RESUMEN

The ability to drive a spin system to state far from the equilibrium is indispensable for investigating spin structures of antiferromagnets and their functional nonlinearities for spintronics. While optical methods have been considered for spin excitation, terahertz (THz) pulses appear to be a more convenient means of direct spin excitation without requiring coupling between spins and orbitals or phonons. However, room-temperature responses are usually limited to small deviations from the equilibrium state because of the relatively weak THz magnetic fields in common approaches. Here, we studied the magnetization dynamics in a HoFeO3 crystal at room temperature. A custom-made spiral-shaped microstructure was used to locally generate a strong multicycle THz magnetic near field perpendicular to the crystal surface; the maximum magnetic field amplitude of about 2 T was achieved. The observed time-resolved change in the Faraday ellipticity clearly showed second- and third-order harmonics of the magnetization oscillation and an asymmetric oscillation behaviour. Not only the ferromagnetic vector M but also the antiferromagnetic vector L plays an important role in the nonlinear dynamics of spin systems far from equilibrium.

RESUMEN

Infrared quantum absorption spectroscopy is one of the quantum sensing techniques, by which the infrared optical properties of a sample can be estimated through visible or near infrared photon detection without need for infrared optical source or detector, which has been an obstacle for higher sensitivity and spectrometer miniaturization. However, experimental demonstrations have been limited to wavelengths shorter than 5 µm or in the terahertz region, and have not been realized in the so-called fingerprint region of 1500-500 cm-1 (6.6 to 20 µm), which is commonly used to identify chemical compounds or molecules. Here we report the experimental demonstration of quantum Fourier-transform infrared (QFTIR) spectroscopy in the fingerprint region, by which both absorption and phase spectra (complex spectra) can be obtained from Fourier transformed quantum interferograms obtained with a single pixel visible-light detector. As demonstrations, we obtained the transmittance spectrum of a silicon wafer at around 10 µm (1000 cm-1) and complex transmittance spectrum of a synthetic fluoropolymer sheet, polytetrafluoroethylene, in the wavelength range of 8 to 10.5 µm (1250 to 950 cm-1), where absorption due to stretching modes of C-F bonds is clearly observed. These results open the way for new forms of spectroscopic devices based on quantum technologies.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) with high-grade atrioventricular block (HAVB) still has a poor mortality risk, even in the current percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) era. However, early PCI for ACS with HAVB is associated with improved in-hospital survival and a 6-month survival similar to that of ACS without HAVB. CASE PRESENTATION: A 70-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for ACS with HAVB. ECG showed complete AV block, complete right bundle branch block (CRBBB), and left axis deviation. Cardiac enzymes were elevated. He underwent temporary pacemaker insertion and coronary angiography, which showed severe stenosis of the proximal right coronary artery (RCA), 99% stenosis of the distal RCA with Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) grade 2 flow, and total occlusion of the proximal left anterior descending artery (LAD). We performed primary PCI in both the RCA and LAD, which resulted in TIMI grade 3 flow in both. After PCI, the HAVB recovered to normal sinus rhythm with CRBBB; a normal QRS interval returned within three days. The patient was discharged from the hospital without complications. CONCLUSION: In this case of ACS with HAVB, early intensive coronary artery reperfusion resulted in long-term patient survival. The blood supply to the AV node and bilateral bundle branches is complex. Multivessel ischemia may compromise both primary and collateral blood flows to the AV node and septum, resulting in severe conduction impairment. Clinicians performing PCI should be aware of this anatomy and physiology.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: A new complication, longitudinal stent deformation (LSD), is increasingly reported with recent intracoronary stent designs. There have been experiences of unusual cases of distal LSD caused by entrapment of a Lacrosse® non-slip element (NSE) balloon (Goodman Co., Ltd., Nagoya, Japan), which has three flexible nylon elements to prevent slippage. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to report the clinical experience of distal LSD caused by the NSE in the documented center and to investigate the incidence and mechanisms involved. METHODS: Coronary intervention cases were retrospectively reviewed using the NSE balloon in hospital between May 2014 and June 2017. In bench testing, distal LSD was reproduced in a silicon tube model to identify its mechanism. RESULTS: A total of 95 patients with 107 lesions underwent coronary interventions with NSE. Of these, 72 lesions (12 de-novo lesions and 60 in-stent restenosis) were treated using in-stent dilatation. Two distal LSD cases occurred, representing an incidence of 2.78% (2/72) among all procedures; 16.7% (2/12) of the de-novo lesions developed LSD. In vitro experimentation allowed indentification of the mechanisms involved and bailout strategies. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first study to evaluate NSE balloon catheter entrapment complicated by distal LSD in which reconstruction of the deformed stent and retrieval of the NSE could be achieved successfully. There is a potential hazard for distal LSD during post-dilatation using the NSE balloon due to its structural characteristics. Careful assessment is needed to prevent this complication.

RESUMEN

Carbonylation reactions, such as Heck, Sonogashira, and radical carbonylations, were successfully carried out in a "two-chamber reactor" where carbon monoxide was produced ex situ by the Morgan reaction (dehydration of formic acid by sulfuric acid). By a subsequent application in a microflow system using a "tube-in-tube" reactor where gas-permeable Teflon AF2400 was used as the inner tube, it is demonstrated that formic acid/sulfuric acid can be employed concomitantly with an amine base such as triethylamine in the Heck aminocarbonylation of aryl iodide.

RESUMEN

AIMS: To examine the role of trypsin in the immune response of macrophages and to determine whether protease-activated receptors (PARs) are involved in the effects of trypsin. MAIN METHODS: We used RAW264.7 cells and peritoneal macrophages isolated from C57BL/6 wild-type mice, PAR2 knockout mice, and ddY mice. Macrophages were stimulated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in the presence or absence of trypsin, thrombin, and PAR subtype-specific agonists (PARs-AP). Activation of macrophages was quantified by nitric oxide production and expression of inflammatory mediators, such as inducible nitric oxide synthase, interleukin-1ß, and interleukin-6. To clarify the effect of trypsin on LPS receptors, we also investigated the expression of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), soluble MD-2 (sMD-2), membrane-bound MD-2 (mMD-2), soluble CD14 (sCD14), and membrane-bound CD14 (mCD14). To directly investigate the effect of trypsin on CD14 protein, we expressed recombinant CD14 protein. KEY FINDINGS: Trypsin inhibited LPS-induced nitric oxide production and expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase, interleukin-1ß, and interleukin-6. The same inhibitory effects of trypsin were observed in wild-type macrophages and in PAR2 knockout macrophages. Furthermore, the other PAR agonists, thrombin, PAR1-AP, PAR2-AP, and PAR4-AP, did not mimic the effect of trypsin. Although trypsin did not affect TLR4 or mMD-2 expression, sCD14, mCD14, and sMD-2 expressions were decreased by trypsin. Furthermore, trypsin also degraded recombinant CD14 protein. SIGNIFICANCE: Trypsin inhibited LPS signaling PAR-independently via degradation of TLR4 accessory molecules. This observation provides a better understanding of the complicated immune response in acute pancreatitis.

RESUMEN

The Koch-Haaf reaction of adamantanols was successfully carried out in a microflow system at room temperature. By combining an acid-tolerant hastelloy-made micromixer, a PTFE tube, and a hastelloy-made microextraction unit, a packaged reaction-to-workup system was developed. By means of the present system, the multigram scale synthesis of 1-adamantanecarboxylic acid was achieved in ca. one hour operation.
