including pH (7.82), electrical conductivity (3.49 mS/cm), and N retention during composting. The bacterial network properties of CA (265 node) and BI + CA (341 node) exhibited a substantial niche overlap compared to CK (210 node). Additionally, treatments increased organic N and total N (TN) content while reducing NH4+-N by 65.42% (CA) and 77.56% (BI + CA) compared to the control (33%). The treatments, particularly BI + CA, significantly (p < 0.05) increased amino acid N, hydrolyzable unknown N (HUN), and amide N, while amino sugar N decreased due to bacterial consumption. Network analysis revealed that the combination expanded the core bacterial nodes and edges involved in organic N transformation. Key genes facilitating nitrogen mediation included nitrate reductase (nasC and nirA), nitrogenase (nifK and nifD), and hydroxylamine oxidase (hao). The structural equation model suggested that combined application (CA) and microbial inoculants enhance enzyme activity and bacterial interactions during composting, thereby improving nitrogen conversion and increasing the nutrient content of compost products.

RESUMEN

The present study aimed to investigate the physiochemical activities of Senna occidentalis (Linn) roots and phytochemicals as insecticidal (ethyl acetate and methanol) and antidiabetic (ethanolic extract) activities. Physicochemical properties were carried out by using Association of Official Analytical Chemist methods; thin layer chromatography was carried out according to the Stahl method. Larvicidal activity and LD50 were studied against the third instar of Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito larvae to detect and extract toxicity. The ethanolic extracts of the roots were orally tested at the dose 200 mg/kg for the hypoglycemic effect on induced hyperglycemia in normal rats, assessed in the ethanol extract, and were compared with diabetic control and standards glibenclamide 10 mg/kg. Physiochemical parameters showed high rate in the nitrogen-free extract (69.6%), curd fiber (14.5%), crude proteins (8.15%), ether extract (3.75%), and both ash and moisture (2%), and high concentrations values were found in potassium (43 mg/l) followed by phosphorous (28.5 mg/l), calcium (15 mg/l), sodium (3.65 mg/l), and magnesium (0.145 mg/l). In this part, phytochemical compounds showed high amount of alkaloids, triterpene, flavonoids, tannins, sugars, and few amount of anthraquinone glycosides. Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) studies different colored phytochemical constituted with different Rf values. All the spots are colored under UV light, but some are localized colorless after spaying. The ethyl acetate (EtAc) extract showed eight spots, and the methanol (MeOH) extract showed thirteen spots. The larvicidal activity showed that the ethyl acetate extract was safe against mosquito larvae with an LD50 value 1412.54 (p < 0.05), and the methanol extract had moderate larvicidal activity against mosquito larvae with an LD50 value 257.54 (p < 0.05), while the ethanolic extract of Senna occidentalis (L.) causes a favorable hypoglycemic activity when compared to control significant reduction by [53.15%, 32.87%, and 20.94%], respectively, as well as standard glibenclamide. Based on the various data of the physicochemical parameters, TLC spots, and phytochemical compounds of Senna occidentalis root, they could be used as references standards for manufacturing units of Senna occidentalis root larvicidal and antidiabetic drugs.

RESUMEN

In this report, we describe a case of a 61-year-old male patient who had the bacterium Dolosigranulum pigrum growing in a blood culture. It was susceptible to ampicillin, ceftriaxone, levofloxacin, and vancomycin but was intermediately resistant to erythromycin. The patient did not have a negative outcome as a consequence of this bacterium, which retrospectively could have been predicted based on the epidemiological data within the patient's profile.

AIM: To determine the setup reproducibility in the radiation treatment of Head and Neck (HN) patients using open face head and shoulder masks (OHSM) with customized headrest (CHR) versus standard closed head and shoulder masks (CHSM) and to determine the patient's level of comfort and satisfaction for both masks. METHODS: Forty patients were prospectively randomized into two groups using simple random sampling. Group 1 was assigned with CHSMs, immobilized with a standard HR (SHR) while Group 2 was assigned with OHSMs, and immobilized with CHR. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) was taken the first 3 days, followed by weekly CBCT (prior treatment) with results registered to the planning CT to determine translational and rotational inter-fraction shifts and to verify accuracy. Mean (M) and standard deviation (SD) of the systematic and random setup errors of the 2 arms in the translational and rotational directions were analyzed, using Independent t-test and Mann-Whitney U test. Patient comfort was measured using a Likert questionnaire. RESULTS: The vertical, lateral, longitudinal and Z/roll rotational shifts were not significantly different between the two masks. X/yaw and Y/pitch rotational shifts were significantly greater in Group 2 versus Group 1, for both systematic (p = 0.009 and 0.046, respectively) and random settings (p = 0.016 and 0.020) but still within three degrees. Patients reported higher neck and shoulder comfort (p = 0.020) and overall satisfaction (p = 0.026) using the OHSM with the CHR versus the CHSM with the SHR during CT simulation. CONCLUSION: Open masks provide comparable yet comfortable immobilization to closed masks for HN radiotherapy.
