RESUMEN

Phase changes in oxide materials such as VO2 offer a foundational platform for designing novel solid-state devices. Tuning the V : O stoichiometry offers a vast electronic phase space with non-trivial collective properties. Here, we report the observation of discrete threshold switching voltages (Vth) with constant ΔVth between cycles in vanadium oxide crystals. The observed threshold fields over 10 000 cycles are ∼100× lower than that noted for stoichiometric VO2 and show unique discrete behaviour with constant ΔVth. We correlate the observed discrete memristor behaviour with the valence change mechanism and fluctuations in the chemical composition of spatially distributed VO2-VnO2n-1 complex oxide phases that can synergistically co-operate with the insulator-metal transition resulting in sharp current jumps. The design of chemical heterogeneity in oxide crystals, therefore, offers an intriguing path to realizing low-energy neuromorphic devices.

Zika virus (ZIKV) remains a public health concern, with epidemics in endemic regions and sporadic outbreaks in new areas posing significant threats. Several mosquito-borne flaviviruses that can cause human illness, including West Nile, Usutu, and St. Louis encephalitis, have associations with birds. However, the susceptibility of chickens to ZIKV and their role in viral epidemiology is not currently known. We investigated the susceptibility of chickens to experimental ZIKV infection using chickens ranging from 1-day-old chicks to 6-week-old birds. ZIKV caused no clinical signs in chickens of all age groups tested. Viral RNA was detected in the blood and tissues during the first 5 days post-inoculation in 1-day and 4-day-old chicks inoculated with a high viral dose, but ZIKV was undetectable in 6-week-old birds at all timepoints. Minimal antibody responses were observed in 6-week-old birds, and while present in younger chicks, they waned by 28 days post-infection. Innate immune responses varied significantly between age groups. Robust type I interferon and inflammasome responses were measured in older chickens, while limited innate immune activation was observed in younger chicks. Signal transducer and activator of transcription 2 (STAT2) is a major driver of host restriction to ZIKV, and chicken STAT2 is distinct from human STAT2, potentially contributing to the observed resistance to ZIKV infection. The rapid clearance of the virus in older chickens coincided with an effective innate immune response, highlighting age-dependent susceptibility. Our study indicates that chickens are not susceptible to productive ZIKV infection and are unlikely to play a role in the ZIKV epidemiology.

Carbendazim is a widely used fungicide to protect agricultural and horticultural crops against a wide array of fungal species. Published reports have shown that the wide usage of carbendazim resulted in reprotoxicity, carcinogenicity, immunotoxicity, and developmental toxicity in mammalian models. However, studies related to the developmental toxicity of carbendazim in aquatic organisms are not clear. To address this gap, an attempt was made by exposing zebrafish embryos to carbendazim (800 µg/L) and assessing the phenotypic and transcriptomic profile at different developmental stages [24 hour post fertilization (hpf), 48 hpf, 72 hpf and 96 hpf). At 48 hpf, phenotypic abnormalities such as delay in hatching rate, deformed spinal axial curvature, and pericardial edema were observed in zebrafish larvae over its respective controls. At 72 hpf, exposure of zebrafish embryos exposed to carbendazim resulted in scoliosis; however, unexposed larvae did not exhibit signs of scoliosis. Interestingly, the transcriptomic analysis revealed a total of 1253 DEGs were observed at selected time points, while unique genes at 24 hpf, 48 hpf, 72 hpf and 96 hpf was found to be 76.54 %, 61.14 %, 92.98 %, and 68.28 %, respectively. Functional profiling of downregulated genes revealed altered transcriptomic markers associated with phototransduction (24 hpf and 72 hpf), immune system (48 hpf), and SNARE interactions in the vesicular pathway (96 hpf). Whereas functional profiling of upregulated genes revealed altered transcriptomic markers associated with riboflavin metabolism (24 hpf), basal transcription factors (48 hpf), insulin signaling pathway (72 hpf), and primary bile acid biosynthesis (96 hpf). Taken together, carbendazim-induced developmental toxicity could be ascribed to pleiotropic responses at the molecular level, which in turn might reflect phenotypic abnormalities.

RESUMEN

We report for the first time MoS2/CNT hybrid nanostructures for memristor applications on flexible and bio-degradable cellulose paper. In our approach, we varied two different weight percentages (10% and 20%) of CNT's in MoS2to improve the MoS2conductivity and investigate the memristor device characteristics. The device with 10% CNT shows a lowVSETvoltage of 2.5 V, which is comparatively small for planar devices geometries. The device exhibits a long data retention time and cyclic current-voltage stability of ∼104s and 102cycles, making it a potential candidate in flexible painted electronics. Along with good electrical performance, it also demonstrates a high mechanical stability for 1000 bending cycles. The conduction mechanism in the MoS2-CNT hybrid structure is corroborated by percolation and defect-induced filament formation. Additionally, the device displays synaptic plasticity performance, simulating potentiation and depression processes. Furthermore, such flexible and biodegradable cellulose-based paper electronics may pave the way to address the environmental pollution caused by electronic waste in the near future.

OBJECTIVES: Literature states a higher self-contamination rate among healthcare workers (HCWs) while doffing personal protective equipment (PPE). During the Covid-19 pandemic, onsite trained observers were not always available to monitor PPE compliance. The remote audio-visual doffing surveillance (RADS) system has the potential to overcome this limitation. We aimed to compare the efficacy of this real-time RADS system against the onsite buddy system for monitoring the doffing of PPE. METHODS: This prospective, observational study was carried out at our tertiary care centre in northern India. 200 HCWs who cared for Covid-19 patients in the intensive care units/operation theatres were included. Group A included HCWs who performed doffing with the help of an onsite trained observer and group B included HCWs who performed doffing with the RADS system. An independent observer noted the error at any step using the CDC doffing checklist, in both groups. An online questionnaire to analyse the level of satisfaction post-doffing was also surveyed. RESULTS: The proportion of errors committed during doffing was significantly lower in group B compared to group A with a low relative risk of 0.34 (95% CI 0.22-0.51) (p < 0.001) (Figure 1A,B). In both groups, there was no difference in HCWs feedback regarding the ease of the system and fear of committing an error. Though the perceived quality of monitoring was felt better with onsite buddy, the overall confidence rating of being safe after doffing was better with the RADS system. CONCLUSION: Real-time RADS system may be more effective than the onsite buddy system for ensuring the safety of HCWs during doffing PPE. HCWs level of satisfaction related to the ease and anxiety with the monitoring systems were comparable. RADS system can reduce reliance on HCW resources and can integrate well into existing healthcare systems.

The present study was conducted to elucidate (1) the influence of kisspeptin (KP) on the in vitro development of preantral follicles (PFs) and (2) evolution of KP receptor gene (KISS1R) expression during ovarian follicular development in sheep. Kisspeptin was supplemented (0-100 µg/ml) in the culture medium of PFs for 6 days. The cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) from cultured PFs were subsequently matured to metaphase II (MII) for an additional 24 h. The proportions of PFs exhibiting growth, antrum formation, average increase in diameter, and maturation of oocytes to MII stage were the indicators of follicular development in vitro. The expression of the kisspeptin receptor gene at each development stages of in vivo developed (preantral, early antral, antral, large antral and COCs from Graafian follicles) and in vitro cultured PFs supplemented with KP was assessed using a real-time polymerase chain reaction. The best development in all the parameters under study was elicited with 10 µg/ml of KP. Supplementation of KP (10 µg/ml) in a medium containing other growth factors (insulin-like growth factor-I) and hormones (growth hormone, thyroxine, follicle-stimulating hormone) resulted in better PF development. The KISS1R gene was expressed in follicular cells and oocytes at all the development stages of both in vivo developed and in vitro cultured follicles. Higher KISS1R gene expression was supported by culture medium containing KP along with other hormones and growth factors. Accordingly, it is suggested that one of the mechanisms through which KP and other growth factors and hormones influence the ovarian follicular development in mammals is through the upregulation of expression of the KP receptor gene.

Mosquito-borne diseases (MBDs) pose a significant public health concern globally, and India, with its unique eco-sociodemographic characteristics, is particularly vulnerable to these diseases. This comprehensive review aims to provide an in-depth overview of MBDs in India, emphasizing their impact and potential implications for global health. The article explores distribution, epidemiology, control or elimination, and economic burden of the prevalent diseases such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, and lymphatic filariasis, which collectively contribute to millions of cases annually. It sheds light on their profound effects on morbidity, mortality, and socioeconomic burdens and the potential for international transmission through travel and trade. The challenges and perspectives associated with controlling mosquito populations are highlighted, underscoring the importance of effective public health communication for prevention and early detection. The potential for these diseases to spread beyond national borders is recognized, necessitating a holistic approach to address the challenge. A comprehensive literature search was conducted, covering the past five decades (1972-2022), utilizing databases such as Web of Science, PubMed, and Google Scholar, in addition to in-person library consultations. The literature review analyzed 4,082 articles initially identified through various databases. After screening and eligibility assessment, 252 articles were included for analysis. The review focused on malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, and lymphatic filariasis. The included studies focused on MBDs occurrence in India, while those conducted outside India, lacking statistical analysis, or published before 1970 were excluded. This review provides valuable insights into the status of MBDs in India and underscores the need for concerted efforts to combat these diseases on both national and global scales through consilience.

This study investigated the expression patterns of certain ATP synthesis associated genes (GAPDHS, PGK2, ENO4 and MDH2) in fresh and frozen-thawed bubaline spermatozoa vis-à-vis capacitation. Eight adult Murrah buffalo bulls, aged 5-7 years, were randomly selected from a bull farm and fresh semen was collected once a week for four weeks (n = 32) from the selected bulls. Simultaneously, frozen straws of the same bulls were collected (n = 32, four straws were pooled per sample). The samples were divided into four groups i.e., fresh non capacitated (control/group 1), fresh capacitated (group 2), frozen non capacitated (group 3) and frozen capacitated (group 4). In all groups mRNA extraction was done. The mRNA expression of GAPDHS was significantly higher in group 3 compared to the other groups, whereas the expression of ENO4 was significantly up-regulated in group 2 and 3 compared to the group 4. Similarly, the mRNA expression of PGK2 was significantly up-regulated in group 3 whereas in case of MDH2, it was significantly higher in group 2, 3 and 4 compared group 1. It can be concluded from our study that freezing and capacitation has a significant effect on the expression dynamics of the ATP synthesis-associated genes warranting necessary interventions in handling procedures to minimise the adverse effect of freezing on ATP synthesis process to ensure persistence of fertilizing ability of sperm.

The present study was conducted to ascertain whether the role of kisspeptin in promoting in vitro development of preantral follicles was through the regulation of P450 aromatase gene expression and steroidogenesis in sheep. Accordingly, the cumulus cells and oocytes were collected from different development stages of preantral follicles grown in vivo and cultured in vitro in TCM199B (Group I), TCM199B + KP (10 µg/mL) (Group II) and Standard medium + KP (10 µg/mL). To measure the steroid (Estradiol-17ß; E2 and Progesterone; P4 ) synthesis through ELISA, spent culture medium was collected separately from the same in vitro groups. E2 synthesis in the spent medium collected from all the three groups showed an increasing trend from PFs' exposed to respective culture media for 3 min to 2-day culture stage but decreased thereafter till 6-day culture stage. This is followed by a sharp increase in E2 concentration in the spent medium collected after in vitro maturation. However, P4 synthesis in group III followed increased pattern as the development progressed from PFs' exposed to culture medium for 3 min to in vitro maturation stage. The steroid production was observed at all stages of in vitro development in altered supplemented conditions. The steroid synthesis in the spent medium was highest in the 6 day cultured PFs' in Standard medium + KP matured in vitro for 24 h. Therefore, supplementation of kisspeptin along with other growth factors promoted steroid production in cultured preantral follicles far better than in other media.

MoTe2garnered much attention among 2D materials due to stable polymorphs with distinctive structural and electronic properties. Among the polymorphs, 1T'-MoTe2in bulk form is type-II Weyl semimetal while, in monolayer form is a quantum spin Hall insulator. Thus, it is suitable for a wide variety of applications. Nevertheless, 1T'-MoTe2degrades within a few hours when exposed to the atmosphere and causes hindrances in device fabrication. Here the degradation kinetics of CVD-synthesized 1T'-MoTe2was investigated using Raman spectroscopy, XPS, and microscopic characterizations. The degradation rate of as-grown 1T'-MoTe2obtained was 9.2 × 10-3min-1. Further, we prevented the degradation of 1T'-MoTe2by introducing a thin coating of S that encapsulates the flakes. 1T'-MoTe2flakes showed stability for several days when covered using sulphur, indicating 25 times enhanced structural stability.

Background: Evaluation of the ortho-anesthetic geriatric care pathway for patients with proximal femur fracture in a tertiary care referral center was done by reporting the peri-operative morbidity and mortality. Clinical and demographic predictors of mortality were also identified in this cohort. Material and Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted between August 2017 and November 2018. Demographic, anesthetic and surgical characteristics were recorded. Telephonic post-discharge follow-up was done for a period of 2 years. Factors predicting mortality were estimated using multivariate logistic regression. Results: The cohort was characterized by frailty, high ASA physical status, NYHA class and Charlson co-morbidity index. The delay in presentation to hospital and subsequent surgical fixation was 7 (1-8) and 8 (5-13) days, respectively. The 30, 60, 90-day, 1-year and 2-year mortality was 13.6%, 21.8%, 25.45%, 36.5% and 44%, respectively. Intra-operative blood transfusion was a predictor of 30-day mortality (OR 9.2, 95% CI 1.02-83.17; p = 0.048). Pre-operative respiratory dysfunction predicted 60-day (OR 11.245, 95% CI 1.38-91.58; p = 0.024) and 90-day (OR 11.654, 95% CI 1.91-71.1; p = 0.008) mortality. Post-operative morbidity was reported in 31 (28.1%) patients; incidence of pneumonia (n = 9), sepsis (n = 8), MI (n = 6), PTE (n = 5) and ARF (n = 3) were 8.18%, 7.27%, 5.45%, 4.54% and 2.72%, respectively. Conclusion: Existing pathway facilitated surgical fixation with median delay of 8 days which should be shortened to 48 h. High mortality in our cohort needs to be decreased by preventing admission delays and aggressively managing co-morbidities. Acceptable benchmark goals for pre-operative optimization of lung disease and decrease in intra-operative blood transfusion need to be incorporated in existing care pathway.

The detection of water deficit conditions in different soils of Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh, India was assessed in consecutive two seasons of 2017-18 to 2019-20 cropping seasons using combined indicators developed from Standard Precipitation Index (SPI) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Historical rainfall data during the study period of 56 administrative units were analyzed by using R software and derived three-month SPI. The MODIS satellite data from 2007 to 2020 was downloaded out of which the first ten years' data was used as mean monthly NDVI and the remaining period data was used to derive the anomaly index for the specific month. MODIS satellite data was downloaded, using LST and NDVI, and MSI values were calculated. The NDVI anomaly was derived using MODIS data to study the onset and intensity of water deficit conditions. Results indicated that SPI values gradually increased from the start of the Kharif season, reached their maximum during the August and September months, and decreased gradually with high variation among the mandals. The NDVI anomaly values were highest in October and December the for Kharif and Rabi seasons, respectively. The correlation coefficient between NDVI anomaly and SPI reveals that 79% and 61% of the variation were observed in light and heavy textured soils. The SPI values of -0.5 and -0.75; the NDVI anomaly values of -1.0 and -1.5 and SMI values of 0.28 and 0.26 were established as the thresholds for the onset of water deficit conditions in light and heavy textured soils, respectively. Overall, results suggest that the combined use of SMI, SPI, and NDVI anomaly is capable to provide a near-real-time indicator for water deficit conditions in light and heavy texture soils. Yield reduction was higher in light-textured soils ranging from 6.1 to 34.5%. These results can further be used in devising tactics for the effective mitigation of drought.

Background and Aims: Ultrasound-guided subclavian vein cannulation has two approaches: supraclavicular and infraclavicular. The aim of this study was to compare the ease of cannulation by recording the puncture time of the subclavian vein with the two approaches in adult patients. Material and Methods: This study was approved by our institutional ethics committee, and a written informed consent was obtained from the patients. This prospective randomized trial recruited patients aged 18 to 80 years with definite indications of subclavian vein cannulation. Real-time in-plane ultrasound-guided technique was used, and the subclavian vein was punctured at the junction of the brachiocephalic and IJV in supraclavicular approach (SC) and in oblique axis below the border of the clavicle in infraclavicular approach (IC). Results: A total of 96 patients were randomly allocated equally into two groups of 48 each, but only 45 patients in each group could be successfully cannulated. Median puncture times were comparable; 15 (9-39) s in SC and 21 (5-80) s in IC group. The first attempt success rate was 82.2% and 62.2%, and the mean total access time was 99.11 ± 34.66 s and 103.44 ± 50.27 s in SC and IC approaches, respectively and were comparable. The attempts of needle puncture were significantly higher in IC approach (1.40 ± 0.54 vs 1.20 ± 0.46 in SC approach; P = 0.04). The complication rates were comparable and less than 5%. Conclusion: Ease of cannulation of the subclavian vein using ultrasound-guided supraclavicular and infraclavicular approach is comparable as no statistically significant difference is noted in the puncture time and first-attempt success rate. The increased number of needle punctures reported in our study with the IC approach did not translate to an increased complication rate.

The model of a 'reasonable doctor' has been quite successfully used to deliver justice in disputes involving medical negligence. However, many a times a doctor is held guilty of negligence when viewed through the narrow lens of an ideal 'reasonable doctor' and without looking into the circumstances under which he was working which could have actually led to the alleged act of negligence. This short write-up highlights the importance of applying this doctrine more reasonably in the best interest of all stake holders and the drawbacks of the doctrine of 'reasonable doctor' in adjudicating medical negligence cases with few international case laws.

This case represents anaesthetic challenges while managing a neonate having a congenital cardiac anomaly with incidental stridor for the non-operating room anaesthesia (NORA). Anaesthesia management of neonates is demanding even for experienced anaesthetists in terms of vascular access, airway management, relatively poor respiratory reservoir and transitional cardiac physiology. Neonate having cyanotic congenital heart disease with abnormal cardiac physiology demands further attention. In children with congenital heart disease, difficult intubation remains a possibility as they are more often associated with airway anomalies. NORA has its own set of anaesthesia challenges related to a lack of adequate anaesthesia equipment and monitoring devices, a limited and unfamiliar workspace, lack of trained support staff along with more medically complex patients. Recently there has been concern regarding the safety of anaesthetic agents in children < 3 years. So, techniques are being developed to promote immobilisation without using anaesthesia in short procedures. One such technique is the "feed and wrap" technique where feeding and swaddling induce natural sleep in infants. Here, we have used the "feed and wrap technique" in a 24-day-old neonate having supracardiac total anomalous pulmonary venous return with incidental stridor posted for contrast-enhanced computed tomography angiography.

Background: Low-dose dexmedetomidine may be a suitable alternative to opioids for pediatric ambulatory procedures under general anesthesia (GA). However, the recovery profile remains unclear. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the effects of low-dose dexmedetomidine on the recovery profile of children. Methods: Seventy-two children undergoing ambulatory oral rehabilitation under GA were randomly and equally distributed into two groups (D and F). Group D received an infusion of dexmedetomidine 0.25 µg/kg for 4 min for induction, followed by maintenance of 0.4 µg/kg/h. Group F received an infusion of fentanyl 1 µg/kg over 4 min for induction, followed by maintenance at 1 µg/kg/h. The primary outcome was the extubation time. The secondary outcomes were awakening time, end-tidal sevoflurane (ET-Sevo) requirement, change in hemodynamic parameters, Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale (RASS), Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario pain scale (CHEOPS) score, length of PACU stay, and incidence of adverse events. Results: Statistically significant differences were observed in the recovery profile between the groups: the median time for extubation was 3.65 (3.44-6.2) vs. 6.25 (4.21-7) minutes in groups D vs. F (P = 0.001), respectively, while the corresponding awakening times were 19 (18.75-21) and 22.5 (22-24) minutes, respectively (P < 0.001). The mean ET-Sevo was low in group D (1.1 vs. 1.2; P < 0.001). The heart rate was significantly low across all time points in group D, without resulting in bradycardia. The median RASS and CHEOPS scores were also significantly lower in group D. No significant differences were observed in the mean arterial pressure, incidence of adverse events, or length of PACU stay. Conclusion: Low-dose dexmedetomidine was more effective than fentanyl as an opioid substitute at providing a better recovery profile in pediatric ambulatory oral rehabilitation under GA. Dexmedetomidine also significantly reduced sevoflurane consumption without causing adverse events or prolonging hospital stay.
